And the saying of Allah, the Exalted: "Or if any of you comes from the toilet" (Al-Ma’idah: 6)
Narrated Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "The prayer of a person who breaks his wudu (i.e., becomes impure) will not be accepted until he performs wudu." [Agreed upon]
Narrated Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "A prayer without purification is not accepted, and neither is charity from stolen goods." [Narrated by Muslim]
Narrated by Mundhir Abu Ya'la al-Qauri from Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyyah: I heard him narrate from his father that he said, "I used to experience wet dreams, so I instructed Al-Miqdad to ask the Prophet (ﷺ) about it, and I was too shy to ask him myself because his daughter was present with me. So Al-Miqdad asked him, and the Prophet (ﷺ) said, 'Whenever semen is discharged, a ghusl (ritual bath) is obligatory, and when pre-ejaculate (madhiy) is discharged, wudu (ablution) is required.'" 1 [Narrated by Tahawi, and also by Bukhari and Muslim in similar wording]
Notes /
1 The saying: "And if it is pre-ejaculate, then wudu is required." Al-Tahawi said: Some scholars are of the view that it is obligatory for a man to wash his private parts (the penis) when he experiences pre-ejaculate (madhiy) or after urination. However, others disagreed with them, stating that the Prophet (ﷺ) did not mandate washing the private parts in such cases, but rather to prevent the pre-ejaculate from flowing. Do you not see that when Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated what the Prophet (ﷺ) prescribed for him in such situations, he mentioned performing wudu for prayer? Therefore, it is established that anything other than the wudu for prayer prescribed by the Prophet (ﷺ) was for a different reason and not for the same cause that requires wudu for prayer. This is the view of Abu Hanifa, Abu Yusuf, and Muhammad ibn al-Hasan (may Allah have mercy on them).
From Aisha bint Anas, she said: I heard Ali on the pulpit saying: "I was a man who experienced pre-ejaculate (madhiy), and I wanted to ask the Prophet (ﷺ), but I felt shy because his daughter was married to me. So, I instructed Ammar to ask him, and he replied: 'Wudu is sufficient for it.'" [Narrated by al-Tahawi]
From Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: I asked the Prophet (ﷺ) about semen, and he said: "For pre-ejaculate (madhiy), wudu is required, and for semen (mani), ghusl is required." [Narrated by al-Tirmidhi]

From Umm Salama (may Allah be pleased with him), she said: I presented a roasted side of meat to the Prophet (ﷺ), and he ate from it. Then he got up for prayer and did not perform wudu. [Narrated by Ahmad]
From Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir, he said: I entered upon one of the wives of the Prophet (ﷺ) and said: "Tell me about something that was changed by fire?" She said: "Very rarely did the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) come to us except when we had a certain type of grain available in Madinah. He would eat from it, then pray without performing wudu." [Narrated by Al-Tahawi]
From Abu Rafi (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: I bear witness that I used to roast the stomach of a sheep for the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). Then he prayed without performing wudu. [Narrated by Muslim, and al-Tahawi narrated something similar]

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Hand me the shoulder, O Abu Rafi." So I handed him the shoulder. Then he said, "Hand me the other shoulder," and I gave him the other shoulder. Then he said, "Hand me the other shoulder," to which I replied, "O Messenger of Allah, the sheep only has two shoulders." The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "If you had remained silent and kept handing me shoulder after shoulder, you would not have stopped."
Then he called for water, rinsed his mouth, washed his fingers, got up, prayed, then returned to them, finding the food had cooled down. He ate, then went to the mosque, prayed, and did not touch any water.
And from Anas: The companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would wait for the Isha prayer until their heads would droop, then they would pray without performing ablution. [Narrated by Abu Dawood and Tirmidhi, except that in it, he mentioned "they would sleep" instead of "they would wait for Isha until their heads would droop." Sheikh Imam Ibn al-Humam said: "This applies to those who are neither standing nor prostrating nor bowing, as confirmed."
And from the Prophet ﷺ: "Ablution is not obligatory on one who sleeps while sitting, standing, or prostrating, until he lays down on his side; for when he lies down, his joints become relaxed." [Narrated by Al-Bayhaqi]
In another narration from Abu Huraira, it is mentioned similarly, and its chain is good.
