The Emigration to Madinah
1 His statement: Chapter: It is said: The meaning is this chapter explains the migration of his companions from Makkah and his departure from this world. In one copy: Chapter on What Relates to His Departure from the Preliminaries. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
Al-Bara’ (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The first of the Messenger of Allah’s (ﷺ) companions to arrive to us were Mus‘ab ibn Umayr and Ibn Umm Maktum. They began teaching us the Qur’an. Then Ammar, Bilal, and Sa’d came. Then Umar ibn al-Khattab came with twenty of the Prophet’s (ﷺ) companions. Then the Prophet (ﷺ) came 1. I have never seen the people of Madinah so joyful as they were with him, until I saw the women and children saying, “This is the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) who has come.” He did not come until 2 I recited Glorify the name of your Lord, the Most High in a surah like it from al-Mufassal. [Narrated by Bukhari]
Notes /
1 His statement “Then the Prophet (ﷺ) came”: meaning with the more truthful, Abu Bakr. His statement “in surahs”: meaning in a group of surahs or with surahs. His statement “like it”: meaning like Surah at-Tin in length. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
2 His statement “until I recited Glorify the name of your Lord, the Most High”: meaning I learned it. It mentions the cause, recitation, intending the effect, learning. This indicates that Glorify the name of your Lord, the Most High was revealed in Makkah. It raises an issue that Allah’s words He has succeeded who purifies himself and mentions the name of his Lord and prays [Al-A‘la: 14-15] were revealed about the zakah of Fitr, the obligation of Fitr charity, and the Eid prayer in the second year. It is possible the surah is Makkan except for these two verses, and the soundest is that it is all Makkan. The Prophet (ﷺ) then explained that the words He has succeeded who purifies himself and mentions the name of his Lord and prays refer to Fitr zakah and Eid prayer. The verse encourages zakah and prayer without specifying, and the Sunnah clarified it later. Allah knows best. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) arrived in Madinah, the Abyssinians played with their spears 1 in joy at his coming. [Narrated by Abu Dawud] In Ad-Darimi’s narration: He said: I have never seen a day as beautiful or brighter than the day the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) entered upon us, nor a day as uglier or darker than the day the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) passed away. In At-Tirmidhi’s narration: He said: When it was the day the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) entered Madinah, everything in it lit up. When it was the day he passed away, everything in it darkened. We had not shaken the dust from our hands while burying him until 2 our hearts rejected it.
Notes /
1 His statement “with their spears”: with a kasrah on the ha, plural of harbah, a short spear. His statement “In At-Tirmidhi’s narration: He said”: meaning Anas. His statement “everything”: in the nominative, as “it lit up” requires it. It can be transitive. “From” clarifies what preceded. At-Tibi said: The pronoun refers to Madinah. This indicates the lighting was perceptible. His statement “everything in it darkened”: specifying Madinah as it is closer and more appropriate for the narrator’s sight. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
2 His statement “until our hearts rejected it”: in the accusative as the object of “rejected.” It does not mean denying faith, but a metaphor for losing the radiance and clarity from seeing him, the difference between presence and absence. (As stated in Al-Lama’at) In Al-Mirqat, quoting Al-Turbishti: It means they did not find their hearts as they were in purity and familiarity due to the revelation’s cessation and loss of the Prophet’s (ﷺ) support and teaching. It does not mean they did not find them believing.
Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) sat 1 on the pulpit and said: “A servant was given the choice by Allah between the flower of this world and what is with Him, and he chose what is with Him.” Abu Bakr wept and said, “We ransom you with our fathers and mothers.” We were amazed at him, and the people said, “Look at this elder informing the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) about a servant Allah chose between the flower of this world and what is with Him, and he says, ‘We ransom you with our fathers and mothers.’” The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was the chosen one, and Abu Bakr was the most knowledgeable of us. [Agreed Upon]
Notes /
1 His statement “sat on the pulpit”: meaning during the illness in which he passed away. His statement “whatever he wished”: the postponed object of its specifier, meaning the length of life, remaining in the world, and enjoying it as he wished. His statement “Abu Bakr wept”: due to his perfect understanding, knowing their parting from the world. His statement “we were amazed at him”: meaning at Abu Bakr, ransoming him without a cause requiring it, only due to not understanding the indication from the apparent wording. His statement “about a servant”: meaning an unspecified unknown. His statement “the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was the chosen one”: in the accusative, the subject of the sentence, meaning it became clear to us later that he was the chosen servant. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came out to us during the illness in which he passed away, while we were in the mosque, his head wrapped in a cloth, until he descended 1 toward the pulpit, sat on it, and we followed him. He said: “By the One in Whose Hand is my soul, I see the Pool from my place here.” Then he said: “A servant was shown this world and its adornment, and he chose the Hereafter.” No one understood it but Abu Bakr, whose eyes flowed, and he wept. Then he said, “Rather, we ransom you with our fathers and mothers and our souls and wealth, O Messenger of Allah.” He said: Then he descended, and he did not stand upon it until the Hour. [Narrated by Ad-Darimi]
