The Virtues of the Wives of the Prophet ﷺ
Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: “The best of its women are Maryam (Mary)am bint Imran and the best of its women is Khadijah bint Khuwaylid.” [Agreed Upon]
In another narration: Abu Kuraib said: And Waki pointed to the heavens and the earth.
Notes /
1 The statement “the best of its women”: Meaning the women of her time or her world. Al-Qurtubi said: The pronoun refers to something not explicitly mentioned but understood from the context and observation, meaning the world. It appears to me that the statement “the best of its women” is a predicate placed before the subject, with the pronoun referring to Maryam (Mary)am. It is as if he said: Maryam (Mary)am is the best of the women of her time. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
2 The statement “and Waki pointed to the heavens and the earth”: Waki, one of the narrators of this Hadith, pointing to the heavens and the earth indicates that they are the best among those above the earth and beneath the canopy of the heavens. This is a form of additional clarification. It does not hold that this is an interpretation of “the best of its women,” as referring the pronoun to the heavens is not sound, and they are two distinct entities while the pronoun refers to a single thing. The judge said: The pronoun was singular because it referred to the collective layers of the heavens and regions of the earth. At-Tibi said: It is possible that the pronoun refers to the heavens and the earth metaphorically, as representing the world, as in the verse: Indeed, nothing is hidden from Allah in the earth or in the heavens [Qur’an 3:5]. Al-Kashshaf said: Meaning, nothing in the world is hidden from Him, so the heavens and the earth are used to express the world. This interpretation is supported by the Hadith that follows. Al-Nawawi said: The most apparent meaning is that each of them is the best of the women of the earth in her era, and as for the superiority between them, it is not addressed. (As stated by Al-Jazari, derived from Al-Mirqat)
Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Sufficient for you among the women of the world are Maryam (Mary)am bint Imran, Khadijah bint Khuwaylid, Fatimah bint Muhammad, and Asiyah, the wife of Pharaoh.” [Narrated by At-Tirmidhi]
Notes /
1 The statement “sufficient for you”: At-Tibi said: “Sufficient for you” is the subject, and “among the women” is related to it, with “Maryam (Mary)am” as its predicate. The address is general, meaning: These are sufficient for you among the women of the world, i.e., those who have reached the ranks of the perfected ones, to emulate them, mention their virtues and merits, and follow their detachment from worldly matters and focus on the Hereafter. It is likely that this Hadith was before Aishah attained her full perfection and reached the state of divine proximity. Al-Suyuti said in An-Naqayah: We believe that the most virtuous women are Maryam (Mary)am and Fatimah, and the most virtuous of the Mothers of the Believers are Khadijah and Aishah. There are differing opinions regarding the superiority between them, the third being to withhold judgment. I say: Withholding judgment regarding all of them is preferable, as there is no definitive evidence on the matter, and speculative opinions are contradictory and do not contribute to beliefs based on certainty. (Derived from Al-Mirqat)
Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) called Fatimah in the year of the conquest, 1 spoke to her privately, and she wept. Then he spoke to her again, and she laughed. When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) passed away, I asked her about her weeping and laughing. She said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) informed me that he would leave this world, so I wept. Then he informed me that I am the leader of the women of the people of Paradise, except for Maryam (Mary)am bint Imran, so I laughed. [Narrated by At-Tirmidhi]
Notes /
1 The statement “in the year of the conquest”: It appears that this is a mistake, as it is not established among the biographers that this incident occurred in the year of the conquest. Rather, it was during the Farewell Pilgrimage or during his illness leading to his departure. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: Jibril came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said: O Messenger of Allah, here is Khadijah coming to you with a vessel containing condiments and food. When she arrives, convey to her the greetings of peace from her Lord and from me, and give her glad tidings of a house in Paradise made of hollowed pearl, wherein there is no clamor or toil. [Agreed Upon]
Notes /
1 The statement “here is Khadijah coming, etc.”: It is said that she came from Makkah, and Allah sent her with food for him to eat during his seclusion. It should not escape you that it is well-known that the Messenger of Allah’s (ﷺ) seclusion in Hira was before Jibril’s descent, but perhaps he stayed there for a period after his descent as well, and Khadijah’s bringing food was during that time. The statement “from her Lord”: It is said that this indicates Khadijah’s superiority over Aishah, as will be mentioned regarding Aishah’s receiving greetings only from Jibril. (As stated in Al-Lama’at)
