English

Mu’awiyah bin Al-Hakam (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: I said: O Messenger of Allah, we did things in Jahiliyyah, like visiting soothsayers. He said: Do not visit soothsayers. 1 I said: We took omens. He said: That is something one of you feels, but let it not deter you. I said: Some men draw lines. 2 He said: A prophet among the prophets drew lines; whoever matches his drawing, that is it [Narrated by Muslim].

Notes /
English notes

1 The statement: "Do not visit soothsayers": In Al-Durr al-Mukhtar: Knowledge is obligatory for one’s religion, communal for others’ benefit, recommended for deep jurisprudence or heart knowledge, and forbidden for philosophy, trickery, astrology, geomancy, natural sciences, magic, and soothsaying. In Radd al-Muhtar: Soothsaying is claiming knowledge of future events or secrets. In Nihayat al-Hadith: Arabs had soothsayers like Shiqq and Satih. Some claimed a familiar spirit gave them news, others inferred from signs, words, or actions, called arraf (diviners), like those claiming knowledge of stolen items. The hadith “Whoever visits a soothsayer” includes diviners and astrologers, as Arabs called anyone with subtle knowledge a soothsayer.

2 The statement: "Draw lines": This is geomancy, a science of shapes, lines, and dots with known rules, forming letters and sentences indicating outcomes. It is absolutely forbidden, attributed to Idris (peace be upon him), a repealed law. In Fatawa Ibn Hajar: Learning or teaching it is strictly forbidden, as it misleads people to believe the practitioner shares Allah’s knowledge of the unseen. Thus, in Radd al-Muhtar.

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Prophet (ﷺ) said: When Allah decrees a matter in the heavens, the angels beat their wings in submission to His word, like chains on smooth rock. When fear is lifted from their hearts, they say: What did your Lord say? Those who spoke say: The truth, and He is the Most High, the Great. Eavesdroppers hear it, stacked one above another, Sufyan gestured with his hand, spreading his fingers, one hears a word and passes it to the one below, until it reaches the tongue of a sorcerer or soothsayer. Sometimes a meteor catches them before they pass it; sometimes they pass it before being caught. They mix in a hundred lies, so it is said: Didn’t they tell us such-and-such on such a day? They are believed because of the word heard from the heavens [Narrated by Bukhari].

Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated: A man from the Prophet’s companions among the Ansar said: While we were sitting one night with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), a star shot and lit up. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: What did you say in Jahiliyyah when such a thing was seen? They said: Allah and His Messenger know best; we said a great man was born or died tonight. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: It is not cast for anyone’s death or life, but when our Lord, blessed be His name, decrees a matter, the Throne-bearers glorify, then the heavens’ dwellers below them glorify, until it reaches this lowest heaven. Those below the Throne-bearers ask: What did your Lord say? They tell them, and the heavens’ dwellers ask each other until it reaches the lowest heaven. The jinn snatch the word and throw it to their allies, who are struck. What they bring accurately is true, but they distort and add to it [Narrated by Muslim].

Notes /
English notes

1 The statement: "Whoever acquires knowledge from the stars": This is deducing earthly events from celestial configurations. In Mukhtarat An-Nawazil by the author of Al-Hidayah: Astronomy is good and not blameworthy, divided into mathematical, which is true, as the Quran says: “The sun and moon move by precise calculation” (Ar-Rahman 55:5), and inferential, deducing events by Allah’s decree through star movements, permissible like a doctor deducing health from a pulse. If one denies Allah’s decree or claims independent knowledge of the unseen, they disbelieve. Learning enough for prayer times and Qiblah is fine. Beyond that is problematic, as stated in Al-Fusul as forbidden, followed by the commentator. It refers to the inferential type, not mathematical. In Al-Ihya: Astronomy is not blameworthy in itself, but forbidden in Shariah for three reasons: it misleads people to believe stars cause effects, its judgments are mere guesses (once a miracle of Idris, now obsolete), and it is useless since decreed events are inevitable. Summarized from Radd al-Muhtar.

Qatadah narrated: Allah created the stars for three purposes: as adornment for the heavens, missiles for devils, and signs for guidance. Whoever interprets them otherwise errs, wastes their share, and takes on what they do not know [Narrated by Bukhari, as a comment].

In Razin’s narration: They take on what does not concern them, what they have no knowledge of, and what prophets and angels could not know. Ar-Rabi’ said similarly, adding: Allah did not place anyone’s life, sustenance, or death in a star; they fabricate lies against Allah and rely on stars.

Those who said: We were rained on by Allah’s favor and mercy, believe in Me and disbelieve in the star. Those who said: We were rained on by such a star, disbelieve in Me and believe in the star 1 [Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim].

Notes /
English notes

1 The statement: "Disbelieve in Me and believe in the star": Al-Nawawi said: Scholars differ on the disbelief of saying, “We were rained on by such a star,” with two views. First, it negates faith entirely, with two interpretations: if one believes the star independently causes rain, as Jahiliyyah people did, their disbelief is clear, per Al-Shafi’i and the majority. If one believes it is from Allah’s favor, with the star as a sign or likely time for rain, they are not disbelieved, as it means rain came at such a time. The apparent view is that it is disliked (tanzih) because it is ambiguous, resembling Jahiliyyah phrases, leading to suspicion. The second view is ingratitude for Allah’s favor by attributing rain to the star. Thus, in Al-Mirqat. In Al-Alamgiriyyah: It is disliked to say: We were watered by Pleiades’ star, or Suhail rose, so the night cooled, as Suhail does not bring heat or cold.
