Jarir ibn Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Indeed, you will see your Lord clearly.” 1 In another narration, he said: “We were sitting with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), and he looked at the full moon and said: ‘Indeed, you will see your Lord as you see this moon, without being crowded in seeing Him. So, if you are able to not be overcome regarding the prayer before sunrise and before sunset, then do so.’” Then he recited: “And glorify the praises of your Lord before the rising of the sun and before its setting” (Taha: 130). [Agreed Upon]

1 His statement: “You will see your Lord clearly.” Al-Nawawi said: Know that the belief of the people of Sunnah unanimously holds that seeing Allah, the Exalted, is possible and not rationally impossible. They also unanimously agree that it will occur in the Hereafter based on textual evidence, and that the believers will see Allah, the Exalted, while the disbelievers will not. Some innovating groups, such as the Mu’tazila, Khawarij, and some Murji’a, claimed that no one among creation can see Allah and that such vision is rationally impossible. This claim is a clear error and gross ignorance. The proofs from the Qur’an, Sunnah, and the consensus of the Companions and those who followed them from the righteous predecessors affirm the vision of Allah, the Exalted, in the Hereafter for the believers. Around twenty Companions narrated this from the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), and the verses of the Qur’an regarding this are well-known. The objections of the innovators have been addressed in the books of the Sunni theologians. As for seeing Allah, the Exalted, in this world, it is possible, but the majority of the early and later scholars, including theologians and others, hold that it does not occur in this world. Imam Abu al-Qasim al-Qushayri narrated in his well-known epistle from Imam Abu Bakr ibn Furak that Imam Abu al-Hasan al-Ash’ari held two opinions: one affirming its occurrence and the other denying it. The belief of the people of truth is that vision is a capacity granted by Allah, the Exalted, to His creation, and it does not require rays, facing the seen, or anything else. Rather, it is customary for vision among creation to occur with these conditions by convention, not necessity. Our theologians have established this with clear proofs. Seeing Allah, the Exalted, does not necessitate attributing a direction to Him, as He is exalted above that. The believers will see Him without direction, just as they know Him without direction. I say: And just as He sees us without direction, opposition, or anything else. The conclusion is that the unseen cannot be compared to the seen, especially the Creator to the created. Hence, it is said: “Kings are not compared to blacksmiths.” This is as stated in Al-Mirqat. The author of Sharh al-‘Aqa’id al-Nasafiyyah explicitly stated this and added: As for seeing Allah in a dream, it has been reported from many of the righteous predecessors, and it is clear that this is a type of witnessing by the heart, not the eyes. In Al-Khasa’is al-Sughra by Al-Suyuti, it is stated: Among the unique qualities of the Prophet (ﷺ) is that it is permissible for him to see Allah, the Exalted, in a dream, while this is not permissible for others according to one opinion, and Abu Mansur al-Maturidi held this view, as stated in Al-Halabi. 2 His statement: “If you are able.” Al-Qadi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: The connection of “If you are able” with “You will see” by the particle “fa” indicates that one who persists in performing and preserving prayers is worthy of seeing his Lord. His statement “not be overcome” means not to persist in being defeated by preoccupation away from the Fajr and Asr prayers. These two prayers were specifically emphasized because Fajr involves the soul’s inclination to rest and sleep, and Asr coincides with the activity of markets and people’s engagement in transactions. Thus, one who is not overtaken by negligence in these two prayers, despite their strong deterrents, is even less likely to be negligent in others. Allah, the Exalted, knows best. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

Abu Razin al-Uqayli (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: I said, “O Messenger of Allah, will every one of us see his Lord alone 1 on the Day of Resurrection?” He replied: “Yes.” I said, “What is the sign of that in His creation?” He said: “O Abu Razin, does not each of you see the full moon alone?” 2 I said, “Yes.” He said: “Indeed, it is but a creation of Allah, and Allah is greater and more majestic.” [Narrated by Abu Dawud]

English notes

1 His statement: “Alone.” It is narrated in two ways: with the opening of the “mim” and stillness of the “kha” with the doubling of the “ya,” from “khala” (to be alone), or with the “mim” taking a dammah and a single “ya,” from “akhlayt bihi” (to be alone with). The meaning is that everyone sees Him individually, without anything obstructing the vision. (As stated in Al-Lama’at)

