Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated: “The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) would fast so much that we would say, ‘He does not break his fast,’ and he would break his fast so much that we would say, ‘He does not fast.’ I never saw the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) complete a month of fasting except Ramadan, and I never saw him fast more in any month than in Sha’ban. He would fast all of Sha’ban 1 except a little.” [Agreed upon]
Notes /
1 The statement: “He would fast all of Sha’ban.” In Fath al-Qadir, it is said: “Fasting all of Sha’ban and connecting it to Ramadan is good.” The recommended types of fasting are: fasting in Muharram, fasting in Rajab, fasting in Sha’ban, and fasting on the day of Ashura (the 10th of Muharram), according to the majority of scholars and the Companions. This is mentioned in Al-Zahiriyyah and Al-Alamkiriyyah. If someone asks, “Why did the Prophet (ﷺ) specifically fast more in Sha’ban?” The answer is: Because the deeds of people are raised to Allah in Sha’ban. In Al-Nasa’i, it is narrated from Usamah that he said: “O Messenger of Allah, I notice that you fast more in Sha’ban than in any other month.” The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “That is a month in which deeds are raised to the Lord of the worlds, and I love for my deeds to be raised while I am fasting.” This is mentioned by Al-Ayni in ‘Umdat al-Qari.

The hadith about the crescent moon has been mentioned in the chapter on sighting the crescent.
Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “The best fasting after Ramadan is fasting in the month of Allah, Muharram, and the best prayer after the obligatory prayers is the night prayer.” 2 [Narrated by Muslim]
Notes /
2 The statement: “The night prayer.” I say: It is better than the daytime prayer, as mentioned in Al-Jawharah and Nur al-Idah. The Qur’an and hadiths clearly emphasize its virtue and encourage it. In Al-Bahr, it is said: “Among them is what is in Sahih Muslim, where it is narrated: ‘The best prayer after the obligatory prayers is the night prayer.’” This is mentioned in Rad al-Muhtar.

Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: “I never saw the Prophet (ﷺ) prioritize fasting any day over others except the day of Ashura 1 and the month of Ramadan.” [Agreed upon]
Notes /
1 The statement: “The day of Ashura.” Shaykh Ibn Al-Humam said: “Fasting on the day of Ashura is recommended, as long as it is not mistaken for an obligation.” This is mentioned in Al-Mirqat. There is a difference of opinion regarding its ruling in early Islam. Abu Hanifah said: “It was obligatory, but when the fasting of Ramadan was prescribed, it became recommended.” This is mentioned in ‘Umdat al-Qari.
Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that when the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) arrived in Madinah, he found the Jews fasting on the day of Ashura. He asked them, “What is this day you are fasting?” They replied, “This is a great day on which Allah saved Musa and his people and drowned Pharaoh and his people. Musa fasted it out of gratitude, so we fast it.” The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “We are more deserving of Musa than you,” so he fasted it and commanded others to fast it. [Agreed upon]
Jabir ibn Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: “The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) would command us to fast the day of Ashura, encourage us to do so, and check on us regarding it. When Ramadan was made obligatory, he neither commanded us nor forbade us from fasting it, nor did he check on us regarding it.” [Narrated by Muslim]
Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) said about fasting the day of Ashura: “Fast it, and fast a day before it 2 or a day after it, and do not resemble the Jews.” [Narrated by Al-Tahawi]
Notes /
2 The statement: “Fast a day before it...” Shaykh Ibn Al-Humam said: “Fasting the day of Ashura is recommended, and it is recommended to fast a day before it or a day after it. If one fasts it alone, it is disliked due to resembling the Jews.” Ahmad narrated: “Fast the day of Ashura, differ from the Jews, and fast a day before it and a day after it.” The apparent meaning is that “and” means “or,” as indicated by this hadith, because differing from the Jews is achieved by either. Al-Shafi’i took the apparent meaning of Ahmad’s narration, so they combine all three. This is taken from Al-Mirqat.
Umm Al-Fadl bint Al-Harith (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated: “Some people argued in her presence on the day of Arafah about whether the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was fasting. Some said he was fasting, and others said he was not. She sent him a cup of milk while he was standing on his camel, and he drank it.” 1 [Agreed upon]
Notes /
1 The statement: “He drank it.” Shaykh Ibn Al-Humam said: “Fasting on the day of Arafah is recommended for non-pilgrims. For pilgrims, if fasting weakens them from standing and supplicating, it is recommended to break the fast. Some say it is disliked, but this is a dislike of a less preferred action (karahah tanzih), as it may detract from more important acts at that time.” This is mentioned in Al-Mirqat.

Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated: “There were four practices the Prophet (ﷺ) never abandoned: fasting on Ashura, fasting the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah, 2 fasting three days every month, and praying two rak’ahs before Fajr.” [Narrated by Al-Nasa’i]
Notes /
2 The statement: “The first ten days.” In Al-Alamkiriyyah, it is said: “It is recommended to fast the first nine days of Dhul-Hijjah.” This is mentioned in Al-Siraj al-Wahaj.

Some of the wives of the Prophet (ﷺ) reported that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to fast nine days of Dhul-Hijjah, the day of Ashura, and three days of every month, specifically Monday and Thursday. 3 [Narrated by Nasa’i] Abu Dawud narrated something similar.
Notes /
3 The statement: "Monday..." In Rad al-Muhtar, it is said: "Among the recommended acts is fasting on Mondays and Thursdays."

Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that a man came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and asked, "How do you fast?" The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) became angry at his question. When Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) saw his anger, he said, "We are pleased with Allah as our Lord, Islam as our religion, and Muhammad as our Prophet. We seek refuge in Allah from the anger of Allah and His Messenger." Umar kept repeating these words until the Prophet’s anger subsided. Then Umar said, "O Messenger of Allah, what about someone who fasts every day of the year?" The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "He has not fasted nor broken his fast," 4 or he said, "He did not fast nor break his fast." Umar asked, "What about someone who fasts two days and breaks his fast on the third day?" The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Can anyone do that?" Umar asked, "What about someone who fasts one day and breaks his fast the next day?" The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "That is the fast of Dawud." Umar asked, "What about someone who fasts one day and breaks his fast for two days?" The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "I wish I were given the strength to do that." Then the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "Fasting three days of every month and Ramadan to Ramadan is like fasting the entire year. Fasting the day of Arafah, I hope Allah will expiate the sins of the previous year and the coming year. Fasting the day of Ashura, I hope Allah will expiate the sins of the previous year." [Narrated by Muslim]
Notes /
4 The statement: "He has not fasted nor broken his fast." Shaykh Ibn al-Humam said: "Fasting the entire year is disliked because it weakens a person or becomes a habit, and worship is based on going against one’s habits." This is mentioned in Al-Mirqah.

Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said to him, "O Abdullah, have I not been informed that you fast during the day and stand in prayer at night?" I said, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "Do not do that. Fast and break your fast, stand in prayer and sleep, for your body has a right over you, your eyes have a right over you, your wife has a right over you, and your guest has a right over you. Fasting three days of every month is like fasting the entire year. Fast three days of every month and recite the Quran once every month." 1 I said, "I am capable of more than that." He said, "The best fast is the fast of Dawud: fasting one day and breaking the fast the next. Recite the Quran once every seven nights and do not exceed that." [Agreed upon]
In a narration by Tirmidhi, the Prophet (ﷺ) said, "He has not understood who recites the Quran in less than three days."

Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "Whoever fasts Ramadan and then follows it with six days of Shawwal, 1 it is as if he fasted the entire year." [Narrated by Muslim]
Notes /
1 The statement: "Then follows it..." In Alamgiriyyah, it is said: "Fasting six days of Shawwal is disliked according to Abu Hanifah, whether done consecutively or separately. According to Abu Yusuf, it is disliked if done consecutively but not if done separately. However, most later scholars saw no issue with it." This is mentioned in Bahr al-Raiq. The correct view is that there is no harm in it. This is mentioned in Muhit al-Sarakhsi.

