Grooming the Hair
Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated: I used to comb the head of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) while I was menstruating [Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim].
Ata bin Yasar narrated: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was in the mosque when a man with disheveled hair and beard entered. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) gestured to him with his hand as if ordering him to fix his hair and beard. He did so and returned. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: Is this not better than one of you coming with disheveled hair, looking like a devil? [Narrated by Malik].
Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: He said to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ): I have a forelock; should I comb it? The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: Yes, and honor it. Abu Qatadah said: So, sometimes he oiled it twice a day because of the saying of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ): Yes, and honor it [Narrated by Malik]. In a narration by Abu Dawud from Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him), the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: Whoever has hair should honor it.
Abdullah bin Mughaffal (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) prohibited combing the hair except occasionally [Narrated by Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud, and Nasai]. It is stated in Al-Musawwa: This is the practice. As for the hadith of Abu Qatadah, it is his understanding from the saying "and honor it," and perhaps the intended honoring is specific, meaning moderate and balanced between excessive indulgence and neglecting cleanliness and appearance.
Abdullah bin Buraidah narrated: A man said to Fadalat bin Ubaid: Why do I see you disheveled? He said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to prohibit us from excessive refinement. The man said: Why do I not see footwear on you? He said: The Prophet (ﷺ) used to order us to go barefoot sometimes [Narrated by Abu Dawud].
Ibn al-Musayyib narrated: He heard: Allah is good and loves goodness, clean and loves cleanliness, generous and loves generosity, bountiful and loves bounty. So clean, I think he said, your courtyards, and do not resemble the Jews. He said: I mentioned this to Muhajir bin Mismar, and he said: Amir bin Saad narrated it to me from his father from the Prophet (ﷺ) similarly, except he said: Clean your courtyards [Narrated by Tirmidhi].
Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated: I used to bathe with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) from a single vessel, and his hair was above a forelock but below a full head of hair [Narrated by Tirmidhi and Nasai].
Ibn al-Khunzaliyyah, a man from the companions of the Prophet (ﷺ), narrated: The Prophet (ﷺ) said: What an excellent man Khuraim al-Asadi is, if only it were not for the length of his forelock and the trailing of his lower garment. This reached Khuraim, so he took a blade and cut his forelock to his ears 1 and raised his lower garment to the middle of his shins [Narrated by Abu Dawud].
Notes /
1 The statement: "cut his forelock to his ears": It is stated in Sharh al-Sunnah: This indicates the permissibility of cutting the forelock to the ears for men. As for women, they let their hair down and do not adopt a forelock. Thus, it is stated in Al-Mirqat.
Wail bin Hujr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: I came to the Prophet (ﷺ) with long hair. When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) saw me, he said: Evil, evil. 2 I returned and cut it, then came to him the next day. He said: I did not mean you, 3 but this is better [Narrated by Abu Dawud]. The author of Bazl al-Majhood said: This, meaning shortening the hair, is better than lengthening it, though lengthening is permissible. Al-Tahawi said in Mushkil al-Athar: This hadith from the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) indicates that cutting the hair is better than growing it, and what the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) deemed better is unmatched, so it is obligatory to follow the better option and abandon what opposes it.
Notes /
2 The statement: "evil": With a stressed "dhal" in both, a light "ba," and after the "alif" a similar letter. "Evil" refers to misfortune, and it is said: "evil" refers to hardships. Thus, it is stated in Bazl al-Majhood.
3 The statement: "I did not mean you": Because long hair is not blameworthy, nor is there a command to cut beyond a specific length, but cutting the hair is better than growing it. This is derived from Al-Mirqat.
Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The hair of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) reached the lobes of his ears [Narrated by Abu Dawud]. It is stated in Al-Arf al-Shadhi: There is an issue with the hadith about braids, as the custom for hair is the forelock, the medium length, and the full head of hair, but braids are not established. As for three sections, perhaps the narrator saw them under his turban, as they were three due to the turban during the conquest of Makkah. The Hafiz passed over this narration without comment. In Al-Fatawa al-Hindiyyah, in the chapter on prohibitions and permissions: Braids for men are disliked, but there is no dislike for letting the hair down.
Abdullah bin Jaafar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Prophet (ﷺ) gave the family of Jaafar three days, then came to them and said: Do not weep for my brother after today. Then he said: Call my brother’s children to me. We were brought to him like chicks, and he said: Call the barber for me. He ordered him to shave our heads 1 [Narrated by Abu Dawud and Nasai].
Notes /
1 The statement: "shave our heads": It is stated in Al-Mirqat: Their heads were shaved, despite keeping hair being preferable, except after completing one of the rituals, as is customary in the most complete manner. This was due to their mother, Asma bint Umais, being preoccupied with their hair care due to the death of her husband in the cause of Allah, so he took pity on them for the dirt and lice.
Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) prohibited a woman from shaving her head 2 [Narrated by Nasai].
Notes /
2 The statement: "prohibited a woman from shaving her head": It is stated in Al-Mirqat: This is because braids for women are like beards for men in terms of appearance and beauty. By implication, it permits shaving for men, with no disagreement on this. However, there is disagreement on whether it is Sunnah, as Ali (may Allah ennoble his face) did it, and it was affirmed by the Prophet (ﷺ) who said: Follow my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the rightly guided caliphs. Or it is not Sunnah, as the Prophet (ﷺ) and his companions (may Allah be pleased with them) consistently avoided shaving except after completing one of the rituals. Shaving is a concession and recommended, but keeping hair is preferable and Sunnah. In Al-Alamgiriyyah: If a woman shaves her head due to pain, there is no issue, but if she does so to resemble a man, it is disliked. Thus, it is stated in Al-Kabiriyyah.
Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated: The Prophet (ﷺ) liked to agree with the People of the Book in matters he was not commanded about. The People of the Book let their hair down, while the polytheists parted their heads. The Prophet (ﷺ) let his forelock down, then parted it later 1 [Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim].
Notes /
1 The statement: "then parted it later": Parting the hair is Sunnah, as it is what the Prophet (ﷺ) returned to, likely by revelation from Him, the Exalted. This is stated in Bazl al-Majhood. In Radd al-Muhtar and Al-Alamgiriyyah: The Sunnah for head hair is either parting or shaving.
Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated: When I parted the head of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), I made a parting from the crown of his head and let his forelock fall between his eyes [Narrated by Abu Dawud].
Nafi narrated from Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both): I heard the Prophet (ﷺ) prohibit partial shaving. 2 I asked Nafi: What is partial shaving? He said: Shaving part of a child’s head and leaving part [Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim]. Some have included the explanation with the hadith.
