بَابُ مَا يَقُوْلُ عِنْدَ الصَّبَاحِ وَالْمَسَاءِ وَالْمَنَامِWhat to Say in the Morning, Evening, and Before Sleeping
وَعَنِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ التَّمِيمِيَّ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ رَسُوْلِ اللهِﷺ أَنَّهُ أَسَرَّ إِلَيْهِ فَقَالَ: «إِذَا انْصَرَفْتَ مِنْ صَلَاةِ الْمَغْرِبِ فَقُلْ : اللَّهُمَّ أَجِرْنِي مِنَ النَّارِ، سَبْعَ مَرَّاتٍ، فَإِنَّكَ إِذَا قُلْتَ ذَلِكَ ثُمَّ مِتَّ فِي لَيْلَتِكَ كُتِبَ لَكَ جِوَارٌ مِنْهَا، وَإِذَا صَلَّيْتَ الصُّبْحَ فَقُلْ كَذَلِكَ؛ فَإِنَّكَ إِنْ مِتَّ فِي يَوْمِكَ كُتِبَ لَكَ جِوَارٌ مِنْهَا». رَوَاهُ أَبُو دَاوُدَ.
Al-Harith ibn Muslim at-Tamimi narrated from his father that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) confided in him, saying: "When you finish Maghrib prayer, say: 'O Allah, save me from the Fire,' seven times. If you say this and then die that night, it will be recorded as a protection for you from it. And when you pray Fajr, say the same, for if you die that day, it will be recorded as a protection for you from it." [Narrated by Abu Dawud]
وَعَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي بَكْرَةَ قَالَ: قُلْتُ لِأَبِي: يَا أَبَتِ إِنِّي أَسْمَعُكَ تَقُوْلُ كُلَّ غَدَاةٍ: اللهُمَّ عَافِنِي فِي بَدَنِي، اللهُمَّ عَافِنِي فِي سَمْعِي، اللهُمَّ عَافِنِي فِي بَصَرِي، لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ، تُكَرِّرُهَا ثَلَاثًا حِينَ تُصْبِحُ وَثَلَاثًا حِينَ تُمْسِي، فَقَالَ: يَا بُنَيَّ، سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَدْعُوْ بِهِنَّ فَأَنَا أُحِبُّ أَنْ أَسْتَنَّ بِسُنَّتِهِ. رَوَاهُ أَبُوْ دَاوُدَ.
Abdur-Rahman ibn Abi Bakra said: I said to my father, "O father, I hear you saying every morning: 'O Allah, grant me well-being in my body. O Allah, grant me well-being in my hearing. O Allah, grant me well-being in my sight. There is no god but You.' You repeat it three times in the morning and three times in the evening." He replied, "O my son, I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) supplicating with these words, and I love to follow his Sunnah." [Narrated by Abu Dawud]
وَعَنْ أَبَانَ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ أَبِي يَقُولُ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِﷺ: «مَا مِنْ عَبْدٍ يَقُولُ فِي صَبَاحِ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ وَمَسَاءِ كُلَّ لَيْلَةٍ : بِسْمِ اللهِ الَّذِي لَا يَضُرُّ مَعَ اسْمِهِ شَيْءٌ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَلَا فِي السَّمَاءِ وَهُوَ السَّمِيعُ الْعَلِيمُ، ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ، لَمْ يَضُرَّهُ شَيْءٌ». كَانَ أَبَانُ قَدْ أَصَابَهُ طَرَفُ فَالِجٍ، فَجَعَلَ الرَّجُلُ يَنْظُرُ إِلَيْهِ، فَقَالَ لَهُ أَبَانُ: مَا تَنْظُرُ؟ أَمَا إِنَّ الْحَدِيثَ كَمَا حَدَّثْتُكَ، وَلَكِنِّي لَمْ أَقُلْهُ يَوْمَئِذٍ لِيُمْضِيَ اللهُ عَلَيَّ قَدَرَهُ رَوَاهُ التَّرْمِذِيُّ وَابْنُ مَاجَه وَأَبُو دَاوُدَ. وَفِي رِوَايَةٍ: «لَمْ تُصِبْهُ فُجَاءَةُ بَلَاءِ حَتَّى يُصْبِحَ، وَمَنْ قَالَهَا حِيْنَ يُصْبِحُ لَمْ تُصِبْهُ فُجَاءَةُ بَلَاءٍ حَتَّى يُمْسِيَ».
Aban ibn Uthman said: I heard my father say that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "There is no servant who says every morning and evening: 'In the name of Allah, with Whose name nothing can harm on earth or in heaven, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing,' three times, except that nothing will harm him." Aban had suffered a stroke, and a man looked at him (in surprise). Aban said, "Why are you looking at me? By Allah, the Hadith is as I narrated to you, but I did not say it that day so that Allah's decree would take its course." [Narrated by Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah, and Abu Dawud]
In another narration: "He will not be afflicted by any sudden calamity until morning, and whoever says it in the morning will not be afflicted by any sudden calamity until evening."
وَعَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسِ (رضي الله عنه) قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُوْلُ اللهِ ﷺ: «مَنْ قَالَ حِينَ يُصْبِحُ: ﴿فَسُبْحَانَ اللهِ حِينَ تُمْسُونَ وَحِينَ تُصْبِحُوْنَ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ فِي السَّمَوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَعَشِيًّا وَحِينَ تُظْهِرُوْنَ}إِلَى قَوْلِهِ: ﴿وَكَذَلِكَ تُخْرَجُوْنَ (الروم: ۱۹ أَدْرَكَ مَا فَاتَهُ فِي يَوْمِهِ ذَلِكَ، وَمَنْ قَالَهُنَّ حِينَ يُمْسِي أَدْرَكَ مَا فَاتَهُ فِي لَيْلَتِهِ». رَوَاهُ أَبُو دَاوُدَ.
Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Whoever says in the morning: 'So exalted is Allah when you reach the evening and when you reach the morning. And to Him is [all] praise throughout the heavens and the earth, and [exalted is He] at night and when you are at noon' (Qur'an 30:17-19), he will attain what he missed that day. And whoever says it in the evening will attain what he missed that night." [Narrated by Abu Dawud]

