Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said to Ali: “You 1 are to me as Harun was to Musa, except that there is no prophet after me.” [Agreed Upon]

Notes /
English notes

1 1 His statement “You are to me as Harun was to Musa”: meaning in the Hereafter, closeness in rank, support in matters of religion, knowledge, and kinship, as stated by one of our scholars. At-Turbashti said: This statement from the Prophet (ﷺ) was made during the expedition to Tabuk. He left Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) behind to look after his family and ordered him to stay in Madinah. The hypocrites spread rumors, saying he left him behind out of dislike or to lighten his burden. When Ali heard this, he took his weapon and went to the Prophet (ﷺ) at Jurf, saying: “O Messenger of Allah! The hypocrites claimed such-and-such.” He said: “They lied. I left you behind for what I left behind me. Return and represent me among my family and yours. Are you not pleased, O Ali, to be to me as Harun was to Musa?” This refers to Allah’s statement: And Musa said to his brother Harun, “Represent me among my people” [Qur’an 7:142]. Those who infer from this Hadith that the caliphate belonged to Ali after the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) are astray from the correct path, as representing the family during his lifetime does not necessitate leadership of the nation after his departure. The analogy they rely on is invalidated by Harun’s departure before Musa (peace be upon them). This Hadith proves Ali’s closeness and his special designation for brotherhood by the Prophet (ﷺ). In Al-Lama’at, it is said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) also appointed Ibn Umm Maktum as deputy for leading the people in prayer during this expedition. If the caliphate were absolute, he would have appointed Ali for leadership in prayer as well, which was more significant. Qadi Iyad said in Sharh Muslim: The Rawafid and other Shia sects clung to this, claiming the caliphate was Ali’s right and that he was designated for it, with the Rawafid declaring the other companions disbelievers for prioritizing others. Some even declared Ali a disbeliever for not pursuing his right. Their claims are too absurd to address, and those who declare the entire nation, especially the early generation, disbelievers have nullified the Sharia and dismantled Islam. This Hadith contains no evidence for their claims; rather, it establishes Ali’s virtue without addressing his superiority over others or designating him as caliph after the Prophet (ﷺ). The Prophet (ﷺ) said this when he appointed him over Madinah during the Tabuk expedition. This is supported by the fact that Harun, the one likened to, was not a caliph after Musa, as he departed from this world about forty years before Musa’s departure, and was only appointed during Musa’s meeting with his Lord for communion. At-Tibi said: From the perspective of rhetoric, “to me” is the predicate of the subject, with “from” indicating connection, the predicate being specific, and the ba being additional, as in Allah’s statement: “If they believe in the like of what you have believed in” [Qur’an 2:137], meaning if they believe a belief like your belief. Thus, it means you are connected to me and have the status with me that Harun had with Musa. This involves a simile, and the point of comparison is not fully specified, so he clarified with “except that there is no prophet after me,” meaning his connection to me is not in prophethood. Thus, the connection remains in terms of caliphate, either during his lifetime or after his departure. It cannot be after his departure, as Harun departed before Musa, so it must refer to during his lifetime at the time of the Tabuk expedition. The conclusion is that a partial caliphate during his lifetime does not indicate a general caliphate after his departure, especially since he was relieved of that caliphate upon his return to Madinah. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

Imran ibn Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Indeed, Ali is from me, and I am from him, and he 1 is the ally of every believer.” [Narrated by At-Tirmidhi]