2 His statement: “O Abu Razin, does not each of you see the full moon?” Al-Tayyibi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: The questioner compared the vision of Allah, the Exalted, to what is customary, where a large group seeing something varies in their vision, especially if it is somewhat obscure, causing crowding. Some see it fully, while others see less. The intent of “alone” is to affirm the completeness of the vision, which is why the response likened it to the full moon, not the crescent. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Indeed, the lowest in status among the people of Paradise will be one who looks at his gardens, wives, pleasures, servants, and couches over a distance of a thousand years. 1 The most honored among them with Allah is the one who looks at His Face morning and evening.” 2 Then he recited: “Faces on that Day will be radiant, looking at their Lord” (Al-Qiyamah: 22-23). [Narrated by Ahmad and At-Tirmidhi]

English notes

1 His statement: “A distance of a thousand years,” meaning that his gardens and what is associated with them exist over a distance of a thousand years. The meaning is that his dominion spans that distance. It is said that this is a metaphor for the one in Paradise possessing what equates to a thousand years’ journey, as ownership in Paradise differs from that in this world. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

2 His statement: “Morning and evening,” meaning in the morning and evening. Hence, he recommended preserving the prayers at the two ends of the day, as mentioned earlier. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “While the people of Paradise are in their bliss, a light will shine upon them. They will raise their heads, and behold, their Lord will appear above them, saying: ‘Peace be upon you, O people of Paradise.’ This is His statement: ‘Peace, a word from a Merciful Lord’ (Yasin: 58). He said: ‘He will look at them, and they will look at Him, and they will not turn to any other bliss as long as they are looking at Him, until He withdraws, and His light remains.’” 1 [Narrated by Ibn Majah] Malik ibn Anas was asked 2 about His statement: “Looking at their Lord” (Al-Qiyamah: 23). Some 3 said 4 it means “looking at His reward.” Malik said: “They have lied. Where are they with regard to His statement: ‘Nay, indeed, they will be veiled from their Lord on that Day’ (Al-Mutaffifin: 15)? The people will look at Allah on the Day of Resurrection with their eyes.” Malik said: “If the believers did not see their Lord on the Day of Resurrection, Allah would not have reproached the disbelievers with being veiled, as He said: ‘Nay, indeed, they will be veiled from their Lord on that Day’ (Al-Mutaffifin: 15).” [Narrated in Sharh al-Sunnah]

Notes /
English notes

1 His statement: “And His light remains,” meaning the effect and fruit of His manifestation on their outward and inward selves, as witnessed by those who experience spiritual unveiling after annihilation. Allah, the Exalted, knows best. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

2 His statement: “Malik ibn Anas was asked.” He is the founder of the Maliki school. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

3 His statement: “Some...” Meaning the Mu’tazila and similar innovators. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

4 His statement: “Some said,” meaning regarding the verse, “looking at His reward.” Some said that “ila” here means the blessing, singular of “ala,” the object of “looking,” meaning awaiting the blessing of their Lord. This was refuted, as awaiting implies suffering, which does not exist in Paradise. Reflect on this. His statement: “Veiled,” meaning they do not see Allah, the Exalted. The veil is the severest punishment, just as vision is an addition beyond every reward, as Allah said: “For those who do good is the best reward and more” (Yunus: 26). The meaning is: Where are those people, as they have fallen into error and heedlessness regarding the implication of this statement, that the believers are not veiled but are drawn to the station of looking and become beloved in their perfection due to their love. Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said regarding: “The heart did not lie about what it saw. 1 Will you then dispute with him about what he saw? And he certainly saw Him at another descent” (Al-Najm: 11-13): “He saw Him with his heart twice.” [Narrated by Muslim] In a narration by At-Tirmidhi, he said: “Muhammad saw his Lord.” 2 Ikrima said: 3 I said, “Does not Allah say: ‘Vision cannot encompass Him, but He encompasses all vision’ (Al-An’am: 103)?” He replied: “Woe to you! That refers to when He manifests with His light, which is His light. Indeed, he saw his Lord twice.”

