Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Indeed, among the most devoted 1 of people to me in companionship and wealth is Abu Bakr 2. If I were to take a close friend, I would have taken Abu Bakr as a close friend, but 3 the brotherhood of Islam and its affection suffice. Let no door 4 remain in the mosque except the door 5 of Abu Bakr.” In another narration: “If I were to take a close friend other than my Lord, I would have taken Abu Bakr as a close friend.” [Agreed Upon]

Notes /
English notes

1 His statement “among the most devoted of people”: with a fathah on the hamzah and mim, and tashdid on the nun. At-Turbashti said: It means the most generous and open-handed of them, who gives freely without expecting favor in return, as no one can claim favor over the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). It is mentioned in the context of praise, but if taken as implying favor, it would reflect blame on its doer, as favor undermines the deed. His statement “in companionship”: meaning steadfastly serving me by dedicating himself. “And his wealth”: meaning dedicating his wealth, indeed all of it, to my cause. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

2 His statement “Abu Bakr”: as in Sahih Muslim. In Bukhari, it is “Aba Bakr” with nasb, which is more apparent as it is the object of “among.” The raf‘ is problematic, as noted by At-Tibi. Al-Muzhir said: There are views: the first is that “among” is extra, per Al-Akhfash’s view. It is also said that “indeed” here means “yes,” as in the response to “May Allah curse the camel that carried me to you”: “Indeed, and its rider.” Thus, “Abu Bakr” is the subject, and “among the most devoted of people” is its predicate. (As stated in Al-Mirqat) In Al-Lama’at, it is said: The better view, as some have stated, is that it is narrated as it is. It is established from the statement of Amir al-Mu’minin Ali regarding what the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) granted to Tamim ad-Dari, witnessed by Abu Bakr ibn Abi Quhafah, Ali ibn Abi Talib, and Muawiyah ibn Abi Sufyan.

3 His statement “If I were to take a close friend”: It evidently refers to close friendship, with a dammah on the kha, meaning deep affection and love that permeates the heart, prompting the lover to share his secrets with the beloved. That is, if it were permissible for me to take a friend from creation whose love permeates my heart and who knows my secrets, I would have taken Abu Bakr as a friend, but I have no beloved with this quality except Allah. (As stated in Al-Lama’at) In Al-Mirqat, quoting Qadi al-Khalil: A friend is a companion relied upon in matters. The root is from need (khillah with fathah). The meaning is: If I were to take a friend from creation to turn to for needs and rely on for important matters.

4 His statement “but the brotherhood of Islam and its affection”: This is a rejoinder to the conditional statement. In essence: This is superior, as taking him as a friend is by his action, while the brotherhood of Islam is by Allah’s action. What Allah chooses for the Prophet (ﷺ) is better than what he chooses for himself. (Derived from Al-Mirqat)

5 His statement “Let no door remain in the mosque except the door of Abu Bakr”: At-Turbashti said: This was said during the illness in which he passed away, in his last sermon. It is clear that this alludes to Abu Bakr being his successor. If taken literally, it refers to the companions whose homes adjoined the mosque, making passages or windows to it. He ordered all to be sealed except Abu Bakr’s, honoring him first and subtly indicating the matter of succession, as he was uniquely deserving. If taken metaphorically, it refers to the caliphate, closing off any discussion or aspiration to it. The metaphor is stronger, as it is not established that Abu Bakr had a home beside the mosque; his home was in As-Sunh, in the highlands of Madinah. He paved the way for this meaning and confirmed it by saying: “If I were to take a close friend, I would have taken Abu Bakr,” to show he is most deserving of deputizing for him. This is supported by his appointing him to lead the prayer and his absolute refusal to let another take that position. (As stated in Al-Mirqat) In Sharh al-Aqa’id an-Nasafiyyah: The companions gathered on the day the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) passed away at Saqifah Bani Sa‘idah, and after consultation and dispute, they agreed on Abu Bakr’s caliphate. Ali pledged allegiance to him publicly after some hesitation. If the caliphate were not rightfully his, the companions would not have agreed, nor would Ali have contested it as he did with Muawiyah. He would have cited a text if one existed, as the Shi‘a claim. How could the Prophet’s companions agree on falsehood or abandon a clear text?

