In this chapter, the types of the Quran and the methods of reciting it are discussed. Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, says: 'So recite what is easy from the Quran' (Surah Muzzammil, verse number: 20). This is the guidance of Allah Almighty, instructing us to recite the Quran with ease and convenience.
The Qur'an has been revealed seven times.
Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: "I heard Hisham ibn Hakim reciting Surah al-Furqan differently from how the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) had taught me... The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'Indeed this Qur'an has been revealed in seven different modes (ahruf), so recite whichever is easy for you.'" [Agreed upon]
(1) His statement: "In seven different modes, etc." It is permissible with the seven narrations, and even with the ten, as stated in Asl al-Usul. However, it is preferable not to recite rare narrations among the common people to safeguard their religion, meaning rare narrations and inclinations, as some fools say what they do not know, falling into sin and misery. Imams should not burden the common people with what diminishes their religion. They should not recite among them like the recitations of Abu Jafar, Ibn Amir, Ali ibn Hamza, and Al-Kisai to protect their religion, lest they mock or laugh, even though all recitations and narrations are correct and eloquent. Our scholars chose the recitation of Abu Amr and Hafs from Asim. This is from Al-Tatarkhaniyyah, from Fatawa al-Hujjah, as mentioned in Al-Durr al-Mukhtar and Radd al-Muhtar. He ordered its writing, but it was scattered on parchments and the like. Abu Bakr ordered its copying from one place to a collected place, like papers found in the Prophet’s house with the Qur'an dispersed, which a compiler gathered and tied with a thread so nothing would be lost. This is in Al-Itqan. Al-Marqat and Umdat al-Qari, compiled from them.

Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: "The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'Both of you are correct. Do not differ, for those before you differed and were destroyed.'" [Narrated by Bukhari]

Ubayy ibn Ka‘b (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: I was in the mosque when a man entered and prayed, reciting in a manner I disapproved of. Then another man entered and recited differently from the first. When we finished the prayer, we all went to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). I said"This man recited in a way I disapproved of, and then another came and recited differently from his companion." The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) instructed them to recite, and he approved of both their recitations. At that moment, doubt entered my heart, something I had not felt even during the days of ignorance. When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) saw the distress that had overcome me, he said"By Allah, it is good." Abu Bakr kept reassuring me until Allah opened my heart to what He had opened the hearts of Abu Bakr and Umar (may Allah be pleased with them). I then sought to gather the entire Qur’an from palm stalks, thin white stones, and the memories of men, until I found the last verses of Surah At-Tawbah with Abu Khuzaymah al-Ansari, which I did not find with anyone else: Indeed, there has come to you a Messenger from among yourselves... (9:128) to the end of Surah Bara’ah. The compiled sheets remained with Abu Bakr until his death, then with Umar during his lifetime, and then with Hafsah, the daughter of Umar [Narrated by Bukhari].
(1) The statement: "And the memories of men", because they had memorized its miraculous composition and recognized its structure. They had witnessed its recitation from the Prophet (ﷺ) for twenty years, so falsifying anything not part of it was impossible. The only concern was the loss of some authentic parts. As stated in Al-Mirqah.
(2) The statement: "I did not find it with anyone else", this indicates that Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) was not satisfied with merely finding it written down unless he also had oral testimony confirming it, even though he himself had memorized it. He did this as an extra precaution. Al-Sakhawi in Jamal al-Qurra’ said: The meaning is that both witnesses confirmed that what was written had been transcribed in the presence of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), or that it was one of the authentic recitations. Abu Shama said their intention was to only write what had been transcribed before the Prophet (ﷺ), not merely based on oral transmission. As cited in Al-Mirqah.
(3) The statement: Indeed, there has come to you..., The last verses of Surah Bara’ah were only found with Abu Khuzaymah ibn Thabit. He said"Write them, for the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) considered his testimony equal to that of two men." So they wrote it. Umar also brought the verse of stoning, but it was not written because it was only attested by him alone. The summary is that they only compiled what was confirmed by definitive evidence in wording and probable evidence in writing. As stated in Al-Mirqah.