Notes /
2 The statement: "prohibit partial shaving": Al-Nawawi said: Our school holds that it is generally disliked for men and women due to the absolute wording of the hadith. He said: This is a disapproved act of avoidance. Malik and the Hanafis also disapproved of it. It is not specific to children; if an adult does it, it is disliked for them as well, but children are mentioned due to common practice. This is stated in Bazl al-Majhood. In Radd al-Muhtar and Al-Alamgiriyyah: Partial shaving is disliked, which is shaving some parts and leaving others.
Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated: The Prophet (ﷺ) saw a boy with part of his head shaved and part left, so he prohibited them from doing so and said: Shave it all 3 or leave it all [Narrated by Muslim].
Notes /
3 The statement: "Shave it all or leave it all": This indicates that shaving outside of Hajj and Umrah is permissible, and a man has the choice between shaving and leaving it. However, the principle is not to shave except during one of the rituals, as was the practice of the Prophet (ﷺ) and his companions (may Allah be pleased with them), except for Ali (may Allah ennoble his face). Thus, it is stated in Al-Mirqat.
Al-Hajjaj bin Hassan narrated: We visited Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), and my sister Al-Mughirah told me: You were a boy then with two braids or tufts. He rubbed your head and blessed you, saying: Shave these or cut them, for this is the style of the Jews [Narrated by Abu Dawud].
Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: I had a braid, and my mother said: I will not cut it, 1 for the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to pull it and hold it [Narrated by Abu Dawud].
Notes /
1 The statement: "I will not cut it" etc.: This indicates that a braid is permissible for a boy if it is with other hair on the head. But if all his hair is shaved, leaving only a braid, that is the partial shaving prohibited by the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). Thus, it is stated in Bazl al-Majhood.
Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated: The Prophet (ﷺ) said: Allah has cursed the one 2 who joins hair and the one who has her hair joined, and the one who tattoos 3 and the one who is tattooed [Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim].
Notes /
2 The statement: "Allah has cursed the one who joins hair": Know that the narrators and jurists differed on hair joining. The narrators generalized the prohibition, whether it is with human hair or otherwise. The jurists interpreted the prohibition as applying to joining with women’s hair, as using a human’s part is forbidden. This joining is disliked according to the jurists, as is joining that involves deception. Joining with non-human hair is permissible, as it does not involve using a human part or deception. The jurists’ view is correct, as women have the right to adorn themselves as long as it does not involve other forms of disapproval. Thus, it is stated in Al-Alamgiriyyah: Joining hair with human hair is forbidden, whether it is her hair or another’s. Thus, it is stated in Al-Ikhtiyar Sharh al-Mukhtar. There is no issue with a woman placing wool in her braids or locks. Thus, it is stated in Fatawa Qadi Khan. There is disagreement on the validity of a woman’s prayer with attached non-human hair, but the preferred view is that it is permissible. Thus, it is stated in Al-Ghayathiyyah.
3 The statement: "the one who tattoos": In Hanafi books, the tattooed area is considered impure, as the blood has left its place and solidified under the skin, which is impure. Thus, it is stated in Al-Arf al-Shadhi.
Abdullah bin Masud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: Allah has cursed those women who tattoo or get tattooed, those who pluck their eyebrows, and those who create gaps in their teeth for beauty, altering Allah’s creation. A woman came to him and said: It has reached me that you cursed such-and-such. He said: Why should I not curse those whom the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) cursed, and it is in the Book of Allah? She said: I have read what is between the two covers, but I did not find what you say. He said: If you had read it, you would have found it. Have you not read: And whatever the Messenger has given you, take; and whatever he has forbidden you, refrain from? She said: Yes. He said: Indeed, he has forbidden it [Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim].
Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated: Cursed are the one who joins hair, the one who has her hair joined, the one who plucks eyebrows, the one who has her eyebrows plucked, the one who tattoos, and the one who is tattooed, without a medical reason [Narrated by Abu Dawud].
Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: The evil eye is real, and he prohibited tattooing [Narrated by Bukhari].
Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated: I saw the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) with matted hair 1 [Narrated by Bukhari].
Notes /
1 The statement: "with matted hair": This indicates the permissibility of matting hair outside the state of Ihram. This is stated in Al-Mirqat.
Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) frequently oiled his head and combed his beard, and he often used a head covering, 2 as if his garment was that of an oil seller [Narrated in Sharh al-Sunnah].
Notes /
2 The statement: "frequently used a head covering": This refers to a cloth placed on the head under the turban after using oil to protect the turban from the oil’s effect and dirt, likened to a woman’s veil. Thus, it is stated in Al-Mirqat.
Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated: I used to apply the best perfume the Prophet (ﷺ) could find, until I could smell the fragrance’s 3 shine on his head and beard [Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim].
Notes /
3 The statement: "I could smell the fragrance’s shine on his head and beard": Al-Muzhir said: This does not contradict the statement that the best perfume for men is one with a subtle scent, as the intent is a scent that appears as adornment and beauty, like redness or yellowness. What lacks this, like musk and amber, is permissible. Camphor and civet are similar. This is stated in Al-Mirqat. In Al-Alamgiriyyah: There is no issue with perfuming the head and beard. Thus, it is stated in Al-Fatawa al-Attabiyyah.
Nafi narrated: Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) used to perfume himself with pure aloe and camphor mixed with aloe, then said: This is how the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to perfume himself [Narrated by Muslim].
Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: The natural practices 1 are five: circumcision, 2 shaving the pubic hair, 3 trimming the mustache,4 clipping the nails,5 and plucking the armpit hair6 [Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim]. Ahmad narrated with a good chain from the father of Abu al-Malih, and Tabarani narrated from Shaddad bin Aws and Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: Circumcision is a Sunnah for men and an honor for women.
Notes /
1 The statement: "The natural practices are five": In Umdat al-Qari, it is said: The natural practices refer to the ancient Sunnah chosen by the prophets (peace be upon them) and agreed upon by religious laws, as if it is an innate matter they were created with.