Notes /
1 His statement “descended”: meaning he intended to descend. His statement “his eyes flowed”: meaning Abu Bakr’s tears fell, and he wept. Then he said: “Rather, we ransom you with our fathers and mothers and our souls and wealth,” meaning our slaves and maidservants and the like, if ransoming with them or all of them were permissible. His statement “until the Hour”: meaning until now. At-Tibi said: “Until” is a particle of accompaniment, meaning the Hereafter, i.e., he did not stand upon it after that in his life. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated: I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: “No prophet falls ill without being given a choice between this world and the Hereafter.” During the illness 1 in which he passed away, he was overcome by a severe hoarseness, and I heard him say: “With those upon whom Allah has bestowed His favor, of the prophets, the truthful, the martyrs, and the righteous” [An-Nisa: 69]. So I knew he had been given the choice. [Agreed Upon]
Notes /
1 His statement “during the illness”: meaning during his sickness. His statement “hoarseness”: with a dammah on the ba and tashdid on the ha. Ibn Hajar said: It is something that sinks into the throat, altering the voice and making it coarse. It is also said to mean a cough here. His statement “with those upon whom Allah has bestowed His favor”: meaning with the Sublime Companion. The plural form, as mentioned, is preferable. May Allah gather us with them in the Hereafter. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to say while healthy: “No prophet is taken until he sees his place in Paradise, then he is given the choice.” When 1 the signs of departure approached him and his head was on my thigh, he fainted, then regained consciousness and fixed his gaze on the ceiling of the room. Then he said: “O Allah, the Sublime Companion.” I said: “Then he does not choose us.” She said: I knew it was the Hadith he used to tell us while healthy, saying: “No prophet is ever taken until he sees his place in Paradise, then he is given the choice.” Aishah said: His last words 2 were: “O Allah, the Sublime Companion.” [Agreed Upon]
Notes /
1 His statement “the signs of departure approached”: meaning its signs. “His head was on my thigh” is a circumstantial clause. The response to “when” is her statement: “he fainted,” meaning he lost consciousness. His statement “while healthy”: At-Tibi said: This refers to the Hadith he mentioned while healthy.
2 His statement “his last words”: in the accusative. In one copy, it is in the nominative: “O Allah, the Sublime Companion.” As-Suhayli said: The first words the Prophet (ﷺ) spoke were “Allah is Greater” while he was being nursed at Halimah’s. Ibn Hajar mentioned this, and it is narrated that he was the first to say “Yes” when “Am I not your Lord?” [Al-A‘raf: 172] was asked. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
Uqbah ibn Amir narrated: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) prayed over the martyrs of Uhud after 1 eight years, as if bidding farewell to the living and the dead. Then he ascended the pulpit and said: “I am your predecessor before you, and I am a witness over you. Your appointed place is the Pool, and I see it from my place here. I have been given the keys to the treasures of the earth, or the keys of the earth. I do not fear that you will associate partners with Allah, but I fear for you the world, that you will compete for it.” Some added: “And you will kill one another and be destroyed as those before you were destroyed.” [Agreed Upon]
Ali al-Qari said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) prayed the funeral prayer over them, which is the apparent and immediate meaning, specific to him or them. Ash-Shafi‘i said: The prayer meant supplication.
Notes /
1 His statement “after eight years”: meaning from their burial. His statement “as if bidding farewell to the living and the dead”: to the living by leaving them, and to the dead by ceasing his supplication and seeking forgiveness for them. As-Suyuti said: This was near his passing. His statement “predecessor”: with fathah on fa and ra, the one who precedes the arrivals, preparing drinks and buckets for them and watering. It means he is their intercessor, as he precedes them, and the intercessor precedes the interceded for. His statement “a witness over you”: meaning aware of your states, as your deeds are shown, or I am a witness and praiser for you. His statement “your appointed place”: meaning the place promised for your exclusive intercession on the Day of Gathering, the Pool. His statement “I see it”: meaning now, the Pool, from my place above the pulpit, which is apparent. It seems it was revealed to him in that state. His statement “I have been given the keys to the treasures of the earth”: meaning the earth’s treasures will be opened for my nation by conquering its lands. His statement “you will compete”: with the omission of one ta, meaning you will desire it. An-Nawawi said: It includes the Prophet’s (ﷺ) miracles: informing that his nation will possess the earth’s treasures, which happened; they will not apostatize, and Allah protected them from that; and they will compete for the world, which happened. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated: When “When the victory of Allah has come and the conquest” [An-Nasr: 1] was revealed, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) called Fatimah and said: “My soul has been taken from me.” She wept, and he said: “Do not weep, for you 2 are the first of my family to join me.” She smiled. Some of the Prophet’s (ﷺ) wives saw her and said: “O Fatimah, we saw you weep, then smile?” She said: “He informed me that his soul had been taken from him, so I wept. Then he said to me: ‘Do not weep, for you are the first of my family to join me,’ so I smiled.” The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “When the victory of Allah has come and the conquest, and the people of Yemen came, they are softer of hearts. Faith is Yemeni, and wisdom 3 is Yemeni.” [Narrated by Ad-Darimi]
