Whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth glorifies Allah. For He is the Almighty, All-Wise.

All that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth glorifieth Allah, and He is the Mighty, the Wise.

ALL THAT IS in the heavens and all that is on earth extols God’s limitless glory: for He alone is almighty, truly wise.

All that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth glorifies Allah; and He is the Esteemed, the Wise.

Whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth (all) glorify Allah and He alone is Almighty, Most Wise

He is the One Who expelled the disbelievers of the People of the Book from their homes for ˹their˺ first banishment ˹ever˺. You never thought they would go. And they thought their strongholds would put them out of Allah’s reach. But ˹the decree of˺ Allah came upon them from where they never expected. And He cast horror into their hearts so they destroyed their houses with their own hands and the hands of the believers. So take a lesson ˹from this˺, O people of insight!

He it is Who hath caused those of the People of the Scripture who disbelieved to go forth from their homes unto the first exile. Ye deemed not that they would go forth, while they deemed that their strongholds would protect them from Allah. But Allah reached them from a place whereof they recked not, and cast terror in their hearts so that they ruined their houses with their own hands and the hands of the believers. So learn a lesson, O ye who have eyes!

He it is who turned out of their homes, at the time of [their] first gathering [for war], such of the followers of earlier revelation as were bent on denying the truth. You did not think [O believers] that they would depart [without resistance] - just as they thought that their strongholds would protect them against God: but God came upon them in a manner which they had not expected, and cast terror into their hearts; [and thus] they destroyed their homes by their own hands as well as the hands of the believers. Learn a lesson, then, O you who are endowed with insight!

It is He Who expelled the infidels of the Book from their homes for their first assemblage, you did not imagine that they would go forth and they thought that their fortresses would defend them against Allah. But the command of Allah came to them from whence they reckoned not, and it cast terror into their hearts that they destroy their dwellings with their own hands and the hands of the muslims. Therefore, take heed, O you, with eyes!

He is the One Who collected the disbelievers from amongst the People of the Book (i.e., the tribe of Banu Nadir) from their houses and banished them the first time (from Medina towards Syria). You did not (even) think that they would go away, and they thought that their strong fortresses would save them from (the seizure of) Allah. Then (the torment of) Allah came upon them from where they could not (even) imagine. And He (Allah) cast terror into their hearts, (and thus) they ruined their houses with their own hands and the believers’ hands. So, learn a lesson (from it), O people of vision

Had Allah not decreed exile for them, He would have certainly punished them in this world. And in the Hereafter they will suffer the punishment of the Fire.

And if Allah had not decreed migration for them, He verily would have punished them in the world, and theirs in the Hereafter is the punishment of the Fire.

And had it not been for God’s having ordained banishment for them, He would indeed have imposed [yet greater] suffering on them in this world: still, in the life to come there awaits them suffering through fire:

And had it not been that Allah had decreed for them to be uprooted from their homes He would have punished them in this world. And for them is a torment of Fire in the Hereafter.

And had Allah not written exile for them, He would have tormented them (more severely) in the world. And there is for them the punishment of Hell in the Hereafter (as well)

This is because they defied Allah and His Messenger. And whoever defies Allah, then Allah is truly severe in punishment.

That is because they were opposed to Allah and His messenger; and whoso is opposed to Allah, (for him) verily Allah is stern in reprisal.

this, because they cut themselves off from God and His Apostle: and as for him who cuts himself off from God and His Apostle - verily, God is severe in retribution!

This because they resisted Allah and His Messenger and whoso resists Allah and His Messenger -then undoubtedly, the torment of Allah is severe

That is because they showed extreme enmity against Allah and His Messenger (blessings and peace be upon him). (Their ringleader was Ka‘b b. Ashraf, a notorious denigrator of the Holy Prophet [blessings and peace be upon him].) And he who opposes Allah (and His Messenger), then Allah is Severe in punishment

Whatever palm trees you ˹believers˺ cut down or left standing intact, it was ˹all˺ by Allah’s Will, so that He might disgrace the rebellious.