(4) The statement: "The compiled sheets remained with Abu Bakr...", It is disliked to recite the Qur’an in reverse order, such as reciting a higher-numbered surah in the second rak‘ah than in the first, because the order of surahs is part of the etiquette of recitation. However, it is permitted for children to facilitate learning, except when completing the Qur’an. As mentioned in Sharh al-Muniyyah: In Al-Walawaliyyah, it is stated that one who completes the Qur’an in prayer should, after finishing Al-Mu‘awwidhatayn in the first rak‘ah, bow and then recite Al-Fatihah and part of Surah Al-Baqarah in the second rak‘ah, because the Prophet (ﷺ) said"The best of people are those who are constantly engaged (with the Qur’an)." Al-Durr al-Mukhtar and Radd al-Muhtar, summarized.
Note: Here numbering is missing in Arabic book from 2667 to 2670.
In the first of the two narrations mentioned, when the Blessed Gabriel (peace be upon him) came thrice with a command, the Prophet (peace be upon him) was granted the right to make three accepted supplications. In the second narration, the Noble Prophet (peace be upon him) was granted the right to make three accepted supplications after making three requests through the mediation of Gabriel (peace be upon him). This second narration shows the Prophet's (peace be upon him) concern for his ummah.12 Additionally, the sixth hadith.

When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ met with Gabriel, he said, 'O Gabriel, I have been sent as a messenger to an unlettered nation, among whom are old women, old men, and those who are blind, and there are people among them who have never read any book. If I were to teach all of them to recite the Qur'an, they would be able to recite it.' Gabriel replied, 'O Muhammad ﷺ! Do not worry about the guidance of your nation, for the Qur'an has descended from the Preserved Tablet to the House of Honor. If you ask Allah Almighty, He will grant you permission to teach them the Qur'an.' This hadith is narrated by Tirmidhi.
In a narration from Imam Ahmad and Abu Dawud, it is stated that Gabriel ﷺ said: 'Each of these seven Qurans is a healing and a mercy for the hearts of Muslims, and each Quran is sufficient for establishing truth. And they are one in their meaning and what they signify, and they are a proof in terms of their capability.'
Once, Gabriel and Michael, peace be upon them, came to me, and Gabriel approached me on my right side. Michael stood on my left side. Gabriel said to me: 'Recite the Qur'an with one recitation.' Then Michael said to me to request from Gabriel to ask Allah, the Exalted, to permit the recitation of the Qur'an with more than one recitation. Thus, through Gabriel, I continued to make this request until the command was given to recite the Qur'an with seven recitations. This is sufficient and beneficial for the Muslims.
Tadmur is a city in the region of Sham. One day, Ibn Mas'ud recited Surah Yusuf, and a man said, 'This surah was not revealed in the way you have recited it.' Ibn Mas'ud replied, 'By Allah, I recited this surah in the same manner before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said to me, “You have recited it well.”' As he was speaking, a smell of garlic came from the man's mouth, so he said, 'Do you eat garlic and then dispute about the recitation of the Book of Allah?' Then he cursed him with the curse of Thari. This narration is agreed upon by Bukhari and Muslim.

Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (RA) said regarding the battle of Abylaimar (the battle of Yamamah, which took place against Musaylimah the Liar and those who did not pay Zakah during his caliphate, in which seven hundred memorizers were martyred): 'The Qur'an should be recited in order, and the method of completing it is as follows: After the Qur'an was compiled, it remained with Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (RA), and from him, the method of reciting the Qur'an was learned, which states that the Qur'an should be recited in its proper sequence, whether in prayer or outside of prayer. Reciting the Qur'an in any other way is not permissible. When the recitation of the Qur'an is being completed in prayer, the method is as follows: In the first rak'ah of the last cycle, recite the Mu'awwidhatayn, and in the second rak'ah, after Surah Al-Fatihah, begin Surah Al-Baqarah. Outside of prayer, when completing the recitation of the Qur'an, it should be done in this manner because the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: The most honorable person is the one who, after completing the recitation of the Qur'an, begins to review it.'

Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman came to Uthman after fighting alongside the people of Syria in the conquest of Armenia and Azerbaijan with the people of Iraq. Hudhayfah was alarmed by their differences in recitation and said to Uthman"O Leader of the Believers, save this ummah before they differ over the Book as the Jews and Christians did." So Uthman sent word to Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her)"Send us the compiled sheets so we may copy them into codices and then return them to you." Hafsah sent them to Uthman, who then ordered Zayd ibn Thabit, Abdullah ibn al-Zubayr, Sa‘id ibn al-‘As, and Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Harith ibn Hisham to transcribe them into codices. Uthman told the three Qurayshi men"If you and Zayd ibn Thabit disagree over any part of the Qur’an, write it in the dialect of Quraysh, for it was revealed in their tongue." They did so until they had copied the sheets into codices. Uthman then returned the sheets to Hafsah and sent a copy to every region. He also ordered that any other Qur’anic writings on scrolls or in codices be burned [Narrated by Bukhari]
(1) The statement: "He sent a copy to every region...", The difference between Abu Bakr’s compilation and Uthman’s is that Abu Bakr’s was motivated by the fear that parts of the Qur’an might be lost with the death of its memorizers, as it had not yet been compiled in one place. He gathered it into sheets, arranging its verses and surahs as the Prophet (ﷺ) had taught them. The purpose of Abu Bakr’s compilation was to preserve the Qur’an in all its recitations and dialects, including those of Quraysh and others. Uthman’s compilation, however, was prompted by widespread differences in recitation as people read in their own dialects. This led some to accuse others of error, so Uthman feared escalation. He thus transcribed the sheets into a single codex, arranging its surahs and limiting it to the dialect of Quraysh, arguing that the Qur’an was revealed in their tongue. Although other dialects had initially been permitted to ease difficulty, Uthman saw that the need for this had passed and restricted it to one dialect. Thus, Abu Bakr’s compilation differed from Uthman’s. Summarized from Al-Mirqah.
(2) The statement: "Be burned", Our Hanafi scholars state that if a Qur’anic codex becomes worn and unusable, it should be buried in a clean place away from foot traffic. As mentioned in ‘Umdat al-Qari, this is supported by Ibn Abi Dawud’s narration that a member of Abu Talhah’s family said Uthman buried the codices between the grave and the pulpit. As for burning, Abd al-Razzaq reported that Ibrahim disliked it. Al-Qari said analogizing Uthman’s action is impermissible because he only burned what was confirmed not to be part of the Qur’an or what was irretrievably mixed with it. He chose burning to eliminate doubt, had it been Qur’an, no Muslim would have permitted its burning. This is further evidenced by the lack of instruction to preserve its ashes from impurity, contrary to the Shafi‘i view of transformation. The discussion here concerns what is definitively established. Given the distinction and apparent disrespect, burial is obligatory. In Nafi‘ al-Mufti wa al-Sa’il, it is stated that discarded papers containing Allah’s name should be erased and then thrown into abundant water or buried in clean earth. As in Nasab al-Ihtisab, people neglect this, tearing and scattering such papers in pathways and filth without concern. In Al-Dhakhirah: A worn codex that can no longer be read should not be burned, this is Muhammad’s view, and we follow it. Burial is not disliked; it should be wrapped in a clean cloth and placed in a niche to avoid trampling. Alternatively, it may be washed with water or stored in a clean place safe from contamination. This honors the speech of Allah. As in Radd al-Muhtar.
(1) The statement: "From him...", Mentioned in Majma‘ al-Zawa’id.