Notes /
1 His statement “when ‘When the victory of Allah has come and the conquest’ was revealed”: meaning to the end of the surah, indicating the completion heralding disappearance. It is as if he said: When your victory is complete, busy yourself with serving Him by glorifying your Lord and thanking His favors, as your mission’s purpose is fulfilled. His statement “my soul has been taken from me”: in the passive feminine, meaning I was informed of my passing. At-Tibi said: “Taken” implies finality, “to me” meaning ending with the announcement of my soul’s taking, as you say: Ahmad to you so-and-so. His statement “some of the Prophet’s (ﷺ) wives”: meaning Aishah, and the plural honors her status. At-Tibi mentioned this, but it is possible others shared what they saw with her, which is apparent from “some of the Prophet’s (ﷺ) wives” and “O Fatimah, we saw you weep, then smile.” Perhaps they were in a place behind her, or the Prophet (ﷺ) confided with her alone, as explicitly in another narration where she withheld the answer then, informing after his passing. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
2 His statement “for you are the first of my family”: Al-Akmal said: The soundest is that she lived six months after him. It is said: eight months, three months, or seventy days. His statement “the people of Yemen came”: conjoined with “When the victory of Allah has come” [An-Nasr: 1], explaining Allah’s words “and you see the people entering the religion of Allah in multitudes” [An-Nasr: 2], indicating the people meant are the people of Yemen. His statement “faith is Yemeni”: meaning right-handed, the alif substituting for the ya of attribution. It is said he said this because faith began in Makkah, which is Tihamah, part of Yemen’s land, hence the Ka‘bah is called Yemeni. It is said: He said this in Tabuk, with Makkah and Madinah between him and Yemen, so he pointed toward Yemen. Abu Umar al-Shaykh said: Rather, it means the people of Yemen, as apparent, attributing faith to them indicates its perfection among them, as attributing something to one described by it, with its strength in him, does not deny it in others. Thus, no contradiction with “faith is in the people of Hijaz.” The meaning is the monotheists of that time, not all Yemenis in all times. (As stated in Al-Mirqat) In Al-Lama’at: It is clear that he said “the people of Yemen came,” etc., during his final illness, unless it is another Hadith mixed in due to mentioning passing and Surah When the victory of Allah has come and the conquest [An-Nasr: 1], and Allah knows best.
3 His statement “wisdom”: meaning perfecting knowledge and action. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said in the illness in which he passed away: “O Aishah, I still feel the pain of the food I ate at Khaybar, and this is the time 1 I feel my aorta severed from that poison.” [Narrated by Bukhari]
Notes /
1 His statement “this is the time I feel”: At-Tibi said: “Time” can have dammah or fathah; dammah as predicate of the subject, fathah due to attribution to the constructed. This is the preferred, as in the day I was born and the night I was taken on the Journey. The meaning: This is the moment I feel. His statement “my aorta”: with fathah on hamzah and ha between two waws, a vein connected to the heart; if severed, its owner passes away. It is said: The aorta originates from the head and extends to the foot, with arteries connecting to most limbs and body. The one in the head is called “the nape,” extending to the throat as the jugular, to the chest as the aorta, and to the leg as the thigh. The hamzah in “aorta” is added. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated: When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was attended 1 and Umar ibn al-Khattab was among the men in the room, the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Come 2, I will write a document for you so you will not go astray after it.” Umar said: “The Prophet (ﷺ) is overcome by pain, and you have the Qur’an; the Book of Allah suffices you 3.” The people of the house differed and disputed. Some said: “Bring it so the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) can write for you.” Others said what Umar said. When they increased in noise and difference, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Leave me.” Ubayd Allah said: Ibn Abbas used to say: “The calamity 4, the entire calamity, what prevented the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) from writing that document for them due to their difference and noise.”
In Sulayman ibn Abi Muslim al-Ahwal’s narration, Ibn Abbas said: “Thursday day, what is Thursday day?” Then he wept until his tears wet the pebbles. I said: “O Ibn Abbas, what is Thursday day?” He said: “The Messenger of Allah’s (ﷺ) pain intensified, and he said: ‘Bring me 5 a shoulder blade so I can write 6 a document for you so you will not go astray after it forever.’ They disputed, and disputing is not appropriate near a prophet. They said: ‘What is wrong with him? Is he delirious? 7’ They went to question him. He said: ‘Leave me; what I am in is better than what you call me to.’ He commanded them three things and said: ‘Expel the polytheists from the Arabian Peninsula, and allow delegations as I used to allow them.’ He was silent about the third or said it and I forgot it.” Sufyan said: This is from Sulayman. [Agreed Upon]
Imam Ahmad narrated from Aishah: When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was severely ill, he said to Abd ar-Rahman ibn Abi Bakr: “Bring me a shoulder blade or tablet so I can write a document for Abu Bakr so there will be no dispute about him.”
