1

They ask you ˹O Prophet˺ regarding the spoils of war. Say, “Their distribution is decided by Allah and His Messenger. So be mindful of Allah, settle your affairs, and obey Allah and His Messenger if you are ˹true˺ believers.”

They ask thee (O Muhammad) of the spoils of war. Say: The spoils of war belong to Allah and the messenger, so keep your duty to Allah, and adjust the matter of your difference, and obey Allah and His messenger, if ye are (true) believers.

HEY WILL ASK thee about the spoils of war. Say: "All spoils of war belong to God and the Apostle." Remain, then, conscious of God, and keep alive the bonds of brotherhood among yourselves, and pay heed unto God and His Apostle, if you are [truly] believers!

(O beloved Prophet) they ask you concerning the spoils. Say you, 'the spoils belong to Allah and the Messenger; then fear Allah and set things right among yourselves, and obey Allah and His Messenger, if you believe.

(O Esteemed Messenger!) They ask you about the spoils of war. Say: ‘The spoils belong to Allah and the Messenger (blessings and peace be upon him). So, fear Allah and keep your mutual matters set aright, and obey Allah and His Messenger if you are believers.

2

The ˹true˺ believers are only those whose hearts tremble at the remembrance of Allah, whose faith increases when His revelations are recited to them, and who put their trust in their Lord.

They only are the (true) believers whose hearts feel fear when Allah is mentioned, and when His revelations are recited unto them they increase their faith, and who trust in their Lord;

Believers are only they whose hearts tremble with awe whenever God is mentioned, and whose faith is strengthened whenever His messages are conveyed unto them, and who in their Sustainer place their trust -

Only they are believers whose hearts tremble when Allah is mentioned, and when His Signs are recited to them, their faith get increased and upon their Lord, they put their trust.

The believers are only those whose hearts, when Allah is mentioned (before them), are filled with awe (at the very idea of Allah’s Greatness and Might). And when His Revelations are recited to them, they (the ecstatic, delightful, sweet and sublime Words of the Beloved) increase their faith, and they (maintain) their trust in their Lord alone (under all circumstances, and do not look towards anyone other than Him)

3

˹They are˺ those who establish prayer and donate from what We have provided for them.

Who establish worship and spend of that We have bestowed on them.

those who are constant in prayer and spend on others out of what We provide for them as sustenance:

Those who establish prayer and spend something of what We have provided them.

(They) are those who establish Prayer, and spend (in the cause of Allah) out of whatever We have bestowed upon them

4

It is they who are the true believers. They will have elevated ranks, forgiveness, and an honourable provision from their Lord.

Those are they who are in truth believers. For them are grades (of honour) with their Lord, and pardon, and a bountiful provision.

it is they, they who are truly believers! Theirs shall be great dignity in their Sustainer's sight, and forgiveness of sins, and a most excellent sustenance.

It is these the true Muslims. For them are grades with their Lord and forgiveness and an honourable provision.

It is they who are (in fact) the true believers. For them are (high) ranks with their Lord and forgiveness and an honourable provision

5

Similarly, when your Lord brought you ˹O Prophet˺ out of your home for a just cause, a group of believers was totally against it.

Even as thy Lord caused thee (Muhammad) to go forth from thy home with the Truth, and lo! a party of the believers were averse (to it).

EVEN AS thy Sustainer brought thee forth from thy home [to fight] in the cause of the truth, although some of the believers were averse to it,

As (O beloved Prophet)! Your Lord brought you forth from your house with truth, and undoubtedly, a group of Muslim was unhappy over it.

(O Beloved!) As your Lord brought you forth from your home (to fight) for (the great cause of) truth, whilst a section of the believers was unhappy (about it)

6

They disputed with you about the truth after it had been made clear, as if they were being driven to death with their eyes wide open.

Disputing with thee of the Truth after it had been made manifest, as if they were being driven to death visible.

[so, too,] they would argue with thee about the truth [itself] after it had become manifest - just as if they were being driven towards death and beheld it with their very eyes.

They were disputing with you about the truth after it has become clear, as if they are being driven towards death with their eyes open.

They started disputing with you about the cause of truth even after disclosure (of the good news that help from Allah would arrive, and the forces of Muhammad [blessings and peace be upon him] would triumph), as if they were being driven towards death and could see (death with their eyes)

7

˹Remember, O believers,˺ when Allah promised ˹to give˺ you the upper hand over either target, you wished to capture the unarmed party. But it was Allah’s Will to establish the truth by His Words and uproot the disbelievers;

And when Allah promised you one of the two bands (of the enemy) that it should be yours, and ye longed that other than the armed one might be yours. And Allah willed that He should cause the Truth to triumph by His words, and cut the root of the disbelievers;

And, lo, God gave you the promise that one of the two [enemy] hosts would fall to you: and you would have liked to seize the less powerful one, whereas it was God's will to prove the truth to be true in accordance with His words, and to wipe out the last remnant of those who denied the truth -

And remember, when Allah promised you that in both these parties, one is for you, and you wished, that you should have that in which there is no rankle, and Allah wished that truth be proved truth by His words and to cut off the root of the infidels.

And (recall the time) when Allah promised you that dominance and victory over one of the two groups of (the disbelievers of Mecca) would certainly be yours. And you desired that the (group) without weapons (the weaker one) should fall into your hands, but Allah willed to establish the truth by His Words and cut off the roots of the disbelievers (i.e., their might and splendour through the Muslims’ victory over the enemy’s bigger and well-equipped troops)

8

to firmly establish the truth and wipe out falsehood—even to the dismay of the wicked.

That He might cause the Truth to triumph and bring vanity to naught, however much the guilty might oppose;

so that He might prove the truth to be true and the false to be false, however hateful this might be to those who were lost in sin.

That He might establish truth as truth and falsify the false, though the guilty might dislike.

So that (the battle of Badr) might establish (through this great victory) the truth as truth and falsehood as false, even though the wicked might dislike (this decisiveness of the armed conflict between the forces of truth and falsehood)

9

˹Remember˺ when you cried out to your Lord for help, He answered, “I will reinforce you with a thousand angels—followed by many others.”

When ye sought help of your Lord and He answered you (saying): I will help you with a thousand of the angels, rank on rank.

Lo! You were praying unto your Sustainer for aid, whereupon He thus responded to you: "I shall, verily, aid you with a thousand angels following one upon' another!"

When you were crying for help from your Lord, then He responded to you that I am going to help you with a series of thousand angels.

(Remember) when you were supplicating your Lord (for support) and He granted your supplication (and said:) ‘I am going to help you with a thousand angels coming in succession.

10

And Allah made this a sign of victory and reassurance to your hearts. Victory comes only from Allah. Surely Allah is Almighty, All-Wise.

Allah appointed it only as good tidings, and that your hearts thereby might be at rest. Victory cometh only by the help of Allah. Lo! Allah is Mighty, Wise.

And God ordained this only as a glad tiding, and that your hearts should thereby be set at rest-since no succour can come from any save God: verily, God is almighty, wise!

And Allah did this but for your pleasure and in order that your hearts might find contentment; and there is no help but from Allah undoubtedly; Allah is Dominant, Wise.

And Allah made this (form of help) merely good news in order that your hearts are reassured thereby. And (in truth) there is no (other) help except the help from Allah. Indeed, Allah alone is Almighty, Most Wise

11

˹Remember˺ when He caused drowsiness to overcome you, giving you serenity. And He sent down rain from the sky to purify you, free you from Satan’s whispers, strengthen your hearts, and make ˹your˺ steps firm.

When He made the slumber fall upon you as a reassurance from him and sent down water from the sky upon you, that thereby He might purify you, and remove from you the fear of Satan, and make strong your hearts and firm (your) feet thereby.

[Remember how it was] when He caused inner calm to enfold you, as an assurance from Him, and sent down upon you water from the skies, so that He might purify you thereby and free you from Satan's unclean whisperings and strengthen your hearts and thus make firm your steps.

