Love in Allah and from Allah

English

1 His saying "love in Allah and from Allah": he said in al-Mirqat: "in" is causal and "from" is of origin, and the meaning is: the servant's love of the servant for the sake of the good pleasure of the Lord, which comes from Allah to the servant; and the second is the fruit of the first.

English notes

1 His statement: “Keep to the assemblies of those who remember”: Assemblies of remembrance include scholars’ gatherings, preachers’ sessions, and saints’ where assemblies are filled with Allah’s remembrance and related knowledge of true beliefs, religious laws of bodily and financial worship, halal and haram, encouragement and warning, and the like. English notes

1 His statement: “Allah loves you as you love him in Him”: An-Nawawi said: It extols love in Allah, causing Allah’s love, and the virtue of visiting the righteous. Humans may see angels. I say: Non-prophets and messengers from believers seeing angels in human form is clear, established in Gabriel’s Hadith and others. This is saints’ specifics after prophethood’s seal, verifying no sending angels to saints addressing them conveying aims beyond inspiration level. Allah, Exalted is He, knows best. [As stated in Al-Mirqat]

In At-Tirmidhi’s narration: “A person is with whom he loves, and for him what he earned 1.”

Notes /
English notes

1 His statement: “what he earned”: Both wordings are close in intended meaning. [As stated in Al-Mirqat]

1 His statement: “You are with whom you love”: Here, companionship is special, involving meeting between lover and beloved, not same rank, self-evident invalidity. The meeting’s manner: higher descend to lower, gathering in gardens, recalling Allah’s blessings, praising Him; higher ranks’ people serve them with desires and calls. They are in a garden delighting and enjoying. This companionship, meeting, and fellowship differs with treatment’s goodness. [As stated in Al-Mirqat]

English

Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “A person 1 follows his close friend’s religion, so let each of you see whom he befriends.” [Narrated by Ahmad, At-Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud, and Al-Bayhaqi in Shu’ab Al-Iman] At-Tirmidhi said: This Hadith is hasan gharib. An-Nawawi said: Its chain is authentic.

Notes /
English notes

1 His statement: “A person follows his close friend’s religion”: Al-Ghazali said: Associating with the greedy stirs greed; with the ascetic fosters worldly renunciation; natures are inclined to imitation and following, natures steal from natures unknowingly. [As stated in Al-Mirqat]

Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “The example 1 of a good companion and a bad one is like a musk carrier and a bellows blower. The musk carrier either gives you some, you buy from him, or you find a good scent from him. The bellows blower either burns your clothes or you find a bad smell from him.” [Agreed Upon]

Notes /
English notes

1 His statement: “The example of a good companion and a bad one…”: It guides to desire companionship and sitting with the righteous and scholars, benefiting in this world and Hereafter, and avoiding companionship of the wicked and sinners, harming religion and world. Associating with the good brings good; with the bad brings evil, like wind carrying sweet scent from perfume or foul from foul. [As stated in Al-Mirqat]