6 His statement “door”: with fathah on both khas, meaning a window in the wall admitting light to the house, or a small door between two houses or yards for passage. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

7 His statement “evidence, etc.”: Indicating that it eliminates everyone’s ambitions for the caliphate except Abu Bakr’s. (Derived from Al-Mirqat)

English

Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “No one has a favor 1 over us that we have not repaid, except Abu Bakr, for he has a favor over us that Allah will repay him for on the Day of Resurrection. No one’s wealth has benefited me as much as Abu Bakr’s wealth. If I were to take a close friend, I would have taken Abu Bakr as a close friend. Indeed, your companion is the close friend of Allah.” [Narrated by At-Tirmidhi]

Notes /
English notes

1 His statement “favor”: meaning giving and benevolence. His statement “we have repaid” is in most versions with a ya’ from sufficiency. In some, it is “we have rewarded” with a hamzah after the fa’, meaning we have recompensed. The latter meaning is more fitting for the context. The first meaning has no clear basis. (As stated in Al-Mirqat) The Shaykh said in Al-Lama’at: The first meaning also reduces to the second. Likewise, his statement “He will repay him.”

Amr ibn al-‘As (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) sent him to lead the army 1 of Dhat as-Salasil. I came to him and said: “Who 2 among the people is most beloved to you?” He said: “Aishah.” I said: “From the men?” He said: “Her father.” I said: “Then who?” He said: “Then Umar.” He named other men, so I remained silent, fearing he would place me last. [Agreed Upon]

Notes /
English notes

1 His statement “army of Dhat as-Salasil”: with the army in apposition. Qadi said: Salasil refers to sand that binds together, and the army was named so because they were sent to a land with such sand. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

2 His statement “Who among the people is most beloved to you”: meaning those present in your time, or specifically the army’s people, as the reason for his question was that the Prophet (ﷺ) appointed him over the army, including Abu Bakr and Umar, for a necessary reason. Amr thought he was preferred over them, so he asked. The general meaning is supported as more beneficial, as indicated by his response: “Aishah.” (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “It is not fitting for a people among whom is Abu Bakr that anyone else 1 should lead them.” [Narrated by At-Tirmidhi]

The Shaykh said in Al-Lama’at: This is evidence of his superiority in religion over all companions, so his precedence in the caliphate was also preferable and superior. Notes /
English notes

1 His statement “that anyone else should lead them”: This is evidence that he is the most virtuous of all companions. Thus, his entitlement to the caliphate is established, as it is not fitting to appoint the less virtuous as caliph when the more virtuous is present. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

Notes /
English notes

1 His statement “your father”: in apposition, and “your brother” is conjoined with Abu Bakr, meaning Abdur-Rahman. In Sharh Muslim: He requested her brother to write the document. His statement “so I may write a document”: meaning to order a document written. “For I fear that someone may aspire”: meaning to the caliphate if no document is written. “And say a speaker”: meaning I fear a speaker aspiring to leadership says: “I am so-and-so,” meaning I am entitled to the caliphate, though not deserving it with Abu Bakr present, as indicated by his statement: “Allah and the believers refuse.” The commentator said: Meaning they refuse the caliphate for anyone except Abu Bakr. The meaning of “Allah refuses”: He prevents it due to His displeasure or decree. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

2 His statement “Allah and the believers refuse except Abu Bakr”: An-Nawawi said: This is evidence for Ahl as-Sunnah that Abu Bakr’s caliphate was not based on an explicit text from the Prophet (ﷺ), but the companions agreed to appoint him due to his virtue. If there were a text for him or another, no dispute would have arisen between the Ansar and others initially, and the text’s keeper would have cited it, and they would have agreed. As for the Shi‘a’s claim of a text for Ali (may Allah ennoble his face), it is baseless, with no foundation among Muslims. Ali himself refutes them, as when asked: Do you have anything not in the Qur’an? He said: I have only what is in this document. If he had a text, he would have mentioned it. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