Whatsoever palm-trees ye cut down or left standing on their roots, it was by Allah's leave, in order that He might confound the evil-livers.

Whatever [of their] palm trees you may have cut down, [O believers,] or left standing on their roots, was [done] by God’s leave, and in order that He might confound the iniquitous.

Whatever trees you cut down or left standing upon their roots, that was all by the leave of Allah and that He might disgrace the disobedients

(O believers!) The palm-trees that you cut down or left standing upon their roots (during the siege of Banu Nadir tribe—it) was done by Allah’s command so that He might humiliate and disgrace the disobedient

As for the gains Allah has turned over to His Messenger from them—you did not ˹even˺ spur on any horse or camel for such gains. But Allah gives authority to His messengers over whoever He wills. For Allah is Most Capable of everything.

And that which Allah gave as spoil unto His messenger from them, ye urged not any horse or riding-camel for the sake thereof, but Allah giveth His messenger lordship over whom He will. Allah is Able to do all things.

Yet [remember:] whatever [spoils taken] from the enemy God has turned over to His Apostle, you did not have to spur horse or riding-camel for its sake: but God gives His apostles mastery over whomever He wills - for God has the power to will anything.

And whatever spoils Allah gave to His Messenger from them, you rushed neither horse nor camel upon it, yes, but Allah gives control to His Messenger over whomsoever He please. And Allah can do everything.

And whatever spoils (materials of fay) Allah restored to His Messenger ([blessings and peace be upon him] taking out) from them, you galloped neither horses nor camels in (procuring) them. Yes indeed! Allah gives dominance and control to His Messengers over anyone He wills. And Allah has Absolute Power over everything

As for gains granted by Allah to His Messenger from the people of ˹other˺ lands, they are for Allah and the Messenger, his close relatives, orphans, the poor, and ˹needy˺ travellers so that wealth may not merely circulate among your rich. Whatever the Messenger gives you, take it. And whatever he forbids you from, leave it. And fear Allah. Surely Allah is severe in punishment.

That which Allah giveth as spoil unto His messenger from the people of the townships, it is for Allah and His messenger and for the near of kin and the orphans and the needy and the wayfarer, that it become not a commodity between the rich among you. And whatsoever the messenger giveth you, take it. And whatsoever he forbiddeth, abstain (from it). And keep your duty to Allah. Lo! Allah is stern in reprisal.

Whatever [spoils taken] from the people of those villages God has turned over to His Apostle - [all of it] belongs to God and the Apostle, and the near of kin [of deceased believers], and the orphans, and the needy, and the wayfarer, so that it may not be [a benefit] going round and round among such of you as may [already] be rich. Hence, accept [willingly] whatever the Apostle* gives you [thereof], and refrain from [demanding] anything that he withholds from you; and remain conscious of God: for, verily, God is severe in retribution.

Whatsoever spoils Allah gave to His Messenger from the people of the cities is for Allah and His Messenger and for the near relation, and orphans and the needy and the wayfarer, so that it be not the wealth of your rich. And whatsoever the Messenger gives you, take it, and whatsoever he forbids you, abstain from that. And fear Allah; undoubtedly, the torment of Allah is severe.

And whatever (materials of fay—spoils) Allah restored to His Messenger ([blessings and peace be upon him] taking out) from the people of (the towns captured without war in addition to those of Qurayza, Nadir, Fadak, Khaybar and ‘Urayna) belong to Allah and His Messenger (blessings and peace be upon him) and (the Messenger’s) near relatives (i.e., Banu Hashim and Banu ‘Abd al-Muttalib) and the orphans and the needy and the wayfarer (of society at large. This distribution system is to ensure) that (the whole wealth) may not circulate (only) amongst the rich of you (but should circulate amongst all the classes of society). And whatever the Messenger (blessings and peace be upon him) gives you, take that and whatever he forbids you, abstain (from that) and keep fearing Allah (i.e., never scoff at the Messenger’s distribution and award). Surely, Allah is Severe to punish

˹Some of the gains will be˺ for poor emigrants who were driven out of their homes and wealth, seeking Allah’s bounty and pleasure, and standing up for Allah and His Messenger. They are the ones true in faith.

