Narrated by Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Adam and Musa (Moses) argued with each other in the presence of their Lord. Adam defeated Musa in the argument. Musa said: 'O Adam, you are the one whom Allah created with His own hands, breathed His spirit into, and made the angels prostrate to you, and placed you in His paradise, and then you caused mankind to fall into sin and were sent down to the earth?' Adam replied: 'O Musa, you are the one whom Allah chose with His message and spoke to, and gave you the Torah, in which is a clear explanation of everything, and He brought you close to Him as a confidant. How long did you find it written that the Torah was given before I was created?' Musa said: 'Forty years.' Adam asked: 'Did you find in it that "Adam disobeyed his Lord and went astray" (Taha: 121)?' Musa replied: 'Yes.' Adam said: 'So, do you blame me for doing something that Allah had written for me to do forty years before He created me?' Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: 'So Adam defeated Musa in the argument.'" [Narrated by Muslim]

Narrated by Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him): who is the truthful and the believed: said: "The creation of each one of you is gathered in his mother's womb for forty days as a sperm, then it becomes a clot for a similar period, then it becomes a lump of flesh for a similar period. Then Allah sends an angel to it with four words: to write down its deeds, its lifespan, its provision, and whether it will be miserable or happy. Then the soul is breathed into it. By Him, besides whom there is no deity, one of you may do the deeds of the people of Paradise until there is only an arm's length between him and it, but the decree overtakes him, and he acts in the way of the people of Hell and enters it. And one of you may do the deeds of the people of Hell until there is only an arm's length between him and it, but the decree overtakes him, and he acts in the way of the people of Paradise and enters it." Narrated by Muslim ibn Yasaar: Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked about the verse: "And when your Lord took from the Children of Adam, from their loins, their descendants..." (Al-A'raf 7:172). Umar said: "I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) being asked about it. He said: 'Indeed, Allah created Adam, then He wiped his back with His right hand and extracted from him his descendants. He said: I have created these for Paradise, and they will act according to the deeds of the people of Paradise. Then He wiped his back again and extracted from him his descendants. He said: I have created these for Hell, and they will act according to the deeds of the people of Hell.'" A man asked: "Then what about the deeds, O Messenger of Allah?" The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) replied: "When Allah creates a servant for Paradise, He directs him to the deeds of the people of Paradise, so that he dies while performing the deeds of the people of Paradise, and He will admit him into Paradise through them. And when Allah creates a servant for Hell, He directs him to the deeds of the people of Hell, so that he dies while performing the deeds of the people of Hell, and He will admit him into Hell through them."

Narrated by Ibn al-Dailami: I went to Ubayy ibn Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "Something related to predestination has occurred in my heart, so tell me something that might remove it from my heart." He said: "If Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, were to punish the inhabitants of His heavens and the inhabitants of His earth, He would punish them, and He would not wrong them. And if He had mercy on them, His mercy would be better for them than their deeds. If you were to spend a mountain of gold in the way of Allah, He would not accept it from you until you believe in predestination and know that whatever befalls you could not have missed you, and whatever missed you could not have befallen you. If you were to die without this belief, you would enter Hell." I then went to Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), and he said something similar. Then I went to Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman (may Allah be pleased with him), and he said something similar. Then I went to Zayd ibn Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him), and he narrated to me from the Prophet (peace be upon him) something similar. [Narrated by Ahmad, Abu Dawood, and Ibn Majah]

If he has done so, do not convey my greeting to him. I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say: 'There will be in my Ummah (or in this Ummah) an earthquake, transformation, and a stone-throwing for the people of Qadar.'" English

Narrated by Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "When Allah created Adam, He wiped his back, and from his back fell every soul that He would create from his descendants until the Day of Judgment. He placed between the eyes of each of them a light. Then He displayed them to Adam. Adam said: 'O Lord, who are these?' Allah replied: 'These are your descendants.' He saw a man among them and was impressed by the light between his eyes. Adam said: 'O Lord, who is this?' Allah replied: 'This is Dawood.' Adam said: 'O Lord, how long did You decree his life to be?' Allah said: 'Sixty years.' Adam said: 'O Lord, increase his life by forty years from mine.'" (The narration continues in the original text, explaining how the matter is resolved regarding the extension of Dawood's life.)

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "When Adam's life came to an end, except for forty years, the Angel of Death came to him. Adam said: 'Hasn't there remained forty years of my life?' The angel replied: 'Did you not give it to your son Dawood?' Adam denied it, and his descendants also denied it. Adam forgot, and his descendants forgot. Adam made a mistake, and his descendants made a mistake." [Narrated by Tirmidhi]

Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) said about the verse of Allah: "And when your Lord took from the Children of Adam, from their loins, their descendants" (Surah Al-A'raf: 172), that Allah gathered them, turned them into spirits, and then He formed them. He made them speak, and they responded. Then Allah took the covenant and the oath from them and made them testify upon themselves: "Am I not your Lord?" He said: "I will bear witness to you, the seven heavens and the seven earths, and I will also bear witness to your father, Adam, that you will not say on the Day of Judgment: 'We were unaware of this.' Know that there is no deity except Me, and no Lord other than Me, and do not associate anything with Me. I will send My messengers to remind you of My covenant and oath, and I will send down My books upon you." They said, "We bear witness that You are our Lord and our God. There is no Lord for us other than You, and no God for us other than You." They acknowledged this, and Adam looked at them. He saw the rich and the poor, those of good appearance and others less so. Adam then said, "My Lord, why did You not make all of Your servants equal?" Allah replied, "I loved to be thanked." Then Adam saw the Prophets among them, shining like lamps, with light upon them. They were chosen with another covenant in the message and prophethood. This is as Allah, Blessed and Exalted, said: "And when We took the covenant from the Prophets..." up to His saying, "And Jesus, the son of Mary" (Al-Ahzab: 7). These souls were present, and He sent them to Maryam (Mary). It is narrated from Ubayy that he entered through her. [Narrated by Ahmad]
