Anas said: When the verse You will not attain righteousness until you spend from what you love (Al-Imran 3:92) was revealed, Abu Talhah went to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and said, "O Messenger of Allah, Allah says: You will not attain righteousness until you spend from what you love (Al-Imran 3:92), and the dearest of my wealth to me is Bayruha’. It is a charity for Allah, and I hope for its reward and treasure with Allah. Place it, O Messenger of Allah, where Allah shows you." The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "Well done! That is a profitable wealth. I have heard what you said about it, and I think you should give it to your relatives." Abu Talhah said, "I will do so, O Messenger of Allah." Rabitah bint ‘Abdullah, the wife of ‘Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with them), reported: She was a skilled woman from Sana’a, and ‘Abdullah ibn Mas’ud had no wealth. She used to spend on him and their children from her earnings. She said, "By Allah, you and your children have kept me so busy that I cannot give charity." He said, "I do not like that you should not have a reward for what you do." So she and her family asked the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). She said, "O Messenger of Allah, I am a skilled woman, and I sell from my work. My children and husband have nothing, and they keep me so busy that I cannot give charity. Do I get a reward for spending on them?" He said, "You will be rewarded for what you spend on them, so spend on them." [Narrated by Al-Tahawi]

Notes / الحواشي
English notes

1 The statement: "A woman from Sana’a" etc. In Sharh Ma’ani al-Athar, it is said: "This indicates that the charity mentioned was voluntary and not obligatory. Rabitah was Zainab, the wife of ‘Abdullah ibn Mas’ud. It is not known that ‘Abdullah had another wife during the time of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). The evidence that this charity was voluntary is her statement: 'I was a skilled woman, and I used to sell from my work and spend on ‘Abdullah.' The response of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) in this hadith and the previous one was in answer to her question. In this hadith of Rabitah, it is mentioned: 'I used to spend from that on ‘Abdullah and his children.' It is unanimously agreed that a woman cannot spend her Zakat on her children. Since what she spent on her children was not from Zakat, similarly, what she spent on her husband was also not from Zakat."

‘Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated: "O Messenger of Allah, I have two neighbors. To which of them should I give a gift?" He said, "To the one whose door is closer to you." [Narrated by Bukhari]

Notes / الحواشي
English notes

1 The statement: "The one whose door is closer to you" refers to the neighbor whose house is adjacent to yours, according to the opinion of Abu Hanifah. Others said: "The one who lives in your neighborhood and shares the same mosque with you." This is considered the most appropriate view. Al-Shafi’i said: "The neighbor includes up to forty houses in every direction." The correct opinion is that of the Imam, as mentioned in Al-Durr al-Muntaqa, and clarified by Al-‘Allamah Qasim. This is the analogy. Among the rights of a neighbor is not to forget them in food, drink, and clothing, and to assist them in every difficulty. If one can feed them, they should do so; otherwise, they should not let the effects of cooking, such as smoke, be seen, as it may cause them distress. This is the summary of what is mentioned in Al-Tafsirat al-Ahmadiyyah and Al-Durr al-Mukhtar and Radd al-Muhtar in the book of Wills. This is why ‘Ali al-Qari said in Al-Mirqat: "Perhaps the reason is that they are more connected and more aware, making them more deserving of good companionship and visible kindness." Allah says: And do good to parents, relatives, orphans, the needy, the near neighbor, the distant neighbor, the companion at your side (Al-Nisa 4:36). This indicates that the closer neighbor is more deserving of kindness, but it does not mean that giving is restricted to the closest neighbor, as is apparent from the hadith.

Shall I inform you of the worst of people? A man who is asked in the name of Allah but does not give." [Narrated by Al-Tirmidhi, Al-Nasa’i, and Al-Darimi]

English notes

1 The statement: "Asked in the name of Allah" in Al-Mukhtarat, it is said: Ibn al-Mubarak said, "If someone asks for the sake of Allah or for the right of Allah, I prefer not to give them anything, as they have elevated what Allah has made insignificant." This is understood to apply when the need is not known. I say: One should consider the prohibition along with what our teacher Al-Jarahi mentioned from Al-Tabarani with a chain of narrators who are reliable, from Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) that he heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: "Cursed is the one who asks in the name of Allah, and cursed is the one who is asked in the name of Allah and then refuses, unless the request is inappropriate." This is the summary of what is in Al-Durr al-Mukhtar and Radd al-Muhtar.
