Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: The stomach is the reservoir of the body, and the veins draw from it. If the stomach is healthy, the veins distribute health; if it is corrupted, the veins distribute illness [Narrated by Al-Bayhaqi in Shu’ab al-Iman].

Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: Allah has not sent down a disease except that He 1 has sent down its cure [Narrated by Bukhari].

Notes / الحواشي
English notes

1 The statement: "except that He has sent down its cure": If you say: We see many sick people treated who do not recover. I say: This is due to ignorance of proper treatment or diagnosis of the disease, not the absence of a cure. Thus, Al-Nawawi said.

الحواشي

2 The statement: "heals by Allah’s permission": In Al-Alamgiriyyah: There is no issue with seeking treatment if one believes Allah is the Healer and the medicine is a means. If one believes the medicine itself heals, that is not permissible. Thus, it is stated in Al-Sirajiyyah.

Abu Ad-Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: Allah has sent down the disease and the cure, and He has made a cure for every disease. So seek treatment, but do not treat with what is forbidden [Narrated by Abu Dawud].

In Al-Durr al-Mukhtar: There is disagreement about treating with the prohibited. The apparent view of the school is prohibition, as in Bahr. However, the author cites Al-Hawi: It is permitted if it is known to cure and no other remedy is known, as wine was permitted for the thirsty. This is the view for fatwa. The hadith of this chapter, “do not treat with what is forbidden,” applies when there is no necessity, i.e., when there is another permissible remedy that suffices.

Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: Some of the Prophet’s companions said to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ): What about truffles, the smallpox of the earth? The Prophet (ﷺ) said: Truffles are from manna, and their water is a cure for the eye. Ajwah dates are from Paradise and a cure for poison. Abu Hurairah said: I took three, five, or seven truffles, squeezed them, put their water in a bottle, and used it as kohl for my servant girl who had weak eyes, and she was cured [Narrated by Tirmidhi, who said: This is a good hadith].

The entire hadith is intended, but the statement “Truffles are from manna, and their water is a cure for the eye” is authentic [Narrated by Ahmad, Bukhari, Muslim, Tirmidhi from Sa’id bin Zayd, and Ahmad, Nasai, Ibn Majah, and Abu Nu’aym in At-Tibb from Ibn Abbas and Aisha].

Abu Sa’id Al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: A man came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said: My brother has loose bowels. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: Give him honey. 1 He gave him honey, then returned and said: I gave him honey, but it only worsened his diarrhea. He said this three times. On the fourth time, the Prophet (ﷺ) said: Allah has spoken the truth, and your brother’s stomach has lied. He gave him honey, and he was cured [Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim].

Notes / الحواشي
English notes

1 The statement: "Give him honey": Al-Nawawi said: Some heretics objected, saying: Honey is a laxative, so how can it cure diarrhea? This objection is ignorant, as they have not grasped its knowledge (Yunus 10:39). Diarrhea has many types, including that caused by dysentery. Physicians agree that its treatment is to let nature take its course, and if it needs help with a laxative, it is aided. It is possible his diarrhea was from dysentery, and honey was prescribed to assist until the matter was expelled, stopping the diarrhea. It may also be a miracle. Thus, in Umdat al-Qari.

Abu Kabshah Al-Anmari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to get cupped on his head and between his shoulders, saying: Whoever sheds this blood will not be harmed by not treating anything with anything [Narrated by Abu Dawud and Ibn Majah].

Razin narrated from him: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was cupped on his head for poisoned mutton. Ma’mar said: I was cupped without poison on my head, and my good memory left 1 me until I needed prompting for the opening chapter in prayer.

Notes / الحواشي
English notes

1 The statement: "my good memory left me": Perhaps due to excessive bloodletting, or cupping in the wrong place or time. Otherwise, Ibn Abbas’s hadith, narrated by At-Tabarani and Abu Nu’aym, states: Cupping on the head cures seven ailments, if intended, including insanity, headache, leprosy, vitiligo, drowsiness, toothache, and blurred vision. Thus, in Al-Mirqat.

