How long did you find it written that the Torah was given before I was created?' Musa said: 'Forty years.' Adam asked: 'Did you find in it that "Adam disobeyed his Lord and went astray" (Taha: 121)?' Musa replied: 'Yes.' Adam said: 'So, do you blame me for doing something that Allah had written for me to do forty years before He created me?' Then Allah sends an angel to it with four words: to write down its deeds, its lifespan, its provision, and whether it will be miserable or happy. Then the soul is breathed into it. By Him, besides whom there is no deity, one of you may do the deeds of the people of Paradise until there is only an arm's length between him and it, but the decree overtakes him, and he acts in the way of the people of Hell and enters it. (Al-A'raf 7:172). Umar said: "I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) being asked about it. He said: 'Indeed, Allah created Adam, then He wiped his back with His right hand and extracted from him his descendants. He said: I have created these for Hell, and they will act according to the deeds of the people of Hell.'" A man asked: "Then what about the deeds, O Messenger of Allah?" And when Allah creates a servant for Hell, He directs him to the deeds of the people of Hell, so that he dies while performing the deeds of the people of Hell, and He will admit him into Hell through them."
Narrated by Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "When Allah created Adam, He wiped his back, and from his back fell every soul that He would create from his descendants until the Day of Judgment. He placed between the eyes of each of them a light. Then He displayed them to Adam. Adam said: 'O Lord, who are these?' Allah replied: 'These are your descendants.' He saw a man among them and was impressed by the light between his eyes. Adam said: 'O Lord, who is this?' Allah replied: 'This is Dawood.' Adam said: 'O Lord, how long did You decree his life to be?' Allah said: 'Sixty years.' Adam said: 'O Lord, increase his life by forty years from mine.'" (The narration continues in the original text, explaining how the matter is resolved regarding the extension of Dawood's life.)
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "When Adam's life came to an end, except for forty years, the Angel of Death came to him. Adam said: 'Hasn't there remained forty years of my life?' The angel replied: 'Did you not give it to your son Dawood?' Adam denied it, and his descendants also denied it. Adam forgot, and his descendants forgot. Adam made a mistake, and his descendants made a mistake." [Narrated by Tirmidhi]
Narrated by Abu Darda (may Allah be pleased with him), from the Prophet (peace be upon him): "When Allah created Adam, He struck his right shoulder, and from it He brought forth a white progeny, like grains of sand. Then He struck his left shoulder, and from it He brought forth a black progeny, like masses of charcoal. He said to the ones on the right: 'To Paradise, and I do not care.' And He said to the ones on the left: 'To the Fire, and I do not care.'" [Narrated by Ahmad]
Narrated by Abu Nadrah (may Allah be pleased with him): A man from the companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him), known as Abu Abdullah, was visited by his companions while he was crying. They asked him: "Why are you crying? Did not the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say: 'Take from your beard, and keep it until you meet Me'?" He replied: "Yes, but I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say: 'Indeed, Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, took one handful of creation with His right hand, and another with His other hand, and He said: 'This is for this, and this is for that, and I do not care.' I do not know which of the two handfuls I am in.'" [Narrated by Ahmad]
Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Allah took the covenant from the back of Adam at Namaan (meaning Arafat) and He brought forth from his loins all his descendants, scattering them before him like grains of sand. Then He addressed them saying: 'Am I not your Lord?' They replied: 'Yes, indeed!' He said: 'Do not say on the Day of Resurrection: "We were unaware of this," or "Our forefathers before us associated others with You, and we were their descendants. Will You destroy us for what the wrongdoers did?"' (Surah Al-A'raf: 172-173)" [Narrated by Ahmad]
Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) said about the verse of Allah: "And when your Lord took from the Children of Adam, from their loins, their descendants" (Surah Al-A'raf: 172), that Allah gathered them, turned them into spirits, and then He formed them. He made them speak, and they responded. Then Allah took the covenant and the oath from them and made them testify upon themselves: "Am I not your Lord?" He said: "I will bear witness to you, the seven heavens and the seven earths, and I will also bear witness to your father, Adam, that you will not say on the Day of Judgment: 'We were unaware of this.' Know that there is no deity except Me, and no Lord other than Me, and do not associate anything with Me. I will send My messengers to remind you of My covenant and oath, and I will send down My books upon you." They said, "We bear witness that You are our Lord and our God. There is no Lord for us other than You, and no God for us other than You." They acknowledged this, and Adam looked at them. He saw the rich and the poor, those of good appearance and others less so. Adam then said, "My Lord, why did You not make all of Your servants equal?" Allah replied, "I loved to be thanked." Then Adam saw the Prophets among them, shining like lamps, with light upon them. They were chosen with another covenant in the message and prophethood. This is as Allah, Blessed and Exalted, said: "And when We took the covenant from the Prophets..." up to His saying, "And Jesus, the son of Mary" (Al-Ahzab: 7). These souls were present, and He sent them to Maryam (Mary). It is narrated from Ubayy that he entered through her. [Narrated by Ahmad]
Narrated by Abu Darda (may Allah be pleased with him): While we were sitting with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), discussing what would happen in the future, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "When you hear about a mountain being moved from its place, believe it. But when you hear about a man changing his character, do not believe it; for he will return to what he was originally created for." [Narrated by Ahmad]
Narrated by Umm Salama (may Allah be pleased with her): She said, "O Messenger of Allah, do you still suffer pain every year from the poisoned sheep that you ate?" He replied: "Nothing has harmed me from it except what was destined for me, while Adam was still in his clay." [Narrated by Ibn Majah]
