An Introduction to Zujajat al-Masabih
The true worth and value of the book will become apparent only through its study; nevertheless, by way of introduction, a few lines are presented as a gift to the readers:
The fact is that Hadrat Abu al-Hasanat Sayyid ʿAbdullah Shah Naqshbandi Mujaddidi Qadri, Muhaddith of the Deccan (may Allah have mercy on him), after a penetrating study of Mishkat Sharif, felt the pressing need that, just as Mishkat Sharif is, with regard to legal issues, an excellent collection of the Prophet's hadiths ﷺ for the Shafiʿi scholars, in exactly the same way those hadiths upon which Hanafi fiqh is founded should also be brought together. May Allah reward the efforts of those learned men who took up the pen on this subject and compiled the Hanafi hadiths in excellent fashion, yet a comprehensiveness like that of the Mishkat was not attained.
The composition of so magnificent a book Allah Most High had reserved for the venerable author. Thus, with unseen support, which he has himself expressed in the preface of his book Zujajat al-Masabih, the Mawlana undertook this task and carried it to completion. Through the work here presented, those who raise objections against Hadrat Imam Aʿzam (may Allah have mercy on him) will come to know full well that, apart from hadith, every saying of the Imam is derived from the saying of some Companion or Successor; an objection against the revered Imam is therefore like an objection against a Companion or Successor, and thus, certainly, no statement of the Imam of a great portion of the world is without foundation.
In Zujajat al-Masabih the revered author has adhered to the following principles:
(1) On the pattern of Sahih al-Bukhari, the relevant Qur'anic verses have been gathered after every major heading.
(2) Since the principal aim of this compilation was to provide, on the pattern of the Mishkat, a comprehensive treasury of hadiths for the Hanafis, the books, chapters, and headings were taken from the Mishkat itself; however, wherever the learned author of the Mishkat (mercy be upon him) had, in his headings, shown consideration for Shafiʿi fiqh, in this book consideration for Hanafi fiqh has been kept in view at those places.
(3) In the Mishkat, the hadiths concerning a single issue lay scattered across three sections, which made it difficult for the reader both to maintain continuity and to locate the issues at a glance; therefore (in the Zujajah) the hadiths relating to each issue have been brought together without regard to section.
(4) It is evident that Hanafi fiqh is a shoreless ocean. From this vast sea the learned author has picked out priceless pearls. On every issue there are several opinions; for this reason, first the authoritative opinion (qawl mufta bih) was obtained; secondly, the hadith agreeing with it was sought; thirdly, that hadith was scrutinized so as to provide the means of repelling objections, which is why a critique of the narrators is recorded at the end of most hadiths.
(5) Reasoned replies to objections against Hanafi fiqh, clarification of Hanafi positions after the correct interpretation of the hadiths, and, as needed, the recording of legal issues in the margins from hadiths and from Hanafi works with their references, have all been done with complete care.
The book comprises five volumes. It has many other important features as well, which will become apparent only on study. In brief: just as the Mishkat is a blessing for the followers of the Shafiʿi school, in exactly the same way this book is an excellent and rare gift for the Hanafis.

An Essential Appeal
Muslims! Listen, listen attentively! With Allah Most High the special rule for Muslims is that their world goes with their religion. When Muslims abandon the religion, the world too slips away from them; when they ruin the religion, their world too is ruined. If anyone has the doubt"We are religious, why then is our world being ruined?"
Gentlemen! Our condition is like that of a man who earns a single paisa and begins to count himself among the wealthy. Tell the truth: would you call the holder of one paisa rich, or would you say he has gone mad? For no one calls the holder of one paisa wealthy; rather, wealthy is he who possesses wealth in appreciable measure. Likewise, one who performs an act or two and calls himself religious also deserves to be called mad. Only after performing all the deeds prescribed in the religion do you deserve to be called religious.
Or understand it thus: handsome is he whose eye, nose, and all else are sound. Suppose someone's nose has been cut off, and placing a hand over it he says"I too am handsome", just let the hand be moved from the nose and it will be seen how handsome he is! Just so are we regarding ourselves as religious; if the reality of religion, what religion truly means, were laid open, you too would have to hang your head like the noseless "handsome" man.
Or understand it thus: you tell a friend that you need a man. After a long while that friend brings to you a man laid out on a cot, in whom are nearly all the illnesses there are: no eyes, no ears, hands and feet useless, gone mad, yet alive; were anyone to kill him, the law would exact retribution for him. But can that man fulfil your purpose? Never!
You will ask in astonishment"Brother, why have you brought him?" If that friend replies"I brought him for you, you had requested that a man be fetched," you will laugh and say"Though by dictionary and by law this is a man, yet since my purpose is not served by him, for me he is no man."
Gentlemen! Just so, what is the purpose of religion? Is it complete salvation, or is it a national emblem? We have become utterly heedless of being Muslim: no care for beliefs, no concern for deeds, no thought for good social conduct, no grief over ill character. No part of our religion is sound; our religion is exactly like the aforesaid man whom the friend brought. Our religion is a mere national emblem; on its account we do not deserve to be called religious! And when we are not religious, how then shall our world be set right?