When He covered you with drowsiness, it was a security from Himself, and sent down water upon you from heaven that He might cleanse you therewith and remove from you the filth of the devil (Satan) and might give courage to your hearts and make your steps firm therewith.

(Remember) when He brought upon you drowsiness to (provide you a feeling) feeling of peace and security from Himself and sent down upon you water from the heavens to provide you (inward and outward) purity by that and remove from you the filth of Satan’s (heretic suspicions) and invigorate your hearts with (the strength of certitude) and with that make your feet (unshakably) firm

12

˹Remember, O Prophet,˺ when your Lord revealed to the angels, “I am with you. So make the believers stand firm. I will cast horror into the hearts of the disbelievers. So strike their necks and strike their fingertips.”

When thy Lord inspired the angels, (saying): I am with you. So make those who believe stand firm. I will throw fear into the hearts of those who disbelieve. Then smite the necks and smite of them each finger.

Lo! Thy Sustainer inspired the angels [to convey this His message to the believers]: "I am with you!" [And He commanded the angels:] "And, give firmness unto those who have attained to faith [with these words from Me]: `I shall cast terror into the hearts of those who are bent on denying the truth; strike, then, their necks, [O believers,] and strike off every one of their finger-tips!"

When (O beloved Prophet) your Lord was revealing to the angles that, 'I am with you,' keep ye firm the Muslims. Soon I shall cast terror into the hearts of the infidels, then strike above the necks of the infidels and strike off every finger tips of them.

(O Esteemed Beloved! Also recall the majestic sight of your glory) when (on the occasion of the battle of Badr) your Lord revealed to the angels the message: ‘I am (also) with you (to support the Companions of the Messenger). So, keep the believers firm-footed and steadfast (by good news and support); I will cast awesomeness (of Muhammad’s forces [blessings and peace be upon him]) into the hearts of the (aggressing) disbelievers right now. So, strike at the nape of (the combatant disbelievers’) necks and crush all their tendons and joints (during the war, in response to their plan and war strategy against you).

13

This is because they defied Allah and His Messenger. And whoever defies Allah and His Messenger, then ˹know that˺ Allah is surely severe in punishment.

That is because they opposed Allah and His messenger. Whoso opposeth Allah and His messenger, (for him) lo! Allah is severe in punishment.

This, because they have cut themselves off from God and His Apostle: and as for him who cuts himself off from God and His Apostle - verily, God is severe in retribution.

This is because, they opposed Allah and His Messenger, and whosoever opposes Allah and His Messenger, then undoubtedly, and severe is the torment of Allah.

That is because they defied Allah and His Messenger (blessings and peace be upon him). And he who defies Allah and His Messenger (blessings and peace be upon him), then surely Allah will seize (him) with severe torment

14

That ˹worldly punishment˺ is yours, so taste it! Then the disbelievers will suffer the torment of the Fire.

That (is the award), so taste it, and (know) that for disbelievers is the torment of the Fire.

This [for you, O enemies of God]! Taste it, then, [and know] that suffering through fire awaits those who deny the truth!

This tastes it then and knows that for the infidels is the torment of the Fire.

This is (the torment in this world), so taste it (first), and surely there is (another) torment of Hell (as well) for the disbelievers (in the Hereafter)

15

O believers! When you face the disbelievers in battle, never turn your backs to them.

O ye who believe! When ye meet those who disbelieve in battle, turn not your backs to them.

O YOU who have attained to faith! When you meet in battle those who are bent on denying the truth, advancing in great force, do not turn your backs on them:

'O believers! When you encounter the infidels in the battlefield, turn not your backs to them.

O believers! When you combat the disbelievers (in the battlefield), never turn your backs on them, (even if they are) a large army

16

And whoever does so on such an occasion—unless it is a manoeuvre or to join their own troops—will earn the displeasure of Allah, and their home will be Hell. What an evil destination!

Whoso on that day turneth his back to them, unless manoeuvring for battle or intent to join a company, he truly hath incurred wrath from Allah, and his habitation will be hell, a hapless journey's end.

for, whoever on that day turns his back on them-unless it be in a battle manoeuvre or in an endeavour to join another troop [of the believers] - shall indeed have earned the burden of God's condemnation, and his goal shall be hell: and how vile a journey's end!

And whosoever will turn his back to them that day, but for practising the art of war or for the sake of joining his company, then he returns in the wrath of Allah and his abode is Hell, and what an evil place is to return to.

And he who turns his back on them that day, except he who is maneuvering in the fight, or he who wants to join one of his own troops (for support), certainly he returns with the wrath of Allah and Hell is his abode and that is (the most) evil abode

17

It was not you ˹believers˺ who killed them, but it was Allah Who did so. Nor was it you ˹O Prophet˺ who threw ˹a handful of sand at the disbelievers˺, but it was Allah Who did so, rendering the believers a great favour. Surely Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.

Ye (Muslims) slew them not, but Allah slew them. And thou (Muhammad) threwest not when thou didst throw, but Allah threw, that He might test the believers by a fair test from Him. Lo! Allah is Hearer, Knower.

And yet, [O believers,] it was not you who slew the enemy, but it was God who slew them; and it was not thou who cast [terror into them, O Prophet], when thou didst cast it, but it was God who cast it: and [He did all this] in order that He might test the believers by a goodly test of His Own or daining. Verily, God is all-hearing, all-knowing!

Therefore you did not slay them, but Allah slew them. And O beloved Prophet! The dust that you did throw, you did not throw, but Allah threw, and in order that He might confer on the Muslim a better reward than it. Undoubtedly, Allah is Hearing, Knowing.

(O soldiers of the Army of Islam!) It is not you who killed the disbelievers (who initiated war against you) but it is Allah Who killed them, and, (O Glorious Beloved,) when you smote (them with pebbles), it was not you who smote them, but Allah smote, (so) that He confers upon the believers great favours from Him. Allah is indeed All-Hearing, All-Knowing

18

As such, Allah frustrates the evil plans of the disbelievers.

That (is the case); and (know) that Allah (it is) Who maketh weak the plan of disbelievers.

This [was God's purpose] -and also [to show] that God renders vain the artful schemes of those who deny the truth.

This, take it and with it is this that Allah is the weakener of the plot of the infidels.

This is (one favour and bestowal), and (the other is that) Allah does weaken the plots and deceitful strategies of the disbelievers

19

If you ˹Meccans˺ sought judgment, now it has come to you. And if you cease, it will be for your own good. But if you persist, We will persist. And your forces—no matter how numerous they might be—will not benefit you whatsoever. For Allah is certainly with the believers.

(O Qureysh!) If ye sought a judgment, now hath the judgment come unto you. And if ye cease (from persecuting the believers) it will be better for you, but if ye return (to the attack) We also shall return. And your host will avail you naught, however numerous it be, and (know) that Allah is with the believers (in His Guidance).

If you have been praying for victory, [O believers] - victory has now indeed come unto you. And if you abstain [from sinning], it will be for your own good; but if you revert to it, We shall revoke [Our promise of aid] - and never will your community be of any avail to you, however great its numbers: for, behold, God is [only] with those who believe!

'O infidels! If you demand judgement, then this judgement has indeed come to you, And if you desist, it is better for you, but if you again make mischief, then We shall again punish you, and your party shall avail you not, however, numerous it be and with it is this that Allah is with the muslims.

(O disbelievers!) If you sought a decisive victory, then the victory (of the truth) has certainly reached you. It will be best for you if you desist (even now). But if you opt for the same (mischief), We shall (also) afflict you with the same (punishment) and your army, may it be of any large size, will not be of any avail to you. And Allah is surely on the side of the believers

20

O believers! Obey Allah and His Messenger and do not turn away from him while you hear ˹his call˺.

O ye who believe! Obey Allah and His messenger, and turn not away from him when ye hear (him speak).

[Hence,] O you who have attained to faith, pay heed unto God and His Apostle, and do not turn away from Him now that you hear [His message];

'O believers! Obey Allah ' and His Messenger, and turn not away from him after hearing him.

O believers! Obey Allah and His Messenger (blessings and peace be upon him) and do not turn away from him whilst you are hearing

21

Do not be like those who say, “We hear,” but in fact they are not listening.

