Breaking a Voluntary Fast
Volume 4 · Fasting

Do not render your deeds void. If a voluntary fast is broken, its qada (compensation) becomes obligatory. It is stated: In the times of worship, if someone performs any (voluntary) act of worship, it is obligatory for them to complete it because they have initiated it. If they do not complete this act of worship, it is as if they have rendered the act and the worship invalid. Allah, the Exalted, has instructed, 'And do not render your deeds void.' (Surah Muhammad, 47:33) You should not render your deeds (and acts) invalid. Therefore, if someone keeps a voluntary fast and breaks it for some reason, it becomes obligatory for them to make up that fast in another voluntary fast. This is because fasting is not prohibited, and there are hadiths mentioned in this context which establish that if a voluntary fast is broken for some reason, its qada becomes obligatory.

And Allah, the Exalted, says: 'And monasticism which they invented, We did not prescribe for them except [as a means for] seeking the approval of Allah. But they did not observe it with due observance.' (Surah Al-Hadid, 57:27) And they invented monasticism (abstaining from social interaction, marriage, and pleasures, etc.), which you did not make obligatory for them, but they adopted it seeking the pleasure of Allah. However, when they did not fully adhere to it (did not properly maintain it).

It is stated in Al-Mirqat that this verse was revealed about those Christian monks who, for the sake of Allah's pleasure, imposed certain practices upon themselves and adhered to them. From this, it is understood that it is obligatory to prevent one's deeds from becoming invalid. Therefore, when someone imposes a voluntary act of worship upon themselves, it becomes obligatory to complete it. Essentially, if they abandon it, the act of worship becomes invalid, and they are warned against it. Hence, if a voluntary fast is started and then broken for some reason, its qada becomes obligatory so that the deed does not become invalid.

It is evident from the aforementioned discussion that making something obligatory or necessary for the sake of Allah’s pleasure, which was not originally so, is considered a praiseworthy innovation (bid‘ah hasanah), for which reward is obtained, such as completing parts of the Holy Quran, maintaining the positions of bowing and prostration, organizing the study of Hadith and jurisprudence, and establishing gatherings for the recitation of Fatiha for the deceased (for the purpose of conveying reward), etc. However, it should be clear that one should not innovate something and then consider it obligatory for the sake of obtaining reward. It should be clear that in our religion, monasticism, which involves renouncing the world, is prohibited. If a voluntary fast is broken, its qada’ (compensation) becomes obligatory.

The First Hadith

2986

Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) entered her house one day and asked, "Do you have anything to eat?" She said, "No." He said, "Then I will fast." (3) Another day, he came, and she said, "O Messenger of Allah, we have been given some hais (a mixture of dates, butter, and cheese)." He said, "Show it to me. I had started the day fasting.” So he ate." (4) [Narrated by Muslim] Al-Shamani (5) added: Nasa’i added, "But I will fast another day in its place." Abd al-Haqq authenticated this addition.

(3) The statement: "Then I will fast" indicates the permissibility of initiating voluntary fasting during the day. This is mentioned in Al-Mirqah and Al-Durr al-Mukhtar.

(4) The statement: "He ate" In Al-Urf al-Shadhi, it is said: As for the issue of breaking the fast, the apparent narration permits breaking it due to an excuse, and hospitality is an excuse for both the guest and the host. In Al-Kanz, in a narration from Abu Hanifah, it is permissible to break the fast without an excuse. Similarly, in Muntaqa al-Hakim al-Shahid, reconciling the narrations, breaking the fast without an excuse is permissible but not commendable. My belief is that the narration of Muntaqa is more correct. This is mentioned in Fath al-Qadir. In Al-Durr al-Mukhtar, it is said: The Prophet (ﷺ) did not break a voluntary fast without an excuse in one narration, which is the correct one. In another narration, it is permissible on the condition that one intends to make up for it, and this was chosen by Kamal, Taj al-Shari’ah, and Sadr al-Shari’ah in Al-Wiqayah and its commentary.

(5) The statement: "Al-Shamani said..." This is mentioned in Al-Mirqah and Al-Binayah.