And from Ibn Abbas: He saw the Prophet ﷺ sleeping while prostrating until he either snored or exhaled, then he got up to pray. I said: "O Messenger of Allah, you slept?" He said: "Ablution is only obligatory on one who sleeps while lying down, for when he lies down, his joints become relaxed." [Narrated by Abu Dawood and Tirmidhi]
And from Amr ibn Shu’aib, from his father, from his grandfather: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "There is no ablution required for one who sleeps while standing or sitting until he lies on his side on the ground." [Narrated by Ibn Adi]
And from Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman: I was sitting in the mosque of Madinah, dozing off, when a man from behind embraced me. I turned and found the Prophet ﷺ. I said: "O Messenger of Allah, is ablution required for me?" He said: "No, until you lay your side on the earth." [Narrated by Ibn Adi]
And from Ibn Abbas: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Ablution is required for one who sleeps while lying down, for when he lies down, his joints become relaxed." [Narrated by Tirmidhi and Abu Dawood]
And from Talq ibn Ali: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked about a man touching his private part after performing ablution. He said: "Is it not just a part of him?" [Narrated by Abu Dawood, Tirmidhi, Nasai, Ibn Hibban in his Sahih, and Muhammad in Al-Muwatta]
Tirmidhi said: "This is the best narration in this chapter." Al-Tahawi narrated similarly and said: "This narration has a straight chain of transmission, without any inconsistencies in its chain or content." Ibn Madini stated: "The narration of Mulazim ibn Amr is better than the narration of Busra." Amr ibn Ali Al-Fallas said: "The narration of Talq is more reliable than that of Busra bint Safwan." And the scholar Muhi al-Sunnah and others said: "The narration of Busra is abrogated, for Talq arrived in the early years of Hijrah, while the narration of Busra was narrated by Abu Huraira, who embraced Islam later."
Imam Ibn al-Humam said: "It is correct only if they can prove that Talq passed away before the Islam of Abu Huraira or returned to his land, and had no companionship with him after that. But they are not able to do so, since they also narrated a weak Hadith from him: 'Whoever touches his private part should perform ablution.' They claimed he heard both the abrogating and the abrogated narration, even though Abu Huraira's Hadith is also weak due to the inclusion of Yazid ibn Abd al-Malik in its chain."
Then the Hadith of Talq is preferred based on what has been mentioned from Ibn al-Madini and others, and because the Hadith of men is stronger; they are more reliable and accurate, which is why the testimony of two women is equivalent to the testimony of one man. Additionally, matters concerning the nullifiers of wudu' are things that both the private and public need to be aware of. It has been established from Ali, Ammar ibn Yasir, Abdullah ibn Masud, Ibn Abbas, Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman, Imran ibn Husayn, Abu Darda, and Saad ibn Abi Waqqas that they do not see the act of touching the private part as a nullifier of wudu'. Therefore, its concealment from them, despite their need for it, and its appearance to a woman who does not need it, is highly unlikely. Furthermore, there is a contradiction with analogy, as it involves a break in reasoning.
From Ibn Abbas, he said about touching the private part while in prayer: "I do not mind whether I touch it or touch my nose." [Narrated by Muhammad and al-Tahawi.
From al-Bara' ibn Qais, he said: "I asked Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman about a man touching his private part, and he said: 'It is like touching his head.'" [Narrated by Muhammad, al-Tahawi, and Ibn Abi Shaybah.
From Qays, he said: A man came to Abdullah ibn Mas'ud and said: "I touched my private part while I was in prayer." Abdullah ibn Mas'ud replied: "Why didn’t you cut it off?" Then he said: "Is your private part not like the rest of your body?" [Narrated by Muhammad]
From Qays ibn Abi Hazim, he said: A man came to Saad ibn Abi Waqqas and asked: "Is it permissible for me to touch my private part while I am in prayer?" Saad ibn Abi Waqqas replied: "If you know that there is a part of you that is impure, then cut it off." [Narrated by Muhammad and al-Tahawi. Al-Tabarani also narrated something similar in his Al-Kabir, and its narrators are trustworthy, as mentioned in Majma' al-Zawa'id.
From Aisha, she said: "The Prophet ﷺ used to kiss some of his wives, then pray without performing wudu' again." [Narrated by Abu Dawood, Tirmidhi, Nasai, and Ibn Majah]
The author of Mishkat said: Tirmidhi stated: "The chain of narration of Urwah from Aisha is not authentic according to our scholars." Al-Taybi said: "This statement is not correct because in the Sahihayn (the two authentic books), there are numerous reports of Urwah hearing from Aisha, and he was her student."
Also, the author of Mishkat said: "The chain of narration of Ibrahim al-Taymi from her (Aisha) is not authentic." Abu Dawood said: "This is a mursal (disconnected) narration, and Ibrahim al-Taymi did not hear directly from Aisha, but it is acceptable because mursal narration is accepted by us and by the majority." Al-Bazzar narrated a similar narration in his Musnad with a good chain of narration.
From Aisha, she said: "I used to sleep between the hands of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with my legs towards his qibla. When he would prostrate, he would gently touch my legs, and I would pull them back. When he stood, I would stretch them out." She said: "And at that time, the houses did not have lamps." [Narrated by Muhyi al-Sunnah]
Al-Bukhari, Muslim, and al-Nasa'i narrated something similar, and Zayla'i said: "The chain of narration in al-Nasa'i meets the condition of being authentic."
