English

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: There is no omen, and the best of it is optimism. They said: What is optimism? He said: A good word one of you 1 hears [Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim].

Notes /
English notes

1 The statement: "A good word one of you hears": Meaning with the intention of optimism, like a seeker of something lost saying, "O Finder!" or a merchant saying, "O Provider!" or a traveler saying, "O Safe One!" or one going for a need saying, "O Successful!" or a warrior saying, "Victorious!" or a pilgrim saying, "O Accepted!" and similar expressions. The permission for optimism and prohibition of omens mean that if a person sees something they consider good and it encourages them to pursue their goal, they may act on it. But if they see something they deem inauspicious that prevents them from proceeding, it is not permissible to accept it; rather, they should continue. If they accept it and stop pursuing their goal, that is an omen, as it is specifically tied to pessimism. Thus, in Umdat al-Qari and Al-Mirqat.

Buraydah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Prophet (ﷺ) did not take omens from anything. When he sent an agent, he asked about their name. If he liked the name, he was pleased, and joy was seen on his face. If he disliked the name, displeasure was seen on his face. When he entered a village, he asked about its name. If he liked its name 1, he was pleased, and joy was seen on his face. If he disliked its name, displeasure was seen on his face [Narrated by Abu Dawud].

Notes /
English notes

1 The statement: "If he disliked the name": Ibn al-Malik said: The Sunnah is to choose good names for one’s children or servants, as disliked names may align with fate. For example, naming someone "Loss" (Khasar) might lead to loss for that person or their child, causing some to believe it is due to the name, leading to pessimism and avoidance of their company. The hadith does not indicate the Prophet took omens from bad names; the compiler relied on its implication to negate omens entirely. Cited from Al-Mirqat.

2 The statement: "Taking omens is polytheism": Because they believed omens brought benefit or repelled harm. Acting on them is as if they associated partners with Allah, called minor polytheism. A commentator said: It means whoever believes something other than Allah independently benefits or harms has committed clear polytheism. Thus, in Al-Mirqat.

Notes /
English notes

1 The statement: "Divination": Divination (iyafah) is interpreting birds or signs, like taking an eagle as a sign of punishment, a crow as estrangement, or a hoopoe as guidance. Some say divination is geomancy (lines in the sand). Omens are pessimism from things, and geomancy (tarq) is striking pebbles, done by women, or lines in the sand. These are forms of soothsaying that deterred people from their goals. The Shariah negated, abolished, and prohibited them, stating they have no effect in bringing benefit or repelling harm, and they are from the work of jibt, i.e., Satan. Cited from Al-Mirqat.

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: There is no contagion 1, no omens, no owl 2, no Safar,3 and flee from a leper4 as you flee from a lion [Narrated by Bukhari].

In Muslim’s narration from Amr bin Ash-Sharid, from his father: A leper was in the Thaqif delegation. The Prophet (ﷺ) sent to him: We have accepted your pledge, so return.

In Ibn Majah’s narration from Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) took a leper’s hand, placed it in the dish with his, and said: Eat with trust in Allah and reliance on Him.

Bukhari narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: There is no contagion, no omens, no owl, no Safar. A Bedouin said: O Messenger of Allah, what about camels in the desert, like gazelles, but a mangy camel mixes with them and infects them? The Prophet (ﷺ) said: Who infected the first?

In Al-Musawwa: I believe nothing affects existence except Allah’s necessary power alone. However, the world has causes and effects by customary decree, governing rulings like retribution and compensation. Some causes are clear, like striking with a sword for death or prolonged fasting causing death, and some are subtle, like disease transmission. The Shariah negates subtle causes in that no ruling is based on them, and one should not blame another for transmitting disease. Arabs may negate something absolutely while meaning it in a specific context.