Notes /
English notes

1 His statement “and he is the ally of every believer”: meaning their beloved, as Ibn al-Malik said, or their supporter, as Qadi said. The Shia used this to argue for Ali’s imamate, claiming “ally” means the one in charge of affairs and entitled to manage them. At-Tibi said: The statement “and he is the ally of every believer” refers to Allah’s statement: “Your ally is none but Allah, His Messenger, and those who believe, who establish prayer and give zakat while bowing” [Qur’an 5:55]. In Al-Kashshaf, it is said: This was revealed about Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). Qadi said: After Allah forbade alliance with disbelievers, He mentioned those worthy of it. In Al-Kashshaf, it is said: If you ask how this applies to Ali when the wording indicates a plural, I say: It was phrased thus to encourage people to emulate his action to attain similar reward and to highlight that a believer’s character should strive for such zeal in goodness and charity. Al-Baydawi said: His statement “while bowing” means humble in their prayers and zakat, or it specifically applies to “give zakat,” meaning they give zakat while bowing in prayer out of zeal for charity and haste in goodness. It was revealed about Ali (may Allah honor his face) when a beggar asked him while he was bowing in prayer, and he gave him his ring. Sayyid Mu’in ad-Din as-Safawi said: What precedes the verse indicates that “alliance” does not mean authority over affairs or entitlement to manage them, as the Shia claim. Rather, it was phrased in the plural to encourage hastening to charity, including anyone who hastens to it. Thus, this verse does not prove Ali’s caliphate. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

Notes /
English notes

1 His statement “and none can fulfill on my behalf”: meaning none can renounce a covenant except me or Ali. The apparent phrasing would be “none can fulfill on my behalf except Ali,” but “me” was included to emphasize the connection in “Ali is from me, and I am from him.” At-Turbashti said: It was the Arabs’ custom that when there was an agreement to break or uphold a covenant or make peace, only the leader or someone closely related to him could fulfill it, and they would not accept it from others. When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) appointed Abu Bakr to lead the people in Hajj, he later saw fit to send Ali (may Allah honor his face) after him to renounce the covenant with the polytheists and recite to them Surah Bara’ah, including: “Indeed, the polytheists are impure, so let them not approach the Sacred Mosque after this year” [Qur’an 9:28] and other rulings. He said this to honor him. I say: And to excuse Abu Bakr’s position there. Hence, Abu Bakr said to Ali when he caught up with him: “As a leader or a follower?” He replied: “A follower.” This hints that his leadership would come after Abu Bakr’s caliphate, as is clear to those who investigate. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

Notes /
English notes

1 His statement “Whoever’s ally I am, Ali is his ally”: In Sharh al-Masabih by Qadi, the Shia said “ally” means the one in charge. They claimed the Hadith means Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) is entitled to manage everything the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) is entitled to, including the affairs of the believers, making him their imam. At-Tibi said: It is not valid to interpret “alliance” as imamate, meaning authority over the believers’ affairs, because the one in charge during his lifetime is none but him. It must be understood as love, Islamic loyalty, or similar. It is said: The reason for this Hadith, as narrated by Hafiz Shams ad-Din al-Jazari from Ibn Ishaq, is that Ali spoke to some who were with him in Yemen. When the Prophet (ﷺ) completed his Hajj, he addressed them to clarify Ali’s status and refute those who spoke against him, like Buraydah, as in Bukhari. The reason, as narrated by Adh-Dhahabi and deemed authentic, is that he went with him to Yemen, saw harshness from him, and reported it to the Prophet (ﷺ). His face changed, and he said: “O Buraydah, am I not more entitled to the believers than themselves?” I said: “Yes, O Messenger of Allah.” He said: “Whoever’s ally I am, Ali is his ally.” (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

Al-Bara’ ibn Azib and Zayd ibn Arqam (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated that when the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) stopped 1 at Ghadir Khumm, he took Ali by the hand and said: “Do you not know that I am more entitled to the believers than themselves?” They said: “Yes.” He said: “Do you not know that I am more entitled to every believer than himself?” They said: “Yes.” He said: “O Allah, whoever’s ally 2 I am, Ali is his ally. O Allah, support those who support him and oppose those who oppose him.” Umar met him afterward and said: “Congratulations, O Ibn Abi Talib! You have become the ally of every believing man and woman.” [Narrated by Ahmad]