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Whoever says in the morning: 'O Allah, we have entered morning bearing witness to You, to the bearers of Your Throne, to Your angels, and to all Your creation that You are Allah, there is no god but You alone, with no partner, and that Muhammad is Your servant and Messenger,' Allah will forgive him whatever sins he commits that day. And if he says it in the evening, Allah will forgive him whatever sins he commits that night." [Narrated by Tirmidhi and Abu Dawud]
وَعَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ غَنَّامٍ (رضي الله عنه) قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُوْلُ اللهِ ﷺ: «مَنْ قَالَ حِيْنَ يُصْبِحُ اللَّهُمَّ مَا أَصْبَحَ بِي مِنْ نِعْمَةٍ فَمِنْكَ، وَحْدَكَ لا شَرِيكَ لَكَ، فَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ وَلَكَ الشُّكْرُ، فَقَدْ أَدَّى شُكْرَ يَوْمِهِ، وَمَنْ قَالَ مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ حِينَ يُمْسِي فَقَدْ أَدَّى شُكْرَ لَيْلَتِهِ». رَوَاهُ أَبُو دَاوُدَ.
Abdullah ibn Ghannam (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Whoever says in the morning: 'O Allah, whatever blessing I or any of Your creation have received this morning is from You alone, with no partner. To You is all praise and gratitude,' he has fulfilled his gratitude for that day. And whoever says the same in the evening has fulfilled his gratitude for that night." [Narrated by Abu Dawud]
وَعَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ (رضي الله عنهما) قَالَ: لَمْ يَكُنْ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَدَعُ هَؤُلَاءِ الْكَلِمَاتِ حِيْنَ يُمْسِي وَحِينَ يُصْبِحُ : اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْعَافِيَةَ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ، اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْعَفْوَ وَالْعَافِيَةَ فِي دِينِي وَدُنْيَايَ وَأَهْلِي وَمَالِي ، اللهُمَّ اسْتُرْ عَوْرَاتِي وَآمِنْ رَوْعَاتِي اللَّهُمَّ احْفَظْنِي مِنْ بَيْنِ يَدَيَّ وَمِنْ خَلْفِي وَعَنْ يَمِينِي وَعَنْ شِمَالِي وَمِنْ فَوْقِي، وَأَعُوذُ بِعَظَمَتِكَ أَنْ أُغْتَالَ مِنْ تَحْتِي يَعْنِي الْخَسْفَ. رَوَاهُ أَبُو دَاوُدَ.
Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) never failed to say these words every evening and morning: "O Allah, I ask You for well-being in this world and the Hereafter. O Allah, I ask You for pardon and well-being in my religion, my worldly affairs, my family and my wealth. O Allah, conceal my faults and calm my fears. O Allah, protect me from before me and behind me, from my right and my left, and from above me, and I seek refuge in Your greatness from being swallowed up by the earth." [Narrated by Abu Dawud]

