Creation of Paradise and the Fire
1 His saying "the chapter on the creation of Paradise and the Fire": that is, concerning their being already created, according to the school of the people of the Sunnah and the congregation. So it is in al-Mirqat.
Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “The Fire and Paradise disputed. 1 The Fire said: ‘I have been favored with the arrogant and tyrants.’ Paradise said: ‘Why is it that only the weak, lowly, and simple among people enter me?’ 2 Allah said to Paradise: ‘You are My mercy; I show mercy through you to whom I will of My servants.’ He said to the Fire: ‘You are My punishment; I punish through you whom I will of My servants. Each of you will have its fill.’ As for the Fire, it will not be filled until Allah places His foot (according to His majesty), 3 and it says: ‘Enough, enough!’ Then it will be filled, and some parts will be folded into others. Allah will not wrong any of His creation. 4 As for Paradise, Allah will create for it a people.” 5 [Agreed Upon]
Notes /
1 His statement: “The Fire and Paradise disputed,” meaning verbally or by their state. Al-Tayyibi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: This dispute is real, as Allah can make each sentient and capable of speech, or it is metaphorical. I say: The former is the relied-upon view of the people of Sunnah, as stated in Al-Ma’alim. Allah has knowledge in inanimate objects and animals besides rational beings, known only to Him. They have prayer, glorification, and fear. One must believe in this and entrust its knowledge to Allah. (As stated in Al-Mirqat) Al-Sayyid said: The Fire’s speech may be boastful, and Paradise’s speech may be a complaint, as previously mentioned.
2 His statement: “Weak among people,” meaning in body and wealth. “Lowly” means insignificant in their eyes. This is relative to most people, as Allah said: “But most of them do not know” (Al-An’am: 37) and “But most of them are ignorant” (Al-An’am: 111). In Allah’s sight, they are great, as recognized by scholars and the righteous. Describing them as lowly and weak is for this reason, or it refers to the majority. “Simple” means lacking experience or being heedless, meaning those unconcerned with worldly matters, focused on the Hereafter, as in the narration: “Most of the people of Paradise are the simple,” unlike disbelievers, as Allah said: “They know the apparent of worldly life but are heedless of the Hereafter” (Ar-Rum: 7). (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
3 His statement: “Until Allah places His foot.” In another narration: “His foot.” The way of the righteous predecessors is submission and delegation with transcendence, aligning with Imam Malik’s approach and our greatest Imam’s in Al-Fiqh al-Akbar. Submission is safest, and Allah knows best. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
4 His statement: “Allah will not wrong any of His creation,” meaning He does not create people for the Fire, as that would appear unjust, though not truly so, as it is His dominion. Allah does not do what resembles injustice. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
5 His statement: “Create for it a people,” meaning a group who did not perform deeds. This is Allah’s favor, just as creating people for the Fire, as some say, would be just. Allah knows best. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Hell will continue to have people cast into it, saying: ‘Is there more?’ until the Lord of Might places His foot in it. Then its parts will fold into each other, and it will say: ‘Enough, by Your might and generosity!’ And there will remain in Paradise a surplus 1 until Allah creates a people for it and settles them in its surplus.” [Agreed Upon]
Notes /
1 His statement: “There will remain in Paradise a surplus,” meaning empty dwellings without occupants. His statement: “Until Allah creates a people for it.” Al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: His statement: “As for Paradise, Allah will create for it a people” is evidence for the people of Sunnah that reward is not dependent on deeds, as these are created then and given Paradise without deeds. Al-Tayyibi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: The Mu’tazila may say that negating injustice for those who did not sin proves that punishing them would be unjust, which is our view. The response is: Even if we say punishing them is not unjust, as He does not act in another’s dominion, He does not do so due to His generosity and kindness, so negating injustice affirms generosity. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “When Allah created Paradise, He said to Jibril: ‘Go and look at it.’ Jibril went and looked at it and what Allah prepared for its people. He returned and said: ‘O Lord, by Your might, no one who hears of it will fail to enter it.’ 1 Then He surrounded it with hardships. He said: ‘O Jibril, go and look at it.’ Jibril went, looked at it, and returned, saying: ‘O Lord, by Your might, I fear no one will enter it.’ When Allah created the Fire, He said: ‘O Jibril, go and look at it.’ Jibril went, looked at it, and returned, saying: ‘O Lord, by Your might, no one who hears of it will enter it.’ Then He surrounded it with desires. He said: ‘O Jibril, go and look at it.’ Jibril went, looked at it, and returned, saying: ‘O Lord, by Your might, I fear no one will remain but will enter it.’” [Narrated by At-Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud, and An-Nasa’i]
Notes /
1 His statement: “No one who hears of it will fail to enter it,” meaning they will strive for it and focus only on its beauty and splendor. “Surrounded it with hardships,” meaning religious obligations, which are disliked by human souls. This indicates that meanings have tangible forms in those abodes. “No one who hears of it will enter it,” meaning they will flee from it and avoid it. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) led us in prayer one day, then ascended the pulpit, gestured toward the Qiblah of the mosque, and said: “Indeed, since I led you in prayer, I have seen Paradise and the Fire represented toward this wall. 1 I have never seen good and evil as I have today.” [Narrated by Bukhari]
Notes /
1 His statement: “Represented toward this wall.” In some narrations: “I saw Paradise and the Fire on the surface of this wall.” They raise the issue: How can Paradise and the Fire be represented on a wall? They answer: As a garden or vast house is reflected in a mirror, the representation need not match its size. Alternatively, “toward” or “on the surface” is not a state of the object but of the subject, meaning he saw them while in that place. I say: The Hadith does not necessitate their representation on the wall itself but in its direction, so the vision of the representation is in that direction, with the representation existing elsewhere. (As stated in Al-Lama’at)
