Allah Almighty says:

"And they were not commanded except 1 to worship Allah, being sincere to Him in religion." (Quran 98:5)

"And your Lord glorify." (Quran 74:3)

"And mentions the name of his Lord and prays." (Quran 87:15)

"And stand before Allah in devotion." (Quran 2:238)

"So recite what is easy from the Quran." (Quran 73:20)

"And indeed, it is in the scriptures of the former peoples." (Quran 26:196)

"And bow down." (Quran 2:43)

"And establish prayer." (Quran 4:77)

"And prostrate." (Quran 2:43)

1 The statement: "And they were not commanded except..." indicates that prayer is also an act of worship, and worship requires complete sincerity to Allah. Sincerity cannot be achieved without intention, so it is necessary to have the intention for prayer. This is mentioned in Ta'liq I'la as-Sunan.

English

Narrated by Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him: A man entered the mosque and prayed while the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, was in a corner of the mosque. The man came and greeted him, but the Prophet said, "Go back and pray, for you have not prayed." The man returned and prayed, then came back and greeted him again. The Prophet said, "And upon you be peace. Go back and pray, for you have not prayed." On the third occasion, the man said, "Teach me." 1 The Prophet said, "When you stand for prayer, perform ablution properly, then face the Qiblah, say Takbir, and recite what is easy for you from the Quran. Then bow until you are at ease in your bowing, then rise until you are standing straight. Then prostrate until you are at ease in your prostration, then sit up until you are at ease in your sitting, then prostrate again until you are at ease in your prostration. Then rise and do the same in your entire prayer." [Narrated by Al-Bukhari, Al-Tirmidhi, Al-Nasa’i, and Abu Dawud added: "If you do this, your prayer will be complete. If you omit anything, you will have diminished your prayer."]

English

Narrated by Rifa'ah ibn Rafi', may Allah be pleased with him: A man came and prayed in the mosque, then greeted the Prophet, peace be upon him. The Prophet said, "Repeat your prayer, for you have not prayed." The man said, "Teach me, O Messenger of Allah, how to pray." The Prophet said, "When you face the Qiblah, say Takbir, then recite Umm al-Quran (Surah Al-Fatihah) and whatever Allah wills you to recite. When you bow, place your palms on your knees and make your bowing firm, straighten your back. When you rise, straighten your spine and raise your head until your bones return to their joints. When you prostrate, make your prostration firm. When you rise, sit on your left thigh. Do this in every Rak'ah and prostration until you are at ease." This is the wording in Al-Masabih.

Abu Dawud reported it with slight variation, and Al-Tirmidhi and Al-Nasa’i reported its meaning.

Narrated by Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him: The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, led us in the Dhuhr prayer. A man at the back of the rows performed the prayer incorrectly. When the Prophet finished, he called him and said, "O so-and-so, do you not fear Allah? Do you not see how you pray? Narrated by Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her: "The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, would begin the prayer with the Takbir and recite Alhamdulillahi Rabbil-'Alamin (Surah Al-Fatihah). When he bowed, he would neither raise his head too high nor lower it too much, but kept it balanced. When he raised his head from bowing, he would not prostrate until he stood straight. When he raised his head from prostration, he would not prostrate again until he sat upright. He would say the Tashahhud after every two Rak'ahs. He would lay his left foot flat and raise his right foot. He forbade sitting like the devil and spreading one's arms like a beast. He would conclude the prayer with the Taslim." [Narrated by Muslim]

English

Narrated by Abdullah ibn Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him: "Shall I not inform you about the prayer of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him?" He then stood and raised his hands only once at the beginning and did not raise them again. In another narration: "He did not raise them afterward." [Narrated by Al-Nasa’i]

The scholar Al-Hashim al-Madani said in Kashf ar-Rayn regarding the issue of raising hands: "The chain of Al-Nasa’i meets the conditions of Al-Bukhari and Muslim."

English

Narrated by Jabir ibn Samurah, may Allah be pleased with him: "The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, came out to us and said, 'Why do I see you raising your hands like the tails of restless horses? Be calm in prayer.'" [Narrated by Muslim]

In the Musnad of our Imam Abu Hanifah, it is narrated from Sufyan ibn Uyaynah: "Abu Hanifah and Al-Awza'i met in the house of Al-Khannatin in Makkah. Al-Awza'i said to Abu Hanifah, 'Why do you not raise your hands during prayer when bowing and when rising from it?' Abu Hanifah replied, 'Because nothing authentic has been established from the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, regarding it.'

Al-Awza'i said, 'How can it not be authentic when Az-Zuhri narrated to me from Salim, from his father, that the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, used to raise his hands when starting the prayer, when bowing, and when rising from it?' Abu Hanifah replied, 'Hammad narrated to us from Ibrahim, from Alqamah and Al-Aswad, from Ibn Mas'ud, that the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, did not raise his hands except at the beginning of the prayer and did not repeat it.'