1 The statement: "And when he woke up" etc. One should wake up remembering Allah and resolving to be pious, avoiding what Allah has forbidden, and intending not to wrong any of Allah's servants. As mentioned in Al-Ghara'ib. This is stated in Al-'Alamgiriyyah.

Some of the daughters of the Prophet (ﷺ) reported that he would teach them to say when morning came: "Glory be to Allah and praise be to Him. There is no power except with Allah. What Allah wills happens, and what He does not will does not happen. I know that Allah has power over all things and that Allah encompasses all things in knowledge." Whoever says this in the morning will be protected until evening, and whoever says it in the evening will be protected until morning. [Narrated by Abu Dawud]
وَعَنْ ثَوْبَانَ (رضي الله عنه) قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ : مَا مِنْ عَبْدٍ مُسْلِمٍ يَقُوْلُ إِذَا أَمْسَى وَإِذَا أَصْبَحَ ثَلَاثًا: رَضِيتُ بِاللهِ رَبًّا وَبِالْإِسْلَامِ دِينًا وَبِمُحَمَّدٍ نَبِيًّا إِلَّا كَانَ حَقًّا عَلَىاللهِ أَنْ يُرْضِيَهُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ». رَوَاهُ أَحْمَدُ وَالتَّرْمِذِيُّ.
Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "No Muslim servant says three times when evening and morning come: 'I am pleased with Allah as my Lord, with Islam as my religion, and with Muhammad as my Prophet,' except that it becomes Allah's obligation to please him on the Day of Resurrection." [Narrated by Ahmad and Tirmidhi]
وَعَنْ أَبِي عَيَّاشٍ (رضي الله عنه) أَنَّ رَسُوْلَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ: «مَنْ قَالَ إِذَا أَصْبَحَ: لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ، لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ وَهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ، كَانَ لَهُ عِدْلُ رَقَبَةٍ مِنْ وُلْدِ إِسْمَاعِيلَ، وَكُتِبَ لَهُ عَشْرُ حَسَنَاتٍ وَحُطَّ عَنْهُ عَشْرُ سَيِّئَاتٍ، وَرُفِعَ لَهُ عَشْرُ دَرَجَاتٍ، وَكَانَ فِي حِرْزِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ حَتَّى يُمْسِيَ، وَإِنْ قَالَهَا إِذَا أَمْسَى كَانَ لَهُ مِثْلُ ذَلِكَ حَتَّى يُصْبِحَ، فَرَأَى رَجُلٌ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فِيمَا يَرَى النَّائِمُ، فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، إِنَّ أَبَا عَيَّاشٍ يُحَدِّثُ عَنْكَ بِكَذَا وَكَذَا؟ قَالَ: صَدَقَ أَبُو عَيَّاشٍ». رَوَاهُ أَبُو دَاوُدَ وَابْنُ مَاجَه.
Abu Ayyash (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Whoever says when morning comes: 'There is no god but Allah alone, with no partner. To Him belongs the dominion and praise, and He has power over all things,' it will equal the reward of freeing a slave from the descendants of Ishmael, ten good deeds will be recorded for him, ten sins will be erased, he will be raised ten degrees, and he will be protected from Satan until evening. If he says it in the evening, he will have the same reward until morning." [Narrated by Abu Dawud and Ibn Majah]
وَعَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ (رضي الله عنه) قَالَ: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِذَا أَمْسَى قَالَ: «أَمْسَيْنَا وَأَمْسَى الْمُلْكُ لِلَّهِ وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ، لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ، وَهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرُ، اللهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ مِنْ خَيْرِ هَذِهِ اللَّيْلَةِ وَخَيْرِ مَا فِيْهَا، وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّهَا وَشَرِّ مَا فِيْهَا، اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْكَسَلِ وَسُوءِ الْكِبَرِ وَفِتْنَةِ الدُّنْيَا وَعَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ، وَإِذَا۱ أَصْبَحَ قَالَ ذَلِكَ أَيْضًا: أَصْبَحْنَا وَأَصْبَحَ الْمُلْكُ لِلَّهِ». وَفِي رِوَايَةٍ: «رَبِّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابٍ فِي النَّارِ وَعَذَابٍ فِي الْقَبْرِ». رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ.
Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that when evening came, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) would say: "We have entered evening and all sovereignty belongs to Allah. Praise be to Allah. There is no god but Allah alone with no partner. To Him belongs the dominion and praise, and He has power over all things. O Allah, I ask You for the good of this night and the good of what it contains, and I seek refuge in You from its evil and the evil it contains. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from laziness, bad old age, the trials of this world, and the punishment of the grave." When morning came, he would say the same, replacing "evening" with "morning." [Narrated by Muslim]