Notes /
English notes

1 His statement “when he stopped”: meaning on his return from the Farewell Pilgrimage when his companions were fully gathered. His statement “at Ghadir Khumm”: with a dammah on the kha and tashdid on the mim, the name of a thicket three miles from Al-Juhfah, near a famous pond attributed to it. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

2 His statement “Whoever’s ally I am, Ali is his ally”: The Shia claimed this is an explicit designation of Ali’s caliphate, saying “ally” means the one most entitled to leadership, otherwise there would be no need to gather them. This is one of their strongest arguments, but the scholars of Ahl as-Sunnah refuted it, stating that “ally” means the beloved, and he (may Allah honor his face) is our master and beloved. It has other meanings, such as supporter, as mentioned earlier, so it is not an explicit designation, let alone a clear one. Even if it meant the one most entitled to leadership, it refers to wealth, otherwise it would imply he was the imam during the Prophet’s lifetime, which is not the case. It must mean when the pledge of allegiance is given to him, which does not contradict the precedence of the three imams, as there was a consensus among those whose opinion counts, including Ali. His silence on using this as evidence until his caliphate indicates he knew it was not a designation for his caliphate immediately after the Prophet’s departure. Ali (may Allah honor his face) himself stated that no one, including himself, was explicitly designated. Moreover, this Hadith is ahad and disputed in authenticity, so how could the Shia oppose the consensus requiring mutawatir narrations for imamate? This is a clear contradiction and an ugly inconsistency. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

English notes

1 His statement “In you is a likeness”: meaning in your case, there is a similarity to Isa from two opposing perspectives of two conflicting groups. His statement “Then he said”: meaning Ali, in a stopped narration. His statement “Two men”: meaning one is a Rafidi and the other a Khariji. His statement “praises me” with a kasrah on the ra and tashdid, meaning praises me for what is not in me, such as preferring me over all companions or prophets or attributing divinity, as the Nusayri sect does. “Hater” was used instead of “excessive” because hatred itself is forbidden, unlike love, which is praiseworthy in its essence.

Riz ibn Hubaish narrated that Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “By the One Who split the seed and created the soul, it is the covenant 1 of the unlettered Prophet (ﷺ) to me that none will love me except a believer, and none will hate me except a hypocrite.” [Narrated by Muslim] Ibn Adi narrated from Anas: “Love for Abu Bakr and Umar is faith, and hatred for them is hypocrisy.”

Notes /
English notes

1 His statement “it is the covenant of the unlettered Prophet (ﷺ) to me”: meaning he emphasized and stressed it to Ali as if it were a covenant. His statement “none will love me” means none will love me with a lawful, appropriate love, without excess or deficiency, excluding the Nusayri and Khariji, except a believer, meaning one with complete faith. Thus, one who loves him but hates the two Shaykhs, for example, does not love him with a lawful love. His statement “except a hypocrite” means in reality or by ruling. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