Al-Awza'i said, 'I narrate to you from Az-Zuhri, from Salim, from his father, and you say Hammad narrated to you from Ibrahim?' Abu Hanifah replied, 'Hammad was more knowledgeable than Az-Zuhri, Ibrahim was more knowledgeable than Salim, and Alqamah was not inferior to Ibn Umar in knowledge, even though Ibn Umar had the privilege of companionship. Al-Aswad also had great merit, and Abdullah (Ibn Mas'ud) is Abdullah.' Al-Awza'i remained silent."

English

Narrated by Mujahid: "I prayed behind Ibn Umar, and he did not raise his hands except during the first Takbir of the prayer." [Narrated by At-Tahawi]

At-Tahawi said: "Ibn Umar saw the Prophet, peace be upon him, raise his hands, but he later stopped doing so. This indicates that he must have known that the practice had been abrogated, and the evidence for that became clear to him."

The scholar Al-Ayni said: "The evidence used by the opponents regarding raising the hands is interpreted as being from the early days of Islam, which was later abrogated. The proof for this is that Abdullah ibn Az-Zubayr saw a man raising his hands during prayer when bowing and rising, and he said to him, 'Do not do this, for the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, did it and then abandoned it.'"

English

Narrated by Asim ibn Kulaib al-Jarmi, from his father, who was among the companions of Ali, may Allah be pleased with him: "Ali ibn Abi Talib, may Allah honor his face, used to raise his hands during the first Takbir with which he began the prayer, and he did not raise them again during the rest of the prayer." [Narrated by Muhammad, At-Tahawi, and Ibn Abi Shaybah]

The scholar Al-Ayni said: "Its chain is authentic according to the conditions of Muslim. It is not permissible for Ali to have seen the Prophet, peace be upon him, do something and then abandon it unless the raising of hands outside the opening Takbir had been abrogated."

English

And from Sahl ibn Sa’d, who said: The people were commanded that a man should place his right hand over his left forearm in prayer. [Narrated by Al-Bukhari]

In a narration by Al-Nasa’i, from Wa’il ibn Hujr, who said: I said to myself, “I will observe the prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to see how he prays.” So I observed him. He stood, said the Takbir, and raised his hands until they were level with his ears. Then he placed his right hand over the back of his left hand, wrist, and forearm.

Our scholars said: The Sunnah is to combine placing and grasping, reconciling what has been mentioned in the narrations. In some narrations, there is mention of grasping, in others, placing one hand over the other, and in others, placing the hand on the forearm. The method of reconciliation is to place the right palm over the left palm, form a circle with the thumb and little finger around the wrist, and extend the remaining three fingers over the forearm. This fulfills the descriptions of placing the hand over the hand, over the forearm, and grasping the left hand with the right hand.

The foundational principle is that whenever it is possible to reconcile two seemingly contradictory matters, one should not abandon either of them. This is mentioned in Al-Halbi and Al-Muhtar.

Al-Qasim ibn Mukhaymirah reported: Alqamah took my hand and narrated to me that Abdullah ibn Mas'ud took his hand, and the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) took Abdullah's hand and taught him the Tashahhud in prayer. He mentioned something similar to the supplication in the hadith of Al-A'mash: "When you say this or complete this, you have completed your prayer. If you wish to stand, then stand, and if you wish to sit, then sit." [Narrated by Abu Dawud and At-Tahawi and Ahmad and Al-Daraqutni also narrated something similar]

Abdullah ibn Umar reported: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "When a person praying raises his head at the end of his prayer and completes the Tashahhud, then if he breaks his ablution, his prayer is complete, and he should not repeat it." [Narrated by At-Tahawi while Abu Dawud, Al-Tirmidhi, Al-Daraqutni, and Al-Bayhaqi also narrated something similar from Ibn Umar and Ali, both Marfu' and Mawquf]

Abu Dawud remained silent about this hadith, and when he remained silent about a hadith, it was considered Hasan or Sahih according to him. Al-Tirmidhi said, "Everything I have mentioned in my book is evidence except for four hadiths," and this hadith is not among them, as mentioned in As-Sa'ayah.

Al-Fadl ibn Abbas reported: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said"Prayer is performed in sets of two rak'ahs. You perform the Tashahhud in every two rak'ahs, showing humility, supplication, and submission. Then you raise your hands, meaning you lift them towards your Lord, with their palms facing your face, and say, 'O Lord, O Lord.' Whoever does not do this, his prayer is such and such." In another narration, it says"His prayer is deficient." [Narrated by Al-Tirmidhi]

Ali Al-Qari said: The apparent meaning of the hadith is that the minimum of prayer is two rak'ahs, and it indicates the prohibition of Al-Butayra', as is our school's opinion.