In another narration: "From bad pride and old age. My Lord, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the Fire and the punishment of the grave." When morning came, he would say the same, replacing "evening" with "morning." [Narrated by Abu Dawud and Tirmidhi]
وَعَنْ أَبِي مَالِكٍ (رضي الله عنه) أَنَّ رَسُوْلَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ: «إِذَا أَصْبَحَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَقُلْ: أَصْبَحْنَا وَأَصْبَحَ الْمُلْكُ لِلهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ، اللهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ خَيْرَ هَذَا الْيَوْمِ وَفَتْحَهُ وَنَصْرَهُ وَنُورَهُ وَبَرَكَتَهُ وَهُدَاهُ، وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا فِيهِ وَمَنْ شَرِّ مَا بَعْدَهُ. ثُمَّ إِذَا أَمْسَى فَلْيَقُلْ مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ. رَوَاهُ أَبُو دَاوُدَ.
Abu Malik al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "When any of you enters morning, let him say: 'We have entered morning and all sovereignty belongs to Allah, Lord of the worlds. O Allah, I ask You for the good of this day, its opening, victory, light, blessing and guidance. I seek refuge in You from the evil it contains and the evil that follows it.' Then if he says the same when evening comes, he will have the same reward." [Narrated by Abu Dawud]
وَعَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ أَبِي أَوْفَى (رضي الله عنه) قَالَ: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِﷺ إِذَا أَصْبَحَ قَالَ: أَصْبَحْنَا وَأَصْبَحَ الْمُلْكُ لِلهِ ، وَالْحَمْدُ لِلهِ وَالْكِبْرِيَاءُ وَالْعَظَمَةُ لِلَّهِ، وَالْخَلْقُ وَالْأَمْرُ وَاللَّيْلُ وَالنَّهَارُ وَمَا سَكَنَ فِيْهِمَا لِلهِ ، اللهُمَّ اجْعَلْ أَوَّلَ هَذَا النَّهَارِ صَلَاحًا وَأَوْسَطَهُ نَجَاحًا وَآخِرَهُ فَلَاحًا يَا أَرْحَمَ الرَّاحِمِينَ». ذَكَرَهُ النَّوَوِيُّ فِي كِتَابِ الْأَذْكَارِ بِرِوَايَةِ ابْنِ السِّنِّي.
Abdullah ibn Abi Awfa (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that when morning came, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) would say: "We have entered morning and all sovereignty belongs to Allah. Praise be to Allah. Grandeur and greatness belong to Allah. Creation and command belong to Allah. Night and day and all they contain belong to Allah. O Allah, make the beginning of this day righteousness, its middle success, and its end salvation. O Most Merciful of the merciful." [Mentioned by an-Nawawi in Kitab al-Adhkar]
وَعَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبْزَى (رضي الله عنه) قَالَ: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِﷺ يَقُوْلُ إِذَا أَصْبَحَ: أَصْبَحْنَا عَلَى فِطْرَةِ الْإِسْلَامِ وَعَلَى كَلِمَةِ الْإِخْلَاصِ وَعَلَى دِينِ نَبِيِّنَا مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى مِلَّةِ أَبِينَا إِبْرَاهِيمَ حَنِيفًا مُسْلِمًا وَمَا كَانَ مِنَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ. رَوَاهُ أَحْمَدُ وَالدَّارِمِيُّ، وَقَالَ صَاحِبُ السلاح»: أَخْرَجَهُ النَّسَائِيُّ مِنْ طُرُقٍ، وَرِجَالُ إِسْنَادِهِ رِجَالُ الصَّحِيحِ.
Abdur-Rahman ibn Abza (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) would say when morning came: "We have entered morning upon the natural religion of Islam, upon the word of sincerity, upon the religion of our Prophet Muhammad, and upon the way of our father Ibrahim, who was upright and Muslim, and was not of the polytheists." [Narrated by Ahmad and ad-Darimi]
وَعَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ (رضي الله عنه) قَالَ : كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِذَا أَصْبَحَ قَالَ: «اللَّهُمَّ بِكَ أَصْبَحْنَا وَبِكَ أَمْسَيْنَا وَبِكَ نَحْيَا وَبِكَ نَمُوتُ وَإِلَيْكَ الْمَصِيرُ وَإِذَا أَمْسَى قَالَ: اللَّهُمَّ بِكَ أَمْسَيْنَا وَبِكَ نَحْيَا وَبِكَ نَمُوتُ وَإِلَيْكَ النُّشُورُ. رَوَاهُ التَّرْمِذِيُّ وَأَبُوْ دَاوُدَ وَابْنُ مَاجَه.
Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that when morning came, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) would say: "O Allah, by You we enter morning, by You we enter evening, by You we live, by You we die, and to You is the final return." When evening came, he would say: "O Allah, by You we enter evening, by You we live, by You we die, and to You is the resurrection." [Narrated by Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud and Ibn Majah]
وَعَنْهُ (رضي الله عنه) قَالَ: قَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ (رضي الله عنه) قُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، مُرْنِي بِشَيْءٍ أَقُولُهُ إِذَا أَصْبَحْتُوَإِذَا أَمْسَيْتُ، قَالَ: «قُلْ اللَّهُمَّ عَالِمَ الْغَيْبِ وَالشَّهَادَةِ، فَاطِرَ السَّمَوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ، رَبَّ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ وَمَلِيكَهُ، أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ، أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ نَفْسِي وَمِنْ شَرِّ الشَّيْطَانِ وَشِرْكِهِ». قَالَ: «قُلْهُ إِذَا أَصْبَحْتَ وَإِذَا أَمْسَيْتَ وَإِذَا أَخَذْتَ مَضْجَعَكَ». رَوَاهُ التَّرْمِذِيُّ وَأَبُو دَاوُدَ وَالدَّارِميُّ.
Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Messenger of Allah, tell me something to say when morning and evening come." He said: "Say: 'O Allah, Knower of the unseen and the seen, Creator of the heavens and earth, Lord of everything and its Sovereign, I bear witness that there is no god but You. I seek refuge in You from the evil of my soul and from the evil of Satan and his partners.' Say this when morning comes, when evening comes, and when you go to bed." [Narrated by Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud and ad-Darimi]
وَعَنْ شَدَّادِ بْنِ أَوْسٍ (رضي الله عنه) قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُوْلُ اللهِﷺ: «مَا مِنْ مُسْلِمٍ يَأْخُذُ مَضْجَعَهُ بِقِرَاءَةِ سُوْرَةٍ مِنْ كِتَابِ اللهِ إِلَّا وَكَّلَ اللهُ بِهِ مَلَكًا، فَلَا يَقْرُبُهُ شَيْءٌ يُؤْذِيْهِ حَتَّى يَهُنَّ مَتَى هَبَّ. رَوَاهُ التَّرْمِذِيُّ.
Shaddad ibn Aws (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "No Muslim goes to bed reciting a chapter from Allah's Book except that Allah assigns an angel to protect him from all harm until he wakes up." [Narrated by Tirmidhi]
وَعَنْ أَبِي الْأَزْهَرِ الْأَنْمَارِيِّ (رضي الله عنه)، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ كَانَ إِذَا أَخَذَ مَضْجَعَهُ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ قَالَ: «بِاسْمِ اللهِ وَضَعْتُ جَنْبِي لِلَّهِ اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي ذَنْبِي وَاخْسَأْ شَيْطَانِي وَفُكَ رِهَانِي وَاجْعَلْنِي فِي النَّدِيَّ الْأَعْلَى». رَوَاهُ أَبُوْ دَاوُدَ.
Abu al-Azhar al-Anmari (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that when the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) went to bed at night, he would say: "In the name of Allah I lay my side down. O Allah, forgive my sins, drive away my Satan, free me from my obligations, and place me in the highest company." [Narrated by Abu Dawud]
وَعَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ (رضي الله عنهما) أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ كَانَ إِذَا أَخَذَ مَضْجَعَهُ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ قَالَ: «الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي كَفَانِي وَآوَانِي وَأَطْعَمَنِي وَسَقَانِي، وَالَّذِي مَنَّ عَلَيَّ فَأَفْضَلَ، وَالَّذِي أَعْطَانِي فَأَجْزَلَ، الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ عَلَى كُلِّ حَالٍ، اللهُمَّ رَبَّ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ وَمَلِيكَهُ وَإِلَهَ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ النَّارِ». رَوَاهُ أَبُو دَاوُدَ.
Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that when the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) went to bed at night, he would say: "Praise be to Allah Who has sufficed me, given me shelter, fed me and given me drink. Praise be to Allah Who has favored me and been generous to me. Praise be to Allah in every circumstance. O Allah, Lord of all things and their Sovereign, God of all things, I seek refuge in You from the Fire." [Narrated by Abu Dawud]