Abu Sa’id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) forbade fasting on the days of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. [Agreed upon]
In a narration by Muslim from Ziyad ibn Jubayr, it is reported that a man came to Ibn Umar and said, "I vowed to fast a day, 2 and it coincided with Eid al-Adha or Eid al-Fitr." Ibn Umar said, "Allah has commanded the fulfillment of vows, but the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) forbade fasting on this day." [Agreed upon]
Notes /
2 The statement: "I vowed..." Even if one vows to fast on the prohibited days or to fast the entire year, it is valid according to the preferred opinion. They differentiated between vows and initiating fasting, as initiating fasting is sinful while the vow itself is an act of obedience. Thus, it is valid, but one must break the fast on the prohibited days to avoid sin and make up for it later to fulfill the obligation. This is indicated by this hadith. The meaning is that it can be made up for, thus fulfilling the command and avoiding the prohibition. This is mentioned in Al-Durr al-Mukhtar and Rad al-Muhtar, summarized from them.

Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated, "I rarely 1 saw the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) breaking his fast on a Friday." [Narrated by Ibn Majah] Tirmidhi and Nasa’i narrated something similar. Tirmidhi said, "This hadith is hasan gharib." It was authenticated by Ibn Hibban, Ibn Abd al-Barr, and Ibn Hazm.
Notes /
1 The statement: "Rarely..." In Alamgiriyyah, it is said: "Fasting on Friday alone is recommended according to the general opinion, like Monday and Thursday." This is mentioned in Bahr al-Raiq. In Al-Urf al-Shadhi, it is said: "Fasting on Friday is recommended as mentioned in Al-Durr al-Mukhtar. However, the commentators differed on its recommendation. In my opinion, if there is a fear of misunderstanding, one should not fast; otherwise, it is recommended. This reconciles the juristic and hadith narrations."

Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "Whoever fasts on a Friday, Allah will write for him the reward of ten days, the likes of which are not found in this world." [Narrated by Bayhaqi in Shu’ab al-Iman] Yahya said, "I heard Malik say, 'I have not heard any scholar or jurist whom people follow prohibit fasting on Friday. Fasting on Friday is good, and I have seen some scholars fast on it, and I think they preferred it.'"
Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "Do not single out the night of Friday 2 for standing in prayer among all the nights." [Narrated by Muslim]

1 The statement: "Salamah ibn Qaysar." What is found in the copies of Mishkat: "Salamah ibn Qays" is a mistake. The correct version is "Salamah ibn Qaysar." This is mentioned in Al-Mirqah.

Notes /
2 The statement: "Do not fast..." The prohibition here is for discouragement according to the majority. This is mentioned by Al-Tibi. In Al-Durr al-Mukhtar, it is said: "The disliked act is discouraged, like fasting on Ashura alone or Saturday alone."

Notes /
1 The statement: "And do not invalidate…" Some said: As for making up for missed fasts, it is not mentioned in any of the chains of the hadith of Abu Juhaifah, except that the principle is clear, and the Lawgiver approved it. If making up for missed fasts were obligatory, it would have been clarified, given the need for clarification. The response is that making up for missed fasts is established in other hadiths, which we will mention now. The statement that it is not mentioned in any of the chains of the hadith of Abu Juhaifah does not negate the obligation of making up for missed fasts, because whoever initiates an act of worship is obliged to complete it; otherwise, they invalidate their deed. Allah said: "And do not invalidate your deeds" (Muhammad: 33). This is mentioned in ‘Umdat al-Qari.
2 The statement: "Monasticism..." This verse was revealed to criticize them for not fulfilling what they had committed themselves to in terms of acts of worship that were not prescribed for them. Similarly, a prescribed act must be protected from invalidation. This is mentioned in Al-Mirqah.

Allah the Almighty said: "And do not invalidate your deeds" 1 (Muhammad: 33). And He said: "But monasticism, 2 they invented it; We did not prescribe it for them except [that they did so] seeking the approval of Allah. But they did not observe it with due observance" (Al-Hadid: 27).

Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) entered her house one day and asked, "Do you have anything to eat?" She said, "No." He said, "Then I will fast." 3 Another day, he came, and she said, "O Messenger of Allah, we have been given some hais (a mixture of dates, butter, and cheese)." He said, "Show it to me. I had started the day fasting.” So he ate." 4 [Narrated by Muslim] Al-Shamani 5 added: Nasa’i added, "But I will fast another day in its place." Abd al-Haqq authenticated this addition.
Notes /
3 The statement: "Then I will fast" indicates the permissibility of initiating voluntary fasting during the day. This is mentioned in Al-Mirqah and Al-Durr al-Mukhtar.
4 The statement: "He ate" In Al-Urf al-Shadhi, it is said: As for the issue of breaking the fast, the apparent narration permits breaking it due to an excuse, and hospitality is an excuse for both the guest and the host. In Al-Kanz, in a narration from Abu Hanifah, it is permissible to break the fast without an excuse. Similarly, in Muntaqa al-Hakim al-Shahid, reconciling the narrations, breaking the fast without an excuse is permissible but not commendable. My belief is that the narration of Muntaqa is more correct. This is mentioned in Fath al-Qadir. In Al-Durr al-Mukhtar, it is said: The Prophet (ﷺ) did not break a voluntary fast without an excuse in one narration, which is the correct one. In another narration, it is permissible on the condition that one intends to make up for it, and this was chosen by Kamal, Taj al-Shari’ah, and Sadr al-Shari’ah in Al-Wiqayah and its commentary.
5 The statement: "Al-Shamani said..." This is mentioned in Al-Mirqah and Al-Binayah.

Al-Zuhri reported from Urwah from Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that she said, "Hafsah and I were fasting, and some food we desired was presented to us, so we ate from it. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came, and Hafsah, being her father’s daughter, rushed to him and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, we were fasting, but some food we desired was presented to us, so we ate from it.' He said, 'Fast another day in its place.'" [Narrated by Tirmidhi] Abu Dawud and Nasa’i narrated it from Zamail, the freed slave of Urwah, from Urwah, from Aisha. Muhammad narrated it from Malik from Al-Zuhri, and he said, "This is the ruling for whoever fasts voluntarily and then breaks the fast; they must make up for it. This is the opinion of Abu Hanifah and the majority before us." Tirmidhi said, "Some scholars among the companions of the Prophet (ﷺ) and others held this opinion, requiring making up for the fast if it is broken. This is the opinion of Malik ibn Anas."
Notes /
1 The statement: "Narrated by Tirmidhi, etc." Shaykh Ibn al-Humam said: Tirmidhi weakened it because Al-Zuhri did not hear it from Urwah, and Bukhari weakened it because Zamail’s hearing from Urwah is unknown. We say: Bukhari’s statement is based on the condition of knowing that, but the preferred view is that knowing they were contemporaries is sufficient, as mentioned multiple times. Even if we accept its weakening and Tirmidhi’s weakening, it is limited to this chain. This would only be a problem if there were no other chains, but Ibn Hibban narrated it in his Sahih from another chain from Jarir ibn Hazim from Yahya ibn Sa’id from Amrah from Aisha. Ibn Abi Shaybah narrated it from another chain from Khasaif from Sa’id ibn Jubayr that Aisha and Hafsah... Al-Tabarani narrated it in his Mu’jam from another chain from Khasaif from Ikrimah from Ibn Abbas that Aisha and Hafsah... Al-Bazzar narrated it from another chain from Hammad ibn Walid from Ubaydullah ibn Umar from Nafi’ from Ibn Umar... Al-Tabarani narrated it from another chain in Al-Awsat from Musa ibn Harun from Muhammad ibn Mihran al-Jammal, who mentioned it from Muhammad ibn Abi Salamah al-Makki from Muhammad ibn Amruyah from Umm Salamah from Abu Hurairah... Thus, this hadith is firmly established, and even if every chain were weak, their multiplicity and frequency establish it. This also establishes that the unknown narrator in Al-Zuhri’s narration, as Tirmidhi attributed it to him, is trustworthy and reported the reality. How much more so when some of its chains are reliable. This is mentioned in ‘Umdat al-Qari.
2 The statement: "Before us" It is narrated that making up for missed fasts is obligatory according to Abu Bakr, Umar, Ali, Ibn Abbas, Jabir ibn Abdullah, Aisha, Umm Salamah, Hasan al-Basri, Sa’id ibn Jubayr in one opinion, Abu Hanifah, Malik, Abu Yusuf, and Muhammad. This is mentioned in ‘Umdat al-Qari.