Al-Zuhri reported from Urwah from Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that she said, "Hafsah and I were fasting, and some food we desired was presented to us, so we ate from it. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came, and Hafsah, being her father’s daughter, rushed to him and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, we were fasting, but some food we desired was presented to us, so we ate from it.' He said, 'Fast another day in its place.'" [Narrated by Tirmidhi] Abu Dawud and Nasa’i narrated it from Zamail, the freed slave of Urwah, from Urwah, from Aisha. Muhammad narrated it from Malik from Al-Zuhri, and he said, "This is the ruling for whoever fasts voluntarily and then breaks the fast; they must make up for it. This is the opinion of Abu Hanifah and the majority before us." Tirmidhi said, "Some scholars among the companions of the Prophet (ﷺ) and others held this opinion, requiring making up for the fast if it is broken. This is the opinion of Malik ibn Anas."

(1) The statement: "Narrated by Tirmidhi, etc." Shaykh Ibn al-Humam said: Tirmidhi weakened it because Al-Zuhri did not hear it from Urwah, and Bukhari weakened it because Zamail’s hearing from Urwah is unknown. We say: Bukhari’s statement is based on the condition of knowing that, but the preferred view is that knowing they were contemporaries is sufficient, as mentioned multiple times. Even if we accept its weakening and Tirmidhi’s weakening, it is limited to this chain. This would only be a problem if there were no other chains, but Ibn Hibban narrated it in his Sahih from another chain from Jarir ibn Hazim from Yahya ibn Sa’id from Amrah from Aisha. Ibn Abi Shaybah narrated it from another chain from Khasaif from Sa’id ibn Jubayr that Aisha and Hafsah... Al-Tabarani narrated it in his Mu’jam from another chain from Khasaif from Ikrimah from Ibn Abbas that Aisha and Hafsah... Al-Bazzar narrated it from another chain from Hammad ibn Walid from Ubaydullah ibn Umar from Nafi’ from Ibn Umar... Al-Tabarani narrated it from another chain in Al-Awsat from Musa ibn Harun from Muhammad ibn Mihran al-Jammal, who mentioned it from Muhammad ibn Abi Salamah al-Makki from Muhammad ibn Amruyah from Umm Salamah from Abu Hurairah... Thus, this hadith is firmly established, and even if every chain were weak, their multiplicity and frequency establish it. This also establishes that the unknown narrator in Al-Zuhri’s narration, as Tirmidhi attributed it to him, is trustworthy and reported the reality. How much more so when some of its chains are reliable. This is mentioned in ‘Umdat al-Qari.

(2) The statement: "Before us" It is narrated that making up for missed fasts is obligatory according to Abu Bakr, Umar, Ali, Ibn Abbas, Jabir ibn Abdullah, Aisha, Umm Salamah, Hasan al-Basri, Sa’id ibn Jubayr in one opinion, Abu Hanifah, Malik, Abu Yusuf, and Muhammad. This is mentioned in ‘Umdat al-Qari.

And Abu Dawud and Nasa'i have narrated this hadith through Mawli Umm Arwa (RA) in this manner, and Imam Muhammad has narrated this hadith through Imam Maq from Zuhri.

2989

And Imam Muhammad said: 'And you do this act that if someone breaks a voluntary fast, then the fast must be made up.' And this is the opinion of Imam Abu Hanifah and our predecessors, the Companions, including Abu Bakr, Umar, Ali, Ibn Abbas, Jabir bin Abdullah, Aishah, and Umm Salamah (RA). And Hasan Basri, Sa'id bin Jubayr, Imam Abu Hanifah, Imam Mak, Imam Abu Yusuf, and Imam Muhammad (may Allah have mercy on them) hold this view, as mentioned in Al-Abwab Al-Qari. And Tazkiyah said: 'The companions of the Prophet ﷺ and other scholars have adopted this hadith.' And these scholars have ruled that if someone breaks a voluntary fast, then making it up is obligatory. And this is the opinion of Imam Mak bin Anas (may Allah have mercy on him).