Be not as those who say, we hear, and they hear not.

and be not like those who say, "We have heard", the while they do not hearken.

And be not like those who say, 'We hear, and they hear not.

And do not be like those who said (by way of betraying): ‘We have heard,’ whereas they do not hear

22

Indeed, the worst of all beings in the sight of Allah are the ˹wilfully˺ deaf and dumb, who do not understand.

Lo! the worst of beasts in Allah's sight are the deaf, the dumb, who have no sense.

Verily, the vilest of all creatures in the sight of God are those deaf, those dumb ones who do not use their reason.

Undoubtedly, the worst of animals in the sight of Allah are those who are the deaf and dumb who have no sense.

Surely, the worst of the living creatures in the sight of Allah are the deaf and the dumb who (neither listen to nor speak the truth and) also do not understand (the truth)

23

Had Allah known any goodness in them, He would have certainly made them hear. ˹But˺ even if He had made them hear, they would have surely turned away heedlessly.

Had Allah known of any good in them He would have made them hear, but had He made them hear they would have turned away, averse.

For, if God had seen any good in them, He would certainly have made them hear: but [as it is,] even if He had made them hear, they would surely have turned away in their obstinacy.

And if Allah had known any good in them, He would have caused them to listen. And if He had made them hear, even then in the end, they would have turned away, turning their faces.

And had Allah known even a little (inclination towards) good in them, He would (certainly) have made them hear. But (their state of mind is such that) if He makes them hear (the truth), they will (even then) turn away, and they are those who are averse (to the truth)

24

O believers! Respond to Allah and His Messenger when he calls you to that which gives you life. And know that Allah stands between a person and their heart, and that to Him you will all be gathered.

O ye who believe! Obey Allah, and the messenger when He calleth you to that which quickeneth you, and know that Allah cometh in between the man and his own heart, and that He it is unto Whom ye will be gathered.

O you who have attained to faith! Respond to the call of God and the Apostle whenever he calls you unto that which will give you life; and know that God intervenes between man and [the desires of] his heart, and that unto Him you shall be gathered.

'O believers! Respond to the calling of Allah and Messenger, when the Messenger calls you for a thing that will give you life; and know that Allah's command comes between man and his heart's desire and this that you are to be raised towards Him.

O believers! Whenever the Messenger (blessings and peace be upon him) calls you for some assignment that brings you (eternal) life, present yourselves (immediately), responding to (both) Allah and His Messenger (blessings and peace be upon him) with submissiveness and obedience. And bear in mind that Allah intervenes between man and his heart (with a Glory of exclusive nearness), and that all of you will (ultimately) be gathered towards Him

25

Beware of a trial that will not only affect the wrongdoers among you. And know that Allah is severe in punishment.

And guard yourselves against a chastisement which cannot fall exclusively on those of you who are wrong-doers, and know that Allah is severe in punishment.

And beware of that temptation to evil which does not befall only those among you who are bent on denying the truth, to the exclusion of others; and know that God is severe in retribution.

And remain fearing that calamity which will never fall exclusively upon those among you who do wrong. And know that severe is the torment of Allah.

And fear the plague which will not afflict exclusively those who are the tyrants amongst you (but its victims will also include those who are accomplices in tyranny or who remain indifferent to it). And bear in mind that Allah is Severe in inflicting torment

26

Remember when you had been vastly outnumbered and oppressed in the land, constantly in fear of attacks by your enemy, then He sheltered you, strengthened you with His help, and provided you with good things so perhaps you would be thankful.

And remember, when ye were few and reckoned feeble in the land, and were in fear lest men should extirpate you, how He gave you refuge, and strengthened you with His help, and made provision of good things for you, that haply ye might be thankful.

And remember the time when you were few [and] helpless on earth, fearful lest people do away with you - whereupon He sheltered you, and strengthened you with His succour, and provided for you sustenance out of the good things of life, so that you might have cause to be grateful.

And remember, when you were few down trodden in the land, and were fearful, lest the people should snatch you away, then He gave you shelter, and strengthened you with His help, and provide you with good things, that haply you might be thankful.

And (call to mind the time) when (numerically) you were small (i.e., in the minority, in the Meccan period,) and oppressed in the country (i.e., economically unstable and victims of exploitation). You were (also) afraid that (the powerful) people would snatch you away (i.e., socially too you were neither free nor secure). So, (after migration to Medina,) He (Allah) provided for you a free and secure abode, and strengthened you with His help (through Islamic rule and power) and supplied you with sustenance of pure and wholesome things (through brotherhood, spoils of war and a free economy) so that you may give thanks to Allah (by means of absolute submission to Allah’s commands)

27

O believers! Do not betray Allah and the Messenger, nor betray your trusts knowingly.

O ye who believe! Betray not Allah and His messenger, nor knowingly betray your trusts.

[Hence,] O you who have attained to faith, do not be false to God and the Apostle, and do not knowingly be false to the trust that has been reposed in you;

'O believers! Betray not Allah and Messenger and nor commit defalcation in your trusts knowingly.

O believers! Do not betray the trust of Allah and His Messenger ([blessings and peace be upon him] in paying them what is their due), nor betray your mutual trusts, whilst you know (the whole truth)

28

And know that your wealth and your children are only a test and that with Allah is a great reward.

And know that your possessions and your children are a test, and that with Allah is immense reward.

and know that your worldly goods and your children are but a trial and a temptation, and that with God there is a tremendous reward.

And know that your wealth and your children are all a trial, and with Allah is the great reward.

And bear in mind that your riches and your children are nothing but a trial, and that with Allah alone lies the highest reward

29

O believers! If you are mindful of Allah, He will grant you a standard ˹to distinguish between right and wrong˺, absolve you of your sins, and forgive you. And Allah is the Lord of infinite bounty.

O ye who believe! If ye keep your duty to Allah, He will give you discrimination (between right and wrong) and will rid you of your evil thoughts and deeds, and will forgive you. Allah is of Infinite Bounty.

O you who have attained to faith! If you remain conscious of God. He will endow you with a standard by which to discern the true from the false, and will efface your bad deeds, and will forgive you your sins: for God is limitless in His great bounty.

'O believers! If you will fear Allah, He will grant you that by which you may be able to distinguish between right and wrong and will remove off your evils and will forgive you. And Allah is owner of great Grace.

O believers! If you adopt the fear of Allah, (then) He will set for you a criterion (and guidance) to distinguish between truth and falsehood, and will wipe out your sins from your (record) and will forgive you. And Allah is the Lord of great bounty

And ˹remember, O Prophet,˺ when the disbelievers conspired to capture, kill, or exile you. They planned, but Allah also planned. And Allah is the best of planners.

And when those who disbelieve plot against thee (O Muhammad) to wound thee fatally, or to kill thee or to drive thee forth; they plot, but Allah (also) plotteth; and Allah is the best of plotters.

AND [remember, O Prophet,] how those who were bent on denying the truth were scheming against thee, in order to restrain thee [from preaching], or to slay thee, or to drive thee away: thus have they [always] schemed: but God brought their scheming to nought-for God is above all schemers.

And (O beloved Prophet)! Remember, when the infidels were plotting against you, to confine you or to slay you or to drive you forth. And they were plotting their own and Allah was devising His Own and Allah's devise is the best.

And when the disbelievers were engaged in hatching conspiracies against you to captivate you or slay you or banish you (from the country on the one side), they were plotting intrigues, and (on the other) Allah was planning His strategy (to thwart their intrigues). And Allah is the Best of the secret planners

Whenever Our revelations are recited to them, they challenge ˹you˺, “We have already heard ˹the recitation˺. If we wanted, we could have easily produced something similar. This ˹Quran˺ is nothing but ancient fables!”

And when Our revelations are recited unto them they say: We have heard. If we wish we can speak the like of this. Lo! this is naught but fables of the men of old.

And whenever Our messages were conveyed to them, they would say, "We have heard [all this] before; if we wanted, we could certainly compose sayings like these [ourselves]: they are nothing but fables of ancient times!"