And (it is) for the poor fugitives who have been driven out from their homes and their belongings, who seek bounty from Allah and help Allah and His messenger. They are the loyal.

[Thus, part of such war-gains shall be given] to the poor among those who have forsaken the domain of evil: those who have been driven from their homelands and their possessions, seeking favour with God and [His] goodly acceptance, and who aid [the cause of] God and His Apostle: it is they, they who are true to their word!

For those poor refugees who were driven out from their homes and their possessions seeking grace of Allah and His pleasure, and helping Allah and His Messenger. They are the truthful

(The fore-mentioned fay materials) are (also) for the poor Emigrants who are driven out of their houses and possessions (and properties). They seek Allah’s bounty and His favour and pleasure. And they help Allah and His Messenger ([blessings and peace be upon him] by sacrificing their possessions and homeland). It is they who are the true believers

As for those who had settled in the city and ˹embraced˺ the faith before ˹the arrival of˺ the emigrants, they love whoever immigrates to them, never having a desire in their hearts for whatever ˹of the gains˺ is given to the emigrants. They give ˹the emigrants˺ preference over themselves even though they may be in need. And whoever is saved from the selfishness of their own souls, it is they who are ˹truly˺ successful.

Those who entered the city and the faith before them love those who flee unto them for refuge, and find in their breasts no need for that which hath been given them, but prefer (the fugitives) above themselves though poverty become their lot. And whoso is saved from his own avarice - such are they who are successful.

And [it shall be offered, too, unto the poor from among] those who, before them, had their abode in this realm and in faith - [those] who love all that come to them in search of refuge, and who harbour in their hearts no grudge for whatever the others may have been given, but rather give them preference over themselves, even though poverty be their own lot: for, such as from their own covetousness are saved - it is they, they that shall attain to a happy state!

And those who had established their home in this city and in faith from before, love those who emigrated to them, and find not in their breasts, any need for what they have been given and prefer them above their souls, even though they be badly in need of, and whoso is guarded against the avarice of his own soul, those they are the successful.

(These spoils are for those Ansar [Supporters] as well) who had taken the city (of Medina) and the faith as their home before (the Emigrants came). They love those who have come to them as Emigrants, and do not feel any need (or niggardly feeling) in their hearts pertaining to that (wealth) which is given to the Emigrants, and prefer them to themselves, even though they may themselves be in dire need. And he who is saved from the miserliness of his (ill-commanding) self, it is they who are successful and victorious

10

And those who come after them will pray, “Our Lord! Forgive us and our fellow believers who preceded us in faith, and do not allow bitterness into our hearts towards those who believe. Our Lord! Indeed, You are Ever Gracious, Most Merciful.”

And those who came (into the faith) after them say: Our Lord! Forgive us and our brethren who were before us in the faith, and place not in our hearts any rancour toward those who believe. Our Lord! Thou art Full of Pity, Merciful.

And so, they who come after them pray: “O our Sustainer! Forgive us our sins, as well as those of our brethren who preceded us in faith, and let not our hearts entertain any unworthy thoughts or feelings against [any of] those who have attained to faith. O our Sustainer! Verily, Thou art compassionate, a dispenser of grace!”

And those who came after them submit, O our Lord! Forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in the faith, and put not into our hearts any rancour towards those who believe. O our Lord! Undoubtedly, you are the Beneficent the Merciful.

And those (too) who came after these (Emigrants and the Ansar [Supporters]) submit: ‘O our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who have preceded in embracing faith. And let not any spite and rancour be in our hearts against the believers. O our Lord, surely, You are Most Clement, Ever-Merciful.

Have you ˹O Prophet˺ not seen the hypocrites who say to their fellow disbelievers from the People of the Book, “If you are expelled, we will certainly leave with you, and We will never obey anyone against you. And if you are fought against, we will surely help you.”? But Allah bears witness that they are truly liars.

Hast thou not observed those who are hypocrites, (how) they tell their brethren who disbelieve among the People of the Scripture: If ye are driven out, we surely will go out with you, and we will never obey anyone against you, and if ye are attacked we verily will help you. And Allah beareth witness that they verily are liars.

