Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was asked, “Who is the noblest of people?” He said: “The noblest of them 1 with Allah is the most God-conscious.” They said, “That is not what we are asking about.” He said: “Then the noblest of people is Joseph, the prophet of Allah, son of the prophet of Allah, son of the prophet of Allah, son of the friend of Allah.” They said, “That is not what we are asking about.” He said: “Are you asking about the origins of the Arabs?” They said, “Yes.” He said: “The best of you in the pre-Islamic era are the best of you in Islam, if they attain understanding.” [Agreed Upon]

In a narration by Bukhari from Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both): The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “The noble is the son of the noble, son of the noble, son of the noble: Joseph, son of Jacob, son of Isaac, son of Abraham.”

Notes /
English notes

1 His statement: “The noblest of them with Allah is the most God-conscious…”: Since they asked generally, and it was appropriate to direct it to the most perfect individual and superior quality, he said: “The noblest of them with Allah is the most God-conscious.” When it became clear they were not asking about absolute nobility, and he thought they meant combining lineage and status, he said: “Then the noblest of people is Joseph, the prophet of Allah…” His statement: “if they attain understanding” means knowledge coupled with action. In Sharh As-Sunnah, it is said: He means that one with merit and honor in pre-Islam, if he embraces Islam and attains understanding, combines that with religious benefit. One who does not embrace Islam destroys his honor and wastes his lineage. [Extracted from Al-Mirqat]

1 His statement: “Status is wealth…”: The commentator said: Status is what one counts as the glories of his ancestors, and nobility is the opposite of baseness. It means that what makes a man great in people’s eyes is wealth, and what makes him great with Allah is God-consciousness. Boasting about ancestors is neither. [As stated in Al-Mirqat]

“I am the Prophet, no lie… I am 1 the son of Abdul-Muttalib.”

He said: No one among the people that day was fiercer than him. [Agreed Upon]

Notes /
English notes

1 His statement: “I am the son of Abdul-Muttalib”: Al-Kirmani said: If you ask how he said this when boasting about ancestors is prohibited, I say: It can be interpreted as referring to a vision Abdul-Muttalib saw, which he told Quraysh about, interpreted as him having a son who would lead people and destroy enemies through him, famous among them. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) reminded them of that vision to strengthen those who had fled among his companions, so they would return confident of ultimate victory. Another view is that prohibited boasting is outside jihad against disbelievers, as the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) permitted arrogance in war while prohibiting it elsewhere. In Al-Mirqat, it is said: In summary, boasting is of two types: blameworthy and praiseworthy. The blameworthy is the pre-Islamic type of boasting about ancestors and lineages for fame and show. The praiseworthy combines lineage with religious status, not for show, but to manifest Allah’s blessings.

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: A man came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said, “You are the best of creation.” The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “That 1 is Abraham.” [Narrated by Muslim] An-Nawawi said: The Prophet (ﷺ) said this before knowing he was the master of Adam’s children.

Notes /
English notes

1 His statement: “That is Abraham”: An-Nawawi said: There are interpretations. One: He said this humbly and respectfully toward Abraham, due to his friendship and fatherhood; otherwise, our Prophet is as he said: “I am the master of Adam’s children, no boast.” Second: He said this before knowing he was the master of Adam’s children, as virtues are granted by Allah to whom He wills, so he informed of Abraham’s virtue until he knew his own superiority and informed of it. Third: It means he is the best of his era’s creation, using an expression implying generality for greater humility. I say: It permits differentiation among prophets (peace be upon them). I say: There is no indication of that in any of the three interpretations. Our Prophet’s superiority is established by authentic, explicit proofs nearly definitive or consensual, including Muslim and Abu Dawud’s Hadith: “I am the master of Adam’s children on the Day of Resurrection, the first whose grave splits, the first intercessor, and the first accepted.” And Ahmad, At-Tirmidhi, and Ibn Majah from Abu Sa’id: “I am the master of Adam’s children on the Day of Resurrection, no boast; in my hand is the banner of praise, no boast; no prophet that day, Adam or otherwise, but under my banner; I am the first the earth splits for, no boast; I am the first intercessor and accepted, no boast.” And At-Tirmidhi from Abu Hurairah: “I am the first the earth splits for, clothed in a garment from Paradise’s garments, then I stand at the Throne’s right, a position no creature stands but me.” And the like, indicating his mastery and greater felicity. It seems apparent that “I am the master of Adam’s children” came after “That is Abraham,” as the qualities on the Day of Resurrection cannot be in an inferior. Abrogation does not apply to reports. Some of our scholars’ commentators said: Interpret the Hadith as humility to align with Hadiths of his superiority over all humanity, and that Abraham is called by this title as a proper name like “the Friend,” so he said: “That is Abraham,” meaning the one called by this name is Abraham, to honor him without sharing. Thus, “best of creation” refers to the created excluding the uncreated, not generally including the Prophet. He is excluded either narratively, as mentioned, or rationally, as the speaker is not included in his command or report per some principles. Allah knows best. [As stated in Al-Mirqat]

At-Tawrabushti said: The people addressed him as they addressed tribal leaders, using similar speech, but he disliked it, as his right was to be addressed as the Prophet and Messenger, a rank beyond any human.

Notes /
English notes

1 His statement: “The Master is Allah”: In Al-Mirqat, it is said: This magnifies his Lord and humbles himself, directing the matter to reality, observing Shariah and spiritual etiquettes, meaning the one who controls creatures’ affairs, nurtures, and governs them is Allah, Exalted is He. This does not contradict his metaphorical, relative mastery specific to humans, as he said: “I am the master of Adam’s children, no boast,” meaning not boasting but recounting Allah’s blessing and informing as commanded. Otherwise, Bukhari narrated from Jabir that Umar said: “Abu Bakr is our master and freed our master,” meaning Bilal. Relative to Bilal, it is humility. Allah knows best.
