It is narrated from Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "None of you should pray in a single garment with nothing covering his shoulders." 1 [Agreed upon]
Notes /
1 His statement: "Nothing covering his shoulders" – and the more apparent interpretation is that the pronoun "from it" refers to the garment in general. This indicates the recommendation (sunnah) of placing the rida' (upper garment) or similar, such as the end of the izaar (lower garment) or other clothing, on the shoulders, and the dislike (karahah) of leaving it off when one is able to do so. Malik, Abu Hanifa, Al-Shafi'i, and the majority said: This prohibition is for reverence (tanzih), not for strict prohibition (tahrim). Therefore, if one prays in a single garment that covers their private parts but has nothing on their shoulders, their prayer is valid but disliked. As for Ahmad and some of the early scholars (Salaf), they held the view that the prayer is not valid, based on the apparent meaning of the hadith. This is mentioned in Al-Mirqat.

It is narrated from Sa'id ibn Al-Harith that he said: "We asked Jabir ibn Abdullah about praying in a single garment. He said: 'I went out with the Prophet (peace be upon him) on one of his journeys, and one night I went to attend to some matter. I found him praying, and I was wearing a single garment, so I wrapped myself in it and prayed beside him. When he finished, he said: 'What is this wrapping, O Jabir?' I told him about my need. When I finished, he said: 'If the garment is wide, then wrap yourself in it, and if it is narrow, then tie it around your waist.'" [Narrated by Al-Bukhari] In another narration by Muslim: "If it is wide, then cross its ends, and if it is narrow, then tie it tightly around your waist."
It is narrated from Muhammad ibn Al-Munkadir that he said: "Jabir prayed in a loincloth that he had tied from the back, and his clothes were placed on a hanger. Someone said to him: 'You are praying in a single loincloth?' He replied: 'I only did that so that someone like you, who is foolish, would see me. Who among us had two garments during the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)?'" [Narrated by Al-Bukhari]
It is narrated from Ubay ibn Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "Praying in a single garment is a Sunnah. We used to do it with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), and it was not considered a fault. Then Ibn Mas'ud said: 'That was when clothes were scarce, but when Allah provides abundance, praying in two garments is more virtuous.'" [Narrated by Ahmad]
It is narrated from Salamah ibn Al-Akwa' (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I am a man who hunts, so can I pray in a single shirt?' He said: 'Yes, and tie it even with a thorn.'" 1 [Narrated by Abu Dawud, and a similar narration is found in Al-Nasa’i]
This is the position on which the fatwa is given because it is explicitly narrated from Abu Hanifah and Abu Yusuf that the prayer does not become invalid due to this, as mentioned in al-Munyah and other works. Therefore, if one sees his 'awrah through the opening of his garment, the prayer does not become invalid, even though it is disliked.
This is because it is stated in al-Siraj: “He should button it due to this hadith”, which implies obligation, and neglecting it results in disapproval (karahah). However, this does not contradict their explicit statement that the prayer does not become invalid, and thus, this opinion is the preferred one, as mentioned in Sharh al-Munyah.
Notes /
1 His statement “and tie it, even with a thorn”: It is mentioned in al-Durr al-Mukhtar and Radd al-Muhtar that the condition for covering the 'awrah is that it must be concealed from others, meaning from the view of others from the sides, not from below. This applies even in a figurative sense, such as in a dark place or an empty place, where the 'awrah is considered visible in a figurative sense, thus covering it remains a requirement. However, it is not a condition to cover it from oneself.

He said: "Yes, if the dress is long enough to cover the tops of her feet." 1 [Narrated by Abu Dawud]
Notes /
1 The statement: "It covers the tops of her feet." According to Abu Hanifah, the feet are part of the private area (awrah), and this is also the opinion of Ash-Shafi'i, based on this hadith. It is mentioned in Sharh An-Nuqayah. In Al-Khaniyyah, it is stated: "The correct view is that exposing a quarter of the foot invalidates the prayer, just like exposing other parts of the body that are considered private."

They replied, "We saw you remove your shoes, so we removed ours." The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said, "Gabriel came to me and informed me that there was dirt on them.