Notes /
English notes

1 His statement: “The heart did not lie about what it saw.” Al-Sayyid said: It is narrated from Aisha and Ibn Mas’ud that he did not see Allah on the night of the Isra’, and that what was seen in these verses was Jibril. The majority hold that he saw Him. Some say with his heart, not his eyes, while others say with his eyes, which is the correct view. Ikrima understood from Ibn Abbas’s statement that he saw Him with his eyes, supported by his heart. Hence, he cited the verse. If the intent was that the vision by the heart was as clear as visual sight, the question about the verse would not hold unless the verse is understood to negate encompassing vision as clear as visual sight. Sight is mentioned because it is typically the means of clear perception. It appears that Ikrima’s question was based on Ibn Abbas’s statement: “Muhammad saw his Lord,” as narrated by At-Tirmidhi, not “He saw Him with his heart,” as narrated by Muslim. Thus, there is no issue in citing the verse. The meaning of Ibn Abbas’s response is that if He manifests with His light as it truly is, perception collapses. But if He manifests to the extent that human capacity can bear, it is perceived in that manner.

2 His statement: “Muhammad saw his Lord.” Scholars, past and present, differed on whether he saw his Lord on the night of the Isra’ in three opinions. Ibn Abbas and a group affirmed it, another group hesitated, and Aisha denied it, as narrated in Sahih Muslim, along with Abu Hurairah and others, which is the well-known opinion of Ibn Mas’ud and followed by some Hadith scholars and theologians. Al-Nawawi, following others, said: Aisha’s denial was not based on a transmitted Hadith; if she had one, she would have mentioned it. She relied on her interpretation of the verse’s apparent meaning. Other Companions opposed her, and when a Companion’s opinion is contradicted by another, it is not considered authoritative by consensus. Her argument based on: “Vision cannot encompass Him” (Al-An’am: 103) is answered by the fact that encompassing means full comprehension, and Allah cannot be fully comprehended. Thus, a text negating comprehension does not negate vision without comprehension, like seeing the moon without grasping its reality. A sound Hadith states: “I cannot enumerate Your praise; You are as You have praised Yourself.” This does not negate praising Him. Al-Qurtubi preferred withholding judgment due to the lack of definitive evidence, as both sides rely on apparent meanings open to interpretation. This matter is doctrinal, requiring conclusive evidence. It is narrated from Ibn Abbas, Anas, Abu Dharr, Ka’b, Az-Zuhri, Mu’ammar, and others that he saw Him with his eyes, and Al-Hasan swore by it. It is also narrated from Ibn Mas’ud, Abu Hurairah, and Ahmad ibn Hanbal. Some Ash’ari scholars affirmed it. I say: I wonder what Imam Abu Mansur al-Maturidi said; perhaps Allah will grant knowledge hereafter. In Al-Nawawi’s commentary on Muslim, Ibn Mas’ud said: “The Messenger of Allah saw Jibril.” This is his view regarding: “The heart did not lie about what it saw” (Al-Najm: 11). The majority of exegetes hold that it refers to seeing his Lord. Some say with his heart, not his eyes, while others say with his eyes. Abu al-Hasan al-Wahidi said: The exegetes state this informs of the Prophet’s vision of his Lord on the night of the Mi’raj. Ibn Abbas, Abu Dharr, and Ibrahim al-Taymi said he saw Him with his heart, meaning Allah granted his heart sight or created sight in his heart to see his Lord clearly, as one sees with the eyes. Ali al-Qari (may Allah have mercy on him) said: This is a good opinion and an acceptable approach, reconciling the various statements. Allah knows best. In Sharh al-‘Aqa’id al-Nasafiyyah, it is said: The correct view is that he saw his Lord with his heart, not his eyes. Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Reconciling Ibn Abbas’s affirmation and Aisha’s denial is possible by interpreting her denial as referring to visual sight and his affirmation as heart-based vision, not mere knowledge, as he constantly knew Him. The vision was created in his heart, as sight is created in the eyes for others. Vision does not rationally require a specific condition, though it is customary to occur through the eyes. In Ruh al-Bayan, Ka’b said: Allah divided His vision and speech between Muhammad and Musa. Mentioning vision alongside speech suggests visual sight, as Musa requested it and was denied, implying the Prophet was favored with what Musa was denied. In Kashf al-Asrar, some said he saw Him with his heart, not his eyes, which contradicts the Sunnah. The correct view is that he saw Him with his eyes. In Madarij al-Nubuwwah, scholars agree on the possibility of seeing Allah in this world, so there is no barrier to seeing Him during the Mi’raj, as its station pertains to the Hereafter. In Al-Mirqat, some Sufis claimed to see Him, but the scholars unanimously declared them misguided, and masters like Abu Sa’id al-Kharraz and Al-Junayd wrote books and treatises refuting such claims, agreeing that one who claims this does not truly know Allah. (Extracted from Al-Khazin, Ruh al-Bayan, Madarij al-Nubuwwah, Al-Mirqat, and Al-Sirah al-Muhammadiyyah by Mawlana Muhammad Karamat al-Ali al-Dihlawi (may Allah have mercy on him))