2 The statement “made of hollowed pearl”: With two fathahs, meaning a spacious, hollowed pearl like a lofty palace. The statement “no clamor”: With a fathah on the sad and kha, and “no” negates the category, meaning no shouting or mixing of voices in it, i.e., in the pearl, which refers to the palace. The statement “nor toil”: With two fathahs. The commentator said: Meaning, there is nothing to distract her from the delights of Paradise, nor any fatigue to diminish her. (Derived from Al-Mirqat)
Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated: I was not jealous of any of the Prophet’s (ﷺ) wives as I was of Khadijah, though I never saw her. But he would frequently mention her, and sometimes he would slaughter a sheep, cut it into pieces, and send them to Khadijah’s friends. Sometimes I would say to him: It is as if there was no woman in the world except Khadijah. He would say: “She was such and such, and I had children from her.” [Agreed Upon]
Notes /
1 The statement “I was not jealous of Khadijah”: The first “ma” is a negation, and the second is a relative pronoun or a verbal noun, meaning: I was not jealous as I was jealous of her or with the jealousy I felt for her. Jealousy refers to protectiveness and pride. The statement “though I never saw her” is a circumstantial clause implying the absence of jealousy due to the lack of a usual cause for it. Thus, she said: But he would frequently mention her, i.e., in praise. The statement “cut it into pieces”: With tashdid on the ta, meaning he would thoroughly cut it into pieces, i.e., limb by limb, making each limb a piece. The statement “she was such and such”: Meaning she was devout, steadfast, kind, compassionate, and so forth. At-Tibi said: He repeated “was” not to indicate duality but to attach to each instance a quality indicating her virtue. The statement “and I had children from her”: All his children were from her except Ibrahim, who was from Mariyah. (Derived from Al-Mirqat)
Abu Salamah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “O Aishah, this is Jibril conveying greetings of peace to you.” She said: And upon him be peace and Allah’s mercy. She said: He sees what I do not see. [Agreed Upon]
Notes /
1 The statement “this is Jibril conveying greetings of peace to you”: It is inferred from this Hadith that Khadijah has superiority over Aishah, as it is mentioned regarding her that Jibril conveyed greetings from her Lord, while here it is from Jibril himself. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said to me: “I was shown you in a dream for three nights. An angel brought you in a piece of silk, saying: This is your wife. I unveiled your face, and behold, it was you. I said: If this is from Allah, He will bring it to pass.” [Agreed Upon]
Notes /
1 The statement “in a piece of silk”: With two fathahs, meaning a piece of fine silk. The statement “saying”: Meaning the angel said to me: This, i.e., this image, is your wife, i.e., her likeness. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
2 The statement “I unveiled your face”: Meaning, I unveiled the cloth from the face of your image, and behold, you are that image now, or I unveiled your face when I saw you, and behold, you are like the image I saw in the dream. This is a profound metaphor where the added element is omitted, and the base is used in its place and likened to it. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
3 The statement “I said”: In response to the angel: If this, i.e., what I saw in the dream, is from Allah, He will bring it to pass. In the commentary of Muslim, Qadi Iyadh said: If this vision was before prophethood, before his dreams were purified from falsehood, it means if it is a true vision. If it was after prophethood, it has three meanings: First, that the vision is as it appears and requires no interpretation, so Allah will fulfill it. The doubt is whether it is a vision on its apparent meaning or needs interpretation. Second, that it refers to marriage in this world, so the doubt is whether it is a marriage in this world or in the Hereafter. Third, that there was no doubt, but he spoke with certainty in the form of doubt, a rhetorical device called feigned ignorance or blending doubt with certainty. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated: Jibril came with her image in a green silk cloth to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and said: This is your wife in this world and the Hereafter. [Narrated by At-Tirmidhi]
Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated: People would seek out the day of Aishah to present their gifts, aiming to please the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). She said: The wives of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) were in two groups: one group included Aishah, Hafsah, Safiyyah, and Sawdah, and the other group included Umm Salamah and the rest of the Messenger of Allah’s (ﷺ) wives. The group of Umm Salamah spoke to her, saying: Speak to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) to address the people and say: Whoever wishes to give a gift to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) should give it to him wherever he is. She spoke to him, and he said: “Do not hurt me regarding Aishah, for revelation has not come to me while I was in the garment of any woman except Aishah.” She said: I repent to Allah for hurting you, O Messenger of Allah. Then they called Fatimah and sent her to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). She spoke to him, and he said: “O my daughter, do you not love what I love?” She said: Yes. He said: “Then love this one.” [Agreed Upon]
Notes /
1 The statement “seek out”: Meaning to aim for additional reward. The statement “the day of Aishah”: Meaning the day when it was Aishah’s turn and the Prophet (ﷺ) was with her. The statement “to please the Messenger of Allah”: Meaning to increase his pleasure due to his greater love for her. The statement “wherever he is”: Meaning in any of the chambers of the Mothers of the Believers, intending that there should be no preference causing jealousy among them. The statement “do not hurt me regarding Aishah”: Meaning in her regard, which is stronger than “do not hurt Aishah,” as it implies that what hurts her hurts him. The statement “then love this one”: Meaning Aishah, i.e., do not mention anything that would cause displeasure to her. (Derived from Al-Mirqat)
2 The statement “agreed upon”: The author of Al-Mishkat said after this, mentioning the Hadith of Anas about the virtue of Aishah over other women: Its completion is “like the superiority of tharid over other foods” in the chapter on the beginning of creation, narrated by Abu Musa. There is a difference of opinion as to whether “women” refers to all women, his wives in general, or after Khadijah. The most apparent is that she is the best of all women, as the absolute statement suggests, due to her encompassing scholarly and practical perfections, expressed in the metaphor of tharid. The example of tharid is used because it is the best food of the Arabs, composed of bread, meat, and broth, with no equivalent among foods. It combines nourishment, pleasure, strength, ease of consumption, minimal chewing effort, and quick passage through the throat and esophagus. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used it as a metaphor for her to indicate that she was granted good character, fine disposition, eloquent speech, articulate expression, sharp intellect, sound judgment, and affection toward her husband. She is suitable for companionship, conversation, intimacy, and listening, among other qualities gathered in her. It is sufficient that she understood from the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) what no other woman understood and narrated from him what no man narrated like her. Allah knows best. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: No Hadith ever perplexed us, the companions of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), that we asked Aishah about except that we found knowledge of it with her. [Narrated by At-Tirmidhi, who said: This Hadith is good, authentic, and unique]
Notes /
1 The statement “perplexed”: Meaning confused. The statement “the companions of the Messenger of Allah”: With the accusative case in all reliable manuscripts. At-Tibi said: With the genitive case as a substitute for the genitive, though the accusative is permissible for specificity. The statement “Hadith ever”: Meaning the meaning of a Hadith or the absence of a Hadith related to an important issue. We asked Aishah, and we found knowledge of it, i.e., of that Hadith and its related matters, with her. (Derived from Al-Mirqat)
Musa ibn Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: I have not seen anyone more eloquent than Aishah. [Narrated by At-Tirmidhi, who said: This Hadith is good, authentic, and unique]
Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: It reached Safiyyah that Hafsah said: Daughter of a Jew. So she wept. The Prophet (ﷺ) entered upon her while she was weeping and said: “What makes you weep?” She said: Hafsah said to me that I am the daughter of a Jew. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Indeed, you are the daughter of a prophet, your uncle is a prophet, and you are under a prophet, so how can she boast over you?” Then he said: “Fear Allah, O Hafsah.” [Narrated by At-Tirmidhi and An-Nasa’i]
Notes /
1 The statement “you are the daughter of a prophet”: Safiyyah was the daughter of Huyayy ibn Akhtab, the Jew, from the tribe of Harun, and her uncle was Musa (peace be upon them). In this regard, Safiyyah surpasses Hafsah, even though both share descent from Ibrahim, Ismail, and Ishaq. (As understood from Al-Lama’at and Al-Mirqat)
