Trade
Agriculture
Craftsmanship
Some scholars consider trade superior to farming, but the majority hold that agriculture is better due to its widespread benefit for humanity and animals alike. This is mentioned in Al-Ikhtiyar and Al-Wajeez by Al-Kurdi, as cited in Al-'Alamgiriyyah. Imam Nawawi stated that the hadith in Bukhari clearly favors farming and craftsmanship since they involve manual labor, though farming is superior due to its universal benefit. ('Umdat Al-Qari)

1 The statement: "From the labor of his hands" – The best means of earning are:
Rafi' ibn Khadij (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that it was asked: "O Messenger of Allah, what is the purest form of earning?" He replied: "A man’s work with his hands and every honest sale." [Narrated by Ahmad]

2 “Sometimes one yielded…”: Rafi‘ explains the prohibition due to risk, where one plot yields and another does not, benefiting one party fully while the other loses entirely. [From Al-Marqah].
Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked about the wages for copying the Qur’an. He replied: "There is no harm in it, for they are merely illustrators, and they eat from the labor of their hands." [Narrated by Razin]
Notes /
1 The statement: "He was asked about wages for copying the Qur’an" – The ruling is that any work not exclusively tied to worship is permissible if it is a defined task. However, the Prophet (ﷺ) advised: "Recite the Qur’an but do not use it as a means of earning." (Narrated by 'Uthman ibn Abi Al-'As). Some scholars permit hiring teachers for Qur’an instruction due to the decline in religious commitment, as neglecting it may lead to the loss of Qur’anic preservation. (Al-Hidayah and Al-'Alamgiriyyah).

Abu Bakr ibn Abi Maryam narrated that Miqdam ibn Ma'dikarib had a servant who sold milk, and he would collect the earnings. When asked: "Glory to Allah! Do you sell milk and take its price?" he replied: "Yes, and there is no harm in it. I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: 'A time will come upon people when nothing will benefit them except dinars and dirhams.'" [Narrated by Ahmad]
Nafi' narrated: "I used to trade with Syria and Egypt, then I began trading with Iraq. I visited Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) and said: 'O Mother of the Believers, I used to trade with Syria, but now I trade with Iraq.' She replied: 'Do not do that. What is wrong with your previous trade? I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: "When Allah provides sustenance to someone from a certain means, they should not abandon it unless it changes or becomes unfavorable."'" (Al-Mu'minun 23:51) And He said: 'O you who believe, eat from the good things We have provided for you.' (Al-Baqarah 2:172)" He then mentioned a man who travels widely, disheveled and dusty, raising his hands to the sky, saying: "O Lord! O Lord!" Then he put his fingers in his ears and said: "May they be deaf if I did not hear the Prophet (ﷺ) say this!" [Narrated by Ahmad and Al-Bayhaqi in Shu'ab Al-Iman and said: Its chain is weak]
Notes /
1 The statement: "Allah will not accept his prayers" means that the prayer is valid but unrewarded, similar to praying in usurped land. This is because Allah says: "Allah only accepts from the righteous." (Al-Ma'idah 5:27) Reward depends on acceptance, while validity depends on fulfilling conditions. Piety is not a condition for the validity of worship according to Ahlus-Sunnah. (Al-Mirqat)

An-Nu'man ibn Bashir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "The halal is clear, and the haram is clear. Between them are doubtful matters that many people do not know. Whoever avoids doubtful matters safeguards his religion and honor. But whoever indulges in doubtful matters falls into haram, like a shepherd grazing near a restricted zone, soon he will enter it. Every king has a restricted zone, and Allah’s restricted zone on His earth is His prohibitions. Indeed, in the body is a piece of flesh; if it is sound, the whole body is sound, and if it is corrupt, the whole body is corrupt. Indeed, it is the heart." [Agreed upon]
Notes /
1 The statement: "Between them are doubtful matters" – This ruling is based on precaution. However, the default principle in Islamic law is permissibility (ibahah), the view of the majority of Hanafis and Shafi'is. Evidence for this is found in Musallam Ath-Thubut and At-Tawdih. Scholars differ on doubtful matters: some say they are prohibited (rejected), others say they require abstention (similar to pre-revelation rulings). The permissibility principle is established by Quranic texts, hadiths, and scholarly consensus, as elaborated in Rad Al-Muhtar. (Tansiq An-Nizam)

Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated: Abu Bakr had a servant who collected taxes for him, and he would eat from those earnings. One day the servant brought something, and Abu Bakr ate from it. The servant asked: "Do you know what this is?" Abu Bakr asked: "What is it?" The servant replied: "In pre-Islamic times, I pretended to foretell for a man (though I knew nothing of divination) and deceived him. Later he met me and gave me this for that deception - this is what you just ate." Abu Bakr immediately inserted his finger into his throat and vomited everything in his stomach. [Narrated by Bukhari]
(A similar narration about 'Umar drinking milk appears in the Book of Zakat)
Notes /
1 The statement: "He vomited everything" - Ibn al-Malik deduced that if one eats haram knowingly or unknowingly then realizes it, they must vomit it immediately. Ali al-Qari considered this an act of extreme piety (wara'). [Al-Mirqat]

Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) prohibited the price of cats and dogs except hunting dogs. [Narrated by Nasa'i with a good chain]
Notes /
1 "Prohibited the price of cats" - This is a discouragement (tanzih), not strict prohibition. Most scholars permit selling cats. [Al-Luma'at]
1 The statement: He ordered Abu Taibah to perform cupping on her. For this reason, it is said in Al-Hidayah: It is permissible for a doctor to look at the affected area of her body out of necessity, but it is preferable to teach a woman to treat her. If they cannot, every part of her body should be covered except the affected area. 2 The statement: I think, etc. This is Jabir’s statement, indicating that the need was not absolutely necessary; otherwise, it would be permissible for a non-relative to look at her entire body for treatment. This is stated by At-Tayyibi.
2 "And dogs" - This supports Abu Hanifa's view permitting dog sales as the prohibition is interpreted as dislike (karahah) rather than full prohibition (haram). [Al-Mirqat]
3 "Except hunting dogs" - This exception confirms the hadith's authenticity. The general prohibition is understood to apply to wild/untrainable dogs. [Al-Jawhar an-Naqi]
4 "Good chain" - As verified in Al-Jawhar an-Naqi

Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) forbade the price of dogs except trained dogs. [Narrated by Ahmad and Nasa'i]
Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: "The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) permitted the price of hunting dogs." [Narrated by Imam Abu Hanifa with a strong chain not including Al-Kindi]
Notes /
1 "Permitted" - This indicates full permissibility. Initially, all dogs were ordered killed, making their sale impermissible. Later, Allah permitted keeping certain dogs (as in Quran 5:4), establishing their lawful sale like donkeys (whose meat is prohibited but usage permitted). [Sharh Ma'ani al-Athar] 2 "Strong chain" - As noted in Fath al-Qadir and 'Uqud al-Jawahir
'Amr ibn Shu'ayb narrated from his father from his grandfather Abdullah ibn 'Amr that the Prophet (ﷺ) ruled the compensation for a killed hunting dog as forty dirhams, and for a herding dog as a ram. [Narrated by Tahawi]