And when Our verses are recited to them, then they say, 'yes, we have heard', if we wished, we could certainly utter the like of this. It is not, but the stories of the ancients.

And when Our Revelations are recited to them, they say: ‘Of course, we have heard. If we desire, we can also compose Verses analogous to that (Word). These are (nothing) but the (imaginary) tales of the ancients.

32

And ˹remember˺ when they prayed, “O Allah! If this is indeed the truth from You, then rain down stones upon us from the sky or overcome us with a painful punishment.”

And when they said: O Allah! If this be indeed the truth from Thee, then rain down stones on us or bring on us some painful doom!

And, lo, they would say, "O God! If this. be indeed the truth from Thee, then rain down upon us stones from the skies, or inflict [some other] grievous suffering on us!"

And when they said, 'O Allah, if this Quran indeed be the truth from You then rain down upon us stones from heaven or bring down upon us! Any painful chastisement.

And when they said (sarcastically): ‘O Allah! If this (Qur’an) is really the truth from Your side, then rain down upon us stones from the sky (for disobeying it), or seize us with some grievous torment.

33

But Allah would never punish them while you ˹O Prophet˺ were in their midst. Nor would He ever punish them if they prayed for forgiveness.

But Allah would not punish them while thou wast with them, nor will He punish them while they seek forgiveness.

But God did not choose thus to chastise them whip thou [O Prophet] wert still among them, nor would God chastise them when they [might yet] ask for forgiveness.

And Allah is not one to chastise them, till ('O beloved Prophet) you are in their midst. And Allah is not to chastise them, whilst they are begging forgiveness.

And, (in truth, the matter is that) it is not Allah’s Glory to torment them, whilst you (O Venerable Beloved) are also (present) amongst them. Nor would Allah torment them whilst they are engaged in supplicating Him for forgiveness

34

And why should Allah not punish them while they hinder pilgrims from the Sacred Mosque, claiming to be its rightful guardians? None has the right to guardianship except those mindful ˹of Allah˺, but most pagans do not know.

What (plea) have they that Allah should not punish them, when they debar (His servants) from the Inviolable Place of Worship, though they are not its fitting guardians. Its fitting guardians are those only who keep their duty to Allah. But most of them know not.

But what have they [now] in their favour that God should not chastise them-seeing that they bar [the believers] from the Inviolable House of Worship, although they are not its [rightful] guardians? None but the God-conscious can be its guardians: but of this most of these [evildoers] are unaware;

And what have they that Allah should not chastise them, when they are hindering from the sacred mosque, and they are not its guardian. Its guardians are the pious ones only, but most of them know not.

And what might be any other reason that Allah should not punish these (disbelievers of Mecca now after your emigration to Medina), whilst they hinder people from the Sacred Mosque (Ka‘ba), and they do not deserve to be its guardians (or custodians) as well? Its friends (i.e., guardians) are only the righteous people, but most of them do not know (this truth)

35

Their prayer at the Sacred House was nothing but whistling and clapping. So taste the punishment for your disbelief.

And their worship at the (holy) House is naught but whistling and hand-clapping. Therefore (it is said unto them): Taste of the doom because ye disbelieve.

and their prayers before the Temple are nothing but whistling and clapping of hands. Taste then, [O unbelievers,] this chastisement as an outcome of your persistent denial of the truth!

And their prayer at the Holy House is nothing but whistling and clapping. Then taste the torment now, the recompense of their infidelity.

And their (so-called) Prayer at the House of Allah (Ka‘ba) is nothing more than whistling and clapping hands. So taste the torment because you used to disbelieve

36

Surely the disbelievers spend their wealth to hinder others from the Path of Allah. They will continue to spend to the point of regret. Then they will be defeated and the disbelievers will be driven into Hell,

Lo! those who disbelieve spend their wealth in order that they may debar (men) from the way of Allah. They will spend it, then it will become an anguish for them, then they will be conquered. And those who disbelieve will be gathered unto hell,

Behold, those who are bent on denying the truth are spending their riches in order to turn others away from the path of God; and they will go on spending them until they become [a source of] intense regret for them; and then they will be overcome! And those who [until their death] have denied the truth shall be gathered unto hell,

Undoubtedly, the infidels spend their wealth to prevent from the path of Allah, they will spend it now, then again they will regret on it, then will be overpowered. The infidels shall be gathered towards hell.

Undoubtedly, the disbelievers spend their wealth (in order to influence and) prevent people from the path of Allah’s Din (Religion). So, presently, they will continue spending it, but later (this spending) will become for them a source of regret (i.e., repentance and despondency). They will then be overpowered (by Allah’s seizure), and those who have adopted disbelief will be driven towards Hell

so Allah may separate the evil from the good. He will pile up the evil ones all together and then cast them into Hell. They are the ˹true˺ losers.

That Allah may separate the wicked from the good, The wicked will He place piece upon piece, and heap them all together, and consign them unto hell. Such verily are the losers.

so that God might separate the bad from the good, and join the bad with one another, and link them all together [within His condemnation], and then place them in hell. They, they are the lost!

In order that Allah may separate the impure from the pure, and putting the impure one upon the other, all piling them together cast them into the hell it is they who are the losers.

So that Allah separates the impious from the pious and puts the impious (i.e., filthy characters) one over the other and heaps them all up together and then casts this (heap) into Hell. It is they who are the losers

Tell the disbelievers that if they desist, their past will be forgiven. But if they persist, then they have an example in those destroyed before them.

Tell those who disbelieve that if they cease (from persecution of believers) that which is past will be forgiven them; but if they return (thereto) then the example of the men of old hath already gone (before them, for a warning).

Tell those who are bent on denying the truth that if they desist, all that is past shall be forgiven them; but if they revert [to their wrongdoing], let them remember what happened to the like of them in times gone by.

Say you to the infidels, if they now desist, that which is past will be forgiven. But if they repeat the same then the precedence of the former people has already gone.

Say to those who disbelieve: ‘If they desist (from their blasphemous acts), then the (sins) which have passed will be forgiven. But if they repeat the same, then the pattern of (multiple punishments given to) the forerunners has passed. (They will also be dealt with the same way.)

Fight against them until there is no more persecution—and ˹your˺ devotion will be entirely to Allah. But if they desist, then surely Allah is All-Seeing of what they do.

And fight them until persecution is no more, and religion is all for Allah. But if they cease, then lo! Allah is Seer of what they do.

And fight against them until there is no more oppression and all worship is devoted to God alone. And if they desist-behold, God sees all that they do;

And fight them on till there remains not any mischief and the entire religion be only of Allah; then if they desist, then Allah is seeing their deeds.

And, (O people of truth,) continue your fight against these (chieftains of oppression and terrorism for the establishment of enduring peace), until there does not (remain) any disruption and Din (the system of compliance with law) is devoted to Allah alone. And if they desist, then Allah surely sees well (the action) that they are accomplishing

And if they do not comply, then know that Allah is your Protector. What an excellent Protector, and what an excellent Helper!

And if they turn away, then know that Allah is your Befriender - a Transcendent Patron, a Transcendent Helper!

and if they turn away [from righteousness], know that God is your Lord Supreme: [and] how excellent is this Lord Supreme, and how excellent this Giver of Succour!

And if they turn back then know that Allah is your Protector, what an excellent Protector and what an excellent Helper.

But if they turn away (from obeying Allah), then know that surely Allah alone is your Excellent Protector (i.e., Patron); what an Excellent Protector (Patron) and what an Excellent Helper

Know that whatever spoils you take, one-fifth is for Allah and the Messenger, his close relatives, orphans, the poor, and ˹needy˺ travellers, if you ˹truly˺ believe in Allah and what We revealed to Our servant on that decisive day when the two armies met ˹at Badr˺. And Allah is Most Capable of everything.

And know that whatever ye take as spoils of war, lo! a fifth thereof is for Allah, and for the messenger and for the kinsman (who hath need) and orphans and the needy and the wayfarer, if ye believe in Allah and that which We revealed unto Our slave on the Day of Discrimination, the day when the two armies met. And Allah is Able to do all things.

