And a man who fights in the cause of Allah, but his companions flee, and he knows what awaits him if he flees and what awaits him if he returns. In a version by Nasa'i: "If you cannot, then pray lying on your back.1 " "Allah does not burden a soul beyond its capacity." (Al-Baqarah, 2:286)
Notes /
1 The ruling on lying on one's back is that it is preferable in our school of thought over lying on one's side. The hadith of Imran is not a general proof, as it was addressed to him specifically due to his illness (hemorrhoids), which prevented him from lying on his back. Therefore, it is not a general ruling for the Ummah. Preference is given to the meaning, which is that lying on one's back allows one to face the Qiblah, fulfilling the obligation, unlike lying on one's side. For example, if one prostrates while lying on their back, it is directed toward the Qiblah, whereas lying on one's side would not face the Qiblah. This is mentioned in Al-Maraqat.
Imran ibn Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him): He asked the Prophet (ﷺ) about a man praying while sitting. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "If he prays standing, it is better. Whoever prays sitting will receive half the reward of one who prays standing, and whoever prays lying down 2 will receive half the reward of one who prays sitting." [Narrated by Bukhari]
Notes /
2 Al-Khattabi said: This refers to a sick person who is obligated to pray and could force himself to stand but with difficulty. Thus, his reward is doubled if he prays sitting, as an encouragement, even though praying lying down is permissible. Similarly, if he forces himself to stand despite the difficulty, his reward is doubled compared to praying sitting. This is mentioned in Majma' al-Bihar. In Al-Maraqat, it is stated: Is it permissible to pray voluntary prayers lying down when one is capable of standing or sitting? According to Abu Hanifah, it is not permissible. It is said that this hadith refers to an obligated sick person who could stand or sit but with difficulty and increased illness.
Abdullah ibn Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: "I was informed that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'The prayer of a man while sitting is half the prayer.' So I went to him and found him praying while sitting. I placed my hand on his head, and he said: 'What is the matter, O Abdullah ibn Amr?' I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I was told that you said: The prayer of a man while sitting is half the prayer, yet you are praying while sitting?' He said: 'Yes, but I am not like any of you.'" [Narrated by Muslim]
Salim ibn Abi Al-Ja'd reported: A man from Khuzaa said: "I wish I could pray and rest." It seemed as though they criticized him for this, so he said: "I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: 'O Bilal, call the prayer so that we may find rest in it.'" [Narrated by Abu Dawud]