2 The statement: "circumcision": In Sharh Shariat al-Islam, it is said: Circumcision is from the Sunnah, as stated by Abu Hanifah. Most scholars, including Shafi’i, say it is obligatory, as it is one of the symbols of Islam. It is possible that Abu Hanifah meant it is established by the Sunnah, not that it is non-obligatory. Most books state that circumcision is a Sunnah, but this applies if one is not born fully circumcised. We specify this because in Al-Khulasah and Majma al-Fatawa, it is said: If a boy is born circumcised such that one would see him as circumcised and further circumcision would be difficult, and experts among barbers confirm this, it is left alone and not touched. Razin al-Arab mentioned that fourteen prophets were born circumcised: Adam, Seth, Noah, Salih, Shuaib, Yusuf, Musa, Zakariya, Sulaiman, Isa, Hanzalah bin Safwan (the prophet of the people of Ar-Rass), and our Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him and all prophets and messengers). The author of Shariah stated that all prophets were born circumcised and with their umbilical cords cut as an honor so no one would see their private parts, except Ibrahim (peace be upon him), who circumcised himself to establish a Sunnah for those after him. For women, it is an honor. In Khazanat al-Fatawa, circumcision for men is a Sunnah, and there is disagreement about women’s circumcision. In Adab al-Qadi, it is disliked, and elsewhere it is a Sunnah. Some scholars say it is obligatory, others say it is mandatory. I say: The correct view is that it is a Sunnah, and an honor refers to a noble act. In Fatawa al-Sufiyyah, the time for circumcision is from seven to ten years, likely meaning the optimal and balanced time. In Al-Alamgiriyyah: There is disagreement about circumcision; it is said to be a Sunnah, which is the correct view. Thus, it is stated in Al-Gharaib. The preferred time for circumcision starts from seven to twelve years, which is the chosen view. Thus, it is stated in Al-Sirajiyyah. Some say it is permissible after seven days from birth. Thus, it is stated in Jawahir al-Fatawa. Narrations differ about women’s circumcision; some say it is a Sunnah, as reported from some scholars, and Shams al-Aimmah al-Halwani stated in Adab al-Qadi by Al-Khasaf that women’s circumcision is an honor. Thus, it is stated in Al-Muhit.
3 The statement: "shaving the pubic hair": This refers to using a blade, like a razor, to shave the pubic hair around the private parts of a man or woman. Ibn Shuraih added: and the hair around the anus, making the pubic area any place where hair grows, but the well-known view is the former. If the hair is removed without a blade, it is not in accordance with the Sunnah. Thus, it is stated in Sharh al-Mashariq. It must be known that no hair should be cut while in a state of major impurity. This is stated in Al-Mirqat. In Al-Durr al-Mukhtar: Shaving the pubic hair is recommended. In Al-Hindiyyah: It starts from below the navel. In Al-Ashbah: The Sunnah for a woman’s pubic hair is plucking.
4 The statement: "trimming the mustache": Linguists say that complete removal means shaving it off entirely, and extreme removal is exaggerating this. Trimming means taking part of it, and both are established. The Sunnah indicates both commands. Malik preferred trimming the mustache over shaving it completely. Al-Tahawi said: We found no explicit statement from Shafi’i on this, but his students, like Muzani and Rabi, seemed to shave their mustaches, indicating they took it from Shafi’i. Al-Ashqar said: I saw Ahmad bin Hanbal shave his mustache thoroughly and heard him say, when asked about complete removal, that it is the Sunnah. Abu Hanifah and his companions said: Shaving the mustache is recommended and better than trimming, as the natural practice is what is necessary, which is trimming the mustache, and anything beyond that is a virtuous addition. All the narrations we have reported in this chapter are established and not contradictory. The obligation of their authenticity is that complete removal is better than trimming. The companions of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to shave their mustaches, including Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him), who narrated from the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) that trimming the mustache is part of the natural practices, indicating it is necessary, and complete removal beyond that is better, achieving a good that trimming does not. This is derived from Al-Mirqat, Sharh Maani al-Athar, and Bazl al-Majhood.
5 The statement: "clipping the nails": It is recommended to clip nails, except for a warrior in the land of war, where it is recommended to grow the mustache and nails. Friday is the best day for this, preferably after prayer, unless delayed excessively, which is disliked, as long nails cause restricted provision. In a hadith: Whoever clips their nails on Friday is protected from calamities until the next Friday plus three days [Durr]. In a mursal hadith by Bayhaqi, he (ﷺ) used to clip his nails and trim his mustache on Friday before going to prayer. Al-Nawawi and Al-Abbadi narrated: Whoever wants wealth reluctantly should clip their nails on Thursday. In a weak hadith: O Ali! Clip nails, pluck armpit hair, and shave pubic hair on Thursday, and bathe, perfume, and dress on Friday. In Sharh al-Ghaznawiyyah: It is narrated that he (ﷺ) started with the index finger of the right hand to the pinky, then the pinky of the left hand to the thumb, and ended with the right thumb. Al-Ghazali mentioned a valid reason for this in Al-Ihya. In Al-Hidayah from Al-Gharaib: One should start and end with the right hand, beginning with its index finger and ending with its thumb. For the feet, start with the right pinky and end with the left pinky. Qahastani cited from Al-Masudiyyah: Clipping nails with teeth is disliked as it causes leprosy. If one clips their nails or cuts their hair, they should bury it. Throwing it is permissible, but discarding it in a latrine or bathhouse is disliked, as it causes illness [Khaniyyah]. Four things should be buried: nails, hair, menstrual cloth, and blood [Attabiyyah, Al-Durr al-Mukhtar, Radd al-Muhtar, Al-Mirqat].
6 The statement: "plucking the armpit hair": In Radd al-Muhtar: It is permissible to remove armpit hair by shaving or plucking, with plucking being preferable.
Umm Atiyyah Al-Ansariyyah narrated: A woman in Madinah used to perform circumcision, and the Prophet (ﷺ) said to her: Do not cut excessively, for that is better for the woman and more pleasing to the husband [Narrated by Abu Dawud]. It is said: This hadith is weak, and its narrator is unknown, but Tabarani narrated it with a sound chain.

Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: Differ from the polytheists, let your beards grow, 3 and shave your mustaches. In another narration: Remove your mustaches completely and let your beards grow [Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim]. As for the narration: Trim the mustache, it means: Remove the mustache hair with scissors, not a razor, as that is an innovation.
Notes /
3 The statement: "let your beards grow": In Al-Durr al-Mukhtar, it is therefore forbidden for a man to cut his beard.
Amr bin Shuaib narrated from his father from his grandfather (may Allah be pleased with him): The Prophet (ﷺ) used to trim his beard 1 from its width and length [Narrated by Tirmidhi]. Muhammad narrated in Kitab al-Athar from Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he used to grasp his beard and cut what was below the grasp, and he said: This is what we follow, and it is the opinion of Abu Hanifah.
Notes /
1 The statement: "used to trim his beard from its width and length": Therefore, our jurists said: There is no issue with trimming the edges of the beard, and the Sunnah is the grasp, meaning a man grasps his beard, and what exceeds the grasp is cut. Thus, Muhammad stated in Kitab al-Athar from the Imam, saying: This is what we follow [Muhit]. This is derived from Al-Durr al-Mukhtar and Radd al-Muhtar.

Yahya bin Saad narrated: He heard Said bin al-Musayyib say: Ibrahim was the first to host a guest, the first to be circumcised, the first to trim the mustache, and the first to see gray hair. He said: O Lord, what is this? Allah, Blessed and Exalted, said: Dignity, O Ibrahim. He said: O Lord, increase me in dignity [Narrated by Malik].

