Handshaking, Embracing, and Kissing
Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: “I said to Anas, ‘Was handshaking practiced among the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)?’ He said, ‘Yes.’ 1” [Narrated by Bukhari]
Notes /
1 His statement: “He said, ‘Yes’”: An-Nawawi said: “Handshaking is a Sunnah by consensus in general terms, but an exception is made for shaking hands with an unrelated woman or a handsome beardless youth.” As stated in Umdat al-Qari. It is said in At-Ta‘liq al-Mumajjad, citing the author of Al-Hidayah and others: “It is not permissible to shake hands with women if they are desirable, but if she is an elderly woman who is not desirable or the man is an elderly senior, there is no issue, as there is no fear of temptation.”
Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: “A man said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, when one of us meets his brother or friend, should he bow 1 to him?’ He said, ‘No.’ He said, ‘Should he embrace him or kiss him?’ He said, ‘No.’ He said, ‘Should he take his hand and shake it?’ He said, ‘Yes.’” [Narrated by At-Tirmidhi]
At-Tahawi said in Sharh Ma‘ani al-Athar: “Some followed this and disliked embracing, including Abu Hanifah and Muhammad (may Allah have mercy on them). Others disagreed and saw no issue with it, including Abu Yusuf (may Allah have mercy on him). The Companions of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to embrace, indicating that the narration permitting embracing is later than the one prohibiting it, and this is what we follow.”

1 His statement: “Should he bow to him? He said, ‘No’”: It is said in Al-Urf ash-Shadhi: “Bowing upon meeting is prohibitively disliked, as stated in the Hanafi fatwas.”

Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “The completion of visiting the sick is that one of you places his hand on his forehead or hand and asks how he is, and the completion of your greetings among yourselves is handshaking.” [Narrated by Ahmad and At-Tirmidhi]
Al-Bara ibn Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “No two Muslims meet and shake hands 1 except that their sins are forgiven before they part.” [Narrated by Ahmad, At-Tirmidhi, and Ibn Majah]
In a narration by Abu Dawud: “When two Muslims meet, shake hands, praise Allah, and seek His forgiveness, their sins are forgiven.”
Notes /
1 His statement: “shake hands except that their sins are forgiven, etc.”: It is said in Ad-Durr al-Mukhtar: “Handshaking is permissible, as it is an ancient, widely transmitted Sunnah, based on the statement: ‘Whoever shakes hands with his Muslim brother and moves his hand, his sins fall away.’ The author’s general statement, following Ad-Durar, Al-Kanz, Al-Wiqayah, An-Niqayah, Al-Majma‘, Al-Multaqa, and others, indicates its permissibility in absolute terms, even after the afternoon prayer. Their statement that it is an innovation means a permissible, good innovation, as An-Nawawi indicated in Adhkar and others elsewhere. This reconciles what is cited from him in the commentary of Al-Majma‘ that it is not established after the morning and afternoon prayers. Reflect on this. In Al-Mirqat, An-Nawawi said: ‘Know that handshaking is a Sunnah and recommended at every meeting. What people practice after the morning and afternoon prayers has no basis in the Shari‘ah in this specific manner, but there is no issue with it, as the basis of handshaking is a Sunnah. Their adherence to it in some cases and negligence in many others does not remove that instance from being part of the Sunnah-based handshaking, and it is a permissible innovation.’ There is some contradiction in the Imam’s words, as performing a Sunnah at certain times is not called an innovation, yet the people’s practice at these times is not in the manner of the recommended Sunnah, as the place of the legislated handshaking is at the beginning of the meeting. Sometimes a group meets without handshaking, converses, and discusses knowledge or other matters for a long time, then shakes hands after praying. How is this the legislated Sunnah? For this reason, some of our scholars explicitly stated that it is disliked in that case and is a blameworthy innovation. However, if someone enters the mosque while people are praying or about to start, and shakes hands with them after finishing, provided the greeting precedes the handshake, this is undoubtedly part of the legislated handshaking. Even so, if a Muslim extends his hand for a handshake, one should not withdraw, as the harm from doing so exceeds the etiquette. In sum, initiating a handshake in that manner is disliked, but reciprocating is not, though it may involve some cooperation in innovation. Allah knows best.”

Ash-Sha‘bi narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) met Ja‘far ibn Abi Talib, embraced him 1, and kissed 2 him between his eyes. [Narrated by Abu Dawud and Al-Bayhaqi in Shu‘ab al-Iman, mursal]
In some copies of Al-Masabih and in Sharh as-Sunnah, it is narrated from Al-Bayadi, connected.
Notes /
1 His statement: “embraced him and kissed him between his eyes”: It is said in Al-Hidayah: “It is disliked for a man to kiss another man’s mouth, hand, or any part of him, or to embrace him.” At-Tahawi mentioned that this is the view of Abu Hanifah and Muhammad, while Abu Yusuf said there is no issue with kissing or embracing, based on the narration that he embraced Ja‘far when he returned from Abyssinia and kissed him between his eyes. They [Abu Hanifah and Muhammad] cite the narration prohibiting mukamu‘ah (embracing) and muka‘amah (kissing). The narration [permitting it] is understood to be before the prohibition. They said the disagreement concerns embracing in a single garment, but if one is wearing a shirt or robe, there is no issue by consensus, and this is the correct view. In Al-‘Inayah, Shaykh Abu Mansur reconciled the narrations, saying: “The disliked embracing is that done with desire, which the author expressed as ‘in a single garment,’ as it leads to it. As for embracing out of kindness and honor while wearing a shirt, there is no issue.” As stated in Radd al-Muhtar.
2 His statement: “kissed him between his eyes”: It is said in Ad-Durr al-Mukhtar: “Kissing is of five types: a kiss of affection for a child on the cheek, a kiss of mercy for parents on the head, a kiss of compassion for a brother on the forehead, a kiss of desire for one’s wife or slave girl on the mouth, and a kiss of greeting for believers on the hand. Some added a kiss of devotion for the Black Stone.” As noted in Jawharah. I say: It was mentioned earlier in the chapter on Hajj regarding kissing the threshold of the Ka‘bah. In Al-Qunyah, in the chapter on matters related to graves: “Kissing the Qur’an is said to be an innovation, but it is narrated that Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) would take the Qur’an every morning, kiss it, and say, ‘The covenant of my Lord and the proclamation of my Lord, the Exalted.’ Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) would kiss the Qur’an and wipe it on his face.”

Usaid ibn Hudair (may Allah be pleased with him), a man from the Ansar, narrated: “While he was speaking to people, being humorous and making them laugh, the Prophet (ﷺ) poked him in his side with a stick. He said, ‘Let me retaliate.’ The Prophet said, ‘Retaliate.’ He said, ‘You have a shirt on, and I do not.’ The Prophet (ﷺ) lifted his shirt, and he embraced him and began kissing his side, saying, ‘This is all I wanted, O Messenger of Allah.’” [Narrated by Abu Dawud]
