The Mention of Yemen and Syria, and of Uways al-Qarani
Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “A man will come to you from Yemen, called Uwais. He will leave behind in Yemen only his mother. 1 He had a white patch (leprosy), so he supplicated to Allah, and it was removed except for a spot the size of a dinar or dirham. Whoever among you meets him, let him seek forgiveness for you.” 2 In another narration, he said: “I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: ‘The best of the followers (Tabi‘in) is a man called Uwais, who has a mother and had a white patch. Tell him to seek forgiveness for you.’” [Narrated by Muslim]
Notes /
1 His statement: “He will leave behind in Yemen only his mother”: This means he has no family or dependents in Yemen except her, and he is prevented from coming to us due to serving her. His statement: “white patch” refers to leprosy. His statement: “a spot the size of a dinar or dirham” reflects the narrator’s uncertainty, possibly leaving it as a mark or to cause aversion, which is why he preferred obscurity and seclusion, disliking fame and mingling. His statement: “The best of the followers is a man called Uwais” indicates, as Nawawi said, that he is the best of the followers. His statement: “he had a white patch” means Allah removed it except for a small portion. This is a clear miracle. His statement: “Tell him” means seek him out. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
2 His statement: “Let him seek forgiveness for you”: Ibn al-Malak said: Allah commanded his companions to seek Uwais’s supplication for forgiveness, even though the companions are superior to the followers, to show that it is recommended for the superior to seek prayers from the less superior, or to comfort Uwais’s heart. Since he could have reached the Prophet’s presence but was prevented by his devotion to his mother, the Prophet ordered this for him to dispel any notion that he was at fault for staying behind. This does not contradict reports that he left his mother and met the companions, as his initial reluctance was due to the lack of someone to care for her. When he found the means, he visited the companions, or when the obligation of Hajj was mandated, he was compelled to come, or his mother permitted him to travel for Allah’s cause. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated from Zaid ibn Thabit that the Prophet (ﷺ) looked toward Yemen and said: “O Allah, turn 1 their hearts toward us and bless us in our sa‘ and mudd.” [Narrated by At-Tirmidhi]
Notes /
1 His statement: “O Allah, turn”: This is a command for turning. The “ba” in “their hearts” is for causation, meaning make their hearts inclined toward us. He supplicated for this because the food of the people of Madinah came from Yemen, hence he followed it with a blessing for the sa‘ and mudd for the food brought from Yemen. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “The people of Yemen have come to you. They are the most tender-hearted 1 and softest of hearts. Faith is Yemeni, and wisdom is Yemeni. Pride and arrogance are found among the owners of camels, while tranquility and dignity are found among the people of sheep.” 2 [Agreed Upon]
Notes /
1 His statement: “most tender-hearted and softest of hearts”: The Qadi said: This is the opposite of harshness, and softness contrasts with hardness. These terms are metaphorically used for the heart’s states. If the heart turns away from truth, rejects it, and is unaffected by verses and warnings, it is described as harsh, as truth does not penetrate it, and its core is hard, unmoved by admonition. Conversely, if it is the opposite, it is described as tender and soft, with a thin veil that does not resist the penetration of truth, and its essence is soft, affected by advice. After describing them thus, he followed with the result, saying: “Faith is Yemeni, and wisdom is Yemeni,” as a pure, tender, and soft heart leads to recognizing and affirming the truth, which is faith, and to submission to its demands and vigilance in actions, which is wisdom. Thus, their hearts are mines of faith and springs of wisdom, originating from Yemen. Faith and wisdom are attributed to Yemen to honor and elevate them. The intent is to favor the people of Yemen over others from the East. This is supported by his statement: “The people of Yemen have come to you,” followed by “Faith is Yemeni,” which does not negate its Hijazi origin but indicates the people of Yemen’s readiness to accept it, its prevalence among them, and their steadfastness in it. They were the ones who, through their support, enabled the conquest of Sham and Iraq during Umar ibn al-Khattab’s time. His statement: “wisdom is Yemeni” may refer to jurisprudence in religion or any righteous word that prevents its speaker from ruin. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
2 His statement: “Pride and arrogance are found among the owners of camels, while tranquility and dignity are found among the people of sheep”: The Qadi said: Attributing arrogance to camel owners and dignity to sheep owners indicates that associating with animals affects the soul, imparting traits and manners suited to their nature. I say: This is why it is said that companionship influences the soul. This may also explain why every prophet tended sheep. The essence of the hadith is that the people of Yemen are characterized by faith and wisdom, camel owners by pride, and sheep owners by tranquility. Whoever seeks the company of people of faith and knowledge should associate with those like the people of Yemen in faith. Allah says: O you who believe, fear Allah and be with the truthful [At-Tawbah: 119]. This also hints at a miracle, as many saints appear in Yemen despite its small population, unlike other regions where, despite large populations, the righteous are few in proportion. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “The head of disbelief 1 is toward the East, and pride and arrogance are among the owners of horses and camels, 1 the noisy ones, 3 the people of tents. Tranquility is among the people of sheep.” [Agreed Upon]
