Allah the Almighty said: "Indeed, We sent it down during the Night of Decree. And what can make you know what is the Night of Decree? The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months. The angels and the Spirit descend therein by permission of their Lord for every matter. Peace it is until the emergence of dawn" (Al-Qadr: 1-5).

English

Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was asked about Laylat al-Qadr while he was listening, and he said, "It is in every Ramadan." [Narrated by Al-Tahawi] Abu Dawud narrated it as marfu’, and he said, "Sufyan and Shu’bah narrated it from Abu Ishaq as mawquf on Ibn Umar."

English notes

1 The statement: "In every Ramadan" This hadith indicates that Laylat al-Qadr is in every Ramadan. Some said this is evidence that it could be at the beginning, middle, or end of Ramadan. This is mentioned in Sharh Ma’ani al-Athar. Ibn al-Malik said: It is not restricted to the last ten nights but could be any night of Ramadan. This is mentioned in Al-Durr al-Mukhtar. The Fatwa follows the Imam’s opinion, but it is restricted to the 27th night for those unfamiliar with the differences. Abu Hanifah responded to the evidence restricting it to the last ten nights by saying that it refers to the Ramadan in which it was sought, as indicated by the context of the hadiths. This is mentioned in Al-Mirqah.

Ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated, "Whoever stands in prayer throughout the year will attain Laylat al-Qadr." [Narrated by Muslim] Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi, Nasa’i, Ahmad, Al-Bayhaqi in Shu’ab al-Iman, Al-Daraqutni in Al-Afrad, and Ibn Hibban narrated something similar. In a narration by Al-Tahawi, he said, "Whoever stands in prayer the entire year will attain Laylat al-Qadr." In a narration by Muslim, the Prophet (ﷺ) said, "It rises on that day without any rays."

English notes

1 The statement: "Whoever stands in prayer throughout the year, etc." In Rad al-Muhtar, it is mentioned in Al-Bahr from Al-Khaniyyah: The famous opinion of the Imam is that Laylat al-Qadr rotates, meaning it could be in Ramadan or other months. I say: This is supported by what Sultan al-‘Arifin Sayyidi Muhyi al-Din ibn Arabi said in his Futuhat al-Makkiyyah: "People differed regarding Laylat al-Qadr, meaning its time. Some said it rotates throughout the year. I say: I have seen it in Sha’ban, Rabi’, and Ramadan, and most often in Ramadan, in the last ten nights, and once in the middle ten nights on an even night, and on odd nights. I am certain that it rotates throughout the year on odd and even nights." This is mentioned in Al-Musawwa. Al-Mahalli said: Al-Muzani and Ibn Khuzaymah said it moves every year to reconcile the narrations. Al-Nawawi said in Al-Rawdah: This is strong, and Al-Shafi’i’s view is that it is not fixed to a specific night. In Al-Minhaj, Al-Shafi’i leaned toward it being the 21st or 23rd night. In Alamgiriyyah, it is said: Know that seeking Laylat al-Qadr is recommended. According to Abu Hanifah, it is in Ramadan, but it is not known which night it is, and it may move. According to others, it is fixed and does not move. This is mentioned in Qadi Khan: The famous opinion of Abu Hanifah is that it rotates throughout the year and could be in Ramadan or other months. This is supported by Ibn Mas’ud, Ibn Abbas, Ikrimah, and others. This is mentioned in ‘Umdat al-Qari.

On the day of their Eid, meaning Eid al-Fitr, Allah boasts about them to His angels and says, 'O My angels, what is the reward of a worker who has fulfilled his work?' They say, 'Our Lord, his reward is that he should be given his full reward.' Allah says, 'My angels, My male and female servants have fulfilled their obligation to Me, then they went out supplicating to Me.