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: We were given a time limit for trimming the mustache, clipping the nails, plucking the armpit hair, and shaving the pubic hair, not to leave it 2 for more than forty nights [Narrated by Muslim].
Notes /
2 The statement: "not to leave it for more than forty nights": In Al-Qunya: The best is to clip nails, shave the mustache, shave the pubic hair, and clean the body by bathing once a week. If not, then every fifteen days. There is no excuse for leaving it beyond forty days. The week is the best, fifteen days is moderate, forty days is the furthest, and there is no excuse beyond forty days, and it incurs a warning according to us. Thus, it is stated in Al-Mirqat and Al-Alamgiriyyah.

Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Prophet (ﷺ) said: The Jews and Christians do not dye their hair, so differ from them 3 [Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim].
Notes /
3 The statement: "so differ from them": Therefore, it is recommended for a man to dye his hair and beard, even outside of war, according to the stronger opinion, but not his hands or feet, as that is disliked for resembling women. This is derived from Al-Durr al-Mukhtar and Radd al-Muhtar.

Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: The best thing 1 to change gray hair with is henna and katam [Narrated by Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud, and Nasai].
Notes /
1 The statement: "The best thing to change gray hair with is henna and katam": In Al-Alamgiriyyah: The scholars agreed that dyeing for men with red is a Sunnah, and it is a mark and sign of Muslims. The Imam said: Dyeing is good, but with henna, katam, and wasmah, referring to the beard and head hair. Dyeing outside of war is permissible in the stronger opinion. Thus, it is stated in Al-Wajiz lil-Kurdari.

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Prophet (ﷺ) prohibited a man from using saffron [Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim]. In Al-Nihayah: The narrations permitting saffron for men are abrogated.
Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated: He used to dye his beard with yellow until his clothes were filled with yellow. He was asked: Why do you dye with yellow? He said: I saw the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) dye with it, and nothing was dearer to him than it. He used to dye all his clothes with it, even his turban [Narrated by Abu Dawud and Nasai].
Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated: A man who had dyed with henna passed by the Prophet (ﷺ), and he said: How nice this is. Another who had dyed with henna and katam passed by, and he said: This is better than that. Another who had dyed with yellow passed by, and he said: This is better than all of them [Narrated by Abu Dawud].

Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: Abu Quhafah was brought on the day of the conquest of Makkah, and his head and beard were white like thaghamah. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: Change this with something and avoid black 1 [Narrated by Muslim].
Notes /
1 The statement: "avoid black": In Umdat al-Qari, it is narrated from Ibn Wahb from Malik: I have not heard a clear prohibition on dyeing hair black, but other colors are preferable to me. Ahmad has two narrations, and the Shafi’is have two as well, with the well-known view being that it is disliked. Some say it is prohibited. In Al-Dhakhirah: Dyeing with black is praiseworthy for warriors to appear more intimidating to the enemy, as agreed by the scholars (may Allah have mercy on them). But if done to beautify oneself for women and to attract them, it is disliked according to most scholars. Some permitted it without dislike. It is narrated from Abu Yusuf: Just as I like her to adorn herself for me, it pleases her that I adorn myself for her. Thus, it is stated in Al-Alamgiriyyah and Radd al-Muhtar.
Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: There will be people at the end of time who dye their hair black like the crops of pigeons; they will not smell the fragrance of Paradise [Narrated by Abu Dawud and Nasai]. Ibn Majah narrated from Suhaib al-Khair that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: The best thing you dye with is this black, as it is more desirable to your women and more intimidating to your enemies.
Amr bin Shuaib narrated from his father from his grandfather (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: Do not pluck gray hair, for it is the light of a Muslim. Whoever has a gray hair in Islam, Allah records a good deed for it, forgives a sin, and raises him a degree [Narrated by Abu Dawud].
Ka’b bin Hurrah narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: Whoever has a gray hair in Islam, it will be a light for him on the Day of Resurrection [Narrated by Tirmidhi and Nasai]. Ahmad narrated in his Musnad from Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: O Ansar, use red and yellow dyes and differ from the People of the Book. If he leaves it white without dyeing, there is no harm. Muhammad said in his Muwatta: We see no issue with dyeing with wasmah, henna, and yellow, and if he leaves it white, there is no harm; all of it is good.
Thabit narrated: Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked about the Prophet’s (ﷺ) dyeing, and he said: If I wanted to count the gray hairs on his head, I could. He said: He did not dye. 2 In another narration: Abu Bakr dyed with henna and katam, and Umar dyed with pure henna [Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim].
Notes /
2 The statement: "He did not dye": In Al-Durr al-Mukhtar: The stronger opinion is that he (ﷺ) did not do it. In Radd al-Muhtar: Because he did not need it, as he passed away with fewer than twenty gray hairs in his head and beard, specifically seventeen, as in Bukhari and others. It is narrated that Abu Bakr dyed with henna and katam [Madani]. In Al-Mirqat: The correct view is as stated by the author of Al-Nihayah that the chosen opinion is that he (ﷺ) dyed at one time and left it most times, so each narrated what they saw truthfully. This interpretation is necessary to reconcile the hadiths and is the ultimate claim.
Uthman bin Abdullah bin Mawhab narrated: I visited Umm Salamah, and she brought out to us hair of the Prophet (ﷺ) that was dyed [Narrated by Bukhari].
Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that Hind bint Utbah said: O Prophet of Allah, accept my pledge. He said: I will not accept your pledge until you change your hands, as they look like the paws 1 of a beast [Narrated by Abu Dawud].
Notes /
1 The statement: "as they look like the paws of a beast": He likened her undyed hands to the paws of a beast in terms of dislike, as they resemble men’s hands, and resembling men is disliked. This indicates the dislike of men dyeing their hands to resemble women. Thus, it is stated in Al-Mirqat.
Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated: A woman from behind a curtain gestured with her hand, holding a letter to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). The Prophet (ﷺ) withdrew his hand and said: I do not know if this is a man’s hand or a woman’s. She said: It is a woman’s hand. He said: If you were a woman, you would have changed your nails, meaning with henna [Narrated by Abu Dawud and Nasai].
Karima bint Hammam narrated that a woman asked Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) 1 about dyeing with henna. She said: There is no harm, but I dislike it because my beloved (ﷺ) disliked its smell 2 [Narrated by Abu Dawud and Nasai].
Notes /
1 The statement: "asked Aisha about dyeing with henna": Dyeing includes both hair and body, but Abu Dawud’s chapter heading about women indicates it refers to body dyeing. Dyeing hands and feet with henna is recommended for women and prohibited for men except for medical needs or the like. Thus, it is stated in Bazl al-Majhood.