AND KNOW that whatever booty you acquire [in war], one-fifth thereof belongs to God and the Apostle, and the near of kin, and the orphans, and the needy, and the wayfarer. [This you must observe] if you believe in God and in what We bestowed from on high upon Our servant on the day when the true was distinguished from the false - the day when the two hosts met in battle. And God has the power to will anything.

And know that whatever spoil of war take, then one fifth of it belongs exclusively to Allah and to the Messenger, and to the kindred and the orphans and the needy and the wayfarer, if you have believed in Allah and what We sent down upon Our bondman on the Day of Decision the day when the two armies met. And Allah can do everything.

And bear in mind that whatever spoils of war you seize, a fifth of it is for Allah and the Messenger (blessings and peace be upon him) and (the Messenger’s) kindred and orphans and the needy and the wayfarers, if you believe in Allah, and in that (Revelation) which We sent down on Our (exalted) Servant on the Day of Decision (i.e., discrimination between the truth and falsehood), the day (when) the two armies (of the believers and the disbelievers) encountered (in the battlefield of Badr). And Allah has absolute power over everything

˹Remember˺ when you were on the near side of the valley, your enemy on the far side, and the caravan was below you. Even if the two armies had made an appointment ˹to meet˺, both would have certainly missed it. Still it transpired so Allah may establish what He had destined—that those who were to perish and those who were to survive might do so after the truth had been made clear to both. Surely Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.

When ye were on the near bank (of the valley) and they were on the yonder bank, and the caravan was below you (on the coast plain). And had ye trysted to meet one another ye surely would have failed to keep the tryst, but (it happened, as it did, without the forethought of either of you) that Allah might conclude a thing that must be done; that he who perished (on that day) might perish by a clear proof (of His Sovereignty) and he who survived might survive by a clear proof (of His Sovereignty). Lo! Allah in truth is Hearer, Knower.

[Remember that day] when you were at the near end of the valley [of Badr], and they were at its farthest end, while the caravan was below you. And if you had known that a battle was to take place, you would indeed have refused to accept the challenge: but [the battle was brought about none the less,] so that God might accomplish a thing [which He willed] to be done, [and] that he who would perish might perish in clear evidence of the truth, and that he who would remain alive might live in clear evidence of the truth. And, behold, God is indeed all-hearing, all-knowing.

When you were on the hither side of the valley and the infidels on the yonder side, and the Caravan was below you (On the Coast Plain), and if you would have made any mutual promise, surely you would not have reached on appointed time, but this has happened in order that Allah might fulfil the work which is to be done; so that whoever was to perish might perish with proof; and whoever was to survive might survive with proof. And undoubtedly, Allah is Hearing, Knowing.

(Remember) when you were on the nearer bank of the valley (the Medina side) and they (the disbelievers) were on the farther bank (the other side) and (the mercantile) caravan was below you; and had you made some mutual appointment (to fight), you would certainly have reached there (at the timings) different from (your) appointment. (But Allah brought you face to face, at the same time, without any appointment.) This took place in order that Allah might lead that matter to completion, which was destined to happen, so that he who had to die might die (with a manifest) evidence to that effect, and he who had to survive might continue to live (with a manifest) evidence to that effect (i.e., the evidence be established for all on the veracity of Islam and the Holy Messenger [blessings and peace be upon him]). Allah is surely All-Hearing, All-Knowing

˹Remember, O Prophet,˺ when Allah showed them in your dream as few in number. Had He shown them to you as many, you ˹believers˺ would have certainly faltered and disputed in the matter. But Allah spared you ˹from that˺. Surely He knows best what is ˹hidden˺ in the heart.

When Allah showed them unto thee (O Muhammad) in thy dream as few in number, and if He had shown them to thee as many, ye (Muslims) would have faltered and would have quarrelled over the affair. But Allah saved (you). Lo! He knoweth what is in the breasts (of men).

Lo! God showed them to thee in a dream as few: for, had He shown them to you as many, you would surely have lost heart, and would surely have disagreed with one another about what to do. But God saved [you from this]: verily, He has full knowledge of what is the hearts [of men].

When (O' Beloved Prophet) Allah showed the infidels few to you in your dream. And (O' Muslims) if He had shown them numerous then, certainly you would have shown timidity and would have quarrelled about the matter, but Allah saved you Undoubtedly, He knows the thoughts in the breasts.

(Recall) when Allah showed you in your dream (the army of) the disbelievers as small in number. And if He (Allah) had shown (them) to you as greater in number, then, (O Muslims,) you would have felt dispirited, and would have certainly disputed amongst yourselves on the question (of war). But Allah saved the Muslims (from timidity and mutual discord). Indeed, He is Well Aware of the (secrets of) hearts

44

Then when your armies met, Allah made them appear as few in your eyes, and made you appear as few in theirs, so Allah may establish what He had destined. And to Allah ˹all˺ matters will be returned ˹for judgment˺.

And when He made you (Muslims), when ye met (them), see them with your eyes as few, and lessened you in their eyes, (it was) that Allah might conclude a thing that must be done. Unto Allah all things are brought back.

And so, when you met in battle, He made them appear as few in your eyes -just as He made you appear as of little account in their eyes - so that God might accomplish a thing [which He willed] to be done: for all things go back to God [as their source].

And when at the time of encounter, the infidels were shown to you as few, and made you appear few in their eyes, so that Allah might fulfil the work which, is to be done. And towards 'Allah is the return of all affairs.

And (also remind them of the sight) when He, at the time of encounter (as well), made (the troops of) the disbelievers appear small (just) in your eyes and made you appear small in their eyes (so that both the armies might remain in a heightened state of alert) in order that Allah leads to completion the (total defeat of disbelievers resulting from the full-fledged war) preordained (by Allah). And (eventually) all matters are returned to Allah alone

O believers! When you face an enemy, stand firm and remember Allah often so you may triumph.

O ye who believe! When ye meet an army, hold firm and think of Allah much, that ye may be successful.

[Hence,] O you who have attained to faith, when you meet a host in battle, be firm, and remember God often; so that you might attain to a happy state!

'O believers! When you encounter any army, then stand firm, and remember Allah much, that you may attain the goal.

O believers! When you encounter any (enemy) army, stand firm and remember Allah abundantly so that you may attain to success

Obey Allah and His Messenger and do not dispute with one another, or you would be discouraged and weakened. Persevere! Surely Allah is with those who persevere.

And obey Allah and His messenger, and dispute not one with another lest ye falter and your strength depart from you; but be steadfast! Lo! Allah is with the steadfast.

And pay heed unto God and His Apostle, and do not [allow yourselves to] be at variance with one another, lest you lose heart and your moral strength desert you. And be patient in adversity: for, verily, God is with those who are patient in adversity.

And obey Allah and His Messenger, and dispute not with one another, otherwise you will show timidity, and your tied strength will depart from you and be patient. Verily Allah is with the patient.

And obey Allah and His Messenger (blessings and peace be upon him) and do not quarrel amongst yourselves lest (growing disunited and weak) you become timid and your impact (i.e., power) loses ground (before your enemy). So be steadfast. Surely, Allah is with those who are steadfast

Do not be like those ˹pagans˺ who left their homes arrogantly, only to be seen by people and to hinder others from Allah’s Path. And Allah is Fully Aware of what they do.

Be not as those who came forth from their dwellings boastfully and to be seen of men, and debar (men) from the way of Allah, while Allah is surrounding all they do.

And be not like those [unbelievers] who went forth from their homelands full of self-conceit and a desire to be seen and praised by men for they were trying to turn others away from the path of God -the while God encompassed all their doings [with His might].

And be not like those who came out of their homes, boastfully and to be seen of men, and barring from Allah's way. All their works are under the Control of Allah.

And be not like those who came out of their homes exhibiting false pride and showing off to the people and who hindered (the people) from the path of Allah. And Allah has encompassed (with His Knowledge and Power) all the activities they are doing

And ˹remember˺ when Satan made their ˹evil˺ deeds appealing to them, and said, “No one can overcome you today. I am surely by your side.” But when the two forces faced off, he cowered and said, “I have absolutely nothing to do with you. I certainly see what you do not see. I truly fear Allah, for Allah is severe in punishment.”