When Abd ar-Rahman went to comply, he said: “Allah and the believers refuse that you dispute over Abu Bakr.”
Bukhari narrated: I intended or wanted to send for Abu Bakr and his son and bequeath 8 that the sayers or wisher say: “I am more deserving,” but I said: “Allah refuses, and the believers refuse, or Allah refuses, and the believers refuse.”
Muslim narrated in wording: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said to me in his illness: “Call Abu Bakr, your father, and your brother, so I can write a document, for I fear the wisher may wish or the sayer may say: ‘I am more deserving,’ and Allah and the believers refuse anyone but Abu Bakr.”
The general answer: This matter did not come from Umar alone, but the people in the room divided into two groups, and Abbas and Ali (may Allah be pleased with them) were present. If they were among those preventing, they share Umar’s attacks. If they were among those permitting, some attacks apply to them, like raising the voice, especially in severe illness, and wasting the nation’s rights that led to misguidance due to the preventers’ refusal, so it was incumbent on them to bring the inkwell and paper at that time or later, as this incident was on Thursday, and the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) lived until Monday. Since the attacks apply to Umar and others, the objection falls. The first attack’s first aspect applies to Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) too, as the address was plural, “Come to me.” If this was obligatory, the present ones became sinful. If it was guidance and recommendation, not obligatory, then neither Umar nor others are attacked or blamed, as differing with the Prophet’s (ﷺ) guidance and advice is permissible by consensus.
The detailed answer: As for the first attack, all its claims are flawed. The minor premise is false because Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) did not reject his words but intended to relieve the Prophet (ﷺ) and ease his fatigue and exhaustion in that state. When Umar saw that writing with his noble hand or dictating was burdensome, and it is not permissible to impose obligation on him, he addressed the Prophet (ﷺ) respectfully and the present ones that the Qur’an suffices from obligation, as three months earlier, the great verse “This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion” [Al-Ma’idah: 3] was revealed, preventing abrogation, change, addition, or subtraction in religion, sealing it completely. Umar pointed to this verse with “the Book of Allah suffices you.” If the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) wrote a new matter not in Allah’s Book at that time, it would contradict the verse. This is impossible. It is clear that his intent was confirming previous rulings in the Qur’an, not something new. Umar did not say to him: “The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) is overcome by pain, and you have the Qur’an; the Book of Allah suffices you,” as a clear witness, making rejecting the response false.
Many transactions and conversations occurred among the Prophet’s (ﷺ) companions, like ransoming Badr’s captives, not praying over the hypocrite Abdullah ibn Abi, the pure wives’ veiling, making Ibrahim’s station a prayer place, and the Prophet (ﷺ) intending to reconcile the Confederates for a third of Madinah’s dates to return, but Abu Sa‘d ibn Ubadah opposed, so he returned to it. He told Abu Hurairah: “Go and call among the people: Whoever says there is no god but Allah sincerely enters Paradise,” but Umar pushed him in his chest until he fell, saying: “Do not call that, for if you say it, they will rely on it and leave deeds.” Abu Hurairah informed the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), who said: “Do not say it, and let them act,” returning to Umar’s opinion. If this was rejecting revelation, why did the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and Musa (peace be upon them) do it, and as Musa consulted, Allah says “And [mention] when your Lord called Moses, [saying], ‘What is wrong, [that] you are not communicating with the people? Do you say, “I am afraid they will deny me”? [Moses] said, ‘My Lord, I fear they will deny me and that my breast will be constricted, and my tongue will not loosen. So send to Aaron. And they have a charge against me, so I fear they will kill me’” [Ash-Shu‘ara: 10-14].
The Allamah al-Ayni, quoting al-Maziri: There is no disagreement that commands may be accompanied by indicators turning them from obligation to recommendation, and vice versa for those saying they are for permission and obligation and other meanings. Perhaps indicators showed it was not obligatory but left to their choice, or he believed it came from him without firm intent. As for the second aspect, attributing delirium and confusion to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), it falls, as narrations have “Is he delirious?” with interrogative hamzah of denial, indicated by “question him,” not “leave him.” If the companions intended to affirm delirium and attribute it to him, they would not say “question him,” but “leave him.” As for the third aspect, it is false too, as raising the voice above the Prophet’s (ﷺ) voice is forbidden, but raising the voice among them in debate was their habit. Allah says “Do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet” [Al-Hujurat: 2], not “do not raise your voices among yourselves near the Prophet.” Then Allah says “like the loudness of some of you to others” [Al-Hujurat: 2], showing loudness between some and others is permissible. How do they know Umar raised his voice first? It is established that the throne shook, and many men were in the room. In transactions, raising the voice is common, witnessed by the Prophet’s (ﷺ) words “disputing is not appropriate near a prophet,” indicating dispute among them. “Leave me” addresses the present, general to preventers or permitters. After this speech, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) lived five days, and Umar was not present every time, so why did he not dictate in Umar’s absence during those five days? This is a great slander.
