The Fast of a Traveler
Volume 4 · Fasting

Most scholars agree that during travel, both breaking the fast and keeping the fast are permissible, whether the journey is for comfort or hardship. However, if there is no hardship during the journey, it is better to keep the fast, and if there is hardship, it is better to break the fast. According to the legal definition of travel, one becomes a traveler when they leave their place with the intention of traveling three stages (which is approximately 48 miles or 97 kilometers). Upon reaching the destination, if one intends to stay for fifteen days or more, they are no longer considered a traveler. If the intended stay is less than fifteen days, they remain a traveler. Therefore, a person who is legally a traveler has the option to either keep or break the fast, but it is preferable to keep the fast unless there is a valid reason not to. If a traveler does not keep the fast during Ramadan, they must make up the missed days later. If a traveler did not intend to fast on that day, it is better for them not to fast. If they intended to fast and are not experiencing severe hardship, breaking the fast is not permissible. If a traveler breaks their fast, they must make up the missed day, but no expiation (kaffarah) is required. (Extracted from: Mirqat and Ashbah al-Lam'at and Fath al-Qadir)

Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated: Hamzah ibn Amr Al-Aslami asked the Prophet (ﷺ), “Should I fast while traveling?” He was a frequent faster. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “If you wish, fast, and if you wish, do not fast.” (1) [Agreed upon]

(1) The statement: “If you wish, fast…” Al-Tahawi said: “This shows that the Prophet (ﷺ) permitted fasting while traveling for those who wished to do so and not fasting for those who wished not to. This confirms that fasting Ramadan while traveling is permissible.”

2920

Abu Sa’id Al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: “We traveled with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) on the sixteenth of Ramadan. Some of us fasted, (2) and some did not. Those who fasted did not criticize those who did not, and those who did not fast did not criticize those who did.” [Narrated by Muslim]

(2) The statement: “Some of us fasted...” Al-Tahawi said: “This indicates that the Prophet’s (ﷺ) breaking of the fast and his command to his companions to do so was not a prohibition of fasting while traveling but a permission to break the fast.”

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: “We were traveling with the Prophet (ﷺ). Some of us were fasting, and some were not. We stopped at a place on a hot day. Those who were fasting fell down, while those who were not fasting set up the tents and watered the animals. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, ‘Today, those who broke their fast took the reward.’” (3) [Agreed upon]

(3) The statement: “Those who broke their fast took the reward.” This means they received the greater reward because breaking the fast was better for them at that time. The mention of “today” indicates that this ruling is not absolute. This is mentioned in Al-Mirqat.

Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: “The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) left Madinah for Makkah and fasted (4) until he reached Usfan. Then he asked for water, raised it to his hand so the people could see, and broke his fast until he arrived in Makkah. This was during Ramadan. Ibn Abbas would say, ‘The Prophet (ﷺ) fasted and broke his fast, so whoever wishes may fast, and whoever wishes may break their fast.’” [Agreed upon]

In a narration by Muslim from Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him), he drank after Asr. Abu Dawud mentioned in his Sunan that Abu Sa’id said: (5) “I saw myself fasting with the Prophet (ﷺ) before and after that.”

In a narration by our Imam Abu Hanifah from Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: “The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) left Madinah for Makkah on the second night of Ramadan. He fasted until he reached Qudaid, where the people complained to him about the difficulty, so he broke his fast and continued to do so until he arrived in Makkah.” Ibn Abi Shaybah and Muslim narrated from Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him), and Al-Tahawi narrated from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) and Abu Sa’id something similar.

(4) The statement: “He fasted...” In ‘Umdat al-Qari, it is said: “This clearly indicates that fasting while traveling is permissible, and it refutes those who do not permit it. It also shows the permissibility of breaking the fast while traveling.” In Fath al-Qadir: “Know that breaking the fast is permissible for a traveler if they did not intend to fast. If they intended to fast at night and woke up without breaking their resolve before dawn, they are fasting, and it is not permissible to break the fast on that day. However, if they break it, there is no expiation because the reason permitting it (travel) is present, creating doubt, which removes the expiation. This is mentioned in Al-Mirqat and Sharh al-Niqayah.”

(5) The statement: “Abu Sa’id said...” This means he fasted with the Prophet (ﷺ) while traveling after that. This hadith indicates that fasting while traveling after the Prophet’s (ﷺ) breaking of the fast mentioned in these narrations is permissible. Al-Tahawi said this.

2923

In another narration from Jaber (RA) via Tirmidhi, it is reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ drank water after the Asr prayer during this journey.
2924

2925

It is narrated from our Imam Abu Hanifah (RA) that in one narration, Anas bin Malik (RA) said:

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ set out from Medina on the second day of Ramadan for the Ka'bah in Makkah while fasting. He reached Qadeed (a place between Makkah and Medina where the road ascends) and the Companions complained to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about the intense heat. Thereupon, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ broke his fast and did not fast until he reached Makkah.

2926

And Ibn Abi Shaybah and Muslim narrated from Jaber (RA) that he said,
2927

Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “Allah Almighty intended ease for you (1) in breaking the fast while traveling. So whoever finds fasting easy may fast, and whoever finds breaking the fast easy may do so.” [Narrated by Al-Tahawi]

(1) The statement: “Ease for you...” Ibn Abbas did not consider the Prophet’s (ﷺ) breaking of the fast while traveling as abrogating fasting during travel but as a means of ease. This is mentioned in Sharh Ma’ani al-Athar.