Notes /
English notes

1 The statement: "No contagion": Al-Turbashti said: Contagion here is the transfer of illness from one to another, as physicians claim for seven diseases: leprosy, scabies, smallpox, measles, bad breath, conjunctivitis, and epidemics. Scholars differ on its interpretation. Most say the hadith negates and abolishes it, supported by its apparent meaning and related narrations. Others say it does not abolish contagion, as the Prophet (ﷺ) said: Flee from a leper as from a lion, and: Let not a sick one approach a healthy one. He meant to negate the naturalists’ belief that contagious diseases inevitably affect. He clarified with “Who infected the first?” that it depends on Allah’s will. The command to flee a leper or avoid sick-to-healthy contact indicates caution, like avoiding a leaning wall or faulty ship. The first group counters that these narrations show compassion to prevent harm or blame for disease transmission. I say: Al-Asqalani chose this in Sharh An-Nukhba, and we elaborated in Sharh Ash-Sharh. The Prophet’s avoidance of the leper during pledging, despite his prophetic status, suggests avoiding suspicion of contagion, as commanding avoidance implies its natural effect. The second view is preferable, reconciling the hadiths and preserving medical principles, which the Shariah affirms, as explained. The prohibition combines the forbidden, disliked, and cautioned for various reasons. The hadith to the leper: “We have accepted your pledge, return,” and taking a leper’s hand to eat, saying: Eat with trust and reliance, reconcile caution against harm and reliance on Allah, a profound balance. Allah grants success.

2 The statement: "No owl": The owl (hamah) is a bird people took as an ill omen, a large bird with weak daytime vision, flying at night, making sounds, and dwelling in ruins, also called a boom. Thus, in Al-Mirqat.

3 The statement: "No Safar": Abu Dawud said in his Sunan: Baqiyyah asked Muhammad bin Rashid about it, who said: They took Safar’s entry as inauspicious, so the Prophet (ﷺ) said: No Safar. The Judge said: It may negate the belief that Safar brings calamities. Cited from Al-Mirqat. In Al-Alamgiriyyah: I asked about people avoiding travel or starting actions like marriage in Safar, citing: Whoever informs me of Safar’s end, I promise them Paradise. Is this authentic, and is Safar inauspicious? They also avoid sewing or cutting clothes when the moon is in Scorpio or Leo. Is this valid? He said: Safar’s inauspiciousness is an Arab belief. Claims about the moon in Scorpio or Leo are astrologers’ fabrications attributed to the Prophet, pure lies. Cited from Jawahir al-Fatawa.

4 The statement: "Flee from a leper": This is a concession for the weak, while avoiding it is permissible for the strong, as leprosy is contagious by Allah’s permission, causing harm. “No contagion” negates the belief that disease spreads by its nature, not Allah’s act. Thus, in Al-Mirqat.

English notes

1 The statement: "No star": Naw (star) refers to a star’s rising or setting, one in the east, another in the west. They believed it inevitably brought rain or wind, attributing it to the star. The Prophet (ﷺ) negated this. He was stern about stars because Arabs attributed rain to them. If someone says, “We were rained on by such a star,” meaning at such a time, it is permissible, as Allah customarily brings rain then, per Al-Tayyibi. The apparent meaning is to prohibit it entirely to prevent corrupt beliefs. Say: We were rained on by Allah’s favor. Cited from Al-Mirqat.

Some say this is plausible as a prophetic distinction, like preventing jinn from eavesdropping with shooting stars.

Sa’d bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: There is no owl, no contagion, no omens, and if omens exist in anything, it is in a house, horse, or woman [Narrated by Abu Dawud].

Al-Tahawi narrated: Sa’id bin Al-Musayyib said: I asked Sa’d about omens, and he rebuked me, saying: I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: There is no omen, and if it exists in anything, it is in a woman, house, or horse.

In Sharh Ma’ani al-Athar: Sa’d rebuked Sa’id for mentioning omens and reported the Prophet’s saying: There is no omen, then said: If it exists in anything, it is in a woman, horse, or house, meaning if it were to exist, it would be in these, but since it is not in these three, it is in nothing. Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) reported that the Prophet’s words differed, as Abu Hassan said: Two men from Banu Amir told Aisha that Abu Hurayrah narrated the Prophet said: Omens are from a house, woman, or horse. She was furious, saying: By the One who revealed the Furqan to Muhammad, he never said that. He said: The people of Jahiliyyah took omens from them. Aisha clarified it was a report about Jahiliyyah beliefs.

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: A man said: O Messenger of Allah, we were in a house where our numbers and wealth were many, then moved to a house where our numbers and wealth decreased. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: Leave it, it is bad [Narrated by Abu Dawud].

In another narration by Yahya bin Abdullah bin Bahir: Farwah bin Musayk said: I said: O Messenger of Allah, we have a land called Abyan, our fertile land and provision, but its air is harmful. He said: Leave it, for from pestilence comes destruction.

Ali Al-Qari said: This is not about contagion or omens but medicine, as pure air greatly aids health, and corrupt air quickly causes illness.
