بَابُ تَمَنِّي الْمَوْتِ وَذِكْرِهِWishing for Death and Its Remembrance
وَعَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ (رضي الله عنه) قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: «لَا يَتَمَنَّى۱ أَحَدُكُمُ الْمَوْتَ، إِمَّا مُحْسِنًا فَلَعَلَّهُ يَزْدَادُ، وَإِمَّا مُسِيئًا فَلَعَلَّهُ يَسْتَعْتِبُ». رَوَاهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ.
Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "None of you should wish for death. 1 If he is a doer of good, perhaps he may increase in good deeds, and if he is a wrongdoer, perhaps he may repent" [Narrated by Bukhari]
Notes / الحواشي
1 His statement: "None of you should wish for death..." It is said in Radd al-Muhtar: "It is disliked to wish for death due to harm that has befallen one, as it is prohibited. If one must, then let him say: 'O Allah, keep me alive as long as life is better for me, and take my soul when death is better for me.' This is mentioned in As-Siraj."
۱ قوله : لا يتمنى أحدكم الموت إلخ : قال في رد المحتار»: قال في النهر»: ويكره تمني الموت بضرر نزل به؛ لنهي عن ذلك. فإن كان ولا بد فليقل: اللهم أحيني ما كانت الحياة خيرا لي، وتوفني إذا كانت الوفاة خيرا لي. كذا في «السراج».
وَعَنْهُ (رضي الله عنه) قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُوْلُ اللهِ ﷺ: «لَا يَتَمَنَّى أَحَدُكُمُ الْمَوْتَ وَلَا يَدْعُ بِهِ مِنْ قَبْلِ أَنْ يَأْتِيَهُ أَنَّهُ إِذَا مَاتَ انْقَطَعَ عَمَلُهُ، وَإِنَّهُ لَا يَزِيدُ الْمُؤْمِنَ عُمْرُهُ إِلَّا خَيْرًا». رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ.
Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "None of you should wish for death or pray for it before it comes to him. When one dies, his deeds come to an end, and the life of a believer only increases him in good" [Narrated by Muslim]
وَعَنْ جَبَّارٍ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُوْلُ اللهِ ﷺ: «لَا تَمَنَّوا الْمَوْتَ؛ فَإِنَّ هَوْلَ الْمَطْلَعِ شَدِيدٌ، وَإِنَّ مِنَ السَّعَادَةِ أَنْ يَطُولَ عُمْرُ الْعَبْدِ وَيَرْزُقَهُ اللَّهُ عَزَّوَجَلَّ الْإِنَابَةَ». رَوَاهُ أَحْمَدُ.
Jabbar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Do not wish for death, for the horror of the grave is severe. Indeed, part of happiness is for a servant to live long and for Allah to grant him repentance" [Narrated by Ahmad]
وَعَنْ أَبِي أُمَامَةَ (رضي الله عنه) قَالَ : جَلَسْنَا إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَذَكَرْنَا وَرَقَّقَنَا فَبَكَى سَعْدُ بْنُ أَبِي وَقَاصٍ فَأَكْثَرَ الْبُكَاءَ، فَقَالَ: يَا لَيْتَنِي مُتَّ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ: يَا سَعْدُ، أَعِنْدِي تَتَمَنَّى الْمَوْتَ فَرَدَّدَ ذَلِكَ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: «يَا سَعْدُ، إِنْ كُنْتَ خُلِقْتَ لِلْجَنَّةِ فَمَا طَالَ عُمْرُكَ وَحَسُنَ مِنْ عَمَلِكَ فَهُوْ خَيْرٌ لَكَ». رَوَاهُ أَحْمَدُ.
Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: We were sitting with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), and he spoke to us in a way that softened our hearts. Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) wept profusely and said, "I wish I were dead." The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "O Sa'd, do you wish for death while I am here?" He repeated this three times, then said, "O Sa'd, if you were created for Paradise, then your long life and good deeds are better for you" [Narrated by Ahmad]
وَعَنْ حَارَثَةَ بْنِ مُضَرِّبٍ قَالَ: دَخَلْتُ عَلَى خَبَّابٍ، وَقَدْ اكْتَوَى سَبْعًا، فَقَالَ: لَوْلَا إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُوْلَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: «لَا يَتَمَّنَ أَحَدُكُمُ الْمَوْتَ لَتَمَنَّيْتُهُ، وَلَقَدْ رَأَيْتُنِي مَعَ رَسُوْلِ اللهِ ﷺ مَا أَمْلِكُ دِرْهَمًا، وَإِنَّ فِي جَانِبِ بَيْتِي الْآنَ لَأَرْبَعِينَ أَلْفَ دِرْهَمٍ، قَالَ: ثُمَّ أُتِيَ بِكَفَنِهِ، فَلَمَّا رَآهُ بَكَى وَقَالَ: لَكِنَّ حَمْزَةَ لَمْ يُوْجَدْ لَهُ كَفَنُ إِلَّا بُرْدَةٌ مَلْحَاءُ، إِذَا جُعِلَتْ عَلَى رَأْسِهِ قَلَصَتْ عَنْ قَدَمَيْهِ، وَإِذَا جُعِلَتْ عَلَى قَدَمَيْهِ قَلَصَتْ عَنْ رَأْسِهِ، حَتَّى مُدَّتْ عَلَى رَأْسِهِ، وَجُعِلَ عَلَى قَدَمَيْهِ الْإِذْخِرُ. رَوَاهُ أَحْمَدُ وَالتَّرْمِذِيُّ إِلَّا أَنَّهُ لَمْ يَذْكُرْ ثُمَّ أُتِي بِكَفَنِهِ إِلَى آخِرِهِ.
Harithah ibn Mudarrib (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: I visited Khabbab (may Allah be pleased with him) while he was cauterizing himself seven times. He said, "If I had not heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say, 'None of you should wish for death,' I would have wished for it. I remember being with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) when I did not possess even a dirham, and now I have forty thousand dirhams in the corner of my house." Then his shroud was brought to him, and when he saw it, he wept and said, "But Hamzah (may Allah be pleased with him) was not given a shroud except for a striped cloak. If it was placed over his head, it would not reach his feet, and if it was placed over his feet, it would not reach his head. So it was placed over his head, and idhkhir (a type of grass) was placed over his feet" [Narrated by Ahmad and Tirmidhi, except that Tirmidhi did not mention the part about the shroud]
وَعَنْ أَنَسٍ (رضي الله عنه) قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: «لَا يَتَمَنَّيْنَّ أَحَدُكُمُ الْمَوْتَ مِنْ ضُرَّ أَصَابَهُ، فَإِنْ كَانَ لَا بُدَّ فَاعِلًا فَلْيَقُلْ : اللَّهُمَّ أَحْيِنِي مَا كَانَتْ الْحَيَاةُ خَيْرًا لِي، وَتَوَفَّنِي إِذَا كَانَتْ الْوَفَاةُ خَيْرًا لِي. مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ.
Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "None of you should wish for death due to harm that has befallen him. وَعَنْ عُبَادَةَ بْنِ الصَّامِتِ (رضي الله عنه) قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُوْلُ اللَّهِ ﷺ : «مَنْ أَحَبَّ لِقَاءَ اللَّهِ أَحَبَّ اللَّهُ لِقَاءَهُ، وَمَنْ كَرِهَ لِقَاءَ اللهِ كَرِهَ اللهُ لِقَاءَهُ، فَقَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ أَوْ بَعْضُ أَزْوَاجِهِ: إِنَّا لَتَكْرَهُ الْمَوْتَ. قَالَ: «لَيْسَ ذَلِكَ، وَلَكِنَّ الْمُؤْمِنَ إِذَا حَضَرَهُ الْمَوْتُ بُشِّرَ بِرِضْوَانِ اللَّهِ وَكَرَامَتِهِ، فَلَيْسَ شَيْءٌ أَحَبَّ إِلَيْهِ مِمَّا أَمَامَهُ، فَأَحَبَّ لِقَاءَ اللَّهِ وَأَحَبَّ اللَّهُ لِقَاءَهُ، وَإِنَّ الْكَافِرَ إِذَا حُضِرَ بُشِّرَ بِعَذَابِ اللهِ وَعُقُوْبَتِهِ، فَلَيْسَ شَيْءٍ أَكْرَهَ إِلَيْهِ مِمَّا أَمَامَهُ، كَرِهَ لِقَاءَ اللهِ وَكَرِهَ اللهُ لِقَاءَهُ». مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ . وَفِي رِوَايَةٍ عَائِشَة وَالْمَوْتِ قَبْلَ لقاء الله.
Ubadah ibn as-Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Whoever loves to meet Allah, Allah loves to meet him. And whoever dislikes to meet Allah, Allah dislikes to meet him." Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) or one of his wives said, "We dislike death." He said, "It is not that. Rather, when death approaches a believer, he is given the glad tidings of Allah's pleasure and honor, so there is nothing more beloved to him than what lies ahead. Thus, he loves to meet Allah, and Allah loves to meet him. When death approaches a disbeliever, he is given the news of Allah's punishment and retribution, so there is nothing more hated to him than what lies ahead. He dislikes to meet Allah, and Allah dislikes to meet him" [Agreed upon]. In another narration, Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) mentioned death before meeting Allah.