۲ قوله: النار جبار : يعني ما أحرقته النار التي يوقدها الرجل في ملكه فيطير بها الريح إلى ملك غيره من حيث لا يمكنه ردُّها فهو هدر، وهذا إذا أوقد في وقت سكون الريح، ثم هبت الريح، كذا في «اللمعات».

Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that when the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) went to bed, he would say: "O Allah, I seek refuge in Your Noble Face and Your perfect words from the evil of what You take by the forelock. O Allah, You remove sin and debt. O Allah, Your forces are never defeated, Your promise is never broken, and the wealthy cannot do without You. Glory and praise be to You." [Narrated by Abu Dawud]

1 The statement: "Prohibited temporary marriage, etc.": Know that temporary marriage is forbidden by consensus of scholars and the four Imams. Attributing its permissibility to Malik, as occurred in "Al-Hidayah," is a mistake, as clarified by its commentators. How could it be when the Malikis agree on it, and none of their books permit it, but are filled with its prohibition? Malik cited in his "Muwatta" Hadiths that decisively prove its prohibition forever, and he only cites what is acted upon, as in "Tansiq an-Nizam" and "Fath al-Qadir."

Hudhayfa (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that when the Prophet (ﷺ) went to bed at night, he would place his hand under his cheek and say: "O Allah, in Your name I die and live." When he woke up, he would say: "Praise be to Allah Who gave us life after causing us to die, and to Him is the resurrection." [Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim]

1 The statement: "He would place his hand under his cheek" - In Al-'Alamgiriyyah it is mentioned that it is recommended for a person to sleep in a state of purity, lying on his right side facing the qiblah for a while, then turning to his left side. As mentioned in As-Sirajiyyah.

1 “The rider’s damage…”: Abu Hanifah says if a rider’s animal kicks someone, it is void; if it strikes with its hand, it is guaranteed, as the rider controls the front, not the back. Ash-Shafi‘i says hand and leg are equally guaranteed. [From Al-Marqah].
2 “Fire’s damage…”: If a man lights a fire on his property and wind carries it to another’s, beyond his control, it is void, if lit when the wind was still and then blew. [From Al-Luma‘at].

Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Whoever says when going to bed: 'I seek forgiveness from Allah besides Whom there is no god, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer, and I repent to Him,' three times, Allah will forgive his sins, even if they are as much as the foam of the sea, or as numerous as the grains of sand, or as many as the leaves of trees, or as the days of this world." Burayda (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that Khalid ibn al-Walid complained to the Prophet (ﷺ), saying: "O Messenger of Allah, I cannot sleep at night due to restlessness." The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "When you go to bed, say: 'O Allah, Lord of the seven heavens and what they contain, Lord of the earths and what they contain, Lord of the devils and whom they misguide, be my protector from the evil of all Your creatures lest any of them transgress against me or oppress me. Mighty is Your protection, and great is Your praise. There is no god but You. There is no god but You.'" [Narrated by Tirmidhi]

Then let him say: 'In Your name, my Lord, I lay my side down, and by You I raise it. If You take my soul, have mercy on it, and if You release it, protect it as You protect Your righteous servants.'" Al-Bara' ibn 'Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that when the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) went to bed, he would lie on his right side and say: "O Allah, I submit myself to You, turn my face to You, entrust my affairs to You, and rely completely on You, out of hope in You and fear of You. There is no refuge or escape from You except to You. I believe in Your Book which You have revealed and in Your Prophet whom You have sent." The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Whoever says these words and then dies that night will die upon the natural faith." [Agreed upon]

3 The statement: "Perform ablution" - Ibn Battal said that ablution before sleep is recommended and encouraged. As mentioned in 'Umdat al-Qari. And in Ad-Durr al-Mukhtar: "It is Sunnah for sleeping."