English notes

1 His statement “go to Abu Bakr”: meaning he is my successor absolutely, or consult him in this matter. The first is more evident. An-Nawawi said: It is not an explicit text for his caliphate but a prophecy of the unseen that Allah informed him of. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyyah said: I said to my father: “Who 1 is the best of people after the Prophet (ﷺ)?” He said: “Abu Bakr.” I said: “Then who?” He said: “Then Umar.” I feared 2 he would say Uthman, so I said: “Then you?” He said: “I am but a man among the Muslims.” [Narrated by Bukhari]

Notes /
English notes

1 His statement “Who is the best of people after the Prophet?” He said: “Abu Bakr.” Hence, it is said in Sharh al-Aqa’id an-Nasafiyyah: The best of people after our Prophet is Abu Bakr as-Siddiq. It is better to say: after the Prophets. Issam said, agreeing: The sun neither rose nor set after the Prophets and Messengers on anyone better than Abu Bakr.

2 His statement “I feared he would say Uthman”: meaning if I said: “Then who?” I deviated from the pattern of the question for this reason. Then I said: “Then you?” He said: “I am but a man among the Muslims.” This was out of humility, though he knew at the time of the question that he was the best of people without dispute, as it was after Uthman’s departure from this world. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: “In the time of the Prophet (ﷺ), we considered no one equal to Abu Bakr, then Umar, then Uthman, then we left the companions of the Prophet (ﷺ) without ranking 1 among them.” [Narrated by Bukhari]

Notes /
English notes

1 His statement “without ranking among them”: meaning ranking like them. Otherwise, the people of Badr, Uhud, the Pledge of Ridwan, and other learned companions are superior. Perhaps this ranking applies to the companions, while the Prophet’s household are more special, with a distinct ruling, so the omission of Ali, Hasan, Husayn, and the uncles does not apply. Al-Muzhir said: The reason is that he meant the elders and senior companions, whom the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) consulted in serious matters. Ali was young in the Prophet’s time, and his virtue is undeniable by Ibn Umar or others. At-Turbashti said: It is known that the people of Badr, the Pledge of Ridwan, and the two Aqabah pledges are superior, as are the learned and insightful companions and those detached from the world. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

English

Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) was mentioned in his presence, and he wept, saying: “I wish all my deeds were like his deeds on one day and one night of his. As for his night, it was the night he traveled with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) to the cave. When they reached it, he said: ‘By Allah, you will not enter until I enter first. If there is anything inside, it will strike me before you.’ He entered, cleared it, found a hole in its side, tore his garment to seal it, with two holes remaining. He placed his feet in them and said to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ): ‘Enter.’ The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) entered, rested his head in his lap, and slept. Abu Bakr was stung in his foot from the hole but did not move, fearing to wake the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). His tears fell on the face of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), who said: ‘What is wrong, O Abu Bakr?’ He said: ‘I was stung, may my father and mother be your ransom.’ The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) spat, and the pain left him. Then it recurred 1, and it was the cause of his departure from this world. As for his day, when the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) returned to his Lord, the Arabs apostatized and said: ‘We will not pay 2 zakat.’ He said: ‘If they withhold 3 even a rope, I will fight them over it.’ I said: ‘O Caliph of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), win over the people and be gentle with them.’ He said to me: ‘A tyrant in Jahiliyyah and a coward 4 in Islam? The revelation has ceased, and the religion is complete. Shall it diminish while I am alive?’” [Narrated by Razin]

Notes /
English notes

1 His statement “Then it recurred”: with qaf and dad mu‘jamah, meaning the wound reopened after healing, referring to the poison’s effect returning. (As stated in Al-Lama’at) At-Tibi said: Meaning the wound relapsed after healing from the Prophet’s spit. In Al-Mirqat: “And it was,” meaning the recurrence caused his departure from this world, i.e., he attained martyrdom for Allah’s sake while being a companion to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) on his path.

