The Adhan Before Dawn
Volume 2 · Prayer

F: Regarding what has been narrated about Ibn Majah, may Allah have mercy on him, this section is a supplement to those matters. It discusses the prohibition of giving the Fajr adhan before the true dawn.

1050

It is narrated from Bilaal (RA) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

Do not give the call to prayer until the light of dawn appears like this, and he ﷺ extended his blessed hand towards the sky.

1051

It is narrated from Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said to him: "Do not call the Adhan until the dawn becomes clear to you like this," (1) and he spread his hands horizontally. [Narrated by Abu Dawud, who did not weaken it and Al-Bayhaqi also narrated something similar]

In Al-Imam, it is said: "The narrators of its chain are trustworthy." In the narration of 'Abdul-'Aziz ibn Abi Rawad from Ibn 'Umar, it is mentioned that Bilal called the Adhan before Fajr, and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) became angry.

(1) Explanation of the statement: "Do not call the Adhan until the dawn becomes clear to you like this": This means that the Adhan should not be called before the time for prayer has entered, and it should be repeated at the correct time. This is because the Adhan is for informing people, and calling it before the time is misleading. Abu Yusuf and Imam Shafi'i held the opinion that it is permissible to call the Adhan for Fajr in the latter half of the night, based on the practice of the people of the Two Holy Mosques. However, the evidence against this is this hadith. As mentioned in Al-Hidayah: "If it is said that the hadith states, 'Do not be deceived by Bilal's Adhan,' and it is understood that he used to call the Adhan before the time, we respond that this is evidence for us, as the Prophet (peace be upon him) did not consider his Adhan valid and instructed people not to rely on it like they would rely on the Adhan called at the correct time. He said, 'Do not be deceived by Bilal's Adhan, for he calls it to wake up those who are praying at night, to allow those fasting to eat their pre-dawn meal, and to wake up those who are sleeping. So eat and drink until Ibn Umm Maktum calls the Adhan.' Ibn Umm Maktum was blind and would not call the Adhan until he heard people saying, 'It has become morning.'"

It is narrated from Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said to him: "What made you do that?" He replied, "I woke up while I was drowsy and thought that dawn had broken." The Prophet (peace be upon him) then instructed him to announce: "Indeed, the servant has slept." [Narrated by Al-Bayhaqi, and Abu Dawud narrated something similar]

1053

It is narrated from Malik ibn Al-Huwayrith (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said to us: "Pray as you have seen me pray, and when the time for prayer comes, let one of you call the Adhan, and let the eldest among you lead the prayer." [Agreed upon]

1054

It is narrated from Burayd ibn Abi Maryam, from his father (may Allah be pleased with him), that he said: We were traveling with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and journeyed through the night. When dawn approached, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) dismounted and slept, and the people also slept. They did not wake up until the sun had risen. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) ordered the Mu'adhdhin to call the Adhan, (2) then he prayed the two Rak'ahs before Fajr. After that, he ordered the Iqamah to be called and led the people in prayer. Then he told us about what would happen until the Hour is established. [Narrated by Al-Nasa’i, and Abu Dawud, Al-Hakim, Al-Bazzar, At-Tabarani, and Al-Bayhaqi narrated something similar.

(2) Explanation of the statement: "He called the Adhan, then prayed...": In Al-Hidayah, it is said: "The Adhan and Iqamah are called for a missed prayer because the Prophet (peace be upon him) made up for the Fajr prayer after the night of delay with both the Adhan and Iqamah. This is evidence against Imam Shafi'i, who considered the Iqamah sufficient." In Al-'Inayah, it is said: "It cannot be said that it is narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) ordered Bilal to call only the Iqamah without mentioning the Adhan, because the incident is the same, and acting upon the additional narration is preferable. However, this is debatable because that is only valid if the narrators are the same, which is not confirmed here. The response is that when narrators are multiple, the two narrations are acted upon only if it is possible to reconcile them, which is not possible here because the incident is the same."

It is narrated from Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "When the Iqamah is called, do not stand until you see me come out." This is agreed upon (by Al-Bukhari and Muslim] In An-Nakhirah, it is said: "If the Imam is outside the mosque, when he enters from behind the rows, the people stand as soon as they see him. In Ad-Durr Al-Mukhtar, it is stated: 'If he enters from the front, they stand when their eyes fall upon him.'"

1056

Abu Buraydah (RA) narrates from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

When the Iqamah is called, walk to the prayer calmly and do not hasten. Come with composure and tranquility. If the prayer has already begun, join it, and if you miss part of it, complete what remains.