Notes /
English notes

1 His statement “O Allah, bring to me the most beloved of Your creation, etc.”: Imam At-Turbashti said: We do not, by Allah’s grace, deny Ali’s virtue, precedence, early Islam, and closeness to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) due to his near kinship and religious brotherhood. We hold to his love more firmly and rightly than the extremists claim. However, we do not overlook establishing such Hadiths in their proper context, fearing distortion by extremists, misinterpretation by the ignorant, or fabrication by falsifiers. This is a matter we are commanded to preserve and defend. It is incumbent upon us to support the truth and prioritize honesty in it. This Hadith is exploited by innovators, who use it to challenge Abu Bakr’s caliphate, which is the first ruling the Muslims unanimously agreed upon and the strongest pillar upholding the religion after the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). We say, with Allah’s guidance: This Hadith does not oppose what necessitates Abu Bakr’s precedence and superiority, supported by authentic narrations and the companions’ consensus, due to its chain. There is debate among narrators about it, and it is not permissible to interpret such narrations in a way that contradicts consensus, especially since the companion narrating it was part of this consensus, remained steadfast in it throughout his life, and no contradiction is reported from him. If this Hadith is authentic from him, it should be interpreted in a way that does not negate his belief or contradict what is more authentic in text and chain. It should be understood as: “Bring to me one of the most beloved of Your creation to You,” including others favored by the nation’s consensus. This is like saying: “So-and-so is the wisest and best of people,” meaning one of the wisest and best. What clarifies that interpreting it as absolute is impermissible is that the Prophet (ﷺ) is among Allah’s creation, and it is not permissible for Ali to be more beloved to Allah than him. If it is said: That is known from the essence of Sharia, we say: What we discuss is also known from authentic texts and the nation’s consensus. Thus, this Hadith is interpreted as we mentioned, or as meaning the most beloved of his kin and relatives. The Prophet (ﷺ) often spoke generally while intending specificity or used broad terms while meaning restriction, which the discerning understand from the context, time, or matter at hand. Ali al-Qari said: The appropriate interpretation here is the first, similar to Hadiths stating “the best of deeds” for matters that cannot be combined unless understood as “among the best.” (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

English

Sahl ibn Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said on the day 1 of Khaybar: “Tomorrow, I will give the flag to a man through whom Allah will grant victory. He loves Allah and His Messenger, and Allah and His Messenger love him.” When morning came, the people went to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), each hoping to receive it. He said: “Where is Ali ibn Abi Talib?” They said: “He is complaining of his eyes, O Messenger of Allah.” He said: “Send for him.” He was brought, and the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) spat in his eyes and prayed for him, and he was healed as if he had never been in pain. He gave him the flag. Ali said: “O Messenger of Allah, shall I fight them until they become like us?” He said: “Proceed calmly until you reach their courtyard, then invite them to Islam and inform them of their obligations to Allah. By Allah, if Allah guides one man through you, it is better for you than possessing red camels.” [Agreed Upon] In a narration by Ahmad from Ali: “I never suffered eye pain after the Prophet (ﷺ) spat in my eyes.”

Notes /
English notes

1 His statement “the day of Khaybar”: meaning the last day of the siege, as in Bukhari, when it was the evening of the night before Allah granted victory in the morning. His statement “each hoping”: meaning they wished to receive it, the flag being a sign of victory. The pronoun in “hoping” is plural due to the meaning of “each,” while “receive it” is singular due to its wording. This contains a subtlety: the hope was universal, but the granting was not. His statement “Where is Ali ibn Abi Talib”: as if he was surprised by his absence in such a situation, especially after saying: “I will give the flag…” and all the people attended, hoping to receive that promise. His statement “until they become like us”: meaning until they embrace Islam. His statement “calmly”: with a kasrah and sukun, meaning with gentleness and ease. His statement “inform them of their obligations to Allah in it”: meaning in Islam, with an omitted phrase or implied clause, such as: “If they refuse, seek jizyah; if they refuse, fight them until they submit truly or by ruling.” It means they submit. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

1 His statement “at the earliest dawn”: meaning at the beginning of its time. His statement “I would say: Peace be upon you, O Prophet of Allah”: meaning a greeting for permission. Hafiz al-Asqalani said: This Hadith is hasan, not sahih as Al-Hakim claimed, nor fabricated as Ibn al-Jawzi claimed.