2 His statement “We will not pay zakat”: possibly an explanatory conjunction, as some scholars said: One who is told to pay zakat and says, “I will pay,” becomes a disbeliever. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

3 His statement “If they withhold even a rope”: with kasrah on the first letter. In An-Nihayah: The rope refers to the cord used to tie a camel taken as charity. Al-Khattabi said: Such examples use the least significant item for emphasis, like a speck or seed. (Derived from Al-Mirqat)

4 His statement “a coward in Islam”: meaning in its rulings. The narration that the best of Arabs in Jahiliyyah are the best in Islam if they gain understanding suggests their original traits persist, but their application differs in religious matters, previously spent on egoistic or custoMaryam (Mary) pursuits. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

English notes

1 His statement “You are my companion in the cave”: meaning in the Thawr cave in Makkah during the Hijrah from the lands of disbelievers. The meaning is: You are my companion by Allah’s testimony, as the interpreters agreed that the companion in the verse is Abu Bakr. They said: Denying Abu Bakr’s companionship is disbelief, as it denies a clear text, unlike denying the companionship of Umar, Uthman, or Ali (may Allah be pleased with them all). His statement “and my companion at the Pool”: implies he is his companion in both worlds, as he is now in the Barzakh. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

1 His statement “Then I will wait for the people of Makkah until I am gathered between the two sanctuaries”: In Al-Mirqat: It appears that he (ﷺ) waits for the people of Makkah at Baqi‘ until they gather, then they proceed to the place of gathering, the land of Sham, where they join the rest of creation.

Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that Abu Bakr entered upon the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), and he said: “You are Allah’s freed one from the Fire.” From that day, he was called 1 Atiq. [Narrated by At-Tirmidhi]

Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) finished, Jibril descended and said: “Abu Bakr has spoken the truth.” The author of Al-Mishkat said: His name is Abdullah ibn Uthman Abu Quhafah, with a dammah on the qaf, ibn Amir ibn Amr ibn Ka‘b ibn Sa‘d ibn Tamim ibn Murrah, joining the Prophet (ﷺ) at the seventh ancestor. He said: “Whoever wishes to see one freed from the Fire, let him look at Abu Bakr.” He witnessed all battles with the Prophet (ﷺ), never parting from him in Jahiliyyah or Islam. He was the first man to embrace Islam. He, his parents, children, and grandchildren were companions, a distinction no other companion had. He was born in Makkah two years and four months after the Event of the Elephant, minus a few days. He departed from this world in Madinah on Tuesday night, eight days remaining in Jumada al-Akhirah, year 13, between Maghrib and Isha, aged sixty-three. He willed that his wife, Asma’ bint Umais (may Allah be pleased with her), wash him, and she did. Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) prayed over him. His caliphate lasted two years and four months. Many companions and followers narrated from him, though he narrated few Hadiths due to his short time after the Prophet (ﷺ). (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

1 His statement “he was called Atiq”: meaning he was given this title from that day. Ibn Zughar narrated in Inba’ Najaba’ al-Abna’ that Qadi Abu al-Hasan Ahmad ibn Muhammad az-Zubaidi reported with his chain in his book Ma‘ali al-‘Arsh ila ‘Awali al-Farsh that Abu Hurairah said: The Muhajirun and Ansar gathered with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). Abu Bakr said: “By your life, O Messenger of Allah, I never prostrated to an idol, though I was in Jahiliyyah for such-and-such years. My father, Abu Quhafah, took me by the hand to a chamber with idols and said: ‘This is your exalted deity, so prostrate to it,’ then left me. I approached the idol and said: ‘I am hungry, feed me,’ but it did not answer. I said: ‘I am naked, clothe me,’ but it did not answer. I took a rock and said: ‘I will throw this rock at you. If you are a god, protect yourself.’ It did not answer, so I threw the rock, and it fell on its face. My father returned and said: ‘What is this, my son?’ I said: ‘It is as you see.’ He took me to my mother and told her. She said: ‘Leave him, for he is the one Allah spoke to me about.’ I said: ‘O mother, what did He speak to you about?’ She said: ‘The night I was in labor, no one was with me. I heard a caller say: O maid of Allah, truly, rejoice in the freed son, named in the heavens as As-Siddiq, companion and friend to Muhammad.’”
