English notes

1 His statement: “rather, he would smile”: That is, usually. He might laugh, but not to the extent mentioned. As stated in Al-Mirqat. In Al-Alamgiriyyah: The jurist said, “It is recommended for a man to be amicable with people. His speech should be gentle, and his face cheerful with the righteous and the sinful, the Sunni and the innovator, without flattery or speaking in a way that suggests approval of their beliefs.” As stated in As-Sirajiyyah.

Jabir ibn Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: “The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) would not rise 1 from his prayer place where he prayed Subh until the sun rose. When 2 the sun rose, he would stand, and they would converse, mentioning matters of the Jahiliyyah, laughing while he smiled.” [Narrated by Muslim]

In a narration by At-Tirmidhi: “They would recite poetry 3.”

Notes /
English notes

1 His statement: “would not rise from his prayer place, etc.”: An-Nawawi said: “This indicates the desirability of remembrance after Subh and remaining in the prayer place unless there is an excuse.” Qadi Iyad said: “The early Muslims adhered to this Sunnah, limiting themselves to remembrance and supplication until the sun rose.” As stated in Al-Mirqat.

2 His statement: “When the sun rose, he would stand”: That is, for the Ishraq prayer, which is the beginning of the Duha prayer. As stated in Al-Mirqat.

3 His statement: “They would recite poetry”: It is known that in his noble gathering, only lofty poetry containing monotheism, encouragement, and admonition was recited. As stated in Al-Mirqat.

Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: “Ibn Umar was asked, ‘Did the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) laugh?’ He said, 1 ‘Yes, and the faith in their hearts was greater than a mountain.’ Bilal ibn Sa‘d said: ‘I saw them hasten between the rows, and some would laugh with others, but when 2 night came, they were like monks.’” [Narrated in Sharh as-Sunnah]

Notes /
English notes

1 His statement: “He said, ‘Yes, and the faith in their hearts was greater than a mountain’”: They were at the peak of dignity and steadfastness in adhering to the rules of religious etiquette, and at the utmost in observing noble morals, not exceeding the bounds of religious matters in laughter or otherwise. At-Tayyibi said: “This is a response affirming the premise, meaning, yes, they laughed, but not to the extent that kills hearts or shakes faith, as it is reported that excessive laughter deadens the heart.” As stated in Al-Mirqat.

2 His statement: “but when night came, they were like monks”: The meaning is that this was their state during the day in the gatherings of their righteous companions. At night, they were like monks, meaning outwardly laughing but inwardly weeping. Their bodies were with the creation, but their spirits were with the divine; present with people in body, absent from them in heart, close outwardly to near and far, yet inwardly detached, walking the path in humble attire, rich in their complete poverty in this world. May Allah be pleased with them and benefit us with the blessings of what they manifested. As stated in Al-Mirqat.