Al-Muzani reported from Al-Shafi’i from Sufyan from Talhah ibn Yahya from his aunt Aisha bint Talhah from Aisha, the wife of the Prophet (ﷺ), that she said, "The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) entered upon me, and I said to him, 'O Messenger of Allah, we have saved some hais for you.' He said, 'I intended to fast, but bring it to me, and I will fast another day in its place.'" [Narrated by Al-Tahawi] The author of Al-Urf al-Shadhi said, "The chain is extremely authentic." Al-Bayhaqi narrated it in his Sunan al-Kubra from the chain of Al-Tahawi, and in his book Al-Ma’rifah as well. Nasa’i narrated it in Al-Kubra, and Al-Daraqutni narrated it in his Sunan.

Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) entered upon Hafsah and Aisha while they were fasting, then left and returned to find them eating. He said, "Were you not fasting?" They said, "Yes, but we were presented with this food, and we desired it, so we ate from it." He said, "Fast another day in its place." [Narrated by Nasa’i] In the chain is Khattab ibn al-Qasim and Khasaif. Ibn al-Qattan said, "Khattab is trustworthy," as stated by Ibn Ma’in and Abu Zur’ah. Abu Dawud, Yahya ibn Ma’in, Abu Zur’ah, and Al-‘Ijli said, "Khasaif is trustworthy." Ibn Ma’in said, "He is reliable," and also said, "There is no harm in him."

(1) The statement: "Ibn al-Qattan said, etc." This is mentioned in ‘Umdat al-Qari.

2992

Anas ibn Sirin reported that he fasted on the day of Arafah but became extremely thirsty, so he broke his fast. He asked several companions of the Prophet (ﷺ), and they instructed him to fast another day in its place. [Narrated by Ibn Abi Shaybah] The author of Al-Jawhar al-Naqi said, "This chain meets the conditions of the two Shaykhs except for Al-Taymi, but the authors of the four books narrated from him, and Ibn Sa’d, Ibn Sufyan, and Al-Daraqutni authenticated him." Al-Tahawi narrated something similar.

2993

Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that he informed his companions that he was fasting, then came out to them with his head dripping. They said, "Were you not fasting?" He said, "Yes, but a slave girl of mine passed by me, and I desired her, so I had intercourse with her. She was beautiful, and I desired her. I will fast another day in its place." [Narrated by Al-Tahawi]

2994

Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that a man from the companions of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) prepared food and invited the Prophet (ﷺ) and some of his companions. When the food was brought, one of them declined, and the Prophet (ﷺ) asked, "What is wrong with you?" He said, "I am fasting." The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Your brother has gone to trouble for you and prepared food, and you say you are fasting? Eat and fast another day in its place." [Narrated by Al-Daraqutni and Al-Tayalisi] In a narration by Bukhari from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), he said, "The Prophet (ﷺ) entered upon Umm Sulaym, and she brought him dates and butter. He said, 'Return your butter to its container and your dates to their container, for I am fasting.' Then he went to a corner of the house and prayed a non-obligatory prayer, after which he supplicated for Umm Sulaym and her household." In a narration by Muslim from Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him), the Prophet (ﷺ) said, "When one of you is invited to food while fasting, let him say, 'I am fasting.'" In another narration, he said, "When one of you is invited, let him accept. If he is fasting, let him pray, and if he is not fasting, let him eat."

(2) The statement: "Eat, etc." In Al-Durr al-Mukhtar, it is said: Hospitality is an excuse for both the guest and the host if the host is someone who would not be satisfied with mere attendance and would be offended by the guest not eating. Otherwise, it is not an excuse. This is the correct view in the school.

2995

In another version reported by Bukhari from Anas (RA),

the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to Umm Sulaim (RA), and she presented garlic and clarified butter to him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Put the clarified butter in a muskin and the garlic in its container, for I am fasting today.' Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went to one side and performed a voluntary prayer, and he supplicated for Umm Sulaim (RA) and her household.

2996

Muslim narrates on the authority of Abu Hurairah (RA) that he said:

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'If someone calls you to eat while you are fasting (and you do not wish to break your fast), say, “I am fasting.”'

2998

Buraydah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that Bilal entered upon the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) while they were having lunch. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Come and eat, O Bilal." Bilal said, "I am fasting, O Messenger of Allah." The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "You are eating our provision, and Bilal’s extra provision is in Paradise. Do you not know, O Bilal, that the bones of a fasting person glorify Allah, and the angels seek forgiveness for them as long as others eat in their presence?"
