And the words of Allah Almighty: "Then depart from the place from where [all] the people depart" (Al-Baqarah 2:199).
Muhammad ibn Abi Bakr al-Thaqafi narrated that he asked Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) while they were traveling from Mina to Arafah, "What did you do on this day with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)?" He replied, "Some among us would recite the Talbiyah, and no one objected to it, while others would recite Takbir, and no one objected to it." [Agreed upon]
Notes /
1 The statement: "Some would recite Takbir" indicates that the pilgrim’s primary focus on that day is the remembrance of Allah after having recited the Talbiyah once or twice. However, the Talbiyah remains superior and more in line with the Sunnah. As stated in Al-Luma’at, Imam al-Nawawi said: "This refutes those who claim the Talbiyah should be discontinued after Fajr on the day of Arafah." The authentic practice from the Prophet (ﷺ) is that he did not stop the Talbiyah until he stoned Jamarat al-Aqabah, which is the position of Abu Hanifah and al-Shafi’i.
Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "I slaughtered my sacrifice here, and all of Mina is a place of slaughter. So slaughter wherever you are in Mina. I stood here, and all of Arafah is a place of standing. I stood here, and all of Muzdalifah is a place of standing." [Narrated by Muslim]

1 The commands in this Hadith indicate permissibility, though following the Sunnah (as demonstrated by the Prophet) remains superior. (Al-Maraqi)

Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "All of Arafah is a place of standing, all of Mina is a place of slaughter, all of Muzdalifah is a place of standing, and all the mountain passes of Makkah are pathways and places of slaughter." [Narrated by Abu Dawud and al-Daraqutni]
Notes /
1 "All the mountain passes of Makkah are pathways" means one may enter Makkah from any route, though entering from Thaniyyat Kada’ is preferable. (Al-Maraqi) 2 "Pathways and places of slaughter" means sacrifices may be performed anywhere within the sacred precincts, as the objective is to remove hardship. However, Mina is superior for Hajj sacrifices, and Makkah (particularly al-Marwah) is preferable for Umrah sacrifices. (Al-Maraqi, Fath al-Qadir)

Amr ibn Abdullah ibn Safwan narrated from an uncle of his named Yazid ibn Shayban, who said: "We were standing at a distant place in Arafah, far from where the Imam stood. Ibn Mirba' al-Ansari came to us and said: 'I am the Messenger of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) to you. He commands you: "Stand at your places of ritual, for you are following the legacy of your father Ibrahim."'" [Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud, al-Nasa'i, and Ibn Majah]
Notes /
1 "Stand at your places of ritual" means adhere to your traditional sites of worship, inherited from Ibrahim. Do not belittle your standing place simply because it is far from the Imam's position. (Al-Luma'at)

To Him belongs the dominion, and to Him belongs all praise, and He is over all things competent.'" [Narrated by al-Tirmidhi]
In Malik's narration from Talhah ibn Ubaydullah, it ends at: "There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah alone, without partner."

I call you to witness that I have forgiven them.' The angels say, 'O Lord, so-and-so is known for sinning, and so-and-so and so-and-so?' Allah says, 'I have forgiven them.' The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'There is no day on which more people are freed from the Fire than the day of Arafah.'" [Narrated in Sharh al-Sunnah]
Notes /
1 "I have forgiven them" - Hajj wipes away previous sins. (Al-Maraqi) We will discuss this further when commenting on Ibn Majah's narration.
1 The statement: Have someone else witness this, An-Nawawi said: It indicates that one should equalize among children in gifts. If some are favored or given to some and not others, Shafi’i, Malik, and Abu Hanifah said it is disliked but not prohibited, and the gift is valid. Tawus, Urwah, Mujahid, Ath-Thawri, Ahmad, Ishaq, and Dawud said it is prohibited. They cited the narration, “I do not witness injustice,” and other wordings of the narration. Shafi’i and his supporters cited, Have someone else witness this, saying: If it were prohibited or invalid, he would not have said this.

Abbas ibn Mirdas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) prayed for his ummah on the evening of Arafah for forgiveness. He was answered: "I have forgiven them except for the wrongdoers, for I will take the right of the oppressed from them." The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "O Lord, if You will, grant the oppressed Paradise and forgive the wrongdoer." But he received no response that evening. The next morning at Muzdalifah, he repeated the supplication and was granted what he asked for. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) smiled, and Abu Bakr and Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) said: "May our fathers and mothers be sacrificed for you! This is not a time when you usually smile. What made you smile - may Allah keep you smiling?" He replied: "When the enemy of Allah, Iblis, learned that Allah had accepted my supplication and forgiven my ummah, he took dust and began pouring it on his head, crying out in despair. His distress made me smile." [Narrated by Ibn Majah; al-Bayhaqi narrated something similar in Kitab al-Ba'th wa al-Nushur]
Notes /
1 "And forgave my ummah" - Does Hajj expiate major sins? Some scholars say yes, like Harbi who embraced Islam, citing this hadith. Al-Bayhaqi said this hadith has many supporting narrations mentioned in Shu'ab al-Iman. If authenticated by these narrations, it would be strong evidence. Otherwise, Allah says: "And He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills" (4:48). Wrongdoing between people is less severe than shirk. Ibn al-Mubarak narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Allah has forgiven the people of Arafah and Muzdalifah and guaranteed to settle their debts." Umar stood up and asked: "O Messenger of Allah, is this exclusively for us?" He replied: "For you and those who come after you until the Day of Judgment." Umar exclaimed: "How abundant is the goodness of our Lord!" The full discussion is in Fath al-Bari, which cites additional hadiths. In summary, while Ibn Majah's hadith is weak, it has supporting evidence that strengthens it, and the Qur'anic verse also supports it. Other evidence includes the hadith in Bukhari: "Whoever performs Hajj without obscenity or wickedness returns as sinless as the day his mother bore him," and the hadith in Muslim: "Islam wipes away what came before it." Fath al-Bari seems to lean toward the view that even rights between people may be forgiven, as held by Imam al-Sarakhsi in Sharh al-Siyar al-Kabir and extended by some scholars to include martyrs. Al-Munawi attributed this view to al-Qurtubi. However, some scholars like Abu Hanifa held that only sins against Allah (not human rights) are forgiven, unless the wronged party is compensated. Al-'Iyadh said: "The consensus of Ahl al-Sunnah is that major sins require repentance, and no one claims that financial obligations are waived." In summary, as stated in Al-Bahr al-Ra'iq: "The matter is speculative - we cannot definitively say Hajj expiates major sins against Allah, let alone human rights." Al-Bayhaqi cautioned: "No Muslim should deceive himself into thinking Hajj automatically settles all accounts, for disobedience is ominous and opposing the Almighty in His commands is grave." However, one may optimistically hope for forgiveness for those who perform an accepted Hajj with sincere effort. But who can be certain about this for themselves or others? Even the righteous cannot be certain. The balanced approach is to remain between hope and fear. (Al-Durr al-Mukhtar, Radd al-Muhtar, Al-Maraqi - summarized)