Notes /
1 His statement: “The head of disbelief” means its majority, as Suyuti stated, or more likely, its origin. His statement: “toward the East” indicates that disbelief and trials, like the Dajjal, Gog and Magog, and others, will emerge from there. Ibn al-Malak said: This refers to the greater influence of Satan over the people of the East, which was true in his time and will be when the Dajjal emerges from the East, the source of great trials and disbelief. Suyuti, quoting Al-Baji, said it may refer to Persia or Najd. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
2 His statement: “Pride and arrogance are among the owners of horses”: Al-Raghib said: Arrogance is pride based on an imagined virtue one sees in oneself. It is said that no one rides a horse without feeling a sense of pride. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
3 His statement: “the noisy ones” refers to farmers, in conjunction with horse owners. His statement: “the people of tents” refers to camel hair tents, by way of substitution or clarification, meaning desert dwellers, as their homes are often tents made of hair. It is said that the Prophet (ﷺ) saw a dwelling and farming tools and said: “These do not enter a people’s home without bringing them humiliation.” How then can pride and arrogance be associated with humiliation? I say: Perhaps he foretold what would happen in the end times, where excessive farming leads to pride and arrogance, as seen among worldly people with vast farms among non-Arabs, who take precedence in gatherings over camel and horse owners, gaining great esteem among kings, some becoming ministers and leaders among their subjects. They are called “jagirdar” in our terminology. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
Abu Mas‘ud al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Trials come from there, toward the East, 1 and harshness and hardness of hearts are among the noisy people of tents, at the tails of camels and cattle, among Rabi‘ah and Mudar.” [Agreed Upon]
Notes /
1 His statement: “toward the East” is an adverbial phrase related to an omitted verb, meaning he said: “Trials come from there,” pointing toward the East, as At-Tibi stated. It is possible this was inserted by the narrator for clarification of “from there.” His statement: “harshness” likely refers to harsh speech, given the context of “hardness of hearts among the noisy people of tents,” which explains the noisy ones as Bedouins or desert dwellers. They are criticized due to their distance from cities and villages, which leads to less knowledge and refinement of manners and religious sciences. His statement: “at the tails of camels and cattle” means, as At-Tibi said, among the noisy ones who raise their voices while driving them, as drivers shout from behind. It is said: (فد الرجل يفد فديدا) when a man’s voice becomes louder. His statement: “among Rabi‘ah and Mudar” is either a predicate of an omitted subject, meaning this group is them, or a second predicate after “harshness.” At-Tibi said it is a substitute for “among the noisy ones” with the verb repeated. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “O Allah, bless us in our Sham; 1 O Allah, bless us in our Yemen.” They said: “O Messenger of Allah, and in our Najd?” He said: “O Allah, bless us in our Sham; O Allah, bless us in our Yemen.” They said: “O Messenger of Allah, and in our Najd?” I believe he said on the third time: “There are earthquakes and trials, and from there the horn of Satan will emerge.” [Agreed Upon]
Notes /
1 His statement: “O Allah, bless us in our Sham” may have been mentioned before Yemen to indicate that Sham is inherently blessed, as Allah says: Which We have blessed around it [Al-Isra: 1], and due to the presence of many prophets there. The intent is an increase in blessing or blessings specific to the people of Madinah and other believers. His statement: “O Allah, bless us in our Yemen” refers to both apparent and spiritual blessings, hence many saints are found there. The reason for specifying these two places with blessings is that the food of Madinah’s people came from them. His statement: “There” refers to the region of Najd, meaning toward the East, where physical or spiritual earthquakes occur, shaking hearts and causing unrest, along with trials and afflictions that weaken religion and piety, making it unsuitable for a supplication of blessing. His statement: “the horn of Satan will emerge” means Satan’s party, people of his time, and his allies will appear, as Suyuti stated. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

Zaid ibn Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Blessed is Sham.” We said: “Why is that, 1 O Messenger of Allah?” He said: “Because the angels of the Merciful spread their wings over it.” [Narrated by Ahmad and At-Tirmidhi]
Notes /
1 His statement: “Why is that” means for what reason, as in some versions of Mishkat. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
2 His statement: “Because the angels of the Merciful” implies the angels of mercy, spreading their wings over Sham and its people to protect them from disbelief. (As stated in Al-Mirqat) In Al-Lama’at, it is said: His statement: “spreading their wings over it” confirms wings for angels in the Qur’an and Sunnah. They said: These are not like birds’ wings but refer to the angels’ attributes and powers, known only through observation. A bird does not have three or four wings, let alone six hundred. In short, wings must be affirmed for angels, but their nature is not questioned.