2 The statement: "my beloved disliked its smell": In Al-Mirqat: Shafi’i used this to argue that henna is not a perfume because he (ﷺ) loved perfume. It is possible that this type of perfume did not suit his noble nature, just as civet does not suit some, or as he loved meat but refrained from certain animals because his noble self-disliked them. It appears that his dislike was specific to hair, as it retains its greasiness and staleness. Thus, he turned to wasmah and saffron for dyeing his noble beard. As for the hands of the Mothers of the Believers, he undoubtedly did not dislike it, as he disapproved of a woman who did not use henna.
Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: An effeminate 1 man who had dyed his hands and feet with henna was brought to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). The Prophet (ﷺ) said: What is the matter with him? They said: He imitates women. He ordered him to be exiled to Naqi’. It was said: O Messenger of Allah, shall we not kill him? He said: I have been forbidden 2 from killing those who pray [Narrated by Abu Dawud].
Notes /
1 The statement: "An effeminate man who had dyed his hands and feet with henna": In Radd al-Muhtar: Dyeing a man’s hands and feet is disliked due to resembling women. Elsewhere it states: In Al-Bahr al-Zakhir, it is disliked for a person to dye their hands and feet, and also for a boy, except for a need. For women, it is permissible [Binayah]. I say: It appears that just as it is disliked for a man to do it for a boy, it is disliked for a woman, even though it is permissible for her to do it for herself. In Al-Alamgiriyyah: A boy’s hands and feet should not be dyed except for a need, but it is permissible for women. Thus, it is stated in Al-Yanabi.
2 The statement: "I have been forbidden from killing those who pray": In Al-Mirqat: This hadith does not indicate that one who deliberately abandons prayer should be killed, as per Shafi’i’s followers, because the description of a pray-er applies to one who predominantly prays, and abandoning it once or twice does not remove this description. It cannot be said that a pray-er in custom is one who prays once or more without predominantly praying, because some of our scholars said: Whoever calls our ruler just is a disbeliever, even though he may act justly. Indeed, it implies by inference, for those who consider it, that those who abandon prayer are killed because they forsake the greatest symbol of Islam. However, their killing is through combat. Thus, some scholars said: If the people of a town abandon the call to prayer, I would fight them.
Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated: The Prophet (ﷺ) cursed effeminate men and masculine women, and said: Expel them from your houses [Narrated by Bukhari].
Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated: The Prophet (ﷺ) said: Allah has cursed men who imitate women and women who imitate men [Narrated by Bukhari].
Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) cursed the man 1 who wears women’s clothing and the woman who wears men’s clothing [Narrated by Abu Dawud].
Notes /
1 The statement: "cursed the man who wears women’s clothing": There is no issue with a boy or adult wearing pearls. Thus, it is stated in Sharh al-Wahbaniyyah citing Al-Munyah, as Allah says: And you extract adornment from it that you wear [An-Nahl: 14], referring to pearls and coral, indicating permissibility. Also, Allah says: He who created for you all that is on the earth [Al-Baqarah: 29]. In Al-Jawharah and Al-Siraj, pearls are prohibited because they are women’s adornments. Abu Dawud, Nasai, Ibn Majah, and Hakim narrated, and he said it is authentic per Muslim’s criteria: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) cursed the man who wears women’s clothing and the woman who wears men’s clothing. This includes pearls by extension, as women commonly wear them. In Al-Durr al-Mukhtar: The author reconciled Al-Munyah’s view with Al-Jawharah’s by noting that wearing a pearl necklace is considered adornment, per the custom in oath texts. If one swears not to wear adornment and wears it, they break the oath per custom. In Al-Kafi, their view is closer to our custom, so it is followed. The relied-upon view in the school is that pearls and similar are prohibited for men as they are women’s adornments. This is derived from Al-Durr al-Mukhtar and Radd al-Muhtar.
Ibn Abi Mulaykah narrated: It was said to Aisha: A woman wears sandals. She said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) cursed masculine women [Narrated by Abu Dawud].
Ya’la bin Murrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Prophet (ﷺ) saw khaluq (saffron-based perfume) on him and said: Do you have a wife? He said: No. The Prophet said: Wash it off, then wash it off, then wash it off, and do not do it again 1 [Narrated by Tirmidhi and Nasai].
Notes /
1 The statement: "do not do it again": It is not befitting for men. Thus, it is stated in Al-Mirqat.
Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: I returned to my family from a journey with cracked hands, and they applied saffron to me. I went to the Prophet (ﷺ) and greeted him, but he did not return the greeting and said: Go and wash this off yourself [Narrated by Abu Dawud].
Al-Walid bin Uqbah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) conquered Makkah, the people of Makkah brought their children to him, and he prayed for blessings for them and touched their heads. I was brought to him, but I had khaluq on me, 2 so he did not touch me because of the khaluq [Narrated by Abu Dawud].
Notes /
2 The statement: "I had khaluq on me, so he did not touch me because of the khaluq": This indicates that what is prohibited for men is also prohibited for them to use on boys, whether clothing or otherwise, contrary to what Shafi’i said, that adults are not responsible for dressing children. Thus, it is stated in Bazl al-Majhood.
Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: Allah does not accept 1 the prayer of a man who has any khaluq on his body [Narrated by Abu Dawud].
Notes /
1 The statement: "Allah does not accept": This means the complete reward of the prayer is negated due to resembling women. Thus, it is stated in Al-Mirqat.
Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: The perfume for men is that whose scent is apparent and whose color is hidden, and the perfume for women 2 is that whose color is apparent and whose scent is hidden [Narrated by Tirmidhi and Nasai].
Notes /
2 The statement: "the perfume for women": In Sharh al-Sunnah, Saad said: They understood this to apply when a woman goes out, but when she is with her husband, she may use whatever perfume she wishes. Thus, it is stated in Al-Mirqat.
Anas narrated: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) had a sukka 3 (a type of perfume) from which he would apply perfume [Narrated by Abu Dawud].
Notes /
3 The statement: "had a sukka": With a stressed sīn and kāf, it is a rare type of perfume, said to be made from sukk. In Al-Qamus: Sukk is a perfume made from ramik. It likely refers to a container holding perfume, as indicated by the phrase “he would apply perfume from it,” for if it meant the perfume itself, it would have said “with it.” Al-Jazari said in Tasheeh al-Masabeeh: Sukk, with a stressed sīn and kāf, is a composite perfume, and sukka is a piece of it, or possibly a container. Mirak said: If it refers to the perfume itself, the word “from” indicates partial use, suggesting he used it in portions, unlike saying “with it,” which implies using it all at once. If it refers to a container, “from” indicates the starting point. Thus, it is stated in Al-Mirqat.

Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) traveled, the last person he would see from his family was Fatimah, and the first he would visit upon return was Fatimah. He returned from an expedition, and she had hung a cloth or curtain 1 at her door and adorned Al-Hasan and Al-Husayn 2 with silver necklaces. He arrived but did not enter. She thought he refrained because of what he saw, so she tore down the curtain, removed the necklaces from the boys, and cut them apart. The boys went to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) crying, and he took the necklaces from them and said: O Thawban, 3 take this to the family of so-and-so. These are my family, and I dislike that they consume their good things in their worldly life. O Thawban, buy for Fatimah a necklace of palm fiber and two bracelets of ivory [Narrated by Ahmad and Abu Dawud].
Notes /
1 The statement: "she had hung a cloth or curtain at her door": In Al-Alamgiriyyah, the jurist Abu Ja’far said in Sharh al-Sir al-Kabir: There is no issue with covering house walls with patterned felt if the intent is to ward off cold. If the intent is adornment, it is disliked. Shams al-Aimmah al-Sarakhsi said in Sharh al-Sir: There is no issue with covering house walls with felt if the intent is to ward off cold, adding: or with straw if the intent is to ward off heat. What is disliked is what is done for adornment. Thus, it is stated in Al-Dhakhirah. Hanging a curtain at the door is disliked, as Muhammad explicitly stated in Al-Sir al-Kabir, because it is adornment and arrogance. The conclusion is that anything done for arrogance is disliked, but if done for need or necessity, it is not, and this is the chosen view. Thus, it is stated in Al-Ghayathiyyah.
2 The statement: "adorned Al-Hasan and Al-Husayn with silver necklaces": The Prophet (ﷺ) disliked this because men are not to adorn themselves with gold or silver except for a ring, belt, or sword decoration of silver if not intended for adornment. What is prohibited for a man to wear or consume is also prohibited to put on or give to a boy. This is derived from Al-Durr al-Mukhtar. In Al-Alamgiriyyah: Anklets and bracelets are disliked for a male child. Thus, it is stated in Al-Sirajiyyah.
3 The statement: "O Thawban, buy for Fatimah a necklace of palm fiber and two bracelets of ivory": In Al-Alamgiriyyah: There is no issue for women to adorn their hair with beads of brass, copper, alum, iron, or similar for adornment, including bracelets.
Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: Use antimony (ithmid)4 for kohl, for it sharpens vision and promotes hair growth. He claimed the Prophet (ﷺ) had a kohl container and applied it every night, three times in each eye [Narrated by Tirmidhi].
Notes /
4 The statement: "Use antimony (ithmid)": In Al-Alamgiriyyah: There is no issue with antimony for men by consensus of the scholars. Black kohl is disliked by consensus if intended for adornment. They differed if not intended for adornment, with most saying it is not disliked. Thus, it is stated in Jawahir al-Akhlati.
Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated: The Prophet (ﷺ) used to apply antimony kohl before sleeping, three times in each eye, and said: The best treatments are oral medicine, nasal drops, cupping, 1 and walking. The best kohl is antimony, for it sharpens vision and promotes hair growth. The best days for cupping are the 17th, 19th, and 21st. When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was taken on the Night Journey, every group of angels he passed said: Use cupping [Narrated by Tirmidhi, who said: This is a good, unique hadith].
Notes /
1 The statement: "cupping": In Al-Alamgiriyyah: Cupping is recommended for everyone. Thus, it is stated in Al-Zahiriyyah. Cupping after the middle of the month on Saturday is very good and beneficial, and it is disliked before the middle of the month. Thus, it is stated in Al-Fatawa al-Attabiyyah.
Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated: The Prophet (ﷺ) prohibited men and women from entering bathhouses, then permitted men to enter them wearing a waist-wrapper [Narrated by Tirmidhi and Abu Dawud].
In Al-Kawkab al-Durri: The statement "then permitted men wearing a waist-wrapper" indicates the reason for the prohibition is exposing the private parts. Where there is no exposure, there is no prohibition. Thus, it is understood that bathhouses exclusive to women, where no men enter and all workers and attendants are women, are permissible for women 2 to enter without exposing themselves.
Notes /
2 The statement: "permissible for women to enter": In Al-Alamgiriyyah: There is no issue with women entering bathhouses exclusive to women due to common necessity, provided they wear a waist-wrapper. Thus, it is stated in Khazanat al-Muftin. Without a waist-wrapper, it is prohibited. Thus, it is stated in Al-Sirajiyyah. Texts indicate that, despite this permissibility under these conditions, women were prohibited to block the means, as they often do not feel shy among each other and expose themselves, even to strangers, not just relatives. A daughter with her mother or a servant girl rarely relaxes at home, let alone in a bathhouse. This is observed in many women’s bathhouses, especially in non-Arab lands, where only a rare woman covers herself. It is as if the Prophet (ﷺ) saw with the light of prophethood what would happen and closed this door. Where there is no exposure, there is no prohibition for women either.

Abu al-Malih narrated: Women from Hims came to Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), and she said: Where are you from? They said: From Sham. She said: Perhaps you are from the region where women enter bathhouses? They said: Yes. She said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: A woman who removes her clothes outside her husband’s house tears the veil between her and her Lord. Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should not enter a bathhouse without a waist-wrapper, nor let his wife enter a bathhouse, nor sit at a table where wine is circulated [Narrated by Tirmidhi and Nasai].

Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated from Maymunah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) woke up one morning distressed and said: Jibril promised to meet me last night but did not. By Allah, he never breaks his promise. Then he realized there was a puppy under his tent, so he ordered it to be removed. He took water in his hand and sprinkled the spot. When evening came, Jibril met him, and he said: You promised to meet me last night? Jibril said: Yes, but we do not enter a house with a dog or an image. That morning, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) ordered the killing of dogs, 1 even the small guard dog, but spared the large guard dog [Narrated by Muslim].
In Al-Musawwa: The killing of dogs was ordered early in Islam due to the widespread practice of keeping them, and people would not abandon this except through killing. It is said that Madinah was singled out for killing dogs because it was the destination of angels with revelation, and they do not enter a house with a dog. This was later abrogated.
In a narration by both [Bukhari and Muslim] from Abu Talhah, the Prophet (ﷺ) said: Angels do not enter a house 2 with a dog or images.
Bukhari narrated from Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (ﷺ) would not leave anything with crosses in his house without breaking it.
We say: 3 The narration of Jibril4 and similar reports are specific5 to non-demeaned images, as elaborated by Ibn al-Kamal.
I say: Their statements suggest the reason is either veneration or resemblance, with veneration being broader, as when the image is to the right, left, or at the place of prostration, there is no resemblance but veneration. If both veneration and resemblance are present, the dislike is stronger, hence the varying degrees. Jibril’s narration is based on veneration, as evidenced by other hadiths, so angels are prevented where images are venerated. Dislike in prayer due to veneration is stronger than due to angels’ non-entry, as veneration may be incidental. If an image is on a spread carpet, it is demeaned and does not prevent entry, but praying and prostrating on it is disliked due to veneration. It appears angels are not prevented by such incidental acts. In Al-Fath and Sharh Attab, if the image is behind or underfoot, prayer is not disliked, but keeping an image in the house is disliked per the hadith, suggesting angels are prevented even by demeaned images, which contradicts the specifying hadith. Thus, it is stated in Radd al-Muhtar.