ART THOU NOT aware of how those who would always dissemble [their real feelings] speak to their truth-denying brethren from among the followers of earlier revelation: “If you are driven away, we shall most certainly go forth with you, and shall never pay heed to anyone against you; and if war is waged against you, we shall most certainly come to your succour.” But God bears witness that they are most flagrantly lying:

Have you not seen the hypocrites? They say to their brothers, the infidels of the Book, 'if you are turned out' we will surely go with you, and will never obey anyone against you, and if you are fought against, we will surely help you. And Allah witnesses that they are liars.

Have you not seen the hypocrites who say to their brothers amongst the People of the Book who have become disbelievers: ‘If you are driven out (from here), we too will necessarily leave with you and will never obey anyone in your case, and if you are attacked, we will most certainly help you’? But Allah bears witness that they are certainly liars

12

Indeed, if they are expelled, the hypocrites will never leave with them. And if they are fought against, the hypocrites will never help them. And even if the hypocrites did so, they would certainly flee, then the disbelievers would be left with no help.

(For) indeed if they are driven out they go not out with them, and indeed if they are attacked they help them not, and indeed if they had helped them they would have turned and fled, and then they would not have been victorious.

[for] if those [to whom they have pledged themselves] are indeed driven away, they will not go forth with them; and if war is waged against them, they will not come to their succour; and even if they [try to] succour them, they will most certainly turn their backs [in flight], and in the end will [themselves] find no succour.

If they are turned out, they will not go forth with them, and if they are fought against, they will not help them. Even if they helped them. They would then run away turning their backs and then they shall not be helped.

If they (the mischief-monger Jews) are driven out (from Medina), these (hypocrites) will never leave with them. Nor will they help them if they are put to fight. But if (at all) they do come to their help, they will for sure flee, turning their backs. Then they will not be helped (from anywhere)

Indeed, there is more fear in their hearts for you ˹believers˺ than for Allah. That is because they are a people who do not comprehend.

Ye are more awful as a fear in their bosoms than Allah. That is because they are a folk who understand not.

Nay, [O believers,] you arouse in their bosoms a fear more intense than [even their fear of] God: this, because they are people who fail to grasp the truth.

Undoubtedly, they have greater fear of you in their hearts than of Allah. This is because they are a people having no understanding.

(O Muslims!) Indeed, they have greater fear of you in their hearts than Allah’s. The reason is that they are the people who do not possess understanding

14

Even united, they would not ˹dare˺ fight against you except ˹from˺ within fortified strongholds or from behind walls. Their malice for each other is intense: you think they are united, yet their hearts are divided. That is because they are a people with no ˹real˺ understanding.

They will not fight against you in a body save in fortified villages or from behind walls. Their adversity among themselves is very great. Ye think of them as a whole whereas their hearts are divers. That is because they are a folk who have no sense.

Never will they fight you, [even] in unison, otherwise than from within fortified strongholds or from behind walls. Severe is their warlike discord among themselves: thou wouldst think that they are united, whereas [in fact] their hearts are at odds [with one another]: this, because they are people who will not use their reason.

They shall not even fight against you all together, but in fortified cities or from behind walls. Their velour is severe among themselves. You will think them as united gang, but their hearts are scattered. This is because they are a people having no sense.

They (the Jews of Medina, who breached the treaty, and the hypocrites) will not be able to fight against you (even) allied, except in fortified towns or taking cover behind walls. They fight hard (but) amongst themselves. You think they are united, whereas their hearts are disunited. The reason is that they do not apply reason

They are ˹both just˺ like those who recently went down before them: they tasted the evil consequences of their doings. And they will suffer a painful punishment.

On the likeness of those (who suffered) a short time before them, they taste the ill-effects of their own conduct, and theirs is painful punishment.

[To both kinds of your enemies, O believers, is bound to happen] the like of [what happened to] those who, a short while before them, had to taste the evil that came from their own doings, with [yet more] grievous suffering awaiting them [in the life to come]:

They are like those who were just a short time before them. They tasted the evil consequences of their doings, and for them is the painful torment.

