Notes /
1 The statement: "The best among you..." If it is asked: Which is better, learning the Qur’an or learning Fiqh (jurisprudence)? The answer is: The one occupied with Fiqh is better. This depends on a person’s need, because Fiqh is superior to mere recitation. However, in the time of the Prophet (ﷺ), the reciter was the most knowledgeable in Fiqh, which is why the reciter led the prayer. This is mentioned in ‘Umdat al-Qari’.

And the example of one who learns it but sleeps while it is in his heart is like a bag tied upon musk." [Narrated by Tirmidhi, Nasa’i, and Ibn Majah]

We said, "O Messenger of Allah, we would all love that." He said: "Why does not one of you go to the mosque and learn or recite two verses from the Book of Allah?
Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "These hearts rust just as iron rusts when water touches it." It was asked, "O Messenger of Allah, what is their polish?" He said: "Frequent remembrance of death and recitation of the Qur’an." [Narrated by al-Bayhaqi in Shu’ab al-Iman]
Abu Sa’id ibn al-Mu’alla (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: "I was praying in the mosque when the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) called me, but I did not respond. Later, I came to him and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, I was praying.’ He said: ‘Did Allah not say: "Respond to Allah and the Messenger when he calls you" (Al-Anfal: 24)? Then he said: ‘Shall I not teach you the greatest Surah in the Qur’an before you leave the mosque?’ He took my hand, and when we were about to leave, I said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, you said you would teach me the greatest Surah in the Qur’an.’ He said: "Alhamdulillahi Rabbil-‘Alamin (Surah Al-Fatihah), it is the Seven Oft-Repeated Verses and the Great Qur’an which I have been given."" [Narrated by Bukhari]
I say: As for the Hanafis, al-Tahtawi said in Hashiyat Maraqi al-Falah: "It is obligatory for the one praying to respond to the Prophet (ﷺ), and there is no disagreement that the prayer becomes invalid if he does not, as mentioned by Badr in his Tafsir of Surah Al-Anfal."
Notes /
1 The statement: "Respond to Allah and the Messenger..." Al-Hafiz said in Al-Fath: "The scholars ‘Abdul Wahhab and Abu al-Walid from the Malikis held that responding to the Prophet (ﷺ) during prayer is obligatory, and neglecting it is sinful, a ruling specific to the Prophet (ﷺ). The Shafi’is also hold this view, though they differ on whether the prayer becomes invalid or not."
2 The statement: "Alhamdulillahi Rabbil-‘Alamin" indicates that the Basmalah is not part of Surah Al-Fatihah, otherwise he would have said, "Bismillahir-Rahmanir-Rahim, Alhamdulillahi Rabbil-‘Alamin."

Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) asked Ubayy ibn Ka’b, "How do you recite in prayer?" He recited Umm al-Qur’an (Al-Fatihah). The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "By the One in Whose Hand is my soul, nothing like it has been revealed in the Torah, the Gospel, the Zabur, or the Qur’an. It is the Seven Oft-Repeated Verses and the Great Qur’an which I have been given." [Narrated by Tirmidhi]
Al-Darimi narrated it as a statement of the Prophet (ﷺ) without mentioning Ubayy ibn Ka’b. Tirmidhi said: "This Hadith is Hasan Sahih."

Abu Sa’id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that Usayd ibn Hudayr said: "While he was reciting Surah Al-Baqarah at night with his horse tied beside him, the horse suddenly became agitated. He stopped reciting, and it calmed down. When he resumed, it became restless again. He stopped, and it settled. When he recited again, the horse moved violently, so he stopped. His son Yahya was nearby, and he feared it might harm him. When he moved the child away, he looked up and saw something like a canopy with lamps. In the morning, he told the Prophet (ﷺ), who said: ‘Recite, O Ibn Hudayr! Recite, O Ibn Hudayr!’ He said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, I feared the horse might step on Yahya, so I turned to him and saw a canopy with lamps.’ The Prophet (ﷺ) said: ‘Those were angels drawing near at your recitation. Had you continued, people would have seen them in the morning, clearly visible.’" [Agreed upon, with Bukhari’s wording]

Ubayy ibn Ka’b (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "O Abu al-Mundhir, do you know which verse in the Book of Allah is the greatest with you?" He said, "Allah and His Messenger know best." The Prophet (ﷺ) repeated the question, and Ubayy replied: "Allahu la ilaha illa Huwa al-Hayy al-Qayyum (Ayat al-Kursi)." The Prophet (ﷺ) struck his chest and said: "By Allah, may knowledge be pleasant for you, O Abu al-Mundhir!" [Narrated by Muslim]

1 The statement: "The greatest..." It is mentioned in Al-‘Alamgiriyyah: "Some Surahs and verses are superior, like Ayat al-Kursi, in that their recitation carries greater reward and awakens the heart. However, it is best not to prefer some parts of the Qur’an over others at all, this is the preferred view."

