Narrated by Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with him: The Prophet, peace be upon him, used to go to the prayer ground with a short spear (Anazah) carried in front of him. It would be planted in the prayer ground, and he would pray facing it. [Narrated by Al-Bukhari]

Narrated by Abu Hujayfah, may Allah be pleased with him: I saw the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, in Makkah at Al-Abtah in a red leather tent. I saw Bilal take the water left from the ablution of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, and the people rushed to it. Whoever got some of it would rub it on themselves, and whoever did not get any would take the moisture from the hands of their companions. Then I saw Bilal take a short spear and plant it. The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, came out wearing a red cloak, with his clothes rolled up, and led the people in two units of prayer facing the spear. I saw the people and animals passing in front of the spear. [Agreed upon]

Narrated by Al-Fadl ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him: The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, came to us while we were in a desert area, and Abbas was with him. He prayed in an open space without a Sutrah in front of him, and our donkey and a dog were playing in front of him, but he did not pay attention to it. [Narrated by Abu Dawud, and a similar narration is found in Al-Nasa’i]
Narrated by Nafi', from Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with him: The Prophet, peace be upon him, would place his riding animal in front of him and pray facing it. [Agreed upon by Al-Bukhari and Muslim]
Al-Bukhari added: I asked, "What if the riding animals became restless?" He replied, "He would take this saddle and adjust it, then pray facing its rear."
Narrated by Talha ibn Ubaidullah, may Allah be pleased with him: The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said, "When one of you places something like the back of a saddle in front of him, let him pray and not worry about whoever passes behind it." [Narrated by Muslim]
In a narration by Abu Dawud: "It suffices for him if they pass in front of him at a distance of a stone's throw." 1
Notes /
1 The statement: "At a distance of a stone's throw" – In An-Nihayah: The correct view is that if one prays with full humility, keeping their gaze fixed on the place of prostration during the standing position and not looking at those passing by, it is not disliked. This is the preferred opinion of Fakhr al-Islam. Ibn al-Humam favored what is mentioned in An-Nihayah without distinguishing between the mosque and an open space, as stated in Al-Mirqat.

Narrated by Abu Juhaifah, may Allah be pleased with him: The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said, "If the one who passes in front of a praying person knew what sin he incurs, it would be better for him to stand still for forty (units of time) than to pass in front of him." Abu an-Nadr said, "I do not know whether he said forty days, months, or years." [Agreed upon by Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

Narrated by Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him: The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said, "If one of you knew what sin he incurs by passing in front of his brother while he is praying, standing still for a hundred years would be better for him than taking that step." [Narrated by Ibn Majah]
Narrated by Ka'b al-Ahbar: "If the one who passes in front of a praying person knew what sin he incurs, it would be better for him to be swallowed by the earth than to pass in front of him." In another narration: "It would be easier for him." [Narrated by Malik]
Narrated by Abu Sa'id, may Allah be pleased with him: The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said, "Nothing invalidates the prayer. Repel (distractions) as much as you can, 1 for it is only Satan." [Narrated by Abu Dawud, and a similar narration is [Narrated by At-Tabarani]
Notes /
1 The statement: "Repel as much as you can" – In Sharh al-Munyah: "One should repel the passerby if they intend to pass in front of the place of prostration or between the worshipper and the Sutrah by gesturing or saying 'Subhanallah,' but not both together." Al-Qadi 'Iyad has conveyed the consensus that it is not permissible to engage in excessive actions to repel them, as mentioned in Al-Mirqat.