(Their plight) resembles those who have tasted the evil consequences of their works shortly before them (i.e., the idolaters of Mecca in Badr and Banu Nadir, Banu Qaynuqa‘ and Banu Qurayza of the Jews, etc.). And there is for them a grievous punishment (in the Hereafter as well)

16

˹They are˺ like Satan when he lures someone to disbelieve. Then after they have done so, he will say ˹on Judgment Day˺, “I have absolutely nothing to do with you. I truly fear Allah—the Lord of all worlds.”

(And the hypocrites are) on the likeness of the devil when he telleth man to disbelieve, then, when he disbelieveth saith: Lo! I am quit of thee. Lo! I fear Allah, the Lord of the Worlds.

the like of [what happens] when Satan says unto man, “Deny the truth!” - but as soon as [man] has denied the truth, [Satan] says, “Behold, I am not responsible for thee: behold, I fear God, the Sustainer of all the worlds!”

Like Satan (devil) when he said to man, 'disbelieve', and then when he disbelieved, he said, 'I am quit of you, I fear Allah the Lord of the entire world'.

(The example of hypocrites) is like that of Satan when he says to man: ‘Become a disbeliever,’ but when he disbelieves, he (Satan) says: ‘I feel sick of you. Surely, I fear Allah, the Lord of all the worlds.

So they will both end up in the Fire, staying there forever. That is the reward of the wrongdoers.

And the consequence for both will be that they are in the Fire, therein abiding. Such is the reward of evil-doers.

Thus, in the end, both [the deniers of the truth and the hypocrites] will find themselves in the fire, therein to abide: for such is the recompense of evildoers.

And the end of both was this, that they both are in fire, abiding therein. And such is the punishment of the unjust.

Then both of them will end up in Hell and will dwell in it forever. And that is indeed the punishment of the wrongdoers

O believers! Be mindful of Allah and let every soul look to what ˹deeds˺ it has sent forth for tomorrow. And fear Allah, ˹for˺ certainly Allah is All-Aware of what you do.

O ye who believe! Observe your duty to Allah. And let every soul look to that which it sendeth on before for the morrow. And observe your duty to Allah. Lo! Allah is Informed of what ye do.

O YOU who have attained to faith! Remain conscious of God; and let every human being look to what he sends ahead for the morrow! And [once again]: Remain conscious of God, for God is fully aware of all that you do;

'O believers! Fear Allah and let every soul should see that what it sent forth for the morrow' and fear Allah. Undoubtedly Allah is aware of your doings.

O believers! Keep fearing Allah. And everyone should be vigilant to what he has sent forward for tomorrow (the Day of Reckoning). And always fear Allah. Indeed, Allah is Well Aware of what you do

And do not be like those who forgot Allah, so He made them forget themselves. It is they who are ˹truly˺ rebellious.

And be not ye as those who forgot Allah, therefor He caused them to forget their souls. Such are the evil-doers.

and be not like those who are oblivious of God, and whom He therefore causes to be oblivious of [what is good for] their own selves: [for] it is they, they who are truly depraved!

And be not like those who have already forgotten Allah, and so He put them in distress that they may not remember their own souls. It is they that are disobedients.

And be not like those who forgot Allah. So Allah made them forget their own souls (that they could send forward some good for their own souls). It is they who are defiant

The residents of the Fire cannot be equal to the residents of Paradise. ˹Only˺ the residents of Paradise will be successful.

Not equal are the owners of the Fire and the owners of the Garden. The owners of the Garden, they are the victorious.

Not equal are those who are destined for the fire and those who are destined for paradise: those who are destined for paradise - it is they, they [alone] who shall triumph [on Judgment Day]!

The inhabitants of the Fire and the inhabitants of the Paradise are not equal. The inhabitants of the Paradise they attained to their goal.

The inmates of Hell and the people of Paradise cannot be equal. It is the people of Paradise who are successful and victorious

Had We sent down this Quran upon a mountain, you would have certainly seen it humbled and torn apart in awe of Allah. We set forth such comparisons for people, ˹so˺ perhaps they may reflect.

