Notes / الحواشي
English notes

1 His statement: “Cursed on the tongue of Muhammad (ﷺ) is the one who sits in the middle of a circle”: This is interpreted in two ways. First, it refers to someone who comes to a group’s circle, steps over their necks, and sits in the middle rather than where the seating ends. Second, it refers to sitting in the center of the circle, obstructing faces and blocking some from others, causing harm. At-Turbishti said: “It refers, and Allah knows best, to the shameless person who makes himself an object of ridicule to be a laughingstock among people, or those who act similarly, seeking fame through deception or trickery.” As stated in Al-Mirqat.

Notes / الحواشي
English notes

1 His statement: “This is a manner of lying that Allah dislikes”: Because placing the chest and face, which are among the noblest parts, on the ground is degrading outside of prostration, or this manner of lying resembles the posture of sodomy, and resembling them is blameworthy. As stated in Al-Mirqat. It is said in Al-Alamgiriyyah: “If one is full and fears stomach pain, there is no issue with placing a pillow under the stomach and sleeping on it.” I say: This Hadith does not contradict it, as Al-Qari (may Allah have mercy on him) said in Al-Mirqat: “Perhaps his excuse was not apparent to him, or because it is possible to lie on the thighs to relieve pain without extending the legs.”

Ali al-Qari (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “The reconciliation between the Hadiths of Jabir and Abbad is that placing one leg over the other can be of two types: one where both legs are extended, one over the other, and there is no issue with this, as it does not expose the private parts in this posture; or where one leg is raised with the other placed over the raised knee, and in this case, if there is no exposure of the private parts, such as wearing trousers or having a long garment or hem, it is permissible, otherwise not. Some of our scholars said: The prohibition was stated in absolute terms because wearing a lower garment was prevalent among them.”

Some of the family of Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with them) narrated: “The bedding 1 of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was similar to what is placed in his grave, and the mosque 2 was at his head.” [Narrated by Abu Dawud]

Notes / الحواشي
English notes

1 His statement: “The bedding of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was similar to what is placed in his grave”: That is, what he spread for sleeping was close to what is placed in his grave, as is known to some people. The shift from past to present tense may describe the state, meaning it was something light, neither long nor wide. It is not permissible for others to place under the deceased in the grave a mat, pillow, or similar items. Perhaps the reason is that it is wasting wealth without necessity, so the dislike is prohibitive. Hence, it is expressed as “not permissible.” For this reason, Ibn Abbas disliked placing anything under the deceased, as narrated by At-Tirmidhi from Abu Musa: “Do not place anything between me and the earth.” What is narrated about a velvet cloth being placed in his grave is said to be because Madinah’s soil was salty. It is also said that Abbas and Ali disputed over it, so Shaqran spread it beneath him to end the dispute. It is also said he wore and spread it, and Shaqran said, “By Allah, no one will wear it after you,” and placed it in the grave. As cited from Al-Mirqat and Radd al-Muhtar.

2 His statement: “and the mosque was at his head”: With a kasrah on the jim, meaning when he slept, his head was toward the mosque. In one version, with a fathah on the jim, meaning his prayer place or mat was at his head. As stated in Al-Mirqat.

Abu Usayd al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that he heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say, as he was leaving the mosque and men mixed with women on the path, to the women: “Stay back, for it is not for you to walk in the middle of the path. Keep to the sides of the path.” So a woman would cling to the wall until her garment would catch on it. [Narrated by Abu Dawud and Al-Bayhaqi in Shu‘ab al-Iman]