Explanation: (1) In this noble hadith, it is elucidated that Hazrat Uthman (RA) ordered the compilation of the Quran according to the language of the Quraysh. Prior to this, as mentioned in the hadith narrated by Hazrat Zaid bin Thabit (RA), Hazrat Abu Bakr (RA) had ordered the compilation of the Quran. The difference between the compilations of these two noble companions is that Hazrat Abu Bakr (RA) compiled the Quran in such a way that no part of it would be lost due to the martyrdom of memorizers. In this first compilation, Hazrat Abu Bakr (RA) ensured that the language of the Quraysh, along with other dialects and readings, was included. However, when Islam spread beyond the Arabs to non-Arab lands and people began to dispute over the readings, even to the point of rejecting each other's recitations, Hazrat Uthman (RA) ordered the compilation of the Quran according to the language of the Quraysh alone, as the Quran was revealed in their language. He sent copies of this version to all Islamic territories to eliminate disputes. Since then, the Uthmanic codex has been the standard for the written Quran throughout the Islamic world. This topic is found in Al-Mirqat. 12
Explanation: (2) Our Hanafi jurists (May Allah have mercy on them) have stated that if the blessed pages of the Quran, which bear the names of Allah and His Messenger, are no longer usable and have become fragmented, they should be wrapped in clean cloth and buried in a place far from human traffic to prevent any disrespect. Burning the Quran is prohibited. If, for some reason, it is burned, its ashes should be protected. (Al-‘Umda al-Qari, Radd al-Muhtar) 12
The reason for saying Bismillah between Surah Anfal and Surah Bara'ah:
Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) reported: "I asked Uthman: 'What made you combine al-Anfal (which is among the mathani) with Bara'ah (which is among the mi'in) without writing 'Bismillah' between them, and include them among the seven long surahs?' Uthman replied: 'Sometimes long surahs would be revealed to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). When something was revealed, he would call his scribes and say: "Put these verses in the surah that mentions such-and-such." Al-Anfal was among the first revealed in Medina, while Bara'ah was among the last of the Qur'an. Their themes were similar, and the Messenger (ﷺ) passed away without clarifying if they were one surah. Therefore, I joined them without writing 'Bismillah' between them and placed them among the seven long surahs.'" [Ahmad, Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud]
The Division of the Surahs of the Glorious Quran: It is clear that the surahs of the Glorious Quran have been divided as follows: from Surah Al-Baqarah to Surah At-Tawbah, they are called Saba' al-Tiwal, meaning the seven long surahs. From Surah Yunus to Surah Al-Furqan, the surahs are called Midda, which are those with more than one hundred verses. From Surah Ash-Shu'ara to Surah An-Najm, the surahs are called Mathani, which have fewer verses and contain many stories. From Surah Al-Hujurat to the end of the Quran, the surahs are called Mufassal, as the Bismillah is nearly always found at the beginning of each surah. The Mufassal are further divided into three categories: the first is Tiwal Mufassal, the second is Awsat Mufassal, and the third is Qisar Mufassal. From Surah Al-Hujurat to Surah Al-Inshiqaq, they are Tiwal Mufassal, which are longer among the Mufassal. From Surah At-Tariq to Surah Al-Buruj, they are Awsat Mufassal, which are medium-length among the Mufassal. From Surah Al-Mutaffifin to the end of the Quran, they are Qisar Mufassal, which are shorter among the Mufassal. The Bismillah was revealed between the surahs and is not a part of any surah.
Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) reported: "The Prophet (ﷺ) would not know the end of a surah until 'Bismillah ar-Rahman ar-Raheem' was revealed. When it was revealed, he would know that the surah had ended and a new one had begun." [Al-Bazzar with two chains, one of which has authentic narrators]
(1) The statement: "He would not recognize the end of a surah until 'Bismillah...' was revealed..." - Scholars have differed over this matter with nine opinions. Al-Shafi'i held it is an ayah of Surah al-Fatihah and every surah. Early Shafi'i scholars said it's not part of the Qur'an but was revealed to separate surahs. Later Hanafi scholars said it's part of the Qur'an revealed for separation but not part of any surah. They ruled that omitting Basmalah once during complete Qur'an recitation in Taraweeh doesn't invalidate the Sunnah - this being the most correct view as verified by Al-Taftazani in his marginalia on Al-Kashshaf and Al-Zayla'i in Nasb al-Rayah [Al-Sa'ayah].