From Aisha, she said: "I was lying next to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and I missed him at night. I touched him with my hand, and my hand fell on his feet while he was in prostration. He was saying: 'I seek refuge in Your pleasure from Your anger, and in Your pardon from Your punishment, and I seek refuge in You from You. I cannot praise You enough, You are as You have praised Yourself.'" [Narrated by Muhyi al-Sunnah, and Muslim narrated something similar]
From Yahya ibn Sa'id: Umar ibn al-Khattab went out to pray, and his wife kissed him, then he prayed without performing wudu (ablution). [Narrated by Abd al-Razzaq]
From Ibn Abbas, he said: "I do not mind whether I kissed her or smelled a fragrance of basil." [Narrated by Abd al-Razzaq]
From Ali ibn Abi Talib, he said: "Touching (or caressing) is intercourse, but Allah used a euphemism for it." [Narrated by Ibn Abi Shaybah and Ibn Jarir, and Muhyi al-Sunnah narrated something similar from Mujahid and Qatadah.
From Ibn Abbas, regarding the verse: "Or you have touched the women," he said: "It refers to intercourse." [Narrated by Ibn Abi Shaybah and Ibn Jarir]
From al-Hasan, he said: "Touching is intercourse." [Narrated by Ibn Abi Shaybah]
From Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz, from Tamim al-Dari, he said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Wudu (ablution) is required from every flowing blood." [Narrated by al-Daraqutni]
The author of Mishkat said: Al-Daraqutni stated that Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz did not hear directly from Tamim al-Dari, nor did he see him. Imam Ibn al-Humam, the scholar, said: "There is no harm in it, because a mursal narration (disconnected) is accepted by us and the majority of scholars." Then al-Daraqutni mentioned that in this chain, there are two unknown narrators: Yazid ibn Khalid and Yazid ibn Muhammad.
The response to this is that it has been narrated through various chains, some of which strengthen one another, thus elevating it to the level of Hasan. Ibn Adi narrated in his Al-Kamil from Zayd, with a similar narration that is raised (to the Prophet ﷺ). Sheikh al-Dahlawi mentioned in Fath al-Mannan that there is some difference of opinion about Yazid ibn Khalid and Yazid ibn Muhammad, but they were both considered trustworthy as mentioned in Al-Kashf by al-Dhahabi. The "unknown" in this context refers to someone whose identity is not well-established and has only one narrator reporting from them, and they have not been confirmed. However, if two or more narrators report from them, they are no longer considered "unknown."
From Hussein al-Mu'allim, with his chain of narration from Ma'dan ibn Abi Talha from Abu Darda: "The Prophet ﷺ vomited, and then performed wudu." He said: "I met Thawban in the mosque of Damascus, and mentioned this to him, and he confirmed it, saying: 'Yes, I poured the wudu for him.'" [Narrated by Abu Dawood, al-Tirmidhi, and al-Nasa'i]
Al-Tirmidhi said: "This is the most authentic narration in this regard," and al-Hakim stated that it meets the conditions of both Bukhari and Muslim.
From Ibn Umar: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "If someone laughs loudly (in a loud laugh) during prayer, he must repeat his wudu and his prayer." [Narrated by Ibn Adi in Al-Kamil]
In a narration from al-Daraqutni, from Abu Huraira, it is reported that the Prophet ﷺ said: "If someone laughs loudly during prayer, he must repeat his wudu and his prayer."
From Ma'bad ibn Abi Ma'bad al-Khuza'i, from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: "While he was in prayer, a blind man came to perform the prayer, and he fell into a pit. The people laughed and burst into loud laughter. When the Prophet ﷺ finished the prayer, he said: 'Whoever among you laughed loudly, let him repeat his wudu and his prayer.'" [Narrated by our Imam Abu Hanifa]
The hadith narrated by Al-Daraqutni, Al-Tabarani, Abdul Razzaq, Ibn Abi Shaybah, Ibn Adi, and Abu Dawood in their respective books mentions a man who asks the Prophet ﷺ about a situation in which a man has an interaction with a woman without physical intimacy but with improper touching. The Prophet ﷺ responded by ordering him to perform wudu and pray, and then the verse (11:114) was revealed: "Establish prayer at the two ends of the day and during the night. Verily, good deeds wipe out evil deeds. That is a reminder for those who remember."
The man asked if this ruling applied only to him or to all believers, and the Prophet ﷺ confirmed that it applied to all Muslims. This narration indicates that inappropriate physical contact (such as an improper touch) invalidates wudu, as mentioned by the scholar in "Al-Bada'i."
Notes /
1 The statement "Narrated by..." indicates that this hadith is found in the Musnad of Imam Abu Hanifa, and it is both a musnad and mursal hadith. The narrators of the book "Al-Athar" are trustworthy and well-known. Ma'bad, in this case, is a companion of the Prophet ﷺ, as stated in "Ihya’ al-Sunan".
