The Prostration of Gratitude (Sujud al-Shukr)
Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: "Whenever the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) received joyful news or was informed of something good, he would fall into prostration, 1 thanking Allah, the Exalted." [Narrated by Abu Dawud and Tirmidhi]
Tirmidhi said: "This is a Hasan Gharib Hadith."
In Sharh al-Munyah, it is said: "He should say the takbir, face the qiblah, prostrate, praise Allah, thank Him, glorify Him, then say the takbir and raise his head."
Notes /
1 The statement: "He would fall into prostration." In Al-Durr al-Mukhtar, it is said: "The prostration of gratitude is recommended, and this is the fatwa (legal ruling)." In Rad al-Muhtar, it is said: "It is recommended for someone who receives a visible blessing, such as wealth, a child, or the removal of a calamity, to prostrate to Allah in gratitude, facing the qiblah. He should prostrate, praise Allah, thank Him, glorify Him, then say the takbir and raise his head, as in the prostration of recitation (sujud al-tilawah)."
Abu Ja’far reported: "The Prophet (ﷺ) saw a man from the Nughashi tribe prostrating in gratitude." [Narrated by Al-Daraqutni as a mursal hadith]
In Sharh al-Sunnah, the wording is similar to Al-Masabih.
Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated:
"We left Makkah with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) heading toward Madinah. When we were near Azwaza, he dismounted, raised his hands, and supplicated to Allah for a while. Then he fell into prostration and remained in it for a long time. He then stood, raised his hands again, and supplicated for a while. He fell into prostration again and remained in it for a long time. He repeated this a third time. Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said, 'I asked my Lord and interceded for my Ummah, and He granted me one-third of my Ummah. So I fell into prostration in gratitude to my Lord. Then I raised my head and asked my Lord for my Ummah again, and He granted me another third. I fell into prostration in gratitude to my Lord. Then I raised my head and asked my Lord for my Ummah once more, and He granted me the final third. I fell into prostration in gratitude to my Lord.'" [Narrated by Ahmad and Abu Dawud]

2 These hadiths and narrations all testify to Abu Hanifah’s view that the prayer for rain (Istisqa) is based on supplication and seeking forgiveness, not a formal prayer.