Narrated by Sa'id ibn al-Musayyab: Ali and Uthman, may Allah be pleased with them, said, "Nothing invalidates a Muslim's prayer. Repel (distractions) from it as much as you can." 2 [Narrated by At-Tahawi and Al-Bayhaqi]
Notes /
2 The statement: "Repel from it as much as you can" – Muhammad (Imam Malik) said in Al-Muwatta: "It is disliked for a person to pass in front of a praying person. If someone intends to pass in front of them, they should repel them as much as possible without fighting. If they fight, the disturbance caused by fighting during the prayer is worse than the passerby crossing in front of them. We do not know of anyone who reported fighting except what was narrated from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, and this is not the general practice. Rather, it is as I have described to you." End quote.
Narrated by Ali, may Allah be pleased with him: "A dog, a donkey, a woman, or any other animal does not invalidate a Muslim's prayer. Repel (distractions) as much as you can." [Narrated by At-Tahawi]
Our scholars said: The hadith about prayer being invalidated by the passing of a woman or others is abrogated by these hadiths and the upcoming narrations. Ibn al-Malik mentioned this, as clarified in Al-Hilyah. Imam As-Sarakhsi said: "The command to fight in the hadith, 'Let him fight, for it is Satan,' is abrogated. It is also interpreted as referring to the early period when actions during prayer were permissible."
Narrated by Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her: "The Prophet, peace be upon him, used to pray at night while I was lying in front of him, between him and the Qiblah, like a corpse." [Agreed upon by Al-Bukhari and Muslim]
Narrated by Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her: "I used to sleep in front of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, with my legs in the direction of the Qiblah. When he prostrated, he would nudge me, and I would draw my legs back. When he stood up, I would stretch them out again. The houses at that time had no lamps." [Agreed upon by Al-Bukhari and Muslim]
Narrated by Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him: "I came riding a donkey, and I had just reached the age of puberty. The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, was leading the people in prayer at Mina without a wall in front of him. I passed in front of part of the row, dismounted, let the donkey graze, and joined the row. No one objected to this." 1 [Agreed upon by Al-Bukhari and Muslim]
Notes /
1 The statement: "No one objected to this" – Ibn al-Malik said: "The purpose is to show that the passing of a donkey in front of someone praying does not invalidate the prayer," as mentioned in Al-Mirqat.

Narrated by Umm Salamah, may Allah be pleased with her: "The Prophet, peace be upon him, was praying in Umm Salamah's room when Abdullah or Umar ibn Abi Salamah passed in front of him. He gestured with his hand, and the child turned back. Then Zaynab bint Umm Salamah passed, and he gestured similarly, but she continued. After finishing the prayer, the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said, 'Women are more determined.'" [Narrated by Ibn Majah]
Narrated by Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him: The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said"When one of you prays, let him place something in front of him. If he cannot find anything, let him set up a stick. If he does not have a stick, let him draw a line. Then, whatever passes in front of him will not harm him." [Narrated by Abu Dawud and Ibn Majah]
Ibn Abidin said in Radd al-Muhtar: "Either placing something or drawing a line is sufficient, meaning the Sunnah is achieved through it. Placing something is recommended, as Al-Quduri narrated from Abu Yusuf. It is also said that it should be placed lengthwise, not widthwise, to resemble planting. Drawing a line is also recommended, as per the second narration from Muhammad, based on the hadith of Abu Dawud: 'If he does not have a stick, let him draw a line.' Although this hadith is weak, it is permissible to act upon it in matters of virtue. This is why Ibn al-Humam said: 'The Sunnah is more worthy of being followed, as it generally serves the purpose of focusing the mind by tying the imagination to it, so it does not wander.' This is mentioned in Al-Bahr and Sharh al-Munyah."
It is said in Al-Hilyah: "The weakening of this hadith may be countered by the fact that Ahmad, Ibn Hibban, and others authenticated it."
Narrated by Sahl ibn Abi Hathmah, may Allah be pleased with him: The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said, "When one of you prays facing a Sutrah (screen), let him stand close to it, so that Satan does not interrupt his prayer." [Narrated by Abu Dawud]
Narrated by Al-Miqdad ibn al-Aswad, may Allah be pleased with him: "I never saw the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, pray facing a stick, pillar, or tree without placing it to his right or left side. He did not face it directly." [Narrated by Abu Dawud]
Notes /
1 The statement: "And they were not commanded except..." indicates that prayer is also an act of worship, and worship requires complete sincerity to Allah. Sincerity cannot be achieved without intention, so it is necessary to have the intention for prayer. This is mentioned in Ta'liq I'la as-Sunan.
