Umar ibn Al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that he went out one day to the mosque of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and found Muadh ibn Jabal sitting by the grave of the Prophet, weeping. He asked: “What makes you weep?” Muadh replied: “Something I heard from the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) makes me weep. I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: ‘Indeed, even a little showing off 1 is polytheism 2, and whoever shows enmity to a friend 3 of Allah has challenged Allah to battle. Verily, Allah loves the righteous, the pure, and the inconspicuous, those who, when absent, are not missed, and when present, are neither invited nor honored. Their hearts are lamps of guidance, emerging from every dark and dusty trial 4.’” [Narrated by Ibn Majah and Al-Bayhaqi in Shu‘ab al-Iman]

Notes /
English notes

1 His statement: “even a little showing off is polytheism” indicates that hardly anyone, even the strong, is safe from it, so how much more the weak? Thus, it is among the reasons for weeping. Another reason is harming the friends of Allah, most of whom are inconspicuous, as in the sacred Hadith: “My friends are under My domes; none know them but Me.” A person is rarely free from harsh words toward brethren, which leads to disobedience. It seems this is what he meant by “whoever shows enmity,” etc. 2 His statement: “showing off” – the precise meaning is that showing off (riyaa) is derived from sight, meaning actions done to be seen by people, not sufficing with Allah’s sight alone. Reputation (sum‘ah) is derived from hearing, meaning actions or words done to be heard by people, not sufficing with Allah’s hearing. Sometimes, each term is used in place of the other, or they are combined for emphasis or to specify their distinct meanings. Their opposite is sincerity in actions for Allah, aiming for salvation. (As stated in Al-Mirqat) 3 His statement: “friend” – scholars differ on defining a friend of Allah. The theologians say a friend is one who holds correct belief based on evidence and performs lawful deeds. This is supported by some eminent scholars who said: “If scholars are not friends of Allah, then Allah has no friends.” Al-Ghazali said a friend is one granted insight into some unseen matters without being tasked with reforming people. Both views have issues, as most friends of Allah, especially among the righteous predecessors, showed no miracles or unveiled states, unlike some later generations. The closest definition is Al-Qushayri’s: a friend is either a “protected” one, whom Allah preserves and guards continuously, or an “active” one, who persistently worships and obeys Allah without interspersing disobedience. Both qualities are conditions for friendship. His words suggest that “or” indicates variety, hinting at the attracted wayfarer (murad) in the first and the wayfaring seeker (murid) in the second, as Allah indicated: Allah chooses for Himself whom He wills and guides to Himself those who turn to Him (Ash-Shura: 13). (As stated in Al-Mirqat) 4 His statement: “from every dark and dusty trial” means being free from every difficult issue or severe affliction. Al-Tayyibi said: It is a metaphor for the humility of their dwellings, which are dark and dusty due to lacking means for illumination or cleanliness. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

Shaddad ibn Aws (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that he wept, and it was said to him: “What makes you weep?” He replied: “Something I heard from the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), which I recalled, and it made me weep. I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: ‘I fear for my nation polytheism and hidden desires.’ I said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, will your nation commit polytheism after you?’ He said: ‘Yes, but they will not worship the sun, moon, stone, or idol. Rather, they will show off in their deeds, and the hidden desire is that one of them, while fasting, encounters a desire 1 among his desires and abandons his fast.’” [Narrated by Ahmad and Al-Bayhaqi in Shu‘ab al-Iman]

Notes /
English notes

1 His statement: “encounters a desire among his desires” refers to things like eating, intimacy, or similar. Al-Tayyibi mentioned this. The clearer meaning is that the hidden desire is a rare, specific desire among his inclinations, which he naturally leans toward without considering its opposition to the Shariah, as Allah said: And do not invalidate your deeds (Muhammad: 33). A voluntary act becomes obligatory once begun and must be completed. His statement: “abandons his fast” means it is forbidden without a compelling necessity. Al-Tayyibi said: If a person is engaged in an act of obedience to Allah and a desire of his soul arises, preferring his soul over Allah, he follows his whims, leading to ruin and destruction. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

Notes /
English notes

1 His statement: “Allah, Exalted is He, said: I am the most independent of partners from polytheism” – Imam Hujjat al-Islam said: Showing off has four levels. The first, the most severe, is when the person’s intent is not reward at all, like one who prays among people but would not pray alone, perhaps even praying without purification. This is purely for showing off, detested by Allah. The second is when he intends reward but weakly, such that he would not act in solitude, and the intent for reward does not drive the act, but showing off does. This intent does not negate detestation. The third is when the intent for reward and showing off are equal, such that neither alone would prompt the act, but together they do. Apparent narrations suggest neither cancels the other. The fourth is when people’s awareness enhances his zeal, but he would not abandon worship without it, nor would showing off alone prompt him. We believe, and Allah knows best, this does not nullify the reward entirely but reduces it, or he is punished for the extent of showing off and rewarded for the extent of sincerity. The statement “I am the most independent of partners” applies when the intents are equal or showing off prevails. (As stated in Al-Mirqat) 2 His statement: “associating anyone with Me” refers to created beings. Intending paradise or its benefits does not harm, as they are among Allah’s pleasures. The highest state is to worship without greed for paradise or fear of hell, though some mystics consider this disbelief. The precise view is that if one would not worship Allah without paradise or hell, he is a disbeliever, as Allah deserves worship for Himself. Thus, Suhaib was praised: “What an excellent servant Suhaib is; even if he did not fear Allah, he would not disobey Him.” (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