1057

It is narrated from Abu Dharr (RA) through Ibn Abi Shaybah in his Sunan:
1058

Ibn Hazm has narrated it in some Sunan from Abu Hurairah (RA) that
1059

It is narrated from Mu'adh bin Jabal (RA) by at-Tirmidhi in his reliable Sunan:
1060

And in a version of Muslim, it is narrated that when a person intends to pray,

he is in the state of prayer at that time. Imam Muhammad (may Allah have mercy on him) said: When you do not find a row and cannot stand in a row, do not hasten to bow or say the takbir tahrima to join the congregation.

This hadith states: 'When the prayer is established, do not come to it running.' (When the call for prayer has been made, do not run to it.) Rather, walk calmly and with composure, as this is more appropriate and commendable. This is further supported by the hadith of Ibn Umar (RA) that follows, which establishes that one should come to the congregation without exertion and quickly - (Amir's commentary).

The hadith also includes: 'So whatever you have caught up with, pray it, and whatever you have missed, make it up.' (Whatever part of the prayer you join with the imam, pray it, and whatever part you missed, make it up.)

The details of this are as follows: If someone joins the prayer after the imam has started but before the imam has completed the obligatory parts, such a person is called a 'masbuq' (one who has joined late). The hadith uses different phrases regarding such people:

1. 'And whatever you have missed, make it up.' (Make up the part of the prayer you missed with the imam.)

2. 'And whatever you have missed, complete it.' (Complete the part of the prayer you missed with the imam.)

In the first phrase, the word 'make it up' (fa-qdoo) is used, while in the second, the word 'complete it' (fa-tamoo) is used. There is a difference of opinion among scholars about whether these two terms mean the same thing or if they have distinct meanings.

Based on this difference, there is a debate about when a masbuq's prayer begins and ends. One view is that the masbuq's prayer starts from the point where he joins the imam, so his prayer is considered to have begun at that point. Therefore, the initial part of the prayer is not missed, and he completes the remaining part of the prayer after the imam finishes. The part of the prayer he performs after the imam's salutation is considered the final part of his prayer. This is the view of Imam Shafi'i, Imam Is-haq, and Imam Awza'i (may Allah have mercy on them). It is also reported from Imam Malik and Imam Ahmad (may Allah have mercy on them) in one tradition, and they argue based on the phrase 'fa-tamoo' that the masbuq's prayer is a continuation of what was already started.

The other view is that the masbuq's prayer, from the point he joins, is considered the final part of his prayer, similar to the final part of the imam's prayer. After the imam finishes, the masbuq makes up the missed initial part of the prayer. Thus, the part he performs after the imam's salutation is considered the initial part of his prayer, which he is making up. This is the view of Imam Abu Hanifa (may Allah have mercy on him) and is also reported from Imam Ahmad (may Allah have mercy on him) in one tradition. This view is also supported by Sufyan, Mujahid, and Ibn Sirin (may Allah have mercy on them). Ibn Battaal stated that Imam Abu Hanifa's view is corroborated by the reports of Ibn Mas'ud, Ibn Umar, Ibrahim Nakhai, Tha'labi, and Abu Qilaba (may Allah be pleased with them). Those who support the second view argue based on the phrase 'fa-fadoo' (make up) and Imam Shafi'i and his companions argue based on 'fa-tamoo' (complete).

The response to this is that the follower's prayer is inseparable from the imam's prayer and must follow it. Therefore, the final part of the imam's prayer must also be the final part of the masbuq's prayer; otherwise, it would contradict the principle of following the imam. Thus, the prophetic guidance 'fa-tamoo' can be interpreted as 'fa-fadoo' (make up) in the sense that whoever makes up the missed part of the prayer has completed it, meaning he has perfected it. The reason is that if any part of the prayer is missed, the prayer is deficient, and the person completes this deficiency by performing the remaining part of the prayer after the imam finishes.

Consider this example: A person joins the noon prayer congregation with the imam during the last two rak'ahs. According to Imam Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him), he has performed the final two rak'ahs with the imam, and the first two rak'ahs will be made up after the imam's salutation, thus completing his prayer. In this case, he will recite only Surah Al-Fatiha in both rak'ahs, without adding another surah. Conversely, according to Imam Abu Hanifa (may Allah have mercy on him), the two rak'ahs he performs with the imam are considered the final two rak'ahs, and he will make up the missed initial two rak'ahs after the imam's salutation. Since he is making up the missed rak'ahs, he will not add another surah to Surah Al-Fatiha in both rak'ahs. When the Prophet (peace be upon him) said 'fa-qdoo,' this is the detailed explanation.

It is narrated from Nafi' that Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) heard the Iqamah while he was in Al-Baqi', so he walked quickly. [Narrated by Muhammad from Malik, who said: "There is no harm in this as long as he does not exhaust himself”]
