Notes / الحواشي
English notes

1 The statement "they would do the same" indicates that the companions consistently practiced Qunut in Witr, as mentioned by Sheikh Ibn Al-Humam.

1 The statement "The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) performed Qunut after bowing for a month" means that Qunut is only performed outside of Witr during times of calamity. This is mentioned in Ad-Durr Al-Mukhtar. In Rad Al-Muhtar, it is stated: "If a calamity occurs, the Imam performs Qunut in the audible prayers." However, in Al-Ashbah, it is mentioned that Qunut is performed in Fajr prayer. This is supported by Sharh Al-Munyah, which states that the permissibility of Qunut during calamities is continuous. This is the view of our school and the majority. Hafiz Abu Ja'far At-Tahawi said: "We do not perform Qunut in Fajr prayer unless there is a calamity. If a calamity occurs, there is no harm in doing so, as the Prophet (ﷺ) did it. As for Qunut in all prayers during calamities, Ash-Shafi'i did not hold this view. It seems they considered the narrations about Qunut in Dhuhr and Isha prayers, as in Muslim, and in Maghrib prayer, as in Bukhari, to be abrogated due to the lack of consistent practice compared to Fajr prayer." This clearly indicates that Qunut during calamities in our school is specific to Fajr prayer and not other audible or silent prayers. It is also clear that the follower (ma'mum) follows the Imam, except when the Imam recites aloud, in which case the follower says "Ameen." Qunut is performed after bowing, not before, as evidenced by the narrations used by Ash-Shafi'i to support Qunut in Fajr, which explicitly mention Qunut after bowing. Our scholars interpreted this as Qunut during calamities. Later, Ash-Sharnuballi in Maraqi Al-Falah explicitly stated that it is performed after bowing, while Al-Hamawi suggested it is before bowing. The more apparent view is what we have stated.

The Prophet (ﷺ) performed Qunut after bowing for a month, supplicating against their killers.'" [Agreed upon by Bukhari and Muslim]