Notes /
English notes

1 His statement “and Ali is its gate”: At-Tibi said: The Shia may claim this metaphor means that acquiring knowledge and wisdom is exclusive to him, not extending to others except through him, as one enters a house through its door, as Allah said: “Enter houses through their doors” [Qur’an 2:189]. There is no evidence for them in this, as the house of Paradise is not broader than the house of wisdom, and it has eight gates. The meaning is that Ali is one of its gates, but specifying him indicates a form of honor, which is true, as he is greater and more knowledgeable than some companions. Evidence that all companions are like gates is the statement: “My companions are like stars; whichever you follow, you are guided,” hinting at the varying degrees of their guiding light. This is confirmed by the fact that the Tabi’un took various religious sciences, Qur’an recitation, exegesis, Hadith, and fiqh, from other companions besides Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). Thus, the role of gate is not exclusive to him, except perhaps in judicial matters, as it is narrated about him: “He is the best of you in judgment,” just as it is said of Abu Bakr: “He is the best of you in recitation,” of Zayd ibn Thabit: “He is the best of you in inheritance laws,” and of Mu’adh ibn Jabal: “He is the most knowledgeable of you in halal and haram.” In Al-Kawkab ad-Durri, it is said: His statement “I am the house of wisdom” refers to esoteric knowledge, as most chains of transmission end with Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). Its marginal note says: This is the most appropriate and beneficial interpretation, supported by observation, indicating that those seeking the sciences of wisdom and realities should follow the chain of spiritual masters. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: “The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) called Ali on the day 1 of Ta’if and spoke privately with him. The people said: ‘His private conversation with his cousin was long.’ The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘I did not initiate the private conversation 2, but Allah did.’” [Narrated by At-Tirmidhi]

Notes /
English notes

1 His statement “the day of Ta’if”: The commentator said: Meaning the day the Prophet (ﷺ) sent Ali to Ta’if, and he spoke privately with him, from the verb of private conversation, meaning he confided in him. “The people said”: meaning the hypocrites or common companions. (As stated in Al-Mirqat) 2 His statement “I did not initiate the private conversation, but Allah did”: meaning I conveyed to him what Allah commanded me to convey in private. Thus, Allah initiated the conversation, not me. This is similar to Allah’s statement: “You did not throw when you threw, but Allah threw” [Qur’an 8:17]. It appears that the matter discussed privately was worldly secrets related to religious news, such as matters of expeditions. This is supported by Bukhari’s narration where Ali (may Allah honor his face) was asked: “Do you have anything not in the Qur’an?” He said: “By the One Who split the seed and created the soul, we have nothing but what is in the Qur’an, except understanding given to a man in his Book and what is in the document.” It was asked: “What is in the document?” He said: “Reason and freeing captives.” (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

Abu Sa’id (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said to Ali: “O Ali, it is not permissible 1 for anyone to be in a state of janabah in this mosque except me or you.” Ali ibn al-Mundhir said: I asked Sirar ibn Surad: “What is the meaning of this Hadith?” He said: “It is not permissible for anyone to pass through it in a state of janabah except me or you.” [Narrated by At-Tirmidhi, who said: This Hadith is hasan gharib]

Notes /
English notes

1 His statement “it is not permissible for anyone to be in a state of janabah”: with a dammah on the first letter and kasrah on the nun. At-Tibi said: It appears that “to be in a state of janabah” is the subject of “it is not permissible,” and “in this mosque” is its adverbial phrase. “Except me and you” is in the accusative as an exception. His statement “it is not permissible for anyone to pass through it in a state of janabah except me and you” is because their homes’ entrances specifically opened into the mosque. At-Tibi said: The reference to “this mosque” indicates a special ruling not applicable to other mosques, as the door of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and Ali’s door opened into the mosque. This is supported by the Hadith of Ibn Abbas: “He ordered the doors closed except Ali’s door.” (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) ordered 1 the closing of the doors except Ali’s door. [Narrated by At-Tirmidhi, who said: This Hadith is gharib] In an agreed-upon narration from Abu Sa’id (may Allah be pleased with him), the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “No door 2 shall remain in the mosque except it be closed, except Abu Bakr’s door.”

