Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Nothing repels decree except supplication, nothing increases lifespan except righteousness, and a man 1 is deprived of provision due to a sin he commits.” [Narrated by Ibn Majah]

Notes /
English notes

1 His statement: “a man is deprived of provision due to a sin he commits”: Al-Mudhir said it has two meanings: one, provision means reward in the Hereafter; second, worldly provision like wealth, health, and well-being. On the second, there is an issue as we see disbelievers and sinners with more wealth and health than the righteous. The answer is that the Hadith is specific to Muslims whom Allah intends to raise their rank in the Hereafter, punishing them for their sin in this world. [As stated in Al-Mirqat]

Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: A man said, “O Messenger of Allah, who is most deserving of my good companionship?” He said: “Your mother.” He said: “Then who?” He said: “Then your mother.” He said: “Then who?” He said: “Then your mother.” He said: “Then who? 1” He said: “Then your father.”

In another narration: He said: “Your mother, then your mother, then your mother, then your father, then the nearest and the nearest.” [Agreed Upon]

Notes /
English notes

1 His statement: “Then who?” He said: “Then your father”: In Umdat al-Qari, it is said: Al-Muhasibi claimed that preferring the mother over the father in righteousness and obedience is the consensus of scholars. In Al-Alamgiriyyah, it is said: If observing the rights of both parents is impossible, as one is harmed by observing the other’s, prioritize the father in respect and honor, and the mother in service and benevolence. From Ala al-A’immah Al-Hamami, our scholars said: The father takes precedence in respect, the mother in service; if they enter his house, he stands for the father; if they ask for water and neither can take from his hand, start with the mother. [As stated in Al-Qunyah]

Abdullah ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated: A man came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said, “O Messenger of Allah, I have committed a great sin; is 1 there repentance for me?” He said: “Do you have a mother?” He said: “No.” He said: “Do you have an aunt?” He said: “Yes.” He said: “Then treat her with righteousness.” [Narrated by At-Tirmidhi]

Notes /
English notes

1 His statement: “is there repentance for me?”: In Al-Kawkab ad-Durri, it is said: There is a famous question about accepting repentance for great sins. It is well-known that verbal repentance, easy in their view, does not expiate great sins. This is supported by the story of Ma’iz and the Aslamiyyah woman, who did not see repentance as expiating for them until they said, “Purify us,” though purity had occurred through remorse for what they committed against Allah. Knowing this, the man’s sin was forgiven through his remorse, but he did not see this remorse, without hardship, as expiating, so the Prophet (ﷺ) commanded kindness to the aunt not to remove the sin, as it was removed, but to instill tranquility in his heart. Also, some narrations state that after a sin and remorse, one should follow with a good deed to repair the inner corruption from the sin. Repentance erases the sin but does not provide this light and joy removed by the sin’s evil. Perhaps his sin was severing ties, so it was fitting to replace it with connection. Do not overlook that the sin was against Allah’s rights, not servants’, where forgiveness requires the right-holder’s pardon. Yet, ties of kinship and the like related to servants are not free from disobeying Allah, so repentance was needed to lift this sin, and kindness to the aunt remained pure virtue.

1 His statement: “Such is righteousness”: Al-Tayyibi said: This refers to what preceded, addressed to the companions. He saw this vision and recounted it to his companions; when he reached “Harithah ibn An-Nu’man,” he alerted them to the reason for attaining that rank, saying: “Such is righteousness,” meaning such a rank is attained through righteousness. Abdullah ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “While three people were walking, rain caught them, so they sought shelter in a mountain cave. A rock from the mountain fell over the cave’s mouth, sealing them in. Some said to others: ‘Look for righteous deeds you did for Allah and supplicate with them; perhaps He will remove it.’ One said: ‘O Allah, I had elderly parents and young children; I pastured for them. When I returned and milked, I started with my parents before my children. One day the pasture was far, and I did not return until evening; I found them asleep. I milked as usual, brought the milk, and stood at their heads, hating to wake them or start with the children before them, while the children cried at my feet. This continued until dawn. If You know I did that seeking Your Face, open a gap for us to see the sky.’ Allah opened a gap so they saw the sky.