The next morning, the Prophet (ﷺ) asked, ‘What did your prisoner do last night?’ I explained, and he said, ‘He lied to you and will return.’ Knowing he would return as the Prophet (ﷺ) predicted, I caught him again. He pleaded, ‘Release me, I will not return,’ but I seized him a third time. He said, ‘Let me teach you words that will benefit you: Recite Ayat al-Kursi before sleeping, and you will have a protector from Allah, and no Satan will come near you till morning.’ I released him. Farwah ibn Nawfal reported from his father (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "O Messenger of Allah, teach me something to say when I go to bed." He said: "Recite 'Say: O you disbelievers (Surah al-Kafirun), for it is a declaration of freedom from polytheism.'" [Narrated by Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud, and al-Darimi]
Abu al-Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Can't one of you recite one-third of the Qur'an in one night?" They said: "How can we recite one-third?" He said: "'Say: He is Allah, the One' (Surah al-Ikhlas) equals one-third of the Qur'an." [Narrated by Muslim, and Bukhari reported something similar from Abu Sa'id]
Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated: "The Prophet (ﷺ) sent a man in charge of an expedition who would recite Surah al-Ikhlas for his companions in prayer. When they returned, they mentioned this to the Prophet (ﷺ), who asked why he did so. The man replied: 'Because it describes the Most Merciful, and I love to recite it.' The Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'Tell him that Allah loves him.'" [Agreed upon]

1 His statement: "It is sealed, etc." In the last rak'ah after Al-Fatihah in every prayer, this surah is recited. This was mentioned in Al-Marqat. It was said in Al-'Alamgiriyyah: It is disliked to designate a specific part of the Qur'an for a specific part of the prayer. Al-Tahawi and Al-Isbijabi said: This applies if one considers it obligatory and necessary, such that nothing else is permissible, or considers reciting something else to be disliked. However, if one recites it for ease or to seek blessings, there is no dislike in that, provided that they occasionally recite something else so that an ignorant person does not assume that nothing else is permissible. This is stated in Al-Tabyin.

[Narrated by Tirmidhi who said: "This hadith is hasan gharib"]
Notes /
2 His statement: "Enter, etc." The scholars said: It is recommended for someone who learns about the virtues of certain deeds to act upon them at least once, even if the hadith is weak, as it is agreed upon to act upon it in such cases. This was mentioned in Al-Mirqat.

Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated: "When the Prophet (ﷺ) went to bed each night, he would cup his hands, blow into them, and recite Surah al-Ikhlas, Surah al-Falaq, and Surah an-Nas. Then he would wipe over as much of his body as he could, starting with his head and face. He would do this three times." [Agreed upon]
Notes /
1 His statement: "Then he blew into them, etc." Al-Nawawi said: It is recommended to blow during ruqyah (spiritual healing), and there is consensus on its permissibility. The majority of the Companions, their followers, and those after them recommended it.

Uqbah ibn Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Have you not seen the verses revealed tonight the like of which has never been seen? 'Say: I seek refuge with the Lord of the daybreak' and 'Say: I seek refuge with the Lord of mankind.'" [Narrated by Muslim]
Notes /
2 His statement: "Say: I seek refuge with the Lord of the dawn, etc." It appears that the Basmalah in these [surahs] is not part of their verses. This aligns with the view of the meticulous scholars among our companions that it was revealed to separate between surahs. This was mentioned in Al-Mirqat.

Uqbah ibn Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: "While I was traveling with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) between al-Juhfah and al-Abwa', we were enveloped by strong winds and darkness. The Prophet (ﷺ) began seeking refuge with 'Say: I seek refuge with the Lord of the daybreak' and 'Say: I seek refuge with the Lord of mankind,' saying: 'O Uqbah, seek refuge with them, for no one can seek refuge with anything better than them.'" Abdullah ibn Khubayb (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: "We went out on a rainy and extremely dark night looking for the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) to lead us in prayer. When we found him, he asked: 'Have you prayed?' I didn't answer. He said: 'Say...' but I remained silent. After repeating this three times, I asked what to say. He said: 'Recite "Say: He is Allah, the One" and the two refuge-seeking surahs (al-Falaq and an-Nas) three times each morning and evening - they will suffice you against everything.'" [Narrated by Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud, and Nasa'i]

Uqbah ibn Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I asked: 'O Messenger of Allah, teach me Surah Hud or Surah Yusuf.' He said: 'You will never recite anything more comprehensive before Allah than "Say: I seek refuge with the Lord of the daybreak."'" [Narrated by Ahmad, Nasa'i, and al-Darimi]
Notes /
1 His statement: "And recite with care, etc." That is, read with deliberation, clearly articulating the letters, observing the pauses, and fully pronouncing the vowel movements. This was mentioned in Al-Madarik.
2 His statement: "So recite, etc." That is, in prayer, where the command implies obligation, or outside of it, where the command implies recommendation, to recite what is easy for you from the Qur'an. Abu Hanifah reported from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: Whoever recites one hundred verses in a night will not be recorded among the heedless, and whoever recites two hundred verses will be recorded among the devout. This was mentioned in Al-Madarik. It was said in Tafsirat Ahmadiyah: If the intended meaning of His statement, "So recite," is recitation as a recommended act, scholars differed on its amount. Some said three verses daily, others said one hundred, and others said two hundred. Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: Whoever recites five verses daily will not be recorded among the heedless; whoever recites one hundred verses will be recorded among the obedient; whoever recites two hundred verses, the Qur'an will not dispute against him on the Day of Judgment; and whoever recites five hundred verses will have a qintar (great reward) recorded for him. From Abdullah ibn Umar, it is reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said to him: Complete [the Qur'an] once every month. He replied, I have more capacity. He said, Then once every twenty days. He replied, I have more capacity. He said, Then once every ten days. He replied, I have more capacity. He said, Then once every seven days, and do not exceed that. This is mentioned in Al-Husayni.
