And the statement of Allah Almighty: "I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me" [2:186]And His statement: "Call upon Me; I will respond to you" (40:60)

1 The statement: "Supplications", An-Nawawi said: Scholars across all regions and eras unanimously agree on the recommendation of supplication, based on the apparent texts of the Qur’an, Sunnah, and traditions of the prophets (Al-Mirqah)2 The statement: "I respond...", The response to supplication means Allah says"Here I am, My servant," at the time of calling, this is granted to every believer. It does not necessarily mean granting the request, as the verse does not mention this. Lovers who call upon Allah without worldly or religious desires are never deprived, even if they seek nothing but Him. Sometimes, Allah delays the response because He loves to hear His servant’s voice, as Yahya ibn Sa‘id reported seeing in a dream: "O Yahya, I love to hear your voice." Other reasons include lacking conditions for acceptance (halal sustenance, sincerity), or because Allah’s favor is tied to His will. The response may also come as: 1) acceptance of the exact request, 2) averting a calamity, or 3) elevating one’s rank in the Hereafter, as in authentic reports. Alternatively, the word "when" may imply partiality (At-Tafsirat al-Ahmadiyyah)

Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Every prophet was granted a supplication that would be answered. Each hastened to use it, but I have reserved mine as intercession for my ummah until the Day of Resurrection. Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "A servant’s supplication is answered as long as he does not ask for sin or severing ties of kinship, and as long as he does not become impatient." It was said: "O Messenger of Allah, what is impatience?" He said: "He says: ‘I have supplicated, I have supplicated, but I have not seen a response,’ so he becomes frustrated and abandons supplication." [Narrated by Muslim]

Notes /
English notes

1 “Seven cubits”: Hanafis say a path’s length and width are like a door’s. “Length” means height, prohibiting building above the height limit. This hadith does not oppose us. At-Tahawi in Mushkil Al-Athar says it applies to new paths; old paths remain as is, per Bukhari. If a path exists among people’s land and they wish to build, they agree on its size; if disputed, it is seven cubits. If an existing path exceeds seven cubits, no one may encroach. Ath-Thawab Al-Hali says seven cubits is not a fixed limit but based on need. [From Arf Ash-Shadhi and Al-Luma‘at].

3 The statement: "As long as he does not become impatient," etc. Al-Nawawi said: "This indicates that one should persist in supplication and not consider the response delayed." Al-Kirmani said: "Here, the condition for the supplication being answered is the absence of haste and refraining from saying, ‘I supplicated but was not answered.’" This is mentioned in ‘Umadat al-Qari. Ali al-Qari said: "The response comes in different forms: either granting exactly what was asked at the desired time, delaying it for a wisdom that necessitates postponement, warding off an equivalent evil, giving something better than what was requested, or storing its reward for a day when the supplicant will be in greater need of it."

1 “No preemption except in a house or orchard”: This indicates preemption is limited to immovable property like lands, houses, and orchards, not movables like goods or animals, per most scholars. [From Al-Marqah].

2 “In all undivided property”: This establishes preemption for partners in undivided property, whether divisible or not. Ash-Shafi‘i says there is no preemption in indivisible property. This hadith’s generality opposes him. Mentioning undivided property does not negate the ruling for others. [From Al-Marqah and Ibn Al-Malik].

English

Malik ibn Yasar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "When you ask Allah, ask Him with the palms of your hands, and do not ask Him with their backs." In the narration of Ibn Abbas: "Ask Allah with the palms of your hands, and do not ask Him with their backs. When you finish, wipe your faces with them." [Narrated by Abu Dawud]

Notes /
English notes

1 The statement: "With the palms of your hands," etc. It is preferable in supplication to extend both hands with a gap between them, without placing one hand over the other. If one is in a state of difficulty or extreme cold, pointing with the index finger suffices in place of extending the hands. Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyyah said: "Supplication is of four types: supplication of desire, supplication of fear, supplication of humility, and silent supplication. In the supplication of desire, one turns the palms upward; in the supplication of fear, one turns the backs of the hands toward the face like one seeking refuge from harm; in the supplication of humility, one folds the little and ring fingers, circles the thumb and middle finger, and points with the index finger. Silent supplication is what one does inwardly." This is mentioned in Majmu’ al-Fatawa, quoting from Sharh al-Sarakhsi for Mukhtasar al-Hakim al-Shahid in the chapter on obligatory prayer. As mentioned in al-‘Alamgiriyyah.

English notes

2 The statement: "The whiteness of his armpits." In another narration: "Level with his shoulders." In yet another narration: "The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) did not raise them beyond this," meaning to the chest, indicating that sometimes he would supplicate with hands raised to the chest, and other times (as in intense situations like seeking rain) he would raise them higher until the whiteness of his armpits or shoulder level became visible. This is mentioned in Mirqat al-Mafatih.

English

Ikrimah reported from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) that he said: "Asking (al-mas'alah) is to raise your hands opposite your shoulders or near them. Seeking forgiveness (al-istighfar) is to point with one finger. Earnest supplication (al-ibtihal) is to stretch both hands fully." In another narration: He said, "Al-ibtihal is like this," and he raised his hands with their backs facing his face. [Narrated by Abu Dawud]

Notes /
English notes

1 The statement: "Point with one finger," etc. It is mentioned in al-'Alamgiriyyah under the chapter of Istisqa (rain-seeking prayer): "During supplication, if one raises his hands toward the sky, it is good. If he leaves that and points with his index finger, it is also good. Similarly, people often raise their hands because the Sunnah in supplication is to extend both hands." This is quoted from al-Mudmarat.

2 “In jest or earnest” means jest outwardly but earnest inwardly, i.e., taking playfully with intent to keep. The stick is an example of a trivial item, indicating that more valuable items are even more prohibited. [From Al-Marqah]. Nail Al-Awtar says this prohibits taking someone’s property in jest or mockery. [From Nail Al-Awtar].

3 The statement: "Wipe his face with them," etc. It is mentioned in al-'Alamgiriyyah: "Wiping the face with the hands after completing the supplication, some scholars consider it insignificant, but many of our teachers have practiced it. This is the correct view, as supported by narrations." This is quoted from al-Ghasiyah.
