Drinks
Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to take three sips when drinking. 1 [Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim]
Muslim’s narration adds: And he would say: “It is more quenching, healthier, and more pleasant.”
Notes /
1 The statement: “Take three sips when drinking”: This means pausing three times during drinking. Al-Baghawi in “Sharh al-Sunnah” said: The hadith means to drink in three sips, each time removing the vessel from the mouth, breathing, then returning. The report prohibiting breathing into the vessel refers to breathing without removing it from the mouth. Al-Qadi said: Drinking in three sips quenches thirst better, aids digestion, and causes less cooling of the stomach and weakening of nerves. Ibn Hajar in “Sharh al-Shama’il” said: It is narrated with a good chain that the Prophet (ﷺ) drank in three sips, saying Bismillah when bringing the vessel to his mouth and Alhamdulillah when removing it, doing so three times, per “Al-Mirqat.” “Al-Alamgiriyyah” states: Do not drink in one gulp.
Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Do not drink in one gulp like a camel, but drink in two or three sips, say Bismillah when you drink, and Alhamdulillah when you finish.” [Narrated by al-Tirmidhi]
Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) prohibited breathing or blowing into the vessel. 1 [Narrated by Abu Dawud and Ibn Majah]
Notes /
1 The statement: “Or blowing into it”: “Al-Mirqat” states: If blowing is to cool the drink, one should wait; if to remove debris, use a toothpick or similar, not the finger, as it is repulsive, or pour out the water. “Radd al-Muhtar” in the Book of Prohibitions and Permissions says: The second opinion is that blowing into food is not disliked unless it makes a sound like “uff,” which is the basis of the prohibition.
Abu Sa’id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Prophet (ﷺ) prohibited blowing into the drink. A man said: “What if I see debris in the vessel?” He said: “Pour it out.” The man said: “I am not satisfied with one gulp.” He said: “Then remove the cup from your mouth and breathe.” [Narrated by al-Tirmidhi and al-Darimi]
Abu Sa’id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) prohibited drinking from the chipped part of a cup and blowing into the drink. [Narrated by Abu Dawud]
Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) prohibited drinking from the mouth of a waterskin. [Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim]
In their narration from Abu Sa’id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) prohibited “ikhtinath” of waterskins, adding in one narration: “Ikhtinath is turning its mouth and drinking from it.”
Al-Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah narrated from Kabshah: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) entered my house, drank standing from a hanging waterskin, so I stood and cut its mouth. We say: This hadith indicates the prohibition on drinking from a waterskin’s 2 mouth is for dislike, not forbiddance, and the act demonstrates permissibility.
Notes /
2 The statement: “Prohibited drinking from the mouth of a waterskin”: Al-Mazhar said: This is because water rushing into the stomach harms it, and the Prophet (ﷺ) commanded drinking in sips, as mentioned earlier. Also, gulping is blameworthy, and sucking water from a waterskin’s mouth prevents sipping. Al-Bayhaqi narrated from Anas (raised to the Prophet): “Sip water and do not gulp it.” “Al-Ghayathiyyah” states: Do not drink from the mouth of a waterskin or jug, as it may allow harmful substances to enter the throat, per “Al-Mirqat.”

Amr ibn Shu’ayb narrated from his father from his grandfather: I saw the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) drinking standing and sitting. [Narrated by al-Tirmidhi]
Al-Darimi, Ibn Majah, and al-Tirmidhi narrated from Ibn Umar: “We used to eat while walking 1 and drink while standing in the time of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ).”
Malik narrated from Ibn Shihab that Aishah, the Prophet’s wife (ﷺ), and Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas saw no harm in drinking while standing.
Malik also narrated from a source that Umar ibn al-Khattab, Uthman ibn Affan, and Ali ibn Abi Talib drank standing. Muhammad said: We take this view, seeing no harm in drinking standing, 2 which is the opinion of Abu Hanifah and most of our jurists.
Notes /
1 The statement: “We used to eat while walking, etc.”: “Al-Kawkab al-Durri” states: The prohibition in these matters is not for religious reasons but for health preservation, so doing them does not make one sinful, as the Prophet (ﷺ) showed and approved.
2 The statement: “No harm in drinking standing”: “Al-Alamgiriyyah” states: There is no issue with drinking standing. For further details and reconciliation of evidences, refer to “Radd al-Muhtar,” Book of Purification.