Gentlemen! If you wish to know the reality of religion, then study Zujajat al-Masabih; then act upon it and become worthy of being called religious. After reading the whole of Zujajat al-Masabih, your knowledge of certainty will reach the eye of certainty: that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is without doubt the Seal of the Prophets, and after him no prophet is needed. Whatever was required to set right the world and the hereafter of man, he has expounded completely, and all of it has come into Zujajat al-Masabih. But with the revolution of the times Arabic was no longer commonly understood, and there was need for it to be translated into Urdu. With this need in view, Mawlawi Muhammad Muniruddin Sahib, Shaykh al-Adab of Jamiʿa Nizamiyya, began a simple, easily intelligible translation of Zujajat al-Masabih. On behalf of all Muslims, thanks are offered to the revered Mawlawi for giving Muslims the opportunity to benefit from Zujajat al-Masabih.
Before this translation was printed, Mawlawi Muhammad ʿAbd al-Sattar Khan Sahib, M.A., Lecturer in Arabic at Jamiʿa ʿUthmaniyya, with great effort and toil gave his precious time and, by adding the passages in parentheses and appending the notes under "ف" (fa, the beneficial notes), redoubled the beauty of the translation. The difficulties that were arising in understanding Zujajat al-Masabih thereby remained no more; for this, on behalf of all Muslims, thanks are offered to him.
May Allah Most High make the reward of this scholarly service an ongoing charity (sadaqa jariya) for both of these gentlemen, conveying reward to them forever; may He in return be pleased with them, and by granting immense reward make them pleased with Him.
At the time of the translation, and at the time of the addition of the parentheses and the notes, I too remained associated with both of these gentlemen. I have named this translation Nur al-Masabih, may Allah Most High accept it. Amin.
The first part of Nur al-Masabih is coming before you. When you study it, you will find that you are present in the court of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: he ﷺ is speaking and you are listening, or he ﷺ is doing some deed and you are watching it. Fortunate are those who obtain this blessing.
Now my essential appeal to all Muslims, and especially to my friends, is this: do not read this Nur al-Masabih once and place it on the shelf of oblivion; rather, read it again and again like the books of daily devotions, and keep striving to act upon it.
O Allah! You are ours, make us Yours as well, and grant us the ability to keep acting upon the word and deed of Your beloved, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Amin.

Preface
In Praise of Allah Most High
Every kind of praise is due to Allah alone, who is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The likeness of His light is as a niche in which there is a lamp, a lamp within a glass. He it is who leads along the paths of safety; He it is who inspires us to walk upon the religion of truth; and He it is who, through following the Prophet's Sunnah ﷺ, bestows the splendour of religion and the world, and the fulfilment of needs lies in His grasp and power alone.
In Praise of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ
May Allah Most High send down His peace and His mercies forever and ever upon His Prophet (ﷺ), whom He made the lamp of all the worlds, and upon whom He sent down His holy book the Qur'an, which He kept pure of every crookedness. His ﷺ alone is that glory into whose religion people entered troop upon troop, and all call the blessed year of his birth the year of joy. And may they descend upon his family and his Companions, who are the lamps of guidance and the stars to be followed. May Allah's peace and His mercies keep descending as long as oil keeps the lamp alight (that is, forever and ever).
The secret of acting on the Holy Qur'an and standing firm upon the Prophet's way ﷺ
After praising Allah Most High and invoking blessings upon His holy Messenger and his family and Companions, the one most in need of Allah's mercy among Allah's servants, Abu al-Hasanat Sayyid ʿAbdullah, son of Hadrat Mawlana Sayyid Muzaffar Husayn Sahib, of Hyderabad, Hanafi (may Allah deal with them both with His hidden kindness and pardon their faults out of His abounding grace), says: adherence to the way of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ cannot be established until the lights that issued from the niche of his blessed breast, that is, his hadiths, are followed; and grasping the rope of Allah (that is, acting upon the Holy Qur'an) cannot be completed until the hidden meanings of the Qur'an are made manifest.
In praise of Mishkat al-Masabih and its author Khatib Tabrizi (may Allah have mercy on him)
The fact is that Mishkat al-Masabih, a precious treasury of the hadiths of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, was written by one who was a river of knowledge and an ocean of understanding, a revealer of the realities of religion and of its subtleties, a man of piety and sanctity, Hadrat Mawlana Wali al-Din Muhammad ibn ʿAbdullah, Khatib Tabrizi (may Allah have mercy on him). In truth it is a most comprehensive collection of the hadiths of the Noble Prophet ﷺ, an immensely beneficial treasury of his hidden utterances, a complete book of its art, and a perfect register of rare and precious hadiths.
The Mishkat's arrangement of legal issues follows the Shafiʿi school
This precious book of ʿAllama Khatib Tabrizi (may Allah Most High keep his rank exalted) is the one in which he gathered the hadiths of the school and way of Hadrat Imam Shafiʿi (may Allah have mercy on him).