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that when the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) went to bed, he would say: "Praise be to Allah Who has fed us, given us drink, sufficed us and given us shelter. How many are those who have no one to suffice them or give them shelter." [Narrated by Muslim]
وَعَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ (رضي الله عنه) عَنِ النَّبِيِّ الله أَنَّهُ كَانَ يَقُولُ إِذَا أَوَى إِلَى فِرَاشِهِ: اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّ السَّمَوَاتِ وَرَبَّ الْأَرْضِ وَرَبَّ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ، فَالِقَ الْحَبِّ وَالنَّوَى، مُنَزِّلَ التَّوْرَاةِ وَالْإِنْجِيلِ وَالْقُرْآنِ، أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ كُلِّ ذِي شَرِّ أَنْتَ آخِذُ بِنَاصِيَتِهِ، أَنْتَ الْأَوَّلُ فَلَيْسَ قَبْلَكَ شَيْءٌ، وَأَنْتَ الْآخِرُ فَلَيْسَ بَعْدَكَ شَيْءٌ، وَأَنْتَ الظَّاهِرُ فَلَيْسَ فَوْقَكَ شَيْءٌ، وَأَنْتَ الْبَاطِنُ فَلَيْسَ دُوْنَكَ شَيْءٌ، اقْضِ عَنِّي الدَّيْنَ وَأَغْنِنِي مِنَ الْفَقْرِ». رَوَاهُ أَبُو دَاوُدَ وَالتَّرْمِذِيُّ وَابْنُ مَاجَه. رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمُ مَعَ اخْتِلَافٍ يَسِيرٍ.
Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (ﷺ) would say when going to bed: "O Allah, Lord of the heavens and the earth, Lord of all things, Splitter of the seed and the date-stone, Revealer of the Torah, the Gospel and the Qur'an, I seek refuge in You from the evil of every creature that You seize by the forelock. You are the First, nothing is before You. You are the Last, nothing is after You. You are the Manifest, nothing is above You. You are the Hidden, nothing is beyond You. Relieve me of my debt and enrich me from poverty." [Narrated by Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah]
وَعَنْ عَليٍّ(رضي الله عنه)أَنَّ فَاطِمَةَ أَتَتْ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ تَشْكُرْ إِلَيْهِ مَا تَلْقَى فِي يَدِهَا مِنَ الرَّحَى، وَبَلَغَهَا أَنَّهُ جَاءَهُ رَقِيقٌ فَلَمْ تُصَادِفَهُ، فَذَكَرَتْ ذَلِكَ لِعَائِشَةَ، فَلَمَّا جَاءَ أَخْبَرَتْهُ عَائِشَةُ. قَالَ: فَجَاءَنَا وَقَدْ أَخَذْنَا مَضَاجِعَنَا، فَذَهَبْنَا نَقُومُ فَقَالَ: «عَلَى مَكَانِكُمَا»، فَجَاءَ فَقَعَدَ۱ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَهَا، حَتَّى وَجَدْتُ بَرْدَ قَدَمَيْهِ عَلَى بَطْنِي، فَقَالَ: «أَلَا أَدُلُّكُمَا عَلَى خَيْرٍ مِمَّا سَأَلْتُمَا، إِذَا أَخَذْتُمَا مَضَاجِعَكُمَا فَسَبِّحَا ثَلَاثًا وَثَلَاثِينَ، وَاحْمَدًا ثَلَاثًا وَثَلَاثِينَ، وَكَبَّرَا أَرْبَعًا وَثَلَاثِينَ، فَهُوَ خَيْرٌ لَكُمَا مِنْ خَادِمٍ». مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ.
Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that Fatimah came to the Prophet (ﷺ) complaining about the hardship of grinding grain with her hand mill. When she heard that he had received some slaves, she went to see him but didn't find him. She told Aisha about it, and when the Prophet (ﷺ) came, Aisha informed him. He came to us while we had gone to bed. We started to get up, but he said, "Stay where you are." Then he sat between us until I felt the coolness of his feet on my stomach. He said, "Shall I teach you something better than what you asked for? When you go to bed, say 'SubhanAllah' 33 times, 'Alhamdulillah' 33 times, and 'Allahu Akbar' 34 times. This is better for you than having a servant." [Agreed upon]

وَعَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْعَاصِ (رضي الله عنهما)قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: «خَلَتَانِ لَا يُحْصِيهِمَا رَجُلٌ مُسْلِمٌ إِلَّا دَخَلَ الْجَنَّةَ، أَلَا وَهُمَا يَسِيرُ، وَمَنْ يَعْمَلُ بِهِمَا قَلِيلٌ، يُسَبِّحُ اللَّهَ فِي دُبُرٍ كُلِّ صَلَاةٍ عَشْرًا، وَيَحْمَدُهُ عَشْرًا، وَيُكَبِّرُهُ عَشْرًا»، قَالَ: فَأَنَا رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِﷺ يَعْقِدُهَا بِيَدِهِ، قَالَ: «فَتِلْكَ خَمْسُوْنَ وَمِائَةٌ بِاللِّسَانِ، وَأَلْفُ وَخَمْسُ مِائَةٍ فِي الْمِيزَانِ، وَإِذَا أَخَذْتَ مَضْجَعَكَ تُسَبِّحُهُ وَتُكَبِّرُهُ وَتَحْمَدُهُ مِائَةً، فَتِلْكَ مِائَةُ بِالنِّسَانِ، وَأَلْفُ فِي الْمِيزَانِ فَأَيُّكُمْ يَعْمَلُ فِي الْيَوْمِ وَاللَّيْلَةِ أَلْفَيْنِ وَخَمْسَ مِائَةِ سَيِّئَةٍ؟». قَالُوا: فَكَيْفَ لَا يُحْصِيهَا؟ قَالَ: «يَأْتِي أَحَدَكُمُ الشَّيْطَانُ وَهُوَ فِي صَلَاتِهِ فَيَقُولُ: اذْكُرْ كَذَا اذْكُرْ كَذَا حَتَّى يَنْفَتِلَ، فَلَعَلَّهُ أَن لَا يَفْعَلَ، وَيَأْتِيهِ فِي مَضْجَعِهِ، فَلَا يَزَالُ يُنَوِّمُهُ حَتَّى يَنَامَ. رَوَاهُ التَّرْمِذِيُّ وَأَبُوْ دَاوُدَ وَالنَّسَائِيُّ.
وَفِي رِوَايَةِ أَبِي دَاوُدَ: وَقَالَ: «خَصْلَتَانِ أَوْ خَلَّتَانِ لَا يُحَافِظُ عَلَيْهِمَا عَبْدُ مُسْلِمٌ وَكَذَا فِي رِوَايَتِهِ بَعْدَ قَوْلِهِ: «وَأَلْفُ وَخَمْسُ مِائَةٍ فِي الْمِيزَانِ: قَالَ: وَيُكَبِّرُ أَرْبَعًا وَثَلَاثِينَ إِذَا أَخَذَ مَضْجَعَهُ وَيَحْمَدُ ثَلَاثًا وَثَلَاثِينَ وَيُسَبِّحُ ثَلَاثًا وَثَلَاثِينَ». وَفِي أَكْثَرِ نُسَخِ الْمَصَابِيحِ»: عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو.
Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "There are two practices that no Muslim maintains without entering Paradise. They are easy, but few do them: glorify Allah 10 times, praise Him 10 times, and declare His greatness 10 times after every prayer." The Prophet (ﷺ) would count them on his fingers. "That makes 150 with the tongue but 1500 in the scales. And when you go to bed, glorify, praise and declare Allah's greatness 100 times - that's 100 with the tongue but 1000 in the scales. Who among you commits 2500 sins in a day?" They asked, "How can one not maintain them?" He replied, "Satan comes to one of you during prayer and makes him remember things until he becomes distracted, or comes to him in bed and makes him sleep." [Narrated by Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud and Nasa'i]