In Al-Binayah: The discussion on Basmalah has three aspects:
Whether it's part of the Qur'an
Whether it's part of al-Fatihah
Whether it's part of every surah
For the first: The correct Hanafi view is that it's part of the Qur'an because the ummah agrees anything written between the covers by revelation is Qur'an - and Basmalah is written thus. Al-Mu'alla narrated from Muhammad: "I asked Muhammad: 'Is Basmalah a Qur'anic verse?' He replied: 'Everything between the two covers is Qur'an.'" Similarly Al-Jassas reported Muhammad said: "Basmalah is part of the Qur'an revealed to separate surahs, recited initially for blessing but not part of any surah." Based on this, the recitation obligation is fulfilled by Basmalah according to Abu Hanifah when recited with intent of recitation not praise, since it's a Qur'anic verse.
Some of our scholars disagreed because there's doubt whether it's a complete verse, as Al-Awza'i said: "Allah only revealed 'Bismillah...' in Surah an-Nahl (16:98), and it's not a complete verse - the complete verse is "Indeed, it is from Solomon, and indeed, it is: 'In the name of Allah...'" (27:30)." Thus since there's doubt about it being a complete verse, it can't be relied upon, and it's prohibited for those in major impurity to recite it as Qur'an. According to Al-Karkhi's view, even less than a verse is prohibited for them, and similarly in At-Tahawi's narration due to possibility of it being a complete verse, so it's prohibited as precaution.
In 'Umdat al-Qari': At-Tahawi said: "The Prophet's (ﷺ) not reciting Basmalah aloud proves it's not part of the Qur'an, because Qur'an must be recited aloud. The Basmalah in an-Naml (27:30) must be recited aloud like other Qur'an, but it's established to recite it quietly like seeking refuge and opening supplications. Since we see it written at surah beginnings in the mus'haf but it's not part of non-Fatihah surahs, this proves it's not part of al-Fatihah either."
For the second and third aspects: Our view and the majority's is that it's not part of any surah - neither al-Fatihah nor others. Ash-Shafi'i held it's definitely part of al-Fatihah and famously held it's part of every surah [Al-Sa'ayah]. If one argues: "Had it not been part of every surah, why did the Prophet (ﷺ) recite it with al-Kawthar?" We reply: This doesn't prove it's part of every surah, only that it's an independent verse. Evidence includes the revelation's beginning when the angel said: "Read in the name of your Lord..." (96:1) - had Basmalah been part of every surah's beginning, he would have said: "Read 'Bismillah... Read in the name of your Lord...'" Also, the Prophet (ﷺ) said: "A surah of thirty verses interceded..." (referring to al-Mulk without Basmalah) [Narrated by at-Tirmidhi as hasan, and others] - had Basmalah been part of it, he would have mentioned it Umdat al-Qari.

Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: "A surah of the Qur’an containing thirty verses interceded for a man until he was forgiven. It is Blessed is He in whose hand is the dominion [67:1]." At-Tirmidhi narrated it and said: "This hadith is hasan." It was also narrated by Ahmad in his Musnad, Ibn Hibban in his Sahih, Al-Hakim in his Mustadrak (who authenticated it), and At-Tabarani in Al-Kabir with a sound chain.