2928

Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “Allah Almighty intended ease for you (1) in breaking the fast while traveling. So whoever finds fasting easy may fast, and whoever finds breaking the fast easy may do so.” [Narrated by Al-Tahawi]

(1) The statement: “Ease for you...” Ibn Abbas did not consider the Prophet’s (ﷺ) breaking of the fast while traveling as abrogating fasting during travel but as a means of ease. This is mentioned in Sharh Ma’ani al-Athar.

2929

Anas ibn Malik Al-Ka’bi (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Allah has reduced (2) half the prayer and the fast for the traveler, as well as for the nursing and pregnant woman.” [Narrated by Abu Dawud, Al-Tirmidhi, Al-Nasa’i, and Ibn Majah]

(2) The statement: “Allah has reduced...” If someone asks, “Since fasting is reduced for the traveler, if they fast, it is not obligatory, so it does not count,” the response is: “It is possible that the fasting reduced for them is the fasting they cannot avoid during those days, just as the resident cannot avoid it. This hadith indicates this meaning. Do you not see that it mentions the pregnant and nursing woman? If they fast Ramadan, it counts for them, and they are not like those who fast before the obligation of fasting. Rather, fasting becomes obligatory for them at the beginning of the month, but they are allowed to delay it due to necessity. The traveler is like them. This is the best way to understand this narration to avoid contradicting other narrations mentioned in this chapter.” This is summarized from Sharh Ma’ani al-Athar. In Al-Mirqat, Ibn Hajar said: “This is evidence for Al-Shafi’i’s view that shortening the prayer is permissible, not obligatory. We say: This is not correct, as shortening the prayer is obligatory according to us, and the evidence for our view is clear, including the hadith of Aisha in the two Sahih collections: ‘The prayer was initially prescribed as two rak’ahs, and the prayer of the traveler remained as such, while the prayer of the resident was increased.’ The meaning of ‘reduced’ is that it was initially lifted for the traveler.”

2930

Ibn Abi Awfa (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: “We were traveling (1) with the Prophet (ﷺ) when he said to a man, ‘Dismount and prepare a drink for me.’ The man said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, the sun is still up.’ The Prophet (ﷺ) repeated, ‘Dismount and prepare a drink for me.’ The man said again, ‘O Messenger of Allah, the sun is still up.’ The Prophet (ﷺ) said, ‘Dismount and prepare a drink for me.’ The man dismounted, prepared the drink, and the Prophet (ﷺ) drank it. Then he pointed with his hand and said, ‘When you see the night approaching from here, the fasting person may break their fast.’” [Narrated by Al-Bukhari]

(1) The statement: “We were traveling...” This and what follows confirm that fasting while traveling during Ramadan is better than breaking the fast. This is supported by the fact that the Prophet (ﷺ) and many of his companions fasted during Ramadan while traveling for the conquest of Makkah, as narrated by Al-Bukhari. If breaking the fast were absolutely better, this would not have happened. This is mentioned in ‘Umdat al-Qari and ‘Umdat al-Wiqayah. It is understood from these hadiths that if a traveler is not harmed by fasting, fasting is better, but if they break the fast, it is permissible. This is mentioned in Al-Hidayah. Al-Isbijabi said in Sharh Mukhtasar al-Tahawi: “It is better to fast while traveling if fasting does not weaken the person. If fasting weakens them and causes hardship, breaking the fast is better. If they break the fast without hardship, they are not sinful.” This is mentioned in ‘Umdat al-Qari.

The hadith in the two Sahih collections: “The Prophet (ﷺ) was traveling and saw a crowd and a man shaded. He asked, ‘What is this?’ They said, ‘He is fasting.’ The Prophet (ﷺ) said, ‘It is not righteousness to fast while traveling.’” Similarly, Muslim narrated from Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him): “The Prophet (ﷺ) traveled to Makkah during Ramadan in the year of the conquest until he reached Kuray’ al-Ghamim. The people fasted, and he called for a cup of water and drank it. It was said, ‘Some people are fasting.’ He said, ‘They are disobedient.’” Similarly, Ibn Majah narrated from Abdurrahman ibn Awf that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Fasting Ramadan while traveling is like breaking the fast while resident.” This is understood to mean that they were harmed by fasting, causing weakness or illness, as indicated by the context. The general ruling is not based on the specific reason, but it is interpreted this way to reconcile the hadiths, as they clearly permit fasting while traveling. This is summarized in Fath al-Qadir.

2931

Abu Al-Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: “We traveled with the Prophet (ﷺ) on one of his journeys on a hot day. The heat was so intense that a man would place his hand on his head. None of us were fasting except the Prophet (ﷺ) and Ibn Rawahah.” [Narrated by Al-Bukhari]

2932

It is narrated from 'A'sim Ahwal (may Allah have mercy on him) that he said: I asked 'Asim ibn Ma'qil (RA) about keeping the fasts of Ramadan while traveling, and he said:

(For the traveler,) it is better to break the fast and keep the fast of Ramadan.

2933

2934

Sa’id ibn Jubayr said: “Fasting is better, and breaking the fast is a concession, meaning while traveling.” [Narrated by Al-Tahawi]

2935

Yahya bin Abi Kathir (may Allah have mercy on him) reported: 'Qasim bin Muhammad (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated to me about Imam al-Muminin Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that he used to fast during the heat in Ramadan. I asked Qasim bin Muhammad (may Allah have mercy on him) why Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) used to fast during the heat in Ramadan.'

Qasim bin Muhammad (may Allah have mercy on him) replied, 'He did not delay fasting until the time of the prayer call, but rather, he would hasten to fast in Ramadan. This is narrated by Imam Tahawi.'

2936