Notes /
1 The statement: "ordered the killing of dogs": In Bazl al-Majhood: The order to kill dogs was abrogated by Jabir’s hadith in Muslim and others: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) ordered us to kill dogs, to the point that if a woman came from the desert with her dog, we killed it. Then the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) prohibited killing them.
2 The statement: "Angels do not enter a house": Scholars differed on whether angels of mercy are prevented by images on coins. Al-Nawawi affirmed it, while Iyadh negated it, saying the hadiths are specific. In Bahr, this is the apparent view of our scholars: what does not cause dislike in prayer is not disliked to keep. In Al-Fath and elsewhere, it is stated that small images are not disliked in the house. It is reported that Abu Hurairah had two flies on his ring, and if they prevented angels from entering, keeping them would be disliked, as it would make the place the worst of spots, as with demeaned images. This is clear from the hadith: “Or cut it into cushions and make it a spread.” In Al-Alamgiriyyah: Scholars differed on whether a head without a body is disliked to keep or pray near.
3 The statement: "We say": Derived from Al-Durr al-Mukhtar.
4 The statement: "Narration of Jibril": Refers to his statement to the Prophet (ﷺ): We do not enter a house with a dog or an image [Narrated by Muslim]. This addresses the objection that if the reason for dislike is the place where prayer occurs, and angels do not enter a house with images, making it the worst place, then images should be disliked even if demeaned, as “no image” is general in negation. If the reason is resembling idol worship, it is only disliked if in front or above. The response is that the primary reason is the first, while the second increases the degree of dislike. The generality of the text is specified to non-demeaned images, as per Ibn Hibban and Nasai: Jibril sought permission to enter upon the Prophet (ﷺ), who said: Enter. Jibril said: How can I enter when there is a curtain with images in your house? If you must, cut off their heads or make them cushions and spreads. However, if the image is on a spread at the place of prostration, it is disliked despite not preventing angels or resembling idol worship, as idol-worshippers do not prostrate on images but set them up and face them. It may be said that it resembles their worship during standing or bowing, or prostrating on it is veneration. Summarized from Al-Hilyah and Al-Bahr.
5 The statement: "specific to non-demeaned": Some Shafi’is and others considered keeping images in clothing or on items to be trodden or demeaned disliked, and disliked their presence in houses. Abu Hanifah, Malik, and Shafi’i said there is no issue with trodden or demeaned images, but others are disliked. Derived from Umdat al-Qari and Sharh Ma’ani al-Athar. In Al-Alamgiriyyah: Keeping images in houses or clothing outside prayer is of two types: those involving veneration are disliked, those involving degradation are not. Thus, an image on a spread carpet is not disliked, but on an upright carpet, it is. Thus, it is stated in Al-Muhit.
Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: Jibril came to me and said: I came to you last night, but I was prevented from entering because there were statues at the door, 1 a curtain with statues in the house, and a dog inside. Order the head of the statue in the house to be cut off so it resembles a tree, order the curtain to be cut and made into two cushions to be placed on the floor, and order the dog to be removed. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) did so [Narrated by Tirmidhi and Abu Dawud].
Notes /
1 The statement: "there were statues at the door": In Al-Durr al-Mukhtar and Radd al-Muhtar: It is prohibitively disliked to wear clothing with images of living beings or to have a statue above one’s head, in front, beside, or at the place of prostration, even on an upright cushion. There is disagreement if the statue is behind, with the stronger view being dislike. It is not disliked if underfoot or at the place of sitting, as it is demeaned, or if held in hand, as it is concealed by clothing or on a ring with an unclear design. In Al-Bahr: This implies dislike for clear images unless concealed in a bag, pouch, or another cloth, as approved by the author, or if the image is small with indistinguishable details when viewed standing with it on the ground, as noted by Al-Halabi, or if the head or face is cut off, or a vital organ is removed, or if it is of a non-living thing, as it is not worshipped.
Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated: She had placed a curtain with statues over her alcove. The Prophet (ﷺ) tore it down, and she made two cushions from it, 1 which were in the house for him to sit on [Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim].
Notes /
1 The statement: "made two cushions from it": In Fatawa Qadi Khan: It is disliked to pray with images in front, above, to the right, left, or on clothing. For a carpet, there are two narrations, with the correct one being that it is not disliked if one does not prostrate on the images. If the image is small or headless, there is no issue. Thus, it is stated in Al-Mirqat.

Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated: She bought a cushion with images. When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) saw it, he stood at the door and did not enter. She recognized displeasure on his face and said: O Messenger of Allah, I repent to Allah and His Messenger, what have I done wrong? The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: What is this cushion? She said: I bought it for you to sit or rest on. He said: The makers of these images will be punished on the Day of Resurrection and told: Bring to life what you created. He also said: Angels do not enter a house with images [Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim].
Al-Allamah Al-Ayni said: He reproached Aisha for saying it was for sitting or resting, indicating the dislike of using a curtain with images even after cutting it into a cushion. However, the previous hadiths suggest otherwise. I say: There is no conflict, as the lawgiver initially prohibited all images, then permitted those that are demeaned, as there is no fear of the ignorant venerating them, while the prohibition remains for those not demeaned.
Sa’id bin Abi Al-Hasan narrated: I was with Ibn Abbas when a man came and said: O Ibn Abbas, I earn my living through my craft, making these images. Ibn Abbas said: I will only tell you what I heard from the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). I heard him say: Whoever makes an image, Allah will punish him until he breathes life into it, which he will never do. The man was greatly distressed, and his face turned pale. Ibn Abbas said: Woe to you, if you must make them, then depict trees and things without souls [Narrated by Bukhari].
Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated: I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: Every image-maker will be in the Fire, and for every image he made, a soul will be created to punish him in Hell. Ibn Abbas said: If you must do it, make trees 1 and things without souls [Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim].
Notes /
1 The statement: "make trees": In Al-Mirqat: Trees and similar non-living things are not prohibited to make or profit from, according to the majority, except Mujahid, who considered fruit-bearing trees disliked. The majority’s evidence follows under the hadith on mimicking.
Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: The people with the severest punishment 1 on the Day of Resurrection are those who mimic 2 Allah’s creation [Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim].
Notes /
1 The statement: "severest punishment": In Radd al-Muhtar: This distinguishes between demeaned and non-demeaned images in possession, but making images is absolutely impermissible as it mimics Allah’s creation.