The second said: ‘O Allah, I had a cousin I loved as men love women most. I sought her, but she refused until I brought her a hundred dinars. I worked until I gathered them and met her with it. When I was between her legs, she said: ‘O servant of Allah, fear Allah and do not break the seal unlawfully.’ I left her. O Allah, if You know I did that seeking Your Face, open a gap for us.’ He opened a gap for them.

The third said: ‘O Allah, I hired a worker for a measure of rice. When he finished, he said: “Give me my right,” but I offered him his right, and he left it and turned away. I continued planting it until I gathered cows and their herder from it. He came and said: ‘Fear Allah and do not oppress me; give me my right.’ I said: ‘Go to those cows and their herder.’ He said: ‘Fear Allah and do not mock me.’ I said: ‘I am not mocking you; take those cows and their herder.’ He took them and left. If You know I did that seeking Your Face, open what remains.’ Allah opened for them.” [Agreed Upon]

English notes

1 His statement: “I continued planting it until I gathered cows and their herder from it…”: Imam Abu Hanifah, his two companions, and others who permit selling another’s property and disposing of it without permission if the owner approves later, held this. They said: This permits a meddler’s disposal of another’s property for advice, trust, and compassion, as he approved it for him. [As stated in Al-Mirqat]

2 His statement: “Allah opened for them”: An-Nawawi said: This proves it is recommended to supplicate in distress, for rain, and otherwise, seeking intercession with righteous deeds, as they did and were answered, and the Prophet (ﷺ) mentioned it praising them and their virtues. It extols kindness to parents and preferring them over others in the family, abstaining from prohibitions especially after capability, and affirms saints’ miracles, the view of the people of truth.

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Whoever loves 1 for his provision to be expanded and his trace prolonged, let him maintain ties of kinship.” [Agreed Upon]

One: Increase through blessing in lifespan by success in obedience, filling time with what benefits in the Hereafter, protecting from waste, etc.

Second: Relative to what appears to angels in the Preserved Tablet; it shows sixty years unless he maintains ties, then forty more. Allah knows what will occur. Relative to Allah’s knowledge and predestination, no increase, impossible; relative to what appears to creation, increase is conceivable, the Hadith’s intent.

Third: Meaning enduring good remembrance after him, as if he did not die, a weak view. The author of Al-Fa’iq said: Allah preserves the trace of one maintaining ties long in the world, not fading quickly like the severer’s. [Extracted from Al-Mirqat]

Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Learn 1 of your lineages what enables maintaining ties of kinship; maintaining ties brings love in family, abundance in wealth, and extension in trace.” [Narrated by At-Tirmidhi]

Notes /
English notes

1 His statement: “Learn of your lineages what enables maintaining ties of kinship”: meaning, know your relatives with ties to enable maintaining them, approaching, compassion, and benevolence. It indicates maintaining applies to all kin, not just parents, as some held. [As stated in Al-Mirqat] In commentaries on Al-Kanz: We require expenditure for kin with prohibited ties, even non-descendants like siblings and children, uncles, aunts, maternal uncles and aunts if poor and disabled, proportionate to inheritance; for Allah said: And upon the heir is [a provision] like that [Al-Baqarah: 233]. Specifying the heir alerts to proportion. As the ruling derives from a derived name, the derivation’s basis is the cause, so inheritance causes entitlement to expenditure, proportionate to it. In Ibn Mas’ud’s reading: “And upon the heir with prohibited kin ties,” famous, permissible to qualify by it. The judge compels it, as it is a due right. Ash-Shafi’i said: Expenditure only for descendants, no partiality between them like paternal cousins. This is Malik’s view. Ahmad said: For relatives who inherit.