The rational answer to this attack: If the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was commanded by Allah to write this, he would not leave it for the five days remaining from Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Then he would have it witnessed, but he bequeathed three things: expelling polytheists from the Arabian Peninsula, allowing delegations, and the third was forgotten by the narrator or preparing Usamah’s army. If he intended writing the caliphate for Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), he did not need dictation, as he spoke of Ali’s guardianship at Ghadir Khum, saying: “He is the guardian of every believer, male and female.” If people did not act on this speech, how would they act on these lines? The intent was not wasting the nation’s right at all. End of the verifier Karam Allah al-Dahlawi’s words.
Notes /
1 His statement “when the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was attended”: in the passive, meaning the signs of departure attended him. It has a concession, as he lived after that Thursday until Monday. It is said: The implied meaning is when the signs of departure attended him. His statement “men were in the room”: meaning many, including Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him). Two circumstantial clauses between “when” and its response, which is “the Prophet (ﷺ) said.” His statement “I will write a document for you”: in the jussive as the response. His statement “so you will not go astray after it”: attributing to “document.” (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
2 His statement “Come, I will write a document for you, etc.”: Our master, the noble Mawlana Muhammad Karam Allah al-Dahlawi (may Allah have mercy on him the Mighty), in Sirat al-Muhammadiyyah: The Shi‘ah claim several attacks on Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) in this story. First: He rejected the Messenger of Allah’s (ﷺ) words, and the words of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) are revelation, as Allah says “Nor does he speak from [his own] inclination. It is not but a revelation revealed” [An-Najm: 3-4]. Rejecting revelation is disbelief. Allah says “And whoever does not judge by what Allah has revealed, then it is those who are the disbelievers” [Al-Ma’idah: 44]. Second: He attributed delirium and confusion to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), but prophets are protected from that, or reliance on their words and actions would be lost. Third: Raising the voice near the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), and raising the voice is forbidden near the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). Allah says “O you who have believed, do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet or be loud to him in speech like the loudness of some of you to others, lest your deeds become worthless while you perceive not” [Al-Hujurat: 2]. Fourth: He wasted the nation’s right, as if the document was written, the nation would not go astray, but it did and differed in fundamentals and branches.
3 His statement “the Book of Allah suffices you”: This is Umar’s (may Allah be pleased with him) words, among evidences of his jurisprudence, virtues, and sharp insight, as he feared he would write matters they could not bear, deserving punishment as they are specified, leaving no room for ijtihad. He pointed to Allah’s words “We have not neglected in the Book anything” [Al-An‘am: 38] and “This day I have perfected for you your religion” [Al-Ma’idah: 3]. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
4 His statement “the calamity, the entire calamity”: meaning the complete affliction, what prevented: the state that intervened and became a barrier. His statement “until his tears wet the pebbles”: meaning his tears fell without count, reaching the ground’s pebbles. His weeping was either renewed grief at his passing and loss, or regret at missing the good he believed would come if the document was written. The latter is more apparent here. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
5 His statement “bring me a shoulder blade”: Al-Qurtubi said: “Bring me” is a command, and the commanded should hasten to comply, but Umar and a group saw it was not obligatory and was guidance to the better, so they disliked burdening him in that state, recalling Allah’s words “We have not neglected in the Book anything” [Al-An‘am: 38] and “He details all things” [An-Nahl: 89]. Umar said: “The Book of Allah suffices you,” pointing to these verses. Another group saw the better in writing for complying with his command and additional clarification, and his command to get up shows the first command was optional. He lived days after and did not repeat it, so if obligatory, he would not leave it for their difference, as he did not leave commanding the opponent. Allah knows best. (As stated in Umdat al-Qari)
6 His statement “I will write a document for you”: in the jussive in all present verified copies, so the jussive in “you will not go astray after it forever” raises an issue. Its form could be a response to an implied condition, “If I write a document for you and you act by it, you will not go astray,” meaning you will not become misguided. In one copy: “so that you will not go astray.” This is clear, meaning so you do not go astray, or lightened “that you will not go astray.” His statement “disputing is not appropriate near a prophet”: It is said to be part of the raised Hadith, supported by “disputing is not appropriate with me” in a narration. It could be inserted from Ibn Abbas’s words, but the apparent is the immediate. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
7 His statement “Is he delirious?”: with fathahs, meaning his speech differed due to illness, as a rhetorical question of denial, not a statement, making it rude and delirious. The speaker is Umar, not attributed to him. It is indicated by “question him”; otherwise, “leave him.” His statement “what I am in”: meaning awareness of Allah, preparation for meeting Him, reflection thereon, and the like, is better than what you call me to, meaning better than what you are in of difference and noise. His statement “allow delegations”: honor those who come to you from around you, and give them gifts from what you have. His statement “was silent”: An-Nawawi said: The silent one is Ibn Abbas, and the forgetful is Sa‘id ibn Jubayr. Al-Muhallab said the third is preparing Usamah’s army. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
