English

Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated: "The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to pray eleven rak'ahs between finishing Isha and Fajr. He would pray four rak'ahs – do not ask about their beauty and length – then pray another four rak'ahs – do not ask about their beauty and length – then pray three rak'ahs. He would prostrate 1 in each prostration long enough for one of you to recite fifty verses before raising his head. When the Mu’adhdhin fell silent after the Fajr call and the dawn became clear to him, he would stand and pray two brief rak'ahs. If I was awake, he would talk to me; otherwise, he would lie on his right side until the Mu’adhdhin came for the Iqamah, then he would go out (to the mosque)."

[Agreed upon] 2

In a narration by Bukhari: "Then he would pray Witr, lie down until the Mu’adhdhin came, then stand and pray two rak'ahs, then go out to pray Fajr."

In a narration by Abu Dawud: "Then he would lie down until the Mu’adhdhin came to call for Fajr prayer. He would pray two brief rak'ahs, then go out to pray."

Notes /
English notes

1 His statement: "He would prostrate" – Ali Al-Qari said: "The apparent meaning is that the letter 'fa' (then) is used to elaborate on the general statement, meaning he would prostrate in each of those prostrations for a long time."

2 His statement: "Agreed upon" – This refers to the collective agreement on the Hadith, even if it is not in this exact wording in a single narration, as mentioned in Mishkat Al-Masabih.

3 His statement: "He would talk to me" – Ali Al-Qari said: "His speech was undoubtedly from the speech of the Hereafter. As for worldly speech, it is undoubtedly contrary to the best practice at all times, let alone between prayers, because the wisdom behind the Sunnah is to prepare for a perfect state and dispel heedlessness, so one enters the obligatory prayer with full presence and delight."

When he prayed Isha – which is Atamah – he lay down for a while at night, then woke up and looked at the horizon. He said: 'Our Lord, You did not create this in vain,' until he reached: 'Indeed, You do not fail in Your promise.' (Quran 3:191-194). Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) reached for his bed, took a toothstick from it, poured water from a container nearby, and cleaned his teeth. Then he stood and prayed until I thought: 'He has prayed as long as he slept.' Then he lay down until I thought: 'He has slept as long as he prayed.' Then he woke up and did as he had done the first time, saying the same words. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) did this three times before Fajr." [Narrated by Al-Nasa’i]

He prayed two brief rak'ahs 1, then two very long rak'ahs, then two rak'ahs shorter than the previous two, then two rak'ahs shorter than those before them, then two rak'ahs shorter than those before them, then he prayed Witr. That made thirteen rak'ahs." 2 [Narrated by Muslim]

Notes /
English notes

1 His statement: "Two brief rak'ahs" – The two brief rak'ahs refer to the two rak'ahs after ablution. It is recommended to keep them short, as indicated by narrations emphasizing their brevity in both words and actions, as understood from Al-Azhar.

2 His statement: "That made thirteen rak'ahs" – In Al-Mabsut, it is mentioned that the maximum number of rak'ahs he prayed at night was eight, and the minimum was two. It is narrated that he sometimes prayed five rak'ahs, seven rak'ahs, nine rak'ahs, eleven rak'ahs, or thirteen rak'ahs. Those who said five rak'ahs meant two rak'ahs for night prayer and three for Witr. Those who said seven rak'ahs meant four for night prayer and three for Witr. Those who said nine rak'ahs meant six for night prayer and three for Witr. Those who said eleven rak'ahs meant eight for night prayer and three for Witr. Those who said thirteen rak'ahs meant eight for night prayer, three for Witr, and two for the Sunnah of Fajr. This is mentioned in Fath Al-Qadir.

English

Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: "I recognized the pairs of Surahs that the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to recite together." He mentioned twenty Surahs from the beginning of the Mufassal (short Surahs), according to the arrangement of Ibn Mas’ud, reciting two Surahs in each rak'ah, the last of which were Surah Al-Dukhan and Surah 'Amma Yatasa'aloon. [Agreed upon]

In a narration by Muslim from Shaqiq: "A man from Banu Bajilah, named Nahik ibn Sinan, came to Abdullah (ibn Mas’ud) and said: 'I recite the Mufassal in every rak'ah.' Abdullah said: 'Is this like reciting poetry? I know the pairs of Surahs that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to recite, two Surahs in each rak'ah. 3'"

Notes /
English notes

3 His statement: "Two Surahs in each rak'ah" – Iyad said: "This is consistent with the narration of Aisha that his night prayer was eleven rak'ahs, including Witr, and this was the extent of his recitation most of the time. His prolonging of the prayer was due to reflection and extending the pillars of prayer. His recitation of Surah Al-Baqarah and Surah An-Nisa’ was rare. Ibn Mas’ud’s disapproval of the man was to encourage him to reflect, not to say that reciting the Mufassal in one rak'ah is impermissible." This is mentioned in Al-Mirqat.

He would say: 'Allahu Akbar' three times, then say: 'Possessor of the kingdom, power, majesty, and greatness.' Then he would begin his recitation with Surah Al-Baqarah. His bowing was nearly as long as his standing, and he would say in his bowing: 'Subhana Rabbiyal-'Adheem.' When he raised his head from bowing, his standing was nearly as long as his bowing, and he would say: 'Lillahil-hamd.' His prostration was nearly as long as his standing, and he would say in his prostration: 'Subhana Rabbiyal-A'la.' When he raised his head from prostration, he would sit between the two prostrations for nearly as long as his prostration, saying: 'Rabbi ighfir li, Rabbi ighfir li.' He prayed four rak'ahs, reciting Surah Al-Baqarah, Surah Al-Imran, Surah An-Nisa’, and Surah Al-Ma’idah or Surah Al-An’am – Shu’bah was uncertain." [Narrated by Abu Dawud]