2 The statement: "mimic Allah’s creation": This explains the majority’s view limiting image-makers to those depicting living beings, as their creation cannot be attributed to human action literally or metaphorically, unlike plants or inanimate objects, where one might say, for example, someone grew a tree or made a ship. However, depicting what is worshipped besides Allah, even inanimate, like the sun or moon, should be prohibited. Thus, it is stated in Al-Mirqat.
Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: The people with the severest punishment on the Day of Resurrection are those who kill a prophet, are killed by a prophet, kill one of their parents, image-makers, and scholars who do not benefit from their knowledge [Narrated by Al-Bayhaqi in Shu’ab al-Iman].

Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: The people with the severest punishment in Allah’s sight are image-makers [Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim].

Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: A neck will emerge from the Fire on the Day of Resurrection with two eyes that see, two ears that hear, and a tongue that speaks, saying: I am tasked with three: every stubborn tyrant, everyone who calls upon a deity besides Allah, and image-makers [Narrated by Tirmidhi].
Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated: I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: Whoever fabricates a dream he did not see will be tasked with tying a knot between two barley grains, which he will never do. Whoever eavesdrops on people who dislike it or flee from him will have molten lead poured into his ears on the Day of Resurrection. Whoever makes an image will be punished and tasked with breathing life into it, which he will never do [Narrated by Bukhari].
Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: Allah, the Exalted, said: Who is more unjust than one who tries to create like My creation? Let them create a speck, a grain, or a barley seed [Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim].
Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated: When the Prophet (ﷺ) was ill, some of his wives mentioned a church called Maria, which Umm Salamah and Umm Habibah had visited in Abyssinia, describing its beauty and images. He raised his head and said: Those people, when a righteous man among them dies, build a mosque over his grave and depict those images. They are the worst of creation in Allah’s sight [Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim].
Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) would visit the house of some Ansar, but there was another house nearby, which troubled them. They said: O Messenger of Allah, you visit so-and-so’s house but not ours. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: Because there is a dog in your house. They said: But there is a cat in their house. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: A cat 1 is a beast [Narrated by Al-Dar Qutni].
Notes /
1 The statement: "A cat is a beast": Meaning a cat is a beast, not a devil like the impure dog. Thus, it is stated in Al-Mirqat.
Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) saw a man following a pigeon and said: A devil following a she-devil 2 [Narrated by Ahmad, Abu Dawud, Ibn Majah, and Al-Bayhaqi in Shu’ab al-Iman].
Notes /
2 The statement: "A devil following a she-devil": In Al-Durr al-Mukhtar and Radd al-Muhtar: Keeping pigeons is disliked if it harms people by sight or attraction. If it attracts pigeons, the owner should give them away, then buy or receive them as a gift. If they fly over rooftops, exposing Muslims’ private matters or breaking glass by throwing at them, the owner is disciplined and strictly prevented. If they persist, the pigeons are slaughtered. In Al-Wahbaniyyah, discipline and slaughter are obligatory, not limited to the above cases, likely based on their customs. Keeping them for familiarity is permissible.
Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated: During one of his expeditions, I hung a patterned cloth3 over the door. When he returned and saw it, I recognized displeasure on his face. He pulled it down, tore it, and said: Allah did not command us to clothe stones and clay [Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim].
Notes /
3 The statement: "hung a patterned cloth over the door": It was likely for adornment, not covering, hence the reproach. This is used as evidence against hanging wall coverings, which is a minor dislike, not prohibition. Thus, it is stated in Al-Mirqat. In Al-Alamgiriyyah, Shams al-Aimmah al-Sarakhsi said in Sharh al-Sir: There is no issue with covering house walls with felt if intended to ward off cold, or with straw to ward off heat. What is disliked is for adornment. Thus, it is stated in Al-Dhakhirah.
Buraydah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Prophet (ﷺ) said: Whoever plays with dice is as if he dyed his hand 1 in the flesh and blood of a pig [Narrated by Muslim].
Notes /
1 The statement: "as if he dyed his hand in the flesh and blood of a pig": Al-Nawawi said: This hadith is evidence for Shafi’i and the majority in prohibiting playing with dice, as are the following hadiths. Al-Mundhiri said: The majority of scholars hold that playing dice is prohibited, and some of our scholars cited consensus on its prohibition. Mirak said: As for chess, our school and the majority prohibit playing it absolutely. Shafi’i permitted it with valid conditions. Thus, it is stated in Al-Mirqat.
Abu Musa Al-Ash’ari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: Whoever plays with dice has disobeyed Allah and His Messenger [Narrated by Ahmad and Abu Dawud].
Allah, Exalted and Glorified, said: O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule another people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule other women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one’s] faith. And whoever does not repent, then it is those who are the wrongdoers. [Al-Hujurat: 11]
1 His statement: “let not a people ridicule”: Know that joking is lighthearted interaction with others without causing harm. If it reaches the point of harm, it becomes mockery. [As stated in Al-Mirqat]2 His statement: “and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames”: Some scholars said that the nicknames meant here are those the person dislikes or that imply criticism. Nicknames that have become like proper names, such as Al-A’mash or Al-A’raj and the like, are permissible if the person does not dislike them. Nicknames that bring praise and are true are not disliked, such as Abu Bakr being called Atiq, Umar called Al-Faruq, Uthman called Dhu An-Nurayn, Ali called Abu Turab, Khalid called the Sword of Allah, and so forth. [As stated in Al-Khazin]
Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: Allah, the Exalted, has prohibited wine, gambling, and the drum. 2 He said: Every intoxicant is prohibited. It was said: The drum refers to the tambourine [Narrated by Al-Bayhaqi in Shu’ab al-Iman].
Notes /
2 The statement: "the drum": Mirak said: It refers to the tambourine of amusement, not the drums of warriors or pilgrims. Thus, it is stated in Al-Mirqat.
Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated: The Prophet (ﷺ) prohibited wine, gambling, the drum, and ghubayra, a drink made by Abyssinians from sorghum, called sukrukah [Narrated by Abu Dawud].
Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Chess3 is the gambling of non-Arabs.
Notes /
3 The statement: "Chess is the gambling of non-Arabs": Based on these hadiths, in Al-Durr al-Mukhtar: Playing dice is prohibitively disliked, as is chess. Shafi’i permitted it. In Al-Mirqat: Shafi’i’s evidence is that it may aid in understanding war tactics and enemy strategies. I say: This reasoning is weak, and this interpretation is poor given the texts condemning it and the lack of evidence of the Prophet’s companions playing it. Betting on chess is unanimously prohibited.
Ibn Shihab narrated that Abu Musa Al-Ash’ari (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Only a sinner plays chess.
Abu Musa Al-Ash’ari (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked about playing chess and said: It is from falsehood, and Allah does not love falsehood [Narrated by Al-Bayhaqi in Shu’ab al-Iman].
