English

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “The Hour will not come until it is no longer said on earth: ‘Allah, Allah.’” In another narration, he said: “The Hour will not come upon anyone who says: ‘Allah, Allah.’” [Narrated by Muslim]

Notes /
English notes

1 His statement: “Until it is no longer said on earth: ‘Allah, Allah’”: Both words are in the nominative case, repeated for emphasis. The commentator said: “Allah, Allah” is a subject and predicate, meaning Allah, the only one worthy of worship. If narrated in the accusative case, it implies warning, meaning “Fear Allah and worship Him.” Thus, it means the Hour will not come until no Muslim remains on earth to warn people of Allah. Alternatively, it means Allah’s name will no longer be mentioned, so there is no wisdom in people’s continued existence. This indicates that the world’s survival is due to the blessing of righteous scholars, devout worshippers, and believers in general. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

English notes

1 His statement: “The Hour will not come except upon the worst of creation”: Al-Tayyibi said: If it is asked how this hadith reconciles with the previous hadith: “There will always be a group from my nation fighting for the truth, manifest until the Day of Resurrection,” we say the former is general for all times, while the latter is specific. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated: I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: “The night and day will not pass until Al-Lat and Al-Uzza are worshipped.” I said: “O Messenger of Allah, I thought when Allah revealed: It is He who sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth to make it prevail over all religion, even if the polytheists dislike it [At-Tawbah: 33], that this was complete.” He said: “There will be of that what Allah wills. Allah will send a pleasant breeze that will take the soul of everyone with even a mustard seed’s weight of faith in their heart, leaving only those with no good in them, who will revert to the religion of their forefathers.” [Narrated by Muslim]

English notes

1 Her statement: “I thought”: The word “in” is the lightened form of the heavy “inna,” with the lam as the distinguishing marker. Al-Mudhhir said: Its meaning is: The matter is that I thought. Her statement “that this” with the accusative hamza is the object of “I thought,” and “when Allah revealed” is its temporal clause, meaning I thought at the time of the revelation of that verse that the ruling it implies would be complete, effective, and encompassing for all times. In a sound version, it is “complete” in the nominative case, meaning that the worship of idols has ended and will never return. His statement “There will be of that” refers to some of what was mentioned about the completion of the religion and the diminution of disbelief. His statement “no good in them” means no Islam, no faith, no Qur’an, no pilgrimage, no other pillars, no scholars, or eminent figures. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

Abdullah ibn Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “The Dajjal will emerge in my nation and remain for forty” 1, I do not know whether it is forty days, months, or years, “then Allah will send Jesus, son of Mary, resembling Urwah ibn Mas’ud. He will pursue him and destroy him. Then people will live for seven years with no enmity between any two. Then Allah will send a cold breeze from the direction of Sham, and no one with even an atom’s weight of good or faith in their heart will remain on earth without it taking them, even if one of you were to enter the heart of a mountain, it would follow them to take them.” He said: “The worst of people will remain, as light as birds and with the instincts of beasts, neither recognizing good nor denouncing evil. Satan will appear to them and say: ‘Will you not respond?’ They will say: ‘What do you command us?’ He will command them to worship idols, and in that state, their sustenance will be abundant, and their lives will be good. Then the trumpet will be blown, and no one will hear it without tilting one side and raising the other. The first to hear it will be a man plastering his camel’s trough, and he will faint, and the people will faint. Then Allah will send rain like dew, and the bodies of people will grow from it. Then it will be blown again, and they will stand, looking on. Then it will be said: ‘O people, come to your Lord, and stop them, for they will be questioned [As-Saffat: 24].’ It will be said: ‘Bring forth the share of the Fire.’ It will be asked: ‘How many?’ It will be said: ‘From every thousand, nine hundred and ninety-nine.’ That is the day that will make children grey-haired [Al-Muzzammil: 17], and that is the day when the shin will be uncovered [Al-Qalam: 42].” [Narrated by Muslim]

Notes /
English notes

1 His statement: “Forty”: Allah left it ambiguous for a wisdom, or the narrator forgot, hence he said: “I do not know whether it is forty days, months, or years.” Al-Turbishti said: His statement “I do not know” up to “then Allah will send” is from the Companion, meaning the Prophet (ﷺ) did not clarify beyond “forty,” so I do not know which of the three he meant. His statement “as light as birds” means their restlessness and flightiness at the slightest provocation, like the state of the wicked in their lack of dignity, stability, and inclination to corruption. His statement “with the instincts of beasts” refers to their deficient intellects, indicating they are devoid of knowledge and forbearance, dominated by recklessness, anger, savagery, destruction, and lack of mercy. His statement “in that state” refers to their evil traits and idolatrous worship. His statement “abundant” with a doubled ra’ means plentiful. His statement “their sustenance will be abundant, and their lives will be good” refers to quantity in the first and quality in the second, or the first indicates abundant rains, rivers, and fruits, while the second refers to safety, absence of oppression, health, and wealth. His statement “tilting one side” means inclining the side of the neck in fear and shock. His statement “tilting one side and raising the other” means the listener will faint, with their head falling to one side or the other, as is the case with one struck by a cry that splits their heart. The action is attributed as if it were voluntary. His statement “and stop them” in a sound version includes the conjunction, as Al-Tayyibi said: It is conjoined to “it will be said” by estimation, meaning it is said to the people: “Come,” and to the angels: “Stop them.” In some versions, it is without the conjunction, indicating a new statement. The command is addressed to the angels, with the pronoun referring to the people, meaning detain them. His statement “the day when the shin will be uncovered” refers to a great severity, as it is said: “The war has uncovered its shin” when it intensifies. Al-Khattabi said: This is among the matters our elders hesitated to speak about, leaving it to its apparent meaning without interpreting its inner meaning, as is their way with matters whose essence is beyond comprehension. Those who interpreted it said: It is the day of great severity and calamity, the arrival of the Hereafter, the manifestation of it, and the departure of the world. It is said of a matter when it intensifies and becomes clear: “It has uncovered its shin,” which is permissible in language, even if the matter has no shin. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