1 The statement: "Whoever is cupped on Wednesday or Saturday": In Al-Alamgiriyyah: Cupping after mid-month on Saturday is very beneficial, but disliked before mid-month. Thus, in Al-Fatawa Al-Attabiyyah. I say: Perhaps the Saturday mentioned in Al-Alamgiriyyah is specific to the 17th, 19th, or 21st, to avoid contradicting hadiths prohibiting cupping on Saturday. Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: Healing is in three: a cut of the cupping tool, a sip of honey, or cauterization with fire, but I forbid my nation from cauterization [Narrated by Bukhari].

Ali Al-Qari (may Allah have mercy on him) said in Al-Bari: The prohibition 1 is without necessity calling for it. This reconciles the narrations and validates the companions’ cauterization; otherwise, how could they oppose his command?

Notes / الحواشي
English notes

1 The statement: "The prohibition is without necessity": Bukhari titled a chapter in his Sahih: “On one who cauterizes or is cauterized, and the virtue of not cauterizing.” Al-Hafiz said: It seems he meant cauterization is permissible for need, but preferable to avoid if not essential, and it applies whether one does it themselves or for others. Bukhari cited Jabir’s hadith: If any of your medicines hold healing, it is in a cut of the cupping tool or a sting of fire, but I dislike cauterization. Al-Hafiz elaborated on narrations permitting and prohibiting it, then said: The prohibition is understood as dislike or less preferable, based on the collective hadiths. Some said it was specific to Imran, who had hemorrhoids in a dangerous spot, so the Prophet (ﷺ) forbade cauterizing it, but when it worsened, he cauterized it, and it failed. Ibn Qutaybah said: Cauterization is of two types: for the healthy to prevent illness, which is meant by “Whoever cauterizes is not relying on Allah,” as it seeks to defy fate, which cannot be defied; and for treating wounds or severed limbs, which is permissible. If cauterization is for a tolerable condition, it is less preferable due to inflicting pain with fire for something uncertain. The reconciliation: the act indicates permissibility, but not acting does not indicate prohibition; rather, avoiding it is better, and the prohibition is either advisory or for cases where it is not the only path to healing. Thus, in the margin of Al-Kawkab Ad-Durri.

Al-Mughirah bin Shu’bah narrated: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: Whoever cauterizes 1 or seeks charms has disavowed 2 reliance on Allah [Narrated by Ahmad, Tirmidhi, and Ibn Majah].

Notes / الحواشي
English notes

1 The statement: "Whoever cauterizes": Meaning excessively pursuing health measures to the point of cauterization without compelling necessity. Thus, in Al-Mirqat.

2 The statement: "has disavowed reliance": Means of removing harm are divided into: certain, like water for thirst or bread for hunger; probable, like bloodletting, cupping, laxatives, or treating cold with heat and vice versa, which are evident medical means; and speculative, like cauterization and charms. For certain means, abandoning them is not reliance but forbidden if death is feared. For speculative means, reliance requires abandoning them, as the Prophet (ﷺ) described the reliant thus. For probable means, like evident medical treatments, using them does not negate reliance, unlike speculative means, and abandoning them is not forbidden, unlike certain means, but may be preferable in some cases or for some people, placing it between the two. Thus, in Al-Fusul Al-Imadiyyah, chapter 34, and Al-Alamgiriyyah.

1 The statement: "cool it with water": Al-Nawawi said: “Cool it with water” does not specify the method or condition. Physicians agree that for bilious fever, the patient is cooled with very cold water, given ice, and their limbs are washed with cold water. It is likely the Prophet (ﷺ) meant this type of fever and washing as they described, leaving no room for heretics to fabricate lies. Thus, in Al-Mirqat.

Awf bin Malik Al-Ashja’i (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: We used charms in the pre-Islamic era, so we said: O Messenger of Allah, what do you think of this? He said: Present your charms to me. There is no harm in charms unless they involve polytheism [Narrated by Muslim].