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Prophet (ﷺ) prohibited a man from drinking standing. [Narrated by Muslim]
In another narration: Abu Hurayrah said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Let none of you drink standing, and if one forgets, let them induce vomiting.”
Al-Tahawi and others said: The prohibition is for medical reasons, as drinking and eating standing have harms, not for religious reasons. Al-Sha’bi said: I dislike drinking standing because it is harmful.

Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated: I brought the Prophet (ﷺ) a bucket of Zamzam water, and he drank it standing. 1 [Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim]
Bukhari narrated from Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): He prayed Zuhr, sat attending to people’s needs in Kufa’s courtyard until Asr, was brought water, washed his face and hands, mentioned his head and feet, then stood and drank the remainder, saying: “Some people dislike drinking standing, but the Prophet (ﷺ) did as I did.”
Notes /
1 The statement: “He drank standing”: “Radd al-Muhtar,” quoting “Al-Siraj,” states: Drinking standing is not recommended except in two cases: Zamzam water and leftover wudu water. In Ibn al-Humam’s commentary on “Al-Hidayah”: It is from etiquette to drink leftover wudu water facing the Qiblah, standing or sitting as preferred.

Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Prophet (ﷺ) visited an Ansari man with a companion, greeted him, and the man, who was channeling water in his garden, responded. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “If you have water kept overnight in a waterskin, bring it; otherwise, we will drink directly.” The man said: “I have water kept overnight in a waterskin, so go to the shelter.” He poured water into a cup, milked a domestic goat into it, 2 and the Prophet (ﷺ) drank, then repeated for the companion to drink. [Narrated by Bukhari]
Ibn Majah narrated from Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both): We passed by a pond and began drinking directly from it. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Do not drink directly, but wash your hands and drink from them, for no vessel is purer than the hand.”
“Fath al-Bari” states: The prohibition is for dislike, and the act shows permissibility, or Jabir’s incident was before the prohibition, or the prohibition applies outside necessity, while the act was due to necessity.
Notes /
2 The statement: “Poured water into a cup, then milked into it”: This shows no issue with requesting cold water in intense heat, and it is permissible to mix milk with water for drinking, but not for selling, per “Umdat al-Qari.”