Al-Muzani reported from Al-Shafi’i from Sufyan from Talhah ibn Yahya from his aunt Aisha bint Talhah from Aisha, the wife of the Prophet (ﷺ), that she said, "The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) entered upon me, and I said to him, 'O Messenger of Allah, we have saved some hais for you.' He said, 'I intended to fast, but bring it to me, and I will fast another day in its place.'" [Narrated by Al-Tahawi] The author of Al-Urf al-Shadhi said, "The chain is extremely authentic." Al-Bayhaqi narrated it in his Sunan al-Kubra from the chain of Al-Tahawi, and in his book Al-Ma’rifah as well. Nasa’i narrated it in Al-Kubra, and Al-Daraqutni narrated it in his Sunan.
Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) entered upon Hafsah and Aisha while they were fasting, then left and returned to find them eating. He said, "Were you not fasting?" They said, "Yes, but we were presented with this food, and we desired it, so we ate from it." He said, "Fast another day in its place." [Narrated by Nasa’i] In the chain is Khattab ibn al-Qasim and Khasaif. Ibn al-Qattan said, "Khattab is trustworthy," as stated by Ibn Ma’in and Abu Zur’ah. Abu Dawud, Yahya ibn Ma’in, Abu Zur’ah, and Al-‘Ijli said, "Khasaif is trustworthy." Ibn Ma’in said, "He is reliable," and also said, "There is no harm in him."

Anas ibn Sirin reported that he fasted on the day of Arafah but became extremely thirsty, so he broke his fast. He asked several companions of the Prophet (ﷺ), and they instructed him to fast another day in its place. [Narrated by Ibn Abi Shaybah] The author of Al-Jawhar al-Naqi said, "This chain meets the conditions of the two Shaykhs except for Al-Taymi, but the authors of the four books narrated from him, and Ibn Sa’d, Ibn Sufyan, and Al-Daraqutni authenticated him." Al-Tahawi narrated something similar.
Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that he informed his companions that he was fasting, then came out to them with his head dripping. They said, "Were you not fasting?" He said, "Yes, but a slave girl of mine passed by me, and I desired her, so I had intercourse with her. She was beautiful, and I desired her. I will fast another day in its place." [Narrated by Al-Tahawi]
Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that a man from the companions of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) prepared food and invited the Prophet (ﷺ) and some of his companions. When the food was brought, one of them declined, and the Prophet (ﷺ) asked, "What is wrong with you?" He said, "I am fasting." The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Your brother has gone to trouble for you and prepared food, and you say you are fasting? Eat and fast another day in its place." [Narrated by Al-Daraqutni and Al-Tayalisi] In a narration by Bukhari from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), he said, "The Prophet (ﷺ) entered upon Umm Sulaym, and she brought him dates and butter. He said, 'Return your butter to its container and your dates to their container, for I am fasting.' Then he went to a corner of the house and prayed a non-obligatory prayer, after which he supplicated for Umm Sulaym and her household." In a narration by Muslim from Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him), the Prophet (ﷺ) said, "When one of you is invited to food while fasting, let him say, 'I am fasting.'" In another narration, he said, "When one of you is invited, let him accept. If he is fasting, let him pray, and if he is not fasting, let him eat."
Notes /
2 The statement: "Eat, etc." In Al-Durr al-Mukhtar, it is said: Hospitality is an excuse for both the guest and the host if the host is someone who would not be satisfied with mere attendance and would be offended by the guest not eating. Otherwise, it is not an excuse. This is the correct view in the school.

Umm Umara bint Ka’b (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) entered upon her, and she offered him food. He said to her, "Eat." She said, "I am fasting." Buraydah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that Bilal entered upon the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) while they were having lunch. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Come and eat, O Bilal." Do you not know, O Bilal, that the bones of a fasting person glorify Allah, and the angels seek forgiveness for them as long as others eat in their presence?"
