Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Indeed 1, Allah is Gentle and loves gentleness, and He grants through gentleness what He does not grant through harshness or anything else.” [Narrated by Muslim] In another narration, he said to Aishah: “Adhere to gentleness and beware of harshness and obscenity. Gentleness does not exist in anything except that it adorns it, and it is not removed from anything except that it disgraces it.”

Notes /
English notes

1 His statement: “Indeed, Allah is Gentle”: This means He is kind to His servants, intending ease for them, not tasking them beyond their capacity or burdening them with what they cannot bear. It is obligatory for servants to be gentle with one another, acting with gentleness and kindness in seeking sustenance and other matters, and avoiding harshness. Then, he indicated the use of gentleness in seeking sustenance and achieving goals, encouraging it by saying: “And He grants through gentleness what He does not grant through harshness.” He favored it as it is more conducive to achieving the desired outcome and more successful in reaching the goal. He then generalized, indicating its superiority over all other means by saying: “Or anything else,” meaning other than gentleness. It is also possible that “anything else” refers to harshness, meaning He does not grant through other means as He does through gentleness, and the ruling is not exclusive to harshness. This is the understanding derived from their explanation. (As stated in Al-Lama’at)

In Al-Mirqat, it is said: Al-Qadi stated that it is not permissible to use “Gentle” as a name for Allah, as it is not among the well-established names, nor was it used with the intention of being a name. Rather, it was mentioned to introduce the ruling that follows, as if to say: He is the One who is gentle with His servants in their affairs, granting them through gentleness what He does not grant through other means. Al-Turbishti said: Neither “Physician” nor “Gentle” exists among Allah’s names, so it is not permissible to say in supplication, “O Physician” or “O Gentle.” In Al-Khazin and Al-Madarik, it is said: Allah’s names are divinely ordained, not conventional. This is supported by the permissibility of saying “O Generous” but not “O Munificent,” and saying “O Wise” but not “O Physician.”

Notes /
English notes

1 His statement: “Modesty brings nothing but goodness”: Al-Tayyibi said: Some may find this Hadith problematic, as modesty might hinder certain rights, such as enjoining good, forbidding evil, or seeking knowledge. The response is that this is not true modesty but rather weakness and cowardice, called modesty only linguistically. True modesty in Shari’ah is a characteristic that prompts one to avoid what is religiously blameworthy. The correct understanding is that modesty, in its essence, is the soul’s restraint from committing what is blameworthy by nature or Shari’ah. However, praiseworthy modesty in Shari’ah pertains to avoiding what is forbidden, disliked, or less preferable. The clearer response, as mentioned in some commentaries, is that this generality, modesty being entirely good, is specific to modesty that aligns with Allah’s pleasure. Reflect on this. (As stated in Al-Lama’at)

If you fear not the consequences of nights, nor feel shame, then do as you wish.

By Allah, there is no good in life or in the world when modesty is gone.

An-Nawawi preferred that the command is for permissibility, meaning: If you intend to do something and do not feel shame before Allah and people, then do it; otherwise, refrain. The essence is that if you feel no shame in doing something, it indicates its permissibility. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

Notes /
English notes

1 His statement: “Among what people have acquired from the words of the earlier prophethood”: “People” is in the nominative case, and “from” indicates partitivity. The meaning is that among the sayings of the people of earlier prophethood, previous prophets and messengers, it is attributed to them to indicate it stems from revelation. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

2 His statement: “Then do as you wish”: The deterrent from what is improper is modesty. If modesty is absent, everything improper may occur. The command here is either a statement or a command for warning. It is cited:

An-Nawwas ibn Sim’an (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: I asked the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) about righteousness and sin. He said: “Righteousness 1 is good character, and sin 2 is what troubles your heart and you dislike for people to know about.” [Narrated by Muslim]

Notes /
English notes

1 His statement: “Righteousness is good character”: Good character is explained as enduring harm, restraining anger, being cheerful, and speaking kindly, all of which are closely related in meaning. Some scholars said good character is treating people well, recognizing they are subject to divine decree, and that their character, creation, sustenance, and lifespan are predetermined. Thus, one treats them kindly as much as possible, so they feel safe and love him willingly. With the Creator, it is to engage in all obligations and supererogatory acts, performing virtuous deeds, knowing that one’s efforts are deficient and require excuse, while what comes from Allah is perfect, warranting gratitude. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