1 His statement: “Whoever seeks reputation” – Sheikh Abu Hamid said: Showing off is derived from sight, and reputation from hearing. The essence of showing off is seeking status in people’s hearts by displaying praiseworthy traits. The definition of showing off is displaying worship as obedience to Allah. The one showing off is the worshipper, those shown off to are people, the means of showing off are virtuous traits, and showing off is the intent to display them. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

But whoever’s intention is to seek the world, Allah places poverty before his eyes, scatters his affairs, and he gets only what was decreed for him.” [Narrated by At-Tirmidhi, and narrated by Ahmad and Ad-Darimi from Aban from Zaid ibn Thabit]

Notes /
English notes

1 His statement: “due to some desiring others” – the summary is that they are not among those who love or hate for Allah’s sake. Rather, their affairs are tied to corrupt aims and futile intentions. Sometimes they desire people for their own purposes, showing friendship, and sometimes they dislike people for reasons, showing enmity. The essence is that people’s love or enmity is irrelevant, as it is based on their desires and whims. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

Notes /
English notes

1 His statement: “Indeed, everything has a zeal” – its explanation is that a person engages in matters with great eagerness and intense effort initially, followed by a decline. If he is moderate, cautious of excess and neglect, and follows the straight path, hope for him to be among the successful and perfected. But if he pursues excess to the point of being pointed at with fingers, do not regard or rely on him, for he may be among the ruined. However, do not assume he is among the losers, but do not hope for him as you would the moderate. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “It is enough evil for a man 1 to be pointed at with fingers in religion or worldly matters, except for whom Allah protects.” [Narrated by Al-Bayhaqi in Shu‘ab al-Iman]

Notes /
English notes

1 His statement: “It is enough evil for a man to be pointed at with fingers” – Al-Tayyibi explained it most eloquently, saying: The desire for leadership and fame in people’s hearts is among the soul’s greatest pitfalls and traps. It afflicts scholars, worshippers, and those striving for the Hereafter. Even if they subdue their souls, abstain from desires and doubts, and compel themselves to various acts of worship, their souls fail to seek overt sins of the limbs. Instead, they seek respite in displaying good and showcasing knowledge and deeds, finding relief from the struggle’s hardship in gaining people’s approval, not content with Allah’s knowledge alone. They rejoice in people’s praise, not sufficing with Allah’s praise, loving their admiration, service, and prominence in gatherings. The soul finds in this the greatest pleasure and sweetest desire, thinking it lives for Allah and His worship, when it lives for these hidden desires that only discerning minds perceive. Such a person is registered with Allah as a hypocrite, though he thinks he is among His close servants. This is a soul’s trap from which only the truthful and sincere are safe. Hence, it is said: The last thing to leave the hearts of the truthful is the love of leadership, the greatest snare of devils. Thus, the praised becomes the disgraced, except those whom Allah elevates by spreading His religion without their contrivance, like the Prophets, Messengers, Rightly Guided Caliphs, verified scholars, and righteous predecessors. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

Notes /
English notes

1 His statement: “a good deed” clarifies it. It is known that there is no good in a deed done for showing off, so his deed is sincere. Al-Muzhir said: It means, inform us about one who does a righteous deed for Allah, not for people, and they praise him – does this nullify his reward? He said: “That is the immediate glad tidings of the believer,” meaning he is not showing off in that deed, so Allah grants him two rewards: in this world, people’s praise, and in the Hereafter, what is prepared for him. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

You have two rewards: the reward of secrecy and the reward of openness.” [Narrated by At-Tirmidhi]

Notes /
English notes

1 His statement: “I was pleased with the state” – the clearer meaning is that his pleasure aligns with natural disposition and Shariah, as he is pleased that someone saw him in a good state and dislikes being seen in a bad one, without intending to show off or seek reputation. This is like the narration from Abu Musa by At-Tabarani: “Whoever is pleased with his good deed and displeased with his bad deed is a believer.” Allah said: Say: In the bounty of Allah and His mercy, let them rejoice; it is better than what they amass (Yunus: 58). A believer rejoices in being enabled to do good deeds, unlike others who rejoice in amassing wealth. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