8 His statement “and bequeath”: meaning I will bequeath Abu Bakr the caliphate after me and make him my successor, so the sayers or wisher say: “I am more deserving,” but “or” indicates connection, not doubt. His statement “then I said”: meaning in thought. In the apparent, “Allah refuses,” meaning except his caliphate, and the believers refuse, meaning other than Abu Bakr’s caliphate, or Allah refuses, doubt from the narrator, and the believers refuse appointing him as minor imam, as some senior companions understood when disputing: “Our religion chose him; shall we not choose him for our worldly matters?” This is clear proof of explanation to every guardian. Then in “Allah and the believers refuse,” it indicates disbelieving whoever denies Abu Bakr’s true caliphate, unless meaning most believers, affirming the majority Muslims’ opposition. Ibn al-Malik said: I left the bequest relying on Allah refusing anyone else as caliph and the believers refusing others. It includes virtue for Abu Bakr and informing what will happen, which occurred as he said. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated: I said, “Oh, my head!” The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “If that were to happen while I am alive, I would seek forgiveness for you and pray for you.” Aishah said: “Oh, my loss! By Allah, I think you want me to die. If that happened, you would spend the rest of your day consummating with one of your wives!” The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Rather, it is I who says, ‘Oh, my head!’ I intended or wanted to send for Abu Bakr and his son to make a bequest, lest some sayers say or wishers wish otherwise. But then I said: Allah refuses, and the believers refuse, or Allah refuses, and the believers push back.” [Narrated by Bukhari]
Notes /
1 Her statement “Oh, my head!”: due to a severe headache, she lamented her head, alluding to the signs of departure. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
2 Her statement “Oh, my loss!”: with fathah or dammah on the ta, meaning the signs of departure, destruction, or loss of a loved one or child. The literal meaning is not intended; rather, it is an expression used in moments of distress or calamity. (As stated in Al-Lama’at)
3 Her statement “consummating”: with dammah on the mim, then sukoon, then kasrah. In some copies, it is “consummated” with tashdid on the ra. His statement “Rather, it is I who says, ‘Oh, my head!’”: “Rather” is for rebuttal, meaning set aside your headache and focus on me, for my matter is more significant than yours. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated: One day, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) returned to me from 1 a funeral at Al-Baqi and found me suffering from a headache, saying, “Oh, my head!” He said: “Rather, it is I, O Aishah, who says, ‘Oh, my head!’ What harm would it be if you departed from this world before me, and I washed you, shrouded you, prayed over you, and buried you?” I said: “By Allah, it is as if I see you doing that, then returning to my house and consummating with one of your wives!” The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) smiled, then his pain began, in which he returned to his Lord. [Narrated by Ad-Darimi] The author of Ad-Durr al-Mukhtar said: It is forbidden for her husband to wash or touch her, though not to look at her, according to the soundest opinion (Munya). The three Imams said: It is permissible, as Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) washed Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her). We say: 2 This is understood as the marriage bond persisting, due to his statement: “Every cause and lineage is severed by death except my cause and lineage.” Based on this, he said in this Hadith: “I washed you.”
Notes /
1 His statement “from a funeral”: meaning for the sake of a funeral, a circumstantial clause related to “returned” from Al-Baqi. His statement “and buried you”: implies that her departure during his lifetime is better than her living after his departure. Her statement “it is as if I see you”: by Allah, it is as if I envision you. At-Tibi said: The lam is a response to an omitted oath, and the mentioned phrase is parenthetical between the circumstantial clause and its subject. The meaning is: By Allah, it is as if I see you, in such and such a state. Her statement “and consummating with one of your wives”: with tashdid on the ra. In As-Sahih: A man consummates with his family when he is intimate with her; do not say “married,” as the common people say. This Hadith is evidence against linguists, unless “consummating” here means stopping to rest at the end of the night, or generally, as a metaphor for intimacy, or as a figurative expression. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
2 Our statement: In the explanation of Al-Majma, its author said: When Fatimah was washed, Umm Ayman, her nursemaid, washed her, and he was pleased with her. The narration of Ali washing her is understood as arranging and fully overseeing its causes. Even if the narration is established, it is specific to him. Do you not see that when Ibn Masud was questioned about it, he responded: “Do you not know that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: Fatimah is your wife in this world and the Hereafter”? His claim of specificity proves that their position is that it is not permissible. I say: The Hadith mentioned by the commentator also indicates specificity. Some explained “cause” as Islam and piety, and “lineage” as kinship, including through marriage or fosterage. It seems to me preferable that “cause” refers to relational ties like marriage or affinity, and “lineage” to blood kinship, as the cause of Islam and piety is not severed for anyone. Thus, specificity remains in his cause and lineage. For this reason, Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) married Umm Kulthum, Ali’s daughter. As for Allah’s statement “So there will be no lineages between them” [Al-Mu’minun: 101], it is specific to lineages not benefiting in this world and the Hereafter. As for the Hadith “I will not avail you against Allah,” it means he does not possess that except as Allah grants. He benefits them through intercession by Allah’s permission, as do relatives. The full discussion is in our treatise Al-Ilm az-Zahir fi Nafi‘ an-Nasab at-Tahir. (As stated in Radd al-Muhtar)

Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated: One of Allah’s blessings upon me is that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) returned to his Lord 1 in my house, on my day, and between 2 my chest and my throat. And 3 Allah joined my saliva with his at his departure. Abd ar-Rahman (may Allah be pleased with him) entered with a siwak in his hand while I was supporting the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). I saw him looking at it, and I knew he loved the siwak. I said: “Shall I take it for you?” He nodded yes. I took it and softened it, but it was too hard for him. I said: “Shall I soften it for you?” He nodded yes. I softened it, and he passed it over his teeth. There was 4 a jug of water before him, and he kept dipping his hands in the water and wiping his face, saying: “There is no god but Allah; indeed, the signs of departure have their agonies.” Then he raised his hand and kept saying: “With the Sublime Companion,” until he was called to his Lord, and his hand fell. [Narrated by Bukhari]
Notes /
1 Her statement “passed away in my house, on my day”: meaning on my turn, so I could be honored by serving him. In Jami‘ al-Usul: The Prophet’s illness began with a headache in Aishah’s house, then worsened in Maymunah’s house. He sought permission from his wives to be nursed in Aishah’s house, and they permitted it. His illness lasted twelve days, and he passed away on Monday morning in Rabi‘ al-Awwal. It is said: two nights into it; others say: twelve nights into it, which is more common. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
2 Her statement “between my chest and my throat”: with fathah then sukoon on both, indicating utmost closeness. The meaning is that he passed away leaning on her chest, near her throat, as the chest refers to the lungs. This does not contradict what Al-Hakim and Ibn Sa‘d narrated through various chains that his noble head was in Ali’s lap (may Allah honor his face), as each narration has some issue. Ibn Hajar said: If authentic, it can be reconciled that he was in his lap before passing. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
3 Her statement “And Allah joined my saliva with his at his departure”: Since joining their saliva requires explanation, she clarified with a parenthetical: “Abd ar-Rahman entered,” etc. Her statement “siwak”: meaning unused, as will be mentioned. Her statement “I knew”: meaning, in the past, I knew from his habit. Her statement “he passed it over his teeth”: with tashdid on the ra, from “passing over.” The meaning: Our saliva mixed in my throat and his at his departure. This indicates his satisfaction with her even at the end of his life. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
4 Her statement “There was a jug of water before him”: It is inferred that this should be done for every sick person. If they cannot do it, it should be done for them, as it eases distress, like administering water. Administering water is obligatory if the patient’s need is severe. Her statement “the signs of departure have their agonies”: with fathahs, plural of agony, meaning severe hardships and pains, even for prophets and those of perfection, due to natural heat and bitterness. So, prepare for those states and seek from Allah their easing for those who have departed. In those agonies, there is an increase in elevated ranks. Her statement “Then he raised his hand”: meaning in supplication or gesturing toward the heavens. “He kept saying ‘With the Sublime Companion’”: related to an omitted phrase, meaning “Place me with the Sublime Companion,” referring to the prophets dwelling in the highest heavens. Her statement “he was called to his Lord, and his hand fell”: to his right or left, or both, indicating closure from the two worlds and inclination toward the Creator, whose meeting is the delight of the eyes, hence he was the master of the two creations. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

Ja‘far ibn Muhammad narrated from his father: A man from Quraysh visited his father, Ali ibn al-Husayn, and said: “Shall I narrate to you about the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)?” He said: “Yes, tell us about Abu al-Qasim (ﷺ).” He said: When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) fell ill, Jibril came to him and said: “O Muhammad, Allah has sent me to you as an honor and distinction for you, specifically for you, asking you about what He knows better than you: ‘How do you find yourself?’” He replied: “I find myself, O Jibril, distressed and afflicted.” The next day, Jibril came again and said the same, and the Prophet (ﷺ) responded as he did the first day. On the third day, Jibril came and said the same, and he responded as before. Jibril came with an angel named Isma‘il, accompanied by a hundred thousand angels, each leading a hundred thousand angels. He sought permission to approach, and 1 the Prophet asked about him. Jibril said: “This is the Angel of Death, seeking permission to approach you. He has never sought permission from a human before you, nor will he after you.” He said: “Grant him permission.” Permission was granted, and he greeted him, then said: “O Muhammad, Allah has sent me to you. If you command me to take your soul, I will take it; if you command me to leave it, I will leave it.” The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Will you do that, O Angel of Death?” He said: “Yes, I have been commanded to obey you.” The Prophet (ﷺ) looked at Jibril, who said: “O Muhammad, Allah longs to meet you.” The Prophet (ﷺ) said to the Angel of Death: “Proceed 2 with what you were commanded.” So he took his soul. When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) passed away and 3 condolences came, they heard a voice from the direction of the house: “Peace be upon you, people of the household, and Allah’s mercy and blessings. Indeed, in Allah is consolation for every calamity, compensation for every loss, and recovery for every missed opportunity. So, rely on Allah, fear Him, and hope in Him, for the truly afflicted is the one deprived of reward.” Ali said: “Do you know who this is? It is Al-Khidr 4.” [Narrated by Al-Bayhaqi in Dala’il an-Nubuwwah]