The intention to compose Zujajat al-Masabih and the Prophet's glad tidings ﷺ
After the penetrating study of the Mishkat, this thought often dwelt in my heart: that I should write a book on the pattern of the Mishkat in which I would adopt the school of our Imam Aʿzam Hadrat Abu Hanifa (may Allah's mercy be upon him forever; may He forever be pleased and happy with him). But my want of means kept holding me back from attaining that rank, until, in those very days, I saw in a dream that the radiant sun of the day of prophethood and the luminous moon of the dark night, the light of guidance and the bright lamp of the darknesses, our dear and beloved illustrious Master, the Noble Prophet ﷺ, appeared in glory and gave the greeting of peace. I answered the greeting, saying: "My life be sacrificed for you!" He clasped me to his blessed breast, the fountainhead of knowledge and wisdoms, and embraced me. When I awoke from sleep overjoyed, I praised Allah Most High for that blessing and gave Him thanks. In short, by that good and blessed dream my breast was opened (and all the difficulties of the task became easy for me); I resolved upon the completion and composition of this book and girded my loins to write it. By Allah's praise, in this book, at the time of recording every hadith, I have invariably invoked blessings upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ; and I proposed for this book the name Zujajat al-Masabih.
My prayer to Allah, the Great and Exalted, like a humble servant whose heart is filled with the majesty of his Master and whose neck is bowed before His glory, through the intercession of His holy Beloved, the intercessor of creation whose intercession is accepted, is that of His kindness He make this book a means of His good pleasure, and make it as beneficial to the Muslims as the original book Mishkat al-Masabih; that He accept it and make it my provision for the hereafter. Certainly He alone is the Acceptor of prayers, and He has power over all things.
Deeds are reckoned by intentions, for reward depends upon intention alone
On the authority of Umar ibn Al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
"Actions are judged by intentions, () and each person will be rewarded only according to what they intended. So whoever's migration was for Allah and His Messenger, their migration was for Allah and His Messenger. And whoever's migration was for worldly gain or to marry a woman, their migration was to what they migrated for." (Muttafaq Alayh – agreed upon]
This hadith was also narrated by the Imam of the Madhhab, Abu Hanifa (may Allah be pleased with him), in his Musnad, with slight variations. In it, the wording is: "Actions are judged by intentions" (rest of the hadith).
Mullah Ali Al-Qari (may Allah have mercy upon him) commented:
"It is not possible here to negate the existence of actions themselves, as they are established by sensory evidence and in form, even without accompanying intention. Therefore, something must be implied to which the negation is directed and upon which the preposition depends. The interpretation is: 'considered' or 'are considered' according to the methodology of Imam Abu Hanifa and his companions."
And the Imam of the school, Hadrat Abu Hanifa (may Allah Most High have mercy on him), has related this hadith in his Musnad, with some slight variation, in accordance with the wording of Imam Bukhari, and in it are the words "al-aʿmalu bi-l-niyyat" (to the end of the hadith).
Mulla ʿAli Qari (may Allah have mercy on him) has said that at this point the negation of the acts themselves is not possible, the reason being that acts can be established physically and outwardly without the joining of intention; it is therefore necessary to hold something implicit toward which the negation is directed and to which the preposition relates. Hence, on the school of Imam Abu Hanifa (may Allah have mercy on him) and his companions, the word "muʿtabara" (reckoned) or "tuʿtabaru" (are reckoned) will here be taken as implied.
This hadith is mutawatir (mass-transmitted) with some hadith masters, while hadith scholars generally call it mashhur (well-known). The noble hadith scholars (may Allah have mercy on them) generally open their books with this very hadith, because in it the importance of intention (the heart's resolve) is taught; and the truth is that it is from the firmness and excellence of resolve alone that deeds acquire their weight.
It should be known that acts are of two kinds: (1) intended acts (maqsuda) and (2) non-intended acts (ghayr maqsuda). By intended acts are meant those acts and worships that are intended in themselves in the Shariʿa, such as prayer, fasting, zakah, and hajj. Without intention these acts are neither reckoned, nor valid, nor accepted with Allah Most High. In the hadith, by the words "innama al-aʿmalu bi-l-niyyat" these very intended acts are meant: if at the time of their performance the intention, that is, the resolve of the heart, is not made, they carry no weight.
The second kind, non-intended acts, are those acts and worships that are conditions for the intended acts (for prayer, fasting, zakah, and hajj), as ablution is a condition of prayer, not a worship intended in itself, but a means and channel of worship. Acts of this kind, which are not intended in themselves and which serve as condition and means for worship, are valid and sound without intention; but by making the intention, reward and recompense are obtained for them, and without the intention no reward or recompense is obtained. This is the school of the Imam of Imams, Hadrat Imam Aʿzam (may Allah's mercy be upon him), the summary of which is that intended acts are valid and reckoned only through intention, while non-intended acts reach the degree of perfection through intention and are rewarded for it, yet are sound without it.
In the view of Hadrat Imam Shafiʿi (may Allah's mercy be upon him), both kinds of acts, intended and non-intended, are not sound without intention, that is, the heart's resolve: with him intention is obligatory in both.