If We had caused this Qur'an to descend upon a mountain, thou (O Muhammad) verily hadst seen it humbled, rent asunder by the fear of Allah. Such similitudes coin We for mankind that haply they may reflect.

HAD WE bestowed this Qur’an from on high upon a mountain, thou wouldst indeed see it humbling itself, breaking asunder for awe of God. And [all] such parables We propound unto men, so that they might [learn to] think.

If We had sent down this Quran upon any mountain, you would certainly have seen it humbled and split asunder for fear of Allah. And those examples, We profound for mankind that they may reflect.

Had We sent down this Qur’an on some mountain, then, (O listener,) you would certainly have seen it bowed, split and crushed to pieces for fear of Allah. And We give these examples for the people so that they may ponder

He is Allah—there is no god ˹worthy of worship˺ except Him: Knower of the seen and unseen. He is the Most Compassionate, Most Merciful.

He is Allah, than Whom there is no other Allah, the Knower of the Invisible and the Visible. He is the Beneficent, Merciful.

GOD IS HE save whom there is no deity: the One who knows all that is beyond the reach of a created being’s perception, as well as all that can be witnessed by a creature’s senses or mind: He, the Most Gracious, the Dispenser of Grace.

He is Allah, besides Whom there is none to be worshipped, the Knower of everything hidden and open. He is the Most Affectionate, the Merciful.

Allah is He besides Whom there is no God: the Knower of the unseen and the seen. He alone is Most Kind, Ever-Merciful

He is Allah—there is no god except Him: the King, the Most Holy, the All-Perfect, the Source of Serenity, the Watcher ˹of all˺, the Almighty, the Supreme in Might, the Majestic. Glorified is Allah far above what they associate with Him ˹in worship˺!

He is Allah, than Whom there is no other Allah, the Sovereign Lord, the Holy One, Peace, the Keeper of Faith, the Guardian, the Majestic, the Compeller, the Superb. Glorified be Allah from all that they ascribe as partner (unto Him).

God is He save whom there is no deity: the Sovereign Supreme, the Holy, the One with whom all salvation rests, the Giver of Faith, the One who determines what is true and false, the Almighty, the One who subdues wrong and restores right, the One to whom all greatness belongs! Utterly remote is God, in His limitless glory, from anything to which men may ascribe a share in His divinity!

He is Allah, besides Whom none is to be worshipped the Sovereign, the most Holy, the Bestower of peace, the Giver of Security, the Protector, the Esteemed one, the Exalted the Majestic. Glory is to Allah from what they associate.

Allah is He apart from Whom there is no God: (the Real) King, the Most Pure of all shortcomings, Perfectly Free from all imperfections (and the Bestower of Peace), the Giver of security and protection (and the Attester of the Messengers by means of Miracles), the Guardian and Watchful, the Almighty and the Lord of Honour, the Lord of Great Majesty, the Supreme Authority and the Supremely Great. Glory be to Allah, far above all that they associate with Him

He is Allah: the Creator, the Inventor, the Shaper. He ˹alone˺ has the Most Beautiful Names. Whatever is in the heavens and the earth ˹constantly˺ glorifies Him. And He is the Almighty, All-Wise.

He is Allah, the Creator, the Shaper out of naught, the Fashioner. His are the most beautiful names. All that is in the heavens and the earth glorifieth Him, and He is the Mighty, the Wise.

He is God, the Creator, the Maker who shapes all forms and appearances! His [alone] are the attributes of perfection. All that is in the heavens and on earth extols His limitless glory: for He alone is almighty, truly wise!

He is Allah, the Makers the Creater, the Bestower of form to everyone. His are all good names; all that is in the heavens and the earth glorifies Him: and He is the Esteemed One the Wise.

Allah is He Who is the Creator, the One Who brings into existence from nothingness (i.e., the Inventor), the Bestower of Form; (in short) all Beautiful Names belong to Him alone. All that is in the heavens and the earth glorifies Him, the Lord of Honour, the Most Wise