(2) The statement: "It is Blessed is He...", The evidence from this is that this surah consists of thirty verses excluding the Basmalah, without dispute among those who count the verses. Additionally, its opening with Blessed is He... proves the Basmalah is not part of it (Al-Binayah)

Abu Sa‘id ibn al-Mu‘alla (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated in a lengthy hadith: I said to him (the Prophet)"Did you not say, 'I will teach you the greatest surah in the Qur’an'?" He said: "[All] praise is [due] to Allah, Lord of the worlds [1:2]. It is the seven oft-repeated verses and the Great Qur’an which I have been given" [Narrated by Bukhari]
(1) The statement: "He said: Alhamdulillahi Rabbil-‘alamin", This clearly indicates the Basmalah is not part of the surah, as he began with Alhamdulillah... (Ta‘liq I‘la as-Sunan)
(2) The statement: "It is the seven oft-repeated verses", If the Basmalah were an ayah of it, they would be eight, since they are seven without it (Al-Binayah)

Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated in a lengthy hadith: I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: "Allah the Exalted said: 'I have divided the prayer between Myself and My servant into two halves...'" [until the end of Surah Al-Fatihah] [Narrated by Muslim]
(3) The statement: "The servant says: Alhamdulillahi Rabbil-‘alamin", Ibn ‘Abd al-Barr said: This hadith resolves the confusion about the omission of the Basmalah from Al-Fatihah. It is an explicit text that cannot be interpreted otherwise. The evidence is that Allah began the division with Alhamdulillah... without the Basmalah. Had it been part of the surah, He would have started with it. Moreover, making Iyyaka na‘budu the midpoint results in three verses for Allah’s praise, three for the servant, and one between them. Including the Basmalah would invalidate this division. Also, the Prophet (ﷺ) said the servant recites Ihdina as-sirat al-mustaqim to the end, then said: "These are for My servant", narrated by Abu Dawud and An-Nasa’i with sound chains. This implies three verses, whereas according to Ash-Shafi‘i’s view (counting the Basmalah), it would be two, making four and a half for Allah, contradicting the hadith’s explicit "half." Here"prayer" means recitation (Al-Binayah)
Furthermore, Imam Ibn Abd al-Barr (RA) has stated that this hadith of the opening (al-Sadr) indicates that 'Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim' is not part of Surah al-Fatiha, and there is no other hadith in my knowledge that explicitly commands this and leaves no room for interpretation. He says that in this sacred hadith, Allah Almighty has divided Surah al-Fatiha for the acquisition of sustenance and provision, and its beginning is from 'Alhamdulillah Rabb al-Alamin.' If 'Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim' were considered part of Surah al-Fatiha, it would mean that Allah Almighty has designated 'Iyyaka na'budu wa iyyaka nasta'in' as the middle part, and the first three verses are in praise and glorification of Allah. This could be possible only if 'Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim' is not considered part of Surah al-Fatiha. If it were, the division mentioned in the sacred hadith would be invalid, as the verses of Surah al-Fatiha would then total eight.
Imam Ibn Abd al-Barr (RA) presents an interpretative argument that Abu Dawud and al-Nasa'i have narrated this hadith with some other chains, in which Allah Almighty says, 'It is I who am present,' and this is used for situations involving fewer than three people. This confirms that the division of Surah al-Fatiha, according to the sacred hadith, consists of seven verses: from 'Alhamdulillah Rabb al-Alamin' to 'Malik Yawm ad-Din' are the first three verses, and from 'Ihdina as-Sirat al-Mustaqim' to 'Wa la ad-dalina' are the last three verses.
Thus, the total of seven verses is complete, excluding the verse 'Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim.' Any other division would contradict the explicit statement of the sacred hadith. Additionally, the hadith...
‘A’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated in the hadith about the beginning of revelation: Then he sent me (Jibril) and said: "Recite in the name of your Lord who created, Created man from a clinging substance..." [96:1-5] [Narrated by Bukhari]

‘Imran ibn Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that he passed by a reciter who would recite then beg. He said"Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji‘un," then said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: "Whoever recites the Qur’an, let him ask Allah by it. For there will come people who recite the Qur’an to beg from others" [Narrated by Ahmad and At-Tirmidhi]
(1) The statement: "Then beg", In Al-Bahr: Some scholars disliked giving charity to those who recite the Qur’an in markets as a deterrent.

Whoever reads the Qur'an to acquire wealth, on the Day of Resurrection, his face will be devoid of luster. (There will be great disgrace, and he will be greatly disgraced). This hadith has been narrated in Sahih Muslim.