Az-Zuhri said: "If a trained dog is killed, its value is assessed and paid by the killer." [Narrated by Tahawi]
Ibrahim said: "There is no harm in selling hunting dogs." [Narrated by As-Sahawi]
Abdullah ibn 'Amr ibn al-'As (may Allah be pleased with him) ruled the compensation for a hunting dog as forty dirhams. [Narrated by Bukhari in his Tarikh, Sa'id ibn Mansur, and Bayhaqi]
Another version adds: "The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) prohibited the price of dogs, earnings of prostitutes, and payments to fortune-tellers."
Bukhari's version states: "The Prophet (ﷺ) prohibited the price of blood, price of dogs, earnings from prostitution, cursed the one who consumes interest and the one who pays it, the tattooist and the tattooed, and image-makers."
Sharh as-Sunnah adds: "The Prophet (ﷺ) prohibited earnings from musical instruments."
Notes /
1 "Prohibited the price of dogs" - This is a discouragement, not strict prohibition, due to the lowly nature of such trade. [Al-Mirqat] 2 "Earnings of prostitutes and fortune-tellers" - These are among the foulest earnings, including tattoos and conditional payments to singers. [Ad-Durr al-Mukhtar] 3 "Price of blood" - Selling blood is prohibited as it is impure. Some interpret this as discouraging payments to bloodletters. [Al-Mirqat] 4 "Image-makers" - This refers specifically to images of living creatures, as idols were made in such forms. [Al-Mirqat]
Muhayyisa (may Allah be pleased with him) sought the Prophet's (ﷺ) permission to work as a bloodletter, but he forbade him. After persistent requests, the Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Feed your camels and servants from its earnings." [Narrated by Malik, Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud, and Ibn Majah]
The hadith about "a bloodletter's earnings being foul" is either abrogated or refers to moral repugnance rather than legal prohibition.
Conditional payments for bloodletting are disliked (makruh).
Notes /
1 "He forbade him" - This prohibition is discouragement (tanzih) to avoid base earnings and encourage noble work. If it were strictly haram, the Prophet (ﷺ) wouldn't permit feeding slaves from it. [Al-Mirqat] Additional notes from scholars:
The narration from Rafi' ibn Khadij is weaker than Ibn Abbas's permissive narration. [Al-Jawharah and Rad al-Muhtar]
Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: "Abu Taybah performed cupping for the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), who ordered that he be given a saa' of dates and instructed his family to reduce his tax burden." [Agreed upon]
Notes /
1 The statement: "Ordered that he be given a saa'" - This proves the permissibility of cupping and accepting payment for it. ['Umdat al-Qari]
Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that during the Conquest of Makkah, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) declared:
"Allah and His Messenger have prohibited the sale of wine, dead animals, pork, and idols."
Someone asked: "O Messenger of Allah, what about the fat of dead animals? It is used for caulking ships, tanning leather, and as lamp oil."
He replied: "No, it is forbidden." Then he added: "May Allah curse the Jews! When He forbade them its fat, they rendered it (into oil), sold it, and consumed its price." [Agreed upon]
Darqutni narrated from Ibn Abbas:
"The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) only prohibited the meat of dead animals - their skins, hair, and wool are permissible." Its chain includes Abdul-Jabbar ibn Muslim, whom Ibn Hibban deemed reliable, making the hadith at least hasan.
Darqutni also narrated from Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her):
"I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: 'There is no harm in using the skin of a dead animal after tanning, nor its wool, hair, or horns after washing.'" Its chain includes Yusuf ibn Abi As-Safar, a scribe of Al-Awza'i.
Notes /
1 "Dead animals" - Only their consumption is prohibited, not using their tanned hides - contrary to Malik's view. Hair, horns, bones, and hooves remain pure according to Abu Hanifa and Malik, as they are not "flesh". The Prophet (ﷺ) used an ivory comb (from inedible elephant bone), proving such materials' purity. [At-Tafsirat al-Ahmadiyyah, 'Umdat al-Qari] 2 "It is forbidden" - The prohibition refers to selling, not necessarily all uses. Quranic verses about dead animals specifically address consumption. [Al-Mirqat] 3 "No harm in it" - Sahih hadiths clarify that only the meat is prohibited. Other parts are pure if properly cleaned. [Rad al-Muhtar]
Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:
"May Allah curse the Jews! They were forbidden animal fat, so they rendered it and sold it." [Agreed upon]
Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) said:
"The purest food you eat is from your honest earnings, and your children are part of those earnings." [Narrated by Tirmidhi, Nasa'i, and Ibn Majah]
Abu Dawud's version adds: "Among the purest food a man eats is from his labor, and his child is from his earnings."
Abu Dawud commented: "Hammad ibn Abi Sulayman's addition about cupping earnings is acceptable as supplementary narration from a reliable source."
Notes /
1 "Your children are part of those earnings" - Since they result from marital relations, parents may benefit from children's earnings if needy - otherwise only with their consent. [Al-Mirqat, Al-Hidayah] 2 "Such additions" - Supplementary narrations that don't contradict stronger chains are accepted, as explained by Ibn Hajar in Sharh Nukhbat al-Fikr. [Badhl al-Majhud]

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated:
"The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) cursed ten types of people regarding wine: its presser, the one for whom it is pressed, its drinker, its carrier, the one to whom it is carried, its server, its seller, the one who consumes its price, its buyer, and the one for whom it is bought." [Narrated by Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah]
Notes /
1 "Its carrier" - Abu Hanifa uniquely holds that wages for transporting wine are permissible if not intended for consumption. The hadith refers to those involved in facilitating drinking. [Al-'Urf ash-Shadhi]

Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:

Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:
"Do not sell female singers, do not buy them, do not teach them (music), and their earnings are unlawful. About such matters was revealed: 'And among people are those who purchase idle talk...' (Luqman 31:6)" [Narrated by Ahmad, Tirmidhi, and Ibn Majah]
Tirmidhi noted: "This is a gharib hadith with a weak narrator (Ali ibn Yazid)."
Ibn Majah's version states: "The Prophet (ﷺ) prohibited selling female singers."
Notes /
1 "Do not sell female singers" - The prohibition applies specifically to transactions for musical purposes. Most scholars permit their sale otherwise, considering the hadith weak. The prohibition targets earnings from sinful activities, like selling grapes for wine. [Al-Mirqat] 2 "Their earnings are unlawful" - Only payments directly for singing are forbidden, not general transactions unrelated to music. [Al-Kawkab ad-Durri]
1 “Brings humiliation…”: Some scholars say this implies farming causes humiliation, but it is recommended for its benefit. It was said to prevent Companions from farming and neglecting jihad, risking defeat. Alternatively, it applies near enemies, where farming over jihad leads to humiliation. [From Al-Marqah].