In Malik’s narration: Abu Bakr entered upon Aisha while she was ill and a Jewish woman was charming her. He said: Charm her with the Book of Allah.

Muhammad said in Al-Muwatta: We hold that there is no harm in charms with Allah’s remembrance 1 or Quran, but not with unknown words.

Notes / الحواشي
English notes

1 The statement: "with Allah’s remembrance or Quran": Meaning its verses and letters, or any remembrance, provided it is in Arabic or another known language. It is permissible to write Quran or other words, wash them, and give them to the sick to drink. The healing verses of the Quran, and the entire Quran is healing, especially Surah Al-Fatihah, have a profound effect. Unknown or strange words are not permissible for charms, as they may contain disbelief or polytheism, common in many charm practices, unless presented to the Prophet (ﷺ) and approved. Further details are in Madarij An-Nubuwwah, Al-Mawahib Al-Ladunniyyah and its commentary, and Al-Hisn Al-Hasin and its commentary. Thus, in At-Ta’liq Al-Mumajjad.

Notes / الحواشي
English notes

1 The statement: "the charm for namlah": In Bazl al-Majhood: Namlah refers to sores on the side(s). The charm for namlah was words used by Arab women, known to listeners as harmless and ineffective, like: The bride adorns, dyes, and applies kohl, doing everything, but does not disobey the man.

2 The statement: "as you taught her writing": This indicates the permissibility of teaching women to write. The hadith “Do not teach them writing” applies to cases where corruption is feared. Thus, in Bazl al-Majhood.

Zaynab, the wife of Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with them), narrated: Abdullah saw a thread around my neck and said: What is this thread? I said: A thread charmed for me. He took it, cut it, and said: You, the family of Abdullah, are free from polytheism. I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: Charms, amulets, and love charms are polytheism. I said: Why say this? My eye was oozing, and I visited a Jewish man who charmed it, and it calmed. Abdullah said: That was Satan’s work, poking it with his hand, and when he charmed it, he stopped. It would have sufficed to say what the Messenger 1 of Allah (ﷺ) said: Remove the affliction, Lord of mankind, heal, You are the Healer, no healing but Yours, a healing leaving no illness [Narrated by Abu Dawud].

In Al-Musawwa: The hadiths on charms differ. The reconciliation: The prohibited charms involve polytheism, invoke devils, or use unknown non-Arabic words that may include sorcery or disbelief. Charms with the Quran or Allah’s remembrance are recommended. 2

Praise be to Allah. Those with perfect faith and sound belief will find what I found.

2 The statement: "are recommended": Some charms are transmitted from the predecessors. Aisha said there is no harm in seeking protection in water for treatment. Mujahid said there is no harm in writing Quran, washing it, and giving it to the sick. Ibn Abbas ordered a man to write two Quranic verses and words for a woman with difficult labor, wash them, and give her to drink. Sa’id bin Al-Musayyib was asked about small papers with Quran hung on women or children and said: No harm if wrapped in leather, iron, or sewn. Blowing (nafth) is in authentic hadiths. Thus, in Al-Musawwa.

English notes

1 The statement: "The disliked amulet": In Ash-Shalbi from Ibn Al-Athir: Amulets are beads the Arabs hung on their children, believing they warded off the evil eye, which Islam abolished. There is no harm in tying charms on the arm for the side or menstruating women if wrapped. Cited from Radd al-Muhtar.

In Al-Durr al-Mukhtar and Al-Mujtaba: The disliked amulet 1 is in a non-Arabic language.

English notes

1 The statement: "I care not what I do": Ibn Al-Malik said: This means composing poetry, drinking theriac, or hanging amulets is forbidden for me. For the nation, amulets and poetry are not forbidden if free of lies, slandering Muslims, or sins. Likewise, theriac without forbidden ingredients like snake meat or wine is permissible. Thus, in Al-Mirqat.