Abdullah ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “A fire will emerge from Hadramaut 1 or near Hadramaut, gathering people.” We said: “O Messenger of Allah, what do you command us?” He said: “Go to Sham.” [Narrated by At-Tirmidhi]
Notes /
1 His statement: “A fire from Hadramaut” may refer to a literal fire, as Torbushti said, or a trial metaphorically called fire. In either case, it will occur before the Hour. They asked: “What do you command us?” meaning to avoid it, and he said: “Go to Sham.” His statement: “gathering people” means the fire will collect and drive them, as stated in An-Nihayah. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated that he heard the Prophet (ﷺ) say: “There 1 will be a migration after a migration. The best of people will go to the place of Ibrahim’s migration.” In another narration: “The best of the people of the earth will go to the place of Ibrahim’s migration, while the worst of its people will remain on earth. The earth will expel them, and Allah’s soul will despise them. The fire will gather them with apes and pigs, staying with them at night and resting with them during the day.” [Narrated by Abu Dawud]
Notes /
1 His statement: “There” refers to the matter. His statement: “migration after migration” means a migration to Sham after the migration to Madinah. Torbushti said: This will happen when trials increase, and those upholding Allah’s command dwindle in other lands, and disbelievers conquer Muslim lands. Sham will remain under Islamic armies, victorious over their enemies, upholding the truth until they fight the Dajjal. Those migrating to it will preserve their religion, seeking it for their hereafter, increasing the number of Allah’s righteous servants. This may refer to our era. His statement: “The best of people” clarifies the general statement, as if saying: People will leave their homelands, and the best will migrate to Ibrahim’s migration place, which is Sham, as Ibrahim went there from Iraq. His statement: “The worst of its people remain” means the disbelievers and evildoers. “The earth will expel them” means their lands will cast them out from one place to another. His statement: “Allah’s soul will despise them” means Allah’s essence detests them. His statement: “The fire will gather them with apes and pigs” means the fire will accompany them day and night, gathering them with disbelievers likened to apes and pigs due to their actions. His statement: “staying with them” refers to the fire or trial resulting from their evil deeds, accompanying them wherever they go, as they think trials are confined to their lands, so they abandon them, but the trial follows them. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
Ibn Hawalah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “The matter 1 will come to you being armies mobilized: an army in Sham, an army in Yemen, and an army in Iraq.” Ibn Hawalah said: “Choose for me, O Messenger of Allah, if I witness that.” He said: “Go to Sham, for it is Allah’s chosen land, to which He gathers His chosen servants. But if you refuse, go to your Yemen and drink from your water pools, for Allah has guaranteed Sham and its people 2 for me.” 3 [Narrated by Ahmad and Abu Dawud]
Notes /
1 His statement: “The matter” refers to Islam’s affair. “Armies” means its forces. “Mobilized” means gathered under Islam’s banner. “Choose for me” means select an army for me to join. “Chosen” means Allah’s selected land among all lands for residence in the end times. “He gathers His chosen servants” means Allah gathers His chosen ones to Sham. His statement: “If you refuse” means if you decline to go to Sham, then go to your Yemen and drink from your water pools. “Allah has guaranteed” means He has undertaken to preserve Sham and its people for my sake and honor in my nation. Torbushti said: His statement: “If you refuse” is a parenthetical remark between “Go to Sham” and “drink from your pools,” meaning stay in Sham and drink from your pools, but he permitted settling in Yemen, then returned to his initial point. He attributed Yemen to them as he addressed Arabs, and Yemen is part of Arab lands. His statement: “drink from your pools” means each should drink from their own pool to avoid disputes and trials. Tayyibi said: “If you refuse” is a rebuke, meaning Sham is Allah’s chosen land, so if you Arabs refuse what Allah chose and prefer your homelands, stay in Yemen and drink from its pools, as they are better than desert waters. Thus, Sham is the priMaryam (Mary) choice, and Yemen is for necessity. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
2 His statement: “For Allah has guaranteed Sham and its people for me” means, as Torbushti said, Allah ensured their protection from disbelievers’ harm and total destruction. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
3 His statement: “for me” means for my sake. Tayyibi said: It is not directly connected to “guaranteed” but to “on” or “with,” meaning Allah guaranteed Sham for my sake. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
Shurayh ibn Ubayd narrated that the people of Sham were mentioned 1 to Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), and it was said: “Curse them, O Commander of the Faithful.” He said: “No, I heard the Prophet (ﷺ) say: ‘The Abdal will be in Sham, forty men. Whenever one dies, Allah replaces him with another. Through them, rain is sent, victory is granted over enemies, and punishment is averted from the people of Sham.’” [Narrated by Ahmad]

A man from the companions 1 narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Sham will be opened for you. When you choose residences there, go to a city called Damascus, for it is the stronghold of Muslims against great battles, and its base is in a land called Ghutah.” [Narrated by Ahmad]
Notes /
1 His statement: “A man from the companions” means the companion’s anonymity does not harm, as all companions are trustworthy, and their narrations are authoritative by consensus. “Stronghold of Muslims” means their refuge during great battles. “Its base” refers to the city gathering people. “Ghutah” is the name of the orchards and waters near Damascus. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