وَعَنْ مُعَاذِ بْنِ جَبَلٍ (رضي الله عنه) قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: «إِنْ شِئْتُمْ أَنْبَأْتُكُمْ مَا أَوَّلُ مَا يَقُوْلُ اللَّهُ لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ وَمَا أَوَّلُ مَا يَقُوْلُوْنَ لَهُ». قُلْنَا: نَعَمْ، يَا رَسُوْلَ اللهِ، قَالَ: «إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَقُوْلُ لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ : هَلْ أَحْبَبْتُمْ لِقَانِي؟ فَيَقُولُونَ: نَعَمْ، يَا رَبَّنَا. فَيَقُولُ: لِمَ؟ فَيَقُوْلُوْنَ: رَجَوْنَا عَفْوَكَ وَمَغْفِرَتَكَ، فَيَقُوْلُ : قَدْ وَجَبَتْ لَكُمْ مَغْفِرَتِي». رَوَاهُ فِي شَرْحِ السُّنَّةِ»، وَأَبُو نُعَيْمٍ فِي الْحِلْيَةِ».
Mu'adh ibn Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Shall I inform you of the first thing Allah will say to the believers on the Day of Resurrection and the first thing they will say to Him?" We said, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "Allah will say to the believers: 'Did you love to meet Me?' They will say, 'Yes, O our Lord.' He will say, 'Why?' They will say, 'We hoped for Your forgiveness and mercy.' He will say, 'I have granted you My forgiveness'" [Narrated in Sharh as-Sunnah and by Abu Nu'aym in Al-Hilyah]
وَعَنْ أَنَسٍ (رضي الله عنه) قَالَ: دَخَلَ النَّبِيُّ اللهِ عَلَى شَابٌ وَهُمْ فِي الْمَوْتِ، فَقَالَ: كَيْفَ تَجِدُكَ؟ قَالَ: أَرْجُو اللهَ يَا رَسُوْلَ اللهِ، وَإِنِّي أَخَافُ ذُنُونِي. فَقَالَ رَسُوْلُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: لَا يَجْتَمِعَانِ فِي قَلْبِ عَبْدٍ فِي مِثْلِ هَذَا الْمَوْطَنِ إِلَّا أَعْطَاهُ اللَّهُ مَا يَرْجُوْ وَآمَنَهُ مِمَّا يَخَافُ». رَوَاهُ التَّرْمِذِيُّ وَابْنُ مَاجَه.
Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Prophet (ﷺ) visited a young man who was on the verge of death and asked, "How do you feel?" The young man said, "I hope in Allah, O Messenger of Allah, but I fear my sins." The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "These two feelings do not coexist in the heart of a servant in such a situation except that Allah will grant him what he hopes for and protect him from what he fears" [Narrated by Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah]
وَعَنْ جَابِرٍ (رضي الله عنه) قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ رَسُوْلَ اللهِ ﷺ قَبْلَ مَوْتِهِ بِثَلَاثَةِ أَيَّامٍ يَقُوْلُ: لَا يَمُوْتَنَّ أَحَدُكُمْ إِلَّا وَهُوَ يُحْسِنُ الظَّنَّ بِاللَّهِ». رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ.
Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say three days before his death, "None of you should die except while having good thoughts about Allah" [Narrated by Muslim]
وَعَنْ أَبِي قَتَادَةَ (رضي الله عنه) أَنَّهُ كَانَ يُحَدِّثُ أَنَّ رَسُوْلَ اللهِ ﷺ مَرَّ عَلَيْهِ بِجَنَازَةٍ، فَقَالَ: مُسْتَرِيحُ أَوْ مُسْتَرَاحُ مِنْهُ؟ فَقَالُوا : يَا رَسُوْلَ اللهِ ، مَا الْمُسْتَرِيحُ وَالْمُسْتَرَاحُ مِنْهُ؟ فَقَالَ: «الْعَبْدُ الْمُؤْمِنُ يَسْتَرِيْحُ مِنْ نَصَبِ الدُّنْيَا وَأَذَاهَا إِلَى رَحْمَةِ اللَّهِ، وَالْعَبْدُ الْفَاجِرُ يَسْتَرِيحُ مِنْهُ الْعِبَادُ، وَالْبِلَادُ وَالشَّجَرُ وَالدَّوَابُّ». مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ.
Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) passed by a funeral and said, "Is he relieved or is he a relief for others?" They said, "O Messenger of Allah, what is 'relieved' and 'a relief for others'?" He said, "The believing servant is relieved from the toil and harm of the world to the mercy of Allah, while the wicked servant is a relief for the people, the land, the trees, and the animals" [Agreed upon]
وَعَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ (رضي الله عنهما) قَالَ: أَخَذَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ بَمَنْكَيْ، فَقَالَ: كُنْ فِي الدُّنْيَا كَأَنَّكَ غَرِيبٌ أَوْ عَابِرُ سَبِيلٍ». وَكَانَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ يَقُوْلُ: إِذَا أَمْسَيْتَ فَلَا تَنْتَظِرُ الصَّبَاحَ، وَإِذَا أَصْبَحْتَ فَلَا تَنْتَظِرُ الْمَسَاءَ، وَخُذْ مِنْ صِحَّتِكَ لِمَرَضِكَ، وَمِنْ حَيَاتِكَ لِمَوْتِكَ. رَوَاهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ.
Abdullah ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) took hold of his shoulders and said, "Be in this world as if you are a stranger or a traveler." Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say, "When evening comes, do not wait for the morning, and when morning comes, do not wait for the evening. Take from your health for your sickness and from your life for your death" [Narrated by Bukhari]
وَعَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ (رضي الله عنه) قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: «أَكْثِرُوا ذِكْرَ هَاذِمِ اللَّذَاتِ الْمَوْتِ». رَوَاهُ التَّرْمِذِيُّ وَالنَّسَائِيُّ وَابْنُ مَاجَه.
Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said"Frequently remember the destroyer of pleasures, death" [Narrated by Tirmidhi, Nasa'i, and Ibn Majah]
وَعَنِ ابْنِ مَسْعُوْدٍ (رضي الله عنه) أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَالَ ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ لِأَصْحَابِهِ: «اسْتَحْيُوا مِنَ اللهِ حَقَّ الْحَيَاءِ». قَالُوا : إِنَّا نَسْتَحْيِي مِنَ اللهِ يَا نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ، وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ. قَالَ: «لَيْسَ ذَلِكَ، وَلَكِنْ مَنْ اسْتَحْيِي مِنَ اللهِ حَقَّ الْحَيَاءِ فَلْيَحْفَظُ الرَّأْسَ وَمَا وَعَى إِلَى حِفْظِ الْبَطْنِ وَمَا حَوَى، وَلْيَذْكُرُ الْمَوْتَ وَالْبِلَى، وَمَنْ أَرَادَ الْآخِرَةَ تَرَكَ زِينَةَ الدُّنْيَا، فَمَنْ فَعَلَ ذَلِكَ فَقَدْ اسْتَحْيِي مِنَ اللَّهِ حَقَّ الْحَيَاءِ». رَوَاهُ أَحْمَدُ وَالتَّرْمِذِيُّ.
Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) said to his companions one day, "Be truly shy of Allah." They said, "We are shy of Allah, O Prophet of Allah, and all praise is due to Allah." He said, "That is not it. Rather, whoever is truly shy of Allah should guard his head and what it contains, guard his stomach and what it carries, and remember death and decay. Whoever desires the Hereafter should abandon the adornments of this world. Whoever does this has truly been shy of Allah" [Narrated by Ahmad and Tirmidhi]
وَعَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَمْرِو (رضي الله عنهما) قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُوْلُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: «تُحْفَةُ الْمُؤْمِنِ الْمَوْتُ. رَوَاهُ الْبَيْهَقِيُّ فِي شُعَبِ الْإِيْمَانِ».
Abdullah ibn Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "The gift of a believer is death" [Narrated by Al-Bayhaqi in Shu'ab al-Iman]
وَعَنْ بُرَيْدَةَ (رضي الله عنه) قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ : «الْمُؤْمِنُ يَمُوْتُ بِعَرَقِ الْجَبِينِ». رَوَاهُ التَّرْمِذِيُّ وَالنَّسَائِيُّ وَابْنُ مَاجَه.
Buraidah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "The believer dies with sweat on his forehead" [Narrated by Tirmidhi, Nasa'i, and Ibn Majah]
وَعَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: «مَوْتُ الْفَجْأَةِ أَخْذَةُ أَسِفٍ». رَوَاهُ أَبُو دَاوُدَ وَزَادَ الْبَيْهَقِيُّ فِي شُعَبِ الْإِيْمَانِ» وَرَزِينُ فِي كِتَابِهِ: «أَخْذَةُ أَسِفٍ لِلْكُفَّارِ وَرَحْمَةٌ لِلْمُؤْمِنْ».
Ubaidullah ibn Khalid (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "Sudden death is a cause of regret" [Narrated by Abu Dawud]. Al-Bayhaqi added in Shu'ab al-Iman and Razin in his book: "A cause of regret for the disbelievers and a mercy for the believers."