And when Satan made their deeds seem fair to them and said: No-one of mankind can conquer you this day, for I am your protector. But when the armies came in sight of one another, he took flight, saying: Lo! I am guiltless of you. Lo! I see that which ye see not. Lo! I fear Allah. And Allah is severe in punishment.

And, lo, Satan made all their doings seem goodly to them, and said, "No one can overcome you this day, for, behold, I shall be your protector!" but as soon as the two hosts came within sight of one another, he turned on his heels and said, "Behold, I am not responsible for you: behold, I see something that you do not see: behold, I fear God-for God is severe in retribution!"

And when the devil (Shaitan) decked their work fair in their sight, and said, 'No man is to prevail against you today, and you are under my protection'. Then when both armies came in front of each other, he ran upon his heels and said 'I am quit of you, I see what you see not, I fear Allah' and severe is the torment of Allah.

And (recall) when Satan made the actions of these (disbelievers) appear attractive to them, and he said (to them): ‘None of the people (can) overpower you today and I am certainly your protector (helper).’ But when both the armies stood (face to face) against each other, he turned on his heels and said: ‘I am indeed averse to you. Certainly, I see what you do not see. Surely, I fear Allah, and Allah is Severe in punishing.

˹Remember˺ when the hypocrites and those with sickness in their hearts said, “These ˹believers˺ are deluded by their faith.” But whoever puts their trust in Allah, surely Allah is Almighty, All-Wise.

When the hypocrites and those in whose hearts is a disease said: Their religion hath deluded these. Whoso putteth his trust in Allah (will find that) lo! Allah is Mighty, Wise.

At the same time, the hypocrites and those in whose hearts was disease were saying, "Their faith has deluded these [believers]!" But he who places his trust in God [knows that], verily, God is almighty, wise.

When the hypocrites and those in whose hearts there is disease used to say these, muslims are proud of their religion'. And whosoever relies upon Allah, then undoubtedly, Allah is Dominant, Wise.

And (also recall) when the hypocrites and those in whose hearts is the disease (of disbelief) were saying: ‘The Din (Religion) of these (Muslims) has made them greatly arrogant.’ But (the truth is that) he who trusts Allah (then Allah is the Sustainer of all his matters). If only you could see when the angels take the souls of the disbelievers, beating their faces and backs, ˹saying,˺ “Taste the torment of burning!

If thou couldst see how the angels receive those who disbelieve, smiting faces and their backs and (saying): Taste the punishment of burning!

AND IF thou couldst but see [how it will be] when He causes those who are bent on denying the truth to die: the angels will strike their faces: and their backs, and [will say]: "Taste suffering through fire

And if you could see, when the Angels take away the souls of the infidels, they, are smiting their faces and. their backs, and taste the torment of burning.

And you (will wonder) if you see (the spectacle) when the angels take away the souls of the disbelievers. They continue striking their faces and backs (with hammers and say): ‘Taste the torment of the Fire (of Hell).

This is ˹the reward˺ for what your hands have done. And Allah is never unjust to ˹His˺ servants.”

This is for that which your own hands have sent before (to the Judgment), and (know) that Allah is not a tyrant to His slaves.

in return for what your own hands have wrought - for, never does God do the least wrong to His creatures!"

This is in recompense of what your hands have sent on ' before and Allah is not unjust unto His bondmen.

This (torment) is in retribution of those (impious acts) which your hands have sent forward, and Allah does not at all do injustice to His servants

Their fate is that of the people of Pharaoh and those before them—they all disbelieved in Allah’s signs, so Allah seized them for their sins. Indeed, Allah is All-Powerful, severe in punishment.

(Their way is) as the way of Pharaoh's folk and those before them; they disbelieved the revelations of Allah, and Allah took them in their sins. Lo! Allah is Strong, severe in punishment.

[To them shall happen.] the like of what happened to Pharaoh's people and those who lived before them: they denied the truth of God's messagesand so God took them to task for their sins. Verily, God is powerful, severe in retribution!

In the manner of people of Firawn (Pharaoh) and those before them they disbelieved in the signs of Allah, then Allah seized them for their sins. Undoubtedly Allah is Strong, Severe in torment

(The case of these disbelievers is also) like (that of) the people of Pharaoh and those who preceded them. They (too) denied the Revelations of Allah. So, Allah seized them (with torment) for their sins. Surely, Allah is Mighty, Severe in afflicting torment

This is because Allah would never discontinue His favour to a people until they discontinue their faith. Surely Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.

That is because Allah never changeth the grace He hath bestowed on any people until they first change that which is in their hearts, and (that is) because Allah is Hearer, Knower.

This, because God would never change the blessings with which He has graced a people unless they change their inner selves: and [know] that God is all-hearing, all-seeing.

This is so because Allah does not change the favour that He has conferred upon a people, until they change themselves; and verily Allah Hears, Knows.

This (torment) is because Allah never changes any blessing that He grants affluently to some people till they change their blessed state themselves (i.e., when they commit ingratitude, disobedience and sins and even lose the sense of loss, they are seized by destruction and devastation). And Allah is indeed All-Hearing, All-Knowing

That was the case with Pharaoh’s people and those before them—they all rejected the signs of their Lord, so We destroyed them for their sins and drowned Pharaoh’s people. They were all wrongdoers.

(Their way is) as the way of Pharaoh's folk and those before them; they denied the revelations of their Lord, so We destroyed them in their sins. And We drowned the folk of Pharaoh. All were evil-doers.

[To those sinners shall happen] the like of what happened to Pharaoh's people and those who lived before them: they gave the lie to their Sustainer's messages - and so We destroyed them in return for their sins, and caused Pharaoh's people to drown: for they were evildoers all.

In the manner of the people of Firawn (Pharaoh) and those before them. They, belied the signs of their Lord then We destroyed them for their sins, and We drowned the people of Firawn, and they were all unjust.

This (torment too) is on the pattern of the people of Pharaoh and those who preceded them: they (also) denied the signs of their Lord. So, We destroyed them due to their sins, and We drowned the people of Pharaoh (in the river). And they all were oppressors

Indeed, the worst of all beings in the sight of Allah are those who persist in disbelief, never to have faith—

Lo! the worst of beasts in Allah's sight are the ungrateful who will not believe.

Verily, the vilest creatures in the sight of God are those who are bent on denying the truth and therefore do not believe.

Undoubtedly, the worst of beasts in the Sight of Allah, are those who committed infidelity and would not believe,

Surely, worse than (even) all the beasts in the sight of Allah are the people who disbelieve. So they do not believe

˹namely˺ those with whom you ˹O Prophet˺ have entered into treaties, but they violate them every time, not fearing the consequences.

Those of them with whom thou madest a treaty, and then at every opportunity they break their treaty, and they keep not duty (to Allah).

AS FOR THOSE with whom thou hast made a covenant, and who thereupon break their covenant on every occasion, not being conscious of God-

Those with whom you had entered into a covenant, then they break their covenant every time and do not fear.

They are the ones from whom you took a promise (many a time), but they break their promise every time and do not fear (Allah)

57

If you ever encounter them in battle, make a fearsome example of them, so perhaps those who would follow them may be deterred.

If thou comest on them in the war, deal with them so as to strike fear in those who are behind them, that haply they may remember.

if thou find them at war [with you], make of them a fearsome example for those who follow them, so that they might take it to heart;

Therefore, if you find them anywhere in war, kill them in such a manner that their remaining ones may be put to flight. Haply they may be admonished.

So if you come upon them in the battlefield, then by killing them (for violating the peace treaty) in an exemplary manner, make those who are behind them (also) run on their heels so that they may learn a lesson of warning

58

And if you ˹O Prophet˺ see signs of betrayal by a people, respond by openly terminating your treaty with them. Surely Allah does not like those who betray.