Notes /
English notes

1 His statement “ordered the closing of the doors except Ali’s door”: Hence, he said: “It is not permissible for anyone to be in a state of janabah in this mosque except me or you.” (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

2 His statement “No door shall remain”: with a fathah on the first letter and a nun for emphasis. Some narrated it with a dammah on the first letter, which is clear. His statement “except it be closed” with a dammah on the sad. In Malik’s narration, “khuwwah” is used instead of “door,” meaning a small opening in the wall for light, not necessarily high. When low, it allows passage for quicker access to a desired place, which is meant here. “Door” is used broadly. His statement “except Abu Bakr’s door” is an empty exception, meaning: Do not leave any door unclosed except Abu Bakr’s door, so leave it unclosed. Al-Khattabi, Ibn Battal, and others said: This Hadith clearly indicates Abu Bakr’s distinction, strongly hinting at his entitlement to the caliphate, especially since it is established that this occurred at the end of the Prophet’s life when he ordered them to let only Abu Bakr lead them in prayer. Al-Ayni said: What is narrated from Ibn Abbas, “Close the doors except Ali’s door,” At-Tirmidhi said is gharib. Bukhari said: The Hadith “except Abu Bakr’s door” is more authentic. Al-Hakim said: The Hadith “except Ali’s door” was uniquely narrated by Muskin ibn Bukayr. Ibn Asakir said: It is a mistake, followed by Ibrahim ibn al-Mukhtar. Ibn al-Jawzi claimed it was fabricated by the Rawafid to counter Abu Bakr’s Hadith, but Shaykh Ibn Hajar refuted him, saying he erred gravely. The reconciliation is possible: the order to close the doors occurred twice. The first time, Ali was excepted when he said: “It is not permissible for anyone to pass through this mosque in a state of janabah except me or you,” before his illness. The second time, Abu Bakr was excepted during his terminal illness. The second involved khuwwahs, and the first involved actual doors. This requires interpreting Ali’s case as a literal door and Abu Bakr’s as a metaphorical door, meaning a khuwwah. Thus, when ordered to close the doors, they closed them and created khuwwahs. This reconciliation was mentioned by At-Tahawi, Al-Kalabadhi, and others. (As stated in At-Tawshih and Al-Mirqat)

Urwah ibn az-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that a man spoke ill of Ali ibn Abi Talib in Umar’s presence. Umar said to him: “Do you know the occupant of this grave? This is Muhammad ibn Abdullah ibn Abdul-Muttalib. Do not mention Ali 1 except with good, for if you diminish him, you harm the occupant of this grave (ﷺ).” [Narrated by Ahmad in Al-Manaqib]

Notes /
English notes

1 His statement “Do not mention Ali except with good”: The author of Al-Mishkat said: He is Amir al-Mu’minin Ali ibn Abi Talib al-Qurashi, known as Abu al-Hasan and Abu Turab. He was, in most opinions, the first male to embrace Islam. His age at that time is disputed: some say fifteen, others eight, others ten. He witnessed all battles with the Prophet (ﷺ) except Tabuk, where he was left behind for his family, and in which he said to him: “Are you not pleased to be to me as Harun was to Musa?” He was swarthy, with large eyes, closer to short than tall, with a prominent belly, abundant hair, broad beard, bald, and white-haired. He became caliph on the day Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) departed from this world, Friday, the 18th of Dhu al-Hijjah, year 35. He was struck by Abdul Rahman Muljam al-Muradi in Kufa on the morning of Friday, the 17th of Ramadan, year 40, and departed from this world three nights later. He was washed by his sons Hasan and Husayn and Abdullah ibn Ja’far (may Allah be pleased with them), prayed over by Hasan, and buried at dawn. He was 63, or 65, or 70, or 58 years old, with his caliphate lasting four years, nine months, and some days. Many narrated from him, including his sons Hasan, Husayn, Muhammad, and numerous companions and Tabi’un. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

1 The statement “Virtues of the Ten Promised Paradise”: This implies that the most virtuous of the companions after the four caliphs are the remaining six of the ten, as explicitly stated by As-Suyuti in An-Naqaya. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