Notes /
1 His statement “asked about him”: The implied meaning is: The Prophet asked Jibril about Isma‘il, “Who is he?” Jibril said: “This is the Angel of Death seeking permission to approach you,” as if the Angel of Death appeared at that moment and was indicated. (As stated in Al-Lama’at)
2 His statement “Proceed with what you were commanded”: At-Tibi said: Ibn al-Jawzi mentioned this in Kitab al-Wafa and added after it: Jibril said, “Peace be upon you, O Messenger of Allah. This is my last step on earth; you were my need in this world.” Then his soul was taken. Indeed, we belong to Allah, and to Him we return. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
3 His statement “condolences came”: meaning from all directions of the house. His statement “in Allah”: meaning in Allah’s Book, “consolation” with fathah on the ‘ayn, meaning comfort for every calamity, referring to Allah’s words: “Give good tidings to the patient, who, when afflicted with calamity, say, ‘Indeed, we belong to Allah, and to Him we return’” [Al-Baqarah: 155-156]. Or in His reward, as compensation for every trial and affliction. At-Tibi said: It is permissible to imply an omitted phrase in “in Allah,” meaning in meeting Allah is comfort and patience for every calamity. His statement “compensation”: with two fathahs, meaning recompense for every loss. “Recovery”: with fathah on dal and ra, meaning retrieval for every missed opportunity. His statement “So, rely on Allah”: meaning, since it is so, with His help, strength, and power, “fear” impatience and panic, referring to Allah’s words: “Be patient, and your patience is only through Allah” [An-Nahl: 127]. His statement “hope in Him”: meaning do not hope in other than Him, for there is no god but Allah, or hope for reward from Him. “The truly afflicted”: in reality, is the one deprived of reward, in the passive form, meaning prevented from reward due to lack of patience in the face of calamity. The patience valued by the Lord is that shown at the first impact. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
4 His statement “It is Al-Khidr”: with fathah on kha and kasrah on dad. It is said: with kasrah and sukoon. In Tadhkirat al-Asma: It is permissible to have sukoon on dad with fathah or kasrah on kha. At-Tibi said: This clearly indicates that Al-Khidr is alive and present. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: When the Prophet (ﷺ) became heavy 1 with illness, distress overwhelmed him 2. Fatimah said: “Oh, the distress of my father!” He said to her: “There will be no distress on your father after today.” When he passed away, she said: “Oh, my father! 3 He answered 4 a Lord who called him. Oh, my father, whose abode is the Paradise of Firdaws 5. Oh, my father, to Jibril we lament him.” When he was buried, Fatimah said: “O Anas, how could your souls allow you to cast dirt upon the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)?” [Narrated by Bukhari]
Notes /
1 His statement “became heavy”: with fathah on tha and dammah on qaf, meaning his illness worsened. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
2 His statement “distress overwhelmed him”: meaning he fainted from the severity of the illness. (As stated in Al-Lama’at)
3 Her statement “Oh, my father!”: At-Tibi said: Its origin is “O my father,” with the ya replaced by ta, as both are additional letters, and the alif is for lamentation to prolong the voice, and the ha is for pause. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
4 Her statement “He answered a Lord who called him”: meaning to the Hereafter, choosing it over this world, with dammah on the pronoun ha, and sukoon in pause for rhyme. (As stated in Al-Mirqat) In Al-Mukhtar: There is no harm in eulogizing him with poetry or otherwise, but excessive praise is disliked, especially at his funeral.
5 Her statement “whose abode is the Paradise of Firdaws”: with fathah on mim and nominative case for “Paradise” in verified sources. Her statement “we lament him”: meaning we express condolence for him. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated: When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) passed away, they differed 1 about his burial. Abu Bakr said: “I heard from the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) something he said: ‘Allah does not take a prophet except in the place he loves to be buried in.’ Bury him in the place of his bed.” [Narrated by At-Tirmidhi]
Notes /
1 His statement “they differed about his burial”: meaning about the place of burial. Some said: In his mosque. Others said: In Al-Baqi with his companions. Others said: In Makkah. Others said: With his father Ibrahim (peace be upon him). Or about the burial itself, meaning whether to bury him. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: Abu Bakr said to Umar after the passing of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ): “Come, let us visit Umm Ayman as the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to visit her.” When they reached her, she wept. They said to her: “What makes you weep? Do you not know that what is with Allah is better for His Messenger?” She said: 1 “I do not weep because I am unaware that what is with Allah is better for the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), but I weep because revelation has ceased from the heavens.” She moved them to tears, and they began weeping with her. [Narrated by Muslim]
Notes /
1 Her statement “I do not weep because I am unaware”: with fathah on the hamzah, as it is the object of “I do not weep.” The meaning is: I do not weep for not knowing. Her statement “they began weeping with her”: weeping for this reason does not cease until the end of time. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
