Joking

English

1 The term Riqāq is the plural of Raqīq, meaning that which softens the heart. These narrations are called so because each one brings about tenderness in the heart. (As stated in Umdat al-Qari and Al-Mirqat, summarized from them.)

Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Do not argue with your brother, do not jest with him 1, and do not make a promise to him then break it.” [Narrated by At-Tirmidhi]

Notes /
English notes

1 His statement: “do not jest with him”: An-Nawawi said: The prohibited joking is that which is excessive and habitual, as it leads to laughter, hardens the heart, distracts from Allah’s remembrance and reflection on religious matters, often causes harm, breeds resentment, and diminishes dignity and respect. However, joking that is free from these issues is permissible, as the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) did so rarely for a beneficial purpose, to comfort the person addressed or show kindness, which is a recommended Sunnah. Know this, as it is greatly needed. [As stated in Al-Mirqat]

English

Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: They said, “O Messenger of Allah, you jest with us 1.” He said, “I only speak the truth.” [Narrated by At-Tirmidhi]

Notes /
English notes

1 His statement: “you jest with us”: Ali Al-Qari said: The apparent reason for their question was that he prohibited them from jesting. Issam, in Sharh Ash-Shamail, said: It is as if they asked whether jesting was exclusive to him, not to be emulated. He responded, “I only speak the truth,” meaning one who maintains truthfulness, avoids lying, and preserves dignity and respect may jest.

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Prophet (ﷺ) would interact with us to the extent that he would say to my young brother, “O Abu Umair, what has the little bird done? 1” He had a little bird he played with, and it died. [Agreed Upon]

Notes /
English notes

1 His statement: “what has the little bird done”: Abu Hanifah, Abu Yusuf, and Muhammad said there is no sanctuary for Madinah as there is for Makkah, so no one is prevented from hunting its game or cutting its trees. At-Tahawi supported their view with this Hadith, as Abu Umair took the little bird from Madinah. Ash-Shafi’i, Malik, and Ahmad said the sanctuary of Madinah is like that of Makkah. [As stated in Al-Urf Ash-Shadhi]

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: A man asked the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) for a mount. He said, “I will let you ride the foal of a she-camel.” The man said, “What would I do with the foal of a she-camel?” The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “Do camels give birth to anything but she-camels? 1” [Narrated by At-Tirmidhi and Abu Dawud]

Notes /
English notes

1 His statement: “Do camels give birth to anything but she-camels?”: The meaning is that if you had reflected, you would not have said that, as every camel is born from a she-camel. This combines kindness with guidance for him and others, indicating that one should reflect on a statement before rejecting it until its depth is understood. [As stated in Al-Mirqat]

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: A man from the desert named Zahir ibn Haram would bring gifts to the Prophet (ﷺ) from the desert, and the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) would equip him when he wished to leave. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Zahir is our desert, and we are his city.” The Prophet (ﷺ) loved him, though he was unattractive. One day, the Prophet (ﷺ) came to him while he was selling his goods and embraced him from behind, so he could not see him. He said, “Let me go, who is this?” He turned and recognized the Prophet (ﷺ), then kept his back pressed against the Prophet’s chest once he knew him. The Prophet (ﷺ) began saying, “Who will buy this slave?” He said, “O Messenger of Allah, by Allah, you will find me unsellable.” The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “But with Allah, you are not unsellable.” [Narrated in Sharh As-Sunnah]

The Prophet (ﷺ) said after Abu Bakr left, “How did you find me saving you from the man?” Abu Bakr stayed away for a few days, then sought permission again and found them reconciled. He said to them, “Include me in your peace as you included me in your conflict.” The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “We have done so, we have done so.” [Narrated by Abu Dawud]