And if thou fearest treachery from any folk, then throw back to them (their treaty) fairly. Lo! Allah loveth not the treacherous.

or, if thou hast reason to fear treachery from people [with whom thou hast made a covenant], cast it back at them in an equitable manner: for, verily, God does not love the treacherous!

If you fear treachery from any people, throw back to them their covenant on equal basis Undoubtedly, the treacherous are not liked by Allah.

And if you apprehend treachery from a people, then throw their promise back to them on the basis of equality. Indeed, Allah does not like the treacherous

Do not let those disbelievers think they are not within reach. They will have no escape.

And let not those who disbelieve suppose that they can outstrip (Allah's Purpose). Lo! they cannot escape.

And let them not think - those who are bent on denying the truth -that they shall escapee [God]: behold, they can never frustrate [His purpose].

And let the infidels never boast that they have gone out of hand. Undoubtedly, they cannot frustrate.

And let not the disbelievers ever assume that they have escaped (safe and sound). Assuredly, they can never make (Us) powerless

Prepare against them what you ˹believers˺ can of ˹military˺ power and cavalry to deter Allah’s enemies and your enemies as well as other enemies unknown to you but known to Allah. Whatever you spend in the cause of Allah will be paid to you in full and you will not be wronged.

Make ready for them all thou canst of (armed) force and of horses tethered, that thereby ye may dismay the enemy of Allah and your enemy, and others beside them whom ye know not. Allah knoweth them. Whatsoever ye spend in the way of Allah it will be repaid to you in full, and ye will not be wronged.

Hence, make ready against them whatever force and war mounts you are able to muster, so that you might deter thereby the enemies of God, who are your enemies as well, and others besides them of whom you may be unaware, [but] of whom God is aware; and whatever you may expend in God's cause shall be repaid to you in full, and you shall not be wronged.

And keep ready for them the strength as you can, and as many of horses as you can, whereby you may put terror in the hearts of those who are enemies of Allah and of yours and in the hearts of some others, besides them whom you know not; Allah Knows them. And whatever you will spend in the path of Allah, shall be repaid to you in full and in no way you will be in loss.

And, (O Muslims,) muster up as much defence strength as you can (in the form of weapons and equipment of war) and (also formations) of war steeds (i.e., war mounts) to combat them. Cause fear with this (readiness) amongst the enemy of Allah and your enemy, and also those besides them whose (secret enmity) you know not; Allah knows them. And whatever you spend in the way of Allah, you will be paid back in full, and you will not be done any injustice

If the enemy is inclined towards peace, make peace with them. And put your trust in Allah. Indeed, He ˹alone˺ is the All-Hearing, All-Knowing.

And if they incline to peace, incline thou also to it, and trust in Allah. Lo! He, even He, is the Hearer, the Knower.

But if they incline to peace, incline thou to it as well, and place thy trust in God: verily, He alone is all-hearing, all-knowing!

And if they incline towards peace, then incline you also and put trust in Allah. Undoubtedly, He is the One Hearing, Knowing

And if they (the combatant or hostile disbelievers) incline to peace and reconciliation, you also incline to it and put your trust in Allah. Surely, He alone is All-Hearing, All-Knowing

But if their intention is only to deceive you, then Allah is certainly sufficient for you. He is the One Who has supported you with His help and with the believers.

And if they would deceive thee, then lo! Allah is Sufficient for thee. He it is Who supporteth thee with His help and with the believers,

And should they seek but to deceive thee [by their show of peace] - behold, God is enough for thee! He it is who has strengthened thee with His succour, and by giving thee believing followers

If they intend to deceive you, then Allah is sufficient for you. He it is Who gave, strength to you with His help and with Muslims.

And if they seek to deceive you, then surely Allah is Sufficient for you. He is the One Who has given you strength with His help and with the believers

He brought their hearts together. Had you spent all the riches in the earth, you could not have united their hearts. But Allah has united them. Indeed, He is Almighty, All-Wise.

And (as for the believers) hath attuned their hearts. If thou hadst spent all that is in the earth thou couldst not have attuned their hearts, but Allah hath attuned them. Lo! He is Mighty, Wise.

whose hearts He has brought together: [for,] if thou hadst expended all that is on earth, thou couldst not have brought their hearts together [by thyself]: but God did bring them together. Verily, He is almighty, wise.

And He put affection in their hearts. If you had spent all that is in the earth you could not have put affection in their hearts but Allah have united their hearts. Undoubtedly! It is He, Dominant, Wise.

And He (is the One Who) awakened mutual love amongst the hearts of the (Muslims). If you had spent whatever exists in the earth, you could never have inculcated this (love) in their hearts (with all these material resources). But Allah roused that love amongst them (through a spiritual relation). Allah is indeed Almighty, Most Wise

O Prophet! Motivate the believers to fight. If there are twenty steadfast among you, they will overcome two hundred. And if there are one hundred of you, they will overcome one thousand of the disbelievers, for they are a people who do not comprehend.

O Prophet! Exhort the believers to fight. If there be of you twenty steadfast they shall overcome two hundred, and if there be of you a hundred (steadfast) they shall overcome a thousand of those who disbelieve, because they (the disbelievers) are a folk without intelligence.

O Prophet! Inspire the believers to conquer all fear of death when fighting, [so that,] if there be twenty of you who are patient in adversity, they might overcome two hundred; and [that,] if there be one hundred of you, they might overcome one thousand of those who are bent on denying the truth, because they are people who cannot grasp it.

'O Communicator of the hidden news! Urge the Muslims to wage holy war. If there will be twenty of you patient, they will overcome two hundred, and there be hundred of you, they will overcome a thousand infidels, because they do not understand.

O (Venerable) Messenger! Motivate the believers to fight (for the establishment of peace and human dignity). If there are twenty of you firm and steadfast (in the event of war), they will overpower two hundred (combating disbelievers), and if (one) hundred of you are (steadfast), they will overpower (one) thousand of the (invading) disbelievers because they do not understand

Now Allah has lightened your burden, for He knows that there is weakness in you. So if there are a hundred steadfast among you, they will overcome two hundred. And if there be one thousand, they will overcome two thousand, by Allah’s Will. And Allah is with the steadfast.

Now hath Allah lightened your burden, for He knoweth that there is weakness in you. So if there be of you a steadfast hundred they shall overcome two hundred, and if there be of you a thousand (steadfast) they shall overcome two thousand by permission of Allah. Allah is with the steadfast.

For the time being, [however,] God has lightened your burden. for He knows that you are weak: and so, if there be one hundred of you who are patient in adversity, they should [be able to]' overcome two hundred; and if there be one thousand of you, they should [be able to] overcome two thousand by God's leave: for God is with those who are patient in adversity.

Now Allah has lightened your burden, and He knows that you are weak. Then if there be a hundred of you patient, they shall overcome two hundred; and if there he a thousand of you, they shall overcome two thousand by the command of Allah. And Allah is with the patient.

Allah has, at present, lightened the burden (of His commandment) on you. He knows that there is (some degree of) weakness in you. So (now after mitigation the command is) that if there are (one) hundred resolute and steadfast (men) from amongst you, they will overpower two hundred (combating disbelievers). And if there are (one) thousand of you, they will triumph over two thousand (disbelievers) by the command of Allah, and Allah is with those who remain steadfast. (This is the target fixed for the believers which should be the minimum possible effect of the vehemence of their faith in the battlefield.

It is not fit for a prophet that he should take captives until he has thoroughly subdued the land. You ˹believers˺ settled with the fleeting gains of this world, while Allah’s aim ˹for you˺ is the Hereafter. Allah is Almighty, All-Wise.

It is not for any prophet to have captives until he hath made slaughter in the land. Ye desire the lure of this world and Allah desireth (for you) the Hereafter, and Allah is Mighty, Wise.

IT DOES NOT behove a prophet to keep captives unless he has battled strenuously on earth. You may desire the fleeting gains of this world-but God desires [for you the good of] the life to come: and God is almighty, wise.

It is not befitting to any Prophet that he should make captive to infidels, until he has immensely shed their blood in the land. You desire the goods of the world; and Allah desires the Here after. And Allah is Dominant, Wise.