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: A domestic goat was milked for the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), and its milk was mixed with water from a well in Anas’s house. The Prophet (ﷺ) was given the cup and drank from it, with Abu Bakr on his left and a Bedouin on his right. Umar said: “Give it to Abu Bakr, O Messenger of Allah.” But he gave it to the Bedouin on his right, saying: “The right, then the right.” 1 In another narration: “Those on the right, those on the right, give preference to the right.” [Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim]
Muhammad in “Al-Muwatta” said: We take this view.
Notes /
1 The statement: “The right, then the right”: Al-Zarqani said: Anas said this is a Sunnah, meaning prioritize the right, even if less virtuous, with no opposition except Ibn Hazm, who said it is not permissible to prioritize the non-right without permission, per “Al-Ta’liq al-Mumajjad.” “Fath al-Bari” states: This is recommended by the majority, but Ibn Hazm said it is obligatory.
Sahl ibn Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: A cup was brought to the Prophet (ﷺ), and he drank from it, with a young boy, the youngest of the group, on his right, and elders on his left. He said: “O boy, will you permit me to give it to the elders?” The boy said: “I would not give my share from you to anyone, 2 O Messenger of Allah.” So he gave it to him. [Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim]
Notes /
2 The statement: “I would not give my share from you to anyone”: “Al-Mirqat” states: Scholars agree not to give preference in religious matters and acts of worship, but preference in worldly desires is disliked. For example, it is disliked to give up one’s rightful place in the first row of prayer. It also indicates that one who arrives first at a permissible place or a scholar’s gathering is more entitled to it than those who come later. Al-Nawawi said: Preference in religious matters is disliked, but in worldly desires, it is recommended.
Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Whoever drinks from a silver vessel is only gurgling the fire of Hell in their stomach.” 3 [Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim]
In Muslim’s narration: “Whoever eats or drinks from vessels of silver or gold…”
Notes /
3 The statement: “Whoever drinks from a silver vessel, etc.”: Al-Nawawi said: Scholars unanimously prohibit eating and drinking from gold or silver vessels for men and women, with no dissent. This includes using them for eating, drinking, purification, incense burners, urination, or any use, whether small or large. If food is served in them, transfer it to another vessel. If oil is in a silver bottle, pour it into the left hand, then the right, and use it. Decorating homes or shops with such vessels is prohibited, per “Al-Mirqat” and “Al-Hidayah.” Qadi Khan said: Eating, drinking, and anointing from gold or silver vessels, as well as incense burners, kohl containers, and oil containers, is disliked. For women, except for jewelry, eating, drinking, anointing, or sitting from gold or silver is like men. Men have no permission for gold items, except for a silver ring, sword hilt, or weapon adornment, as permitted. “Al-Hidayah” states: “Al-Jami’ al-Saghir” says it is disliked, meaning prohibited.
Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: “Do not wear silk or brocade, 1 and do not drink or eat from gold or silver vessels or their plates, for they are for them in this world and for us in the Hereafter.” [Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim]
Notes /
1 The statement: “Do not wear silk or brocade”: “Al-Mirqat” states: An exception is made for silk up to four fingers’ width at the garment’s edges, as is customary. If the weft is non-silk and the warp is silk, it is permissible; the reverse is not, except in war due to irritation or lice, per “Al-Hidayah.”
Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated: The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Whoever drinks from a vessel of gold, silver, or one containing any of that 2 is only gurgling the fire of Hell in their stomach.” [Narrated by al-Daraqutni]
Bukhari narrated from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him): The Prophet’s cup broke, and he replaced the crack with a silver chain. Ahmad narrated from Asim al-Ahwal: I saw at Anas’s house the Prophet’s cup with a silver patch.
Notes /
2 The statement: “Whoever drinks from a vessel of gold or silver or one containing any of that, etc.”: Abu Yusuf said: It is prohibitively disliked to use silver- or gold-plated beds, chairs, saddles, reins, stirrups, or similar, as the narrations are absolute, and this hadith from al-Daraqutni supports it, since using a vessel means using all its parts. This is the view of al-Shafi’i, Malik, and Ahmad. Abu Hanifah said: Drinking from a silver-plated vessel, riding a silver-plated saddle, or sitting on a silver-plated bed or chair is permissible if one avoids the silver part, meaning placing the mouth on the wooden part or sitting on the wood, not the silver or gold. Abu Hanifah’s evidence is Anas’s narration that the Prophet’s cup broke and was fixed with a silver chain, per Bukhari, and Ahmad’s narration from Asim al-Ahwal about the silver patch. Silver plating is secondary and not considered, like a silk-trimmed garment, a flag in cloth, or a gold nail in a ring. Al-Zayla’i said: This issue arose in Abu Ja’far al-Dawaniqi’s assembly, with Abu Hanifah and contemporary scholars present. The scholars said it is disliked, but Abu Hanifah was silent. When asked, he said: If the mouth touches the silver, it is disliked; otherwise, it is not. They asked: “How so?” He said: “If one wears a ring and drinks from their hand, is that disliked?” They were stumped, and Abu Ja’far admired his response. Muhammad’s view is reported with Abu Hanifah and also with Abu Yusuf, per “Qadi Khan,” “Radd al-Muhtar,” “Al-Binayah,” and “Al-Hidayah.”