3 His statement: “Ikrima said.” It appears that Ikrima’s question was based on Ibn Abbas’s statement: “Muhammad saw his Lord,” as narrated by At-Tirmidhi, not “He saw Him with his heart,” as narrated by Muslim. Thus, there is no issue in citing the verse. The meaning of Ibn Abbas’s response is that if He manifests with His light as it truly is, perception collapses. But if He manifests to the extent that human capacity can bear, it is perceived in that manner. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

Al-Sha’bi said: Ibn Abbas met Ka’b at Arafah and asked him about something, and he proclaimed “Allahu Akbar” so loudly that the mountains echoed. 1 Ibn Abbas said: “We are Banu Hashim.” Ka’b said: “Indeed, Allah divided His vision and speech between Muhammad and Musa. He spoke to Musa twice, and Muhammad saw Him twice.” Masruq said: I entered upon Aisha and said, “Did Muhammad see his Lord?” She said: “You have spoken of something that makes my hair stand on end.” I said: “Take it slowly,” then recited: 2 “He certainly saw some of the greatest signs of his Lord” (Al-Najm: 18). She said: “Where are you going with this? That was Jibril. Whoever tells you that Muhammad saw his Lord, concealed something he was commanded to convey, or knows the five things Allah mentioned: ‘Indeed, Allah has knowledge of the Hour and sends down the rain’ (Luqman: 34), has uttered a grave falsehood. Rather, he saw Jibril. He did not see him in his true form except twice: once at Sidrat al-Muntaha and once in Ajyad, with six hundred wings filling the horizon.” [Narrated by At-Tirmidhi] In a narration by the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) with additions and variations: He said: I said to Aisha, “What about His statement: ‘Then he approached and descended, and was at a distance of two bow lengths or nearer’ (Al-Najm: 8-9)?” She said: “That was Jibril. 3 He used to come to him in the form of a man, but this time he came in his true form, filling the horizon.”

English notes

1 His statement: “He proclaimed ‘Allahu Akbar’ so loudly that the mountains echoed.” The interpretation is that the proclamation was to magnify that station and inspire longing for that goal, but he did not respond directly. Ibn Abbas’s statement: “We are Banu Hashim,” means we deserve magnification, speech, and understanding. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

2 His statement: “Then I recited: ‘He certainly saw some of the greatest signs of his Lord’.” It is clear that this verse is not suitable for proving the vision. Rather, the intent is that I recited the verses culminating in this one, including: “Then he approached and descended” (Al-Najm: 8), as in another narration. (As stated in Al-Lama’at)

3 Her statement: “That was Jibril.” Meaning not the Lord in this context. She then clarified to address the potential question: He always saw Jibril, so why specify this instance? She said: “Jibril used to come in the form of a man,” often resembling Dihya. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

English notes

1 His statement: “All of them refer to seeing Jibril.” Meaning all the pronouns refer to Jibril. This interpretation aligns with Aisha’s understanding of the verses, as previously noted. Some scholars said that Ibn Mas’ud was the most knowledgeable of the Companions after the four Caliphs. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

English notes

1 His statement: “Did you see your Lord?” Meaning on the night of the Mi’raj. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

2 His statement: “Light, how could I see Him?” Ibn al-Malik said: There is a difference of opinion regarding his vision that night. The Hadith supports both sides depending on the narration. If narrated with an open “alif” and doubled “nun,” it is a question implying denial. If narrated with a kasra on the “nun,” it supports those who affirm it, indicating a past event described in the present tense. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