2 His statement: “Sin is what troubles your heart”: It means what causes hesitation, unsettles the heart with doubt or fear of it being a sin, and you dislike people knowing about it. This is because the soul naturally desires people to know of its good deeds. If it dislikes people knowing of an act, it is not something that draws one closer to Allah or is permitted by Shari’ah, indicating it is not good or righteous, but rather a sin and evil. The comprehensive answer is that a matter is either deemed good or evil by intellect, or one hesitates between the two. The former is righteousness, and anything else is sin. This establishes a general rule for matters whose goodness or evil is not definitively known from Shari’ah, whether in theoretical or practical matters. (As stated in Al-Mirqat) In Al-Lama’at, it is said: “Sin is what troubles your heart”: It means what affects it, causing hesitation and unease, indicating some degree of sin or dislike. This is the meaning of “Consult your heart.” This applies to one whose heart Allah has enlightened, in matters without clear textual evidence or scholarly consensus, or where texts conflict and opinions differ, so one chooses based on the heart’s guidance.

Ja’far ibn Muhammad narrated from his father: When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) looked in the mirror, he said 1: “Praise be to Allah who perfected my form and my character, and adorned in me what disgraced others.” [Narrated by Al-Bayhaqi in Shu’ab al-Iman]

Notes /
English notes

1 His statement: “When he looked in the mirror, he said: Praise be to Allah, etc.”: Al-Tayyibi said: This indicates the desirability of looking in the mirror and giving praise for good form and character, as they are blessings from Allah requiring gratitude. The outward beauty is evident through the mirror, but what is the meaning of mentioning character and conduct, which are internal? It can be said that the outward is an indication of the inward, or it is mentioned by association. If asked whether others may follow this and say this praise, or if it is specific to him, and others should use the supplication in the next Hadith, the response is: Every believer may say this, as humans are created in the best form, and a believer with faith undoubtedly has upright character and religion. Above every knowledgeable person is One All-Knowing. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

Notes /
English notes

1 His statement: “The believers are gentle and soft, etc.”: In Sharh as-Sunnah, the meaning is that the believer is highly submissive to the Lawgiver in His commands and prohibitions. The statement “If made to kneel on a rock, it kneels” indicates enduring hardships, as kneeling on a rock is difficult. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

When the man persisted, Abu Bakr responded with some of his words. The Prophet (ﷺ) became angry and stood up. Abu Bakr followed him and said: “O Messenger of Allah! He was insulting me while you were sitting, but when I responded with some of his words, you became angry and stood up?” He said: “An angel was with you, responding on your behalf. When you responded with some of his words, Satan appeared.” Then he said: “O Abu Bakr, three things are all true: No servant is wronged and overlooks it for Allah’s sake except that Allah strengthens his support; no man opens the door of giving, seeking connection, except that Allah increases his abundance; and no man opens the door of asking, seeking abundance, except that Allah increases his poverty.” [Narrated by Ahmad]

Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “The one 1 who mixes with people and endures their harm is better than the one who does not mix with them and does not endure their harm.” [Narrated by At-Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah]

Notes /
English notes

1 His statement: “The one who mixes with people, etc.”: This supports those who prefer mixing over isolation. There is a well-known disagreement on this. Al-Shafi’i and most scholars hold that mixing is better due to its benefits, such as gaining knowledge, witnessing Islamic rituals, increasing the ranks of Muslims, delivering goodness, cooperating in righteousness and piety, and aiding the needy. This is especially emphasized for a scholar or ascetic. Many Tabi’in, including Sa’id ibn al-Musayyib, Ash-Sha’bi, Ibn Abi Layla, Hisham ibn Urwah, Ibn Shubrumah, Shurayh, Sharik ibn Abdullah, Ibn Uyaynah, Abdullah ibn al-Mubarak, Ahmad ibn Hanbal, and others, favored mixing. Some groups prefer isolation. Al-Kirmani, in his commentary on Bukhari, said: In our time, isolation is preferable due to the rarity of gatherings free from sins. Al-Badr al-Ayni agreed, stating that mixing in this era brings only harm. The majority responded to Hadiths about isolation by saying they apply to times of strife and war, or to those from whom people are not safe or who do not endure others. Prophets, most companions, Tabi’in, scholars, and ascetics mixed with people, gaining benefits like attending Friday prayers, congregational prayers, funerals, visiting the sick, and circles of remembrance. (As stated in Al-Mirqat, Injah al-Hajah, Sharh al-Ihya, and Al-Ihya)