It is not for a Prophet that he should have (disbelievers as) prisoners of war, until he has let much of the blood of these (mischief-monger terrorist militants) in the land. You (people) desire the riches of the world, and Allah intends (prosperity in) the Hereafter, and Allah is Almighty, Most Wise

Had it not been for a prior decree from Allah, you would have certainly been disciplined with a tremendous punishment for whatever ˹ransom˺ you have taken.

Had it not been for an ordinance of Allah which had gone before, an awful doom had come upon you on account of what ye took.

Had it not been for a decree from God that had already gone forth, there would indeed have befallen you a tremendous chastisement on account of all [the captives] that you took.

If Allah would not have written a thing before, then O Muslims! A great torment would have come to you for what you took as ransom from the infidels.

Had there not been a prior decree (i.e., command for forgiveness) from Allah, a terrible torment would indeed have seized you for (the ransom) that you procured (from the prisoners of Badr)

Now enjoy what you have taken, for it is lawful and good. And be mindful of Allah. Surely Allah is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

Now enjoy what ye have won, as lawful and good, and keep your duty to Allah. Lo! Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

Enjoy, then, all that is lawful and good among the things which you have gained in war, and remain conscious of God: verily, God is much-forgiving, a dispenser of grace.

Then eat of what you have obtained as spoil of war, lawful and pure, and remain fearing Allah. Verily Allah is ' Forgiving, Merciful.

So eat of the lawful and wholesome spoils of war you have obtained and keep fearing Allah. Surely, Allah is Most Forgiving, Ever-Merciful

O Prophet! Tell the captives in your custody, “If Allah finds goodness in your hearts, He will give you better than what has been taken from you, and forgive you. For Allah is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.”

O Prophet! Say unto those captives who are in your hands: If Allah knoweth any good in your hearts He will give you better than that which hath been taken from you, and will forgive you. Lo! Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

[Hence,] O Prophet, say unto the captives who are in your hands: "If God finds any good in your hearts, He will give you something better than all that has been taken from you, and will forgive you your sins: for God is much-forgiving, a dispenser of grace."

'O Communicator of the hidden news (Prophet) say to the prisoners in your hands, 'If Allah will find any good in your hearts, then He will give you better than what has been; taken from you and will forgive you' And Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

O Messenger! Say to the prisoners of war who are in your hands: ‘If Allah knows any good in your hearts, He will bestow on you better than that (wealth) which has been taken from you (as ransom), and He will forgive you.’ And Allah is Most Forgiving, Ever-Merciful

But if their intention is only to betray you ˹O Prophet˺, they sought to betray Allah before. But He gave you power over them. And Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.

And if they would betray thee, they betrayed Allah before, and He gave (thee) power over them. Allah is Knower, Wise.

And should they but seek to play false with thee -well, they were false to God [Himself] ere this: but He gave [the believers] mastery over them. And God is all-knowing, wise.

And 'O beloved Prophet! If they will intend to be treacherous to you, then they have already dealt treacherously with Allah before; therefore He gave so many under your control. And Allah is. Knowing, Wise.

And (O Beloved) if they want to betray you, they have certainly betrayed Allah before this (as well). And (for the same reason) He has placed some of them under (your) authority. And Allah is All-Knowing, Most Wise

Those who believed, emigrated, and strived with their wealth and lives in the cause of Allah, as well as those who gave them shelter and help—they are truly guardians of one another. As for those who believed but did not emigrate, you have no obligations to them until they emigrate. But if they seek your help ˹against persecution˺ in faith, it is your obligation to help them, except against people bound with you in a treaty. Allah is All-Seeing of what you do.

Lo! those who believed and left their homes and strove with their wealth and their lives for the cause of Allah, and those who took them in and helped them: these are protecting friends one of another. And those who believed but did not leave their homes, ye have no duty to protect them till they leave their homes; but if they seek help from you in the matter of religion then it is your duty to help (them) except against a folk between whom and you there is a treaty. Allah is Seer of what ye do.

BEHOLD, as for those who have attained to faith, and who have forsaken the domain of evil and are striving hard, with their possessions and their lives, in God's cause, as well as those who shelter and succour [them] - these are [truly] the friends and protectors of one another. But as for those who have come to believe without having migrated [to your country] - you are in no wise responsible for their protection until such a time as they migrate [to you]. Yet, if they ask you for succour against religious persecution, it is your duty to give [them] this succour-except against a people between whom and yourselves there is a covenant: for God sees all that you do.

Undoubtedly, those who believed and left their hearth and homes for Allah and fought with their wealth and their lives in the way of Allah, and those who gave shelter and helped they are heirs one of another. And those who believed and did not emigrate, you have no duty to their inheritance unless they emigrate, if they seek help from you in the matter of the religion, then it is obligatory upon you to help them, but against a people between whom and you there is an agreement. And Allah is seeing your doing.

Indeed, those who have embraced faith and have emigrated (for the cause of Allah) and have fought in the way of Allah with their material as well as human resources, and those who have provided (the Emigrants) with shelter and helped (them), it is they who are the real friends of one another. And those who have believed (but) have not emigrated (for Allah), you do not owe anything to them for their friendship till they emigrate. And if they seek help from you in (matters of) Din (Religion), it will be your duty to help them, except against a people with whom you have a (peace) treaty. And Allah is Most Vigilant to all (the works) that you are doing

73

As for the disbelievers, they are guardians of one another. And unless you ˹believers˺ act likewise, there will be great oppression and corruption in the land.

And those who disbelieve are protectors one of another - If ye do not so, there will be confusion in the land, and great corruption.

With all this, [remember that] those who are bent on denying the truth are allies of one another; and unless you act likewise [among yourselves], oppression will reign on earth, and great corruption.

And the infidels are heirs one of another. If you will not do such, then there shall be in the land mischief and great disorder.

And those who disbelieve are the allies of one another. (O Muslims!) If you do not extend (to one another) the same (help and cooperation for the cause of Allah), then great mischief and disruption (for the dominance of disbelief and falsehood) will break out in the land

74

Those who believed, migrated, and struggled in the cause of Allah, and those who gave ˹them˺ shelter and help, they are the true believers. They will have forgiveness and an honourable provision.

Those who believed and left their homes and strove for the cause of Allah, and those who took them in and helped them - these are the believers in truth. For them is pardon, and bountiful provision.

And they who have attained to faith, and who have forsaken the domain of evil and are striving hard in God's cause, as well as those who shelter and succour [them]-it is they, they who are truly believers! Forgiveness of sins awaits them, and a most excellent sustenance.

And those who believed and emigrated and fought in the way of Allah and those who gave shelter and helped they are true believers. For them is forgiveness and honourable provision.

And those who believed and emigrated and fought in the cause of Allah and those who provided shelter (to those who sacrificed their households and homeland in the cause of Allah) and helped (them), they are the people who are in fact true Muslims. They are the ones for whom is forgiveness and an honourable provision

75

And those who later believed, migrated, and struggled alongside you, they are also with you. But only blood relatives are now entitled to inherit from one another, as ordained by Allah. Surely Allah has ˹full˺ knowledge of everything.

And those who afterwards believed and left their homes and strove along with you, they are of you; and those who are akin are nearer one to another in the ordinance of Allah. Lo! Allah is Knower of all things.

And as for those who henceforth come to believe, and who forsake the domain of evil and strive hard [in God's cause] together with you - these [too] shall belong to you; and they who are [thus] closely related have the highest claim on one another in [accordance with] God's decree. Verily, God has full knowledge of everything.

And those who believed afterwards and emigrated and waged the holy war with you, they also are of you. And the blood relations are nearer to one another in the Book of Allah. Undoubtedly Allah knows all things.

And those who believed afterwards, and left their homes (sacrificing) in the cause of truth, and joined you in fighting (in defence against the aggressing enemies who initiated and imposed war to jolt off the newly born system of social justice, peace and security), they are (also) from amongst you. And (as for inheritance and affinity with blood relations) the relatives have a higher claim on one another in the Book of Allah. Surely, Allah knows best everything
