84. Sūrat Al-Inshiqaq · The Sundering

Meccan · 25 verses
بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِبِسۡمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحۡمٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
1
اِذَا السَّمَا࢜ءُ انْشَقَّتْ ۝١ۙإِذَا ٱلسَّمَآءُ ٱنشَقَّتۡ ١

When the sky bursts open,

When the heaven is split asunder

WHEN THE SKY is split asunder,

When the heaven is rent as-under.

When (all) the heavenly bodies will split asunder

2
وَاَذِنَتْ لِرَبِّهَا وَحُقَّتْ ۝٢ۙوَأَذِنَتۡ لِرَبِّهَا وَحُقَّتۡ ٢

obeying its Lord as it must,

And attentive to her Lord in fear,

obeying its Sustainer, as in truth it must;

And listens to the command of its Lord, and it has to do so.

And obey the command of their Lord (with regard to the catastrophic split) and (it is this implementation of the command) that they are bound to do

وَاِذَا الْاَرْضُ مُدَّتْ ۝٣ؕوَإِذَا ٱلۡأَرۡضُ مُدَّتۡ ٣

and when the earth is flattened out,

And when the earth is spread out

and when the earth is leveled,

And when the earth is stretched out.

And when the earth will be flattened out (after it is broken into dust particles)

وَاَلْقَتْ مَا فِيْهَا وَتَخَلَّتْ ۝٤ۙوَأَلۡقَتۡ مَا فِيهَا وَتَخَلَّتۡ ٤

and ejects ˹all˺ its contents and becomes empty,

And hath cast out all that was in her, and is empty

and casts forth whatever is in it, and becomes utterly void,

And casts forth what is in it, and becomes hollow.

And it will cast out all that is inside it and become empty

5
وَاَذِنَتْ لِرَبِّهَا وَحُقَّتْ ۝٥ؕوَأَذِنَتۡ لِرَبِّهَا وَحُقَّتۡ ٥

obeying its Lord as it must, ˹surely you will all be judged˺.

And attentive to her Lord in fear!

obeying its Sustainer, as in truth it must -:

And listens to the command of its Lord, and it has to do so.

And (it) will (also) obey the command of its Lord (with regard to the catastrophic split) and (it is this obedience) which it is worthy of

يٰٓاَيُّهَا الْاِنْسَانُ اِنَّكَ كَادِحٌ اِلٰي رَبِّكَ كَدْحًا فَمُلٰقِيْهِ ۝٦ۚيَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ إِنَّكَ كَادِحٌ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ كَدۡحٗا فَمُلَٰقِيهِ ٦

O humanity! Indeed, you are labouring restlessly towards your Lord, and will ˹eventually˺ meet the consequences.

Thou, verily, O man, art working toward thy Lord a work which thou wilt meet (in His presence).

[then,] O man - thou [that] hast, verily, been toiling towards thy Sustainer in painful toil - then shalt thou meet Him!

'O Man! undoubtedly, you are to run, necessarily towards your Lord, then you are to meet Him.

O man! You sustain rigours to reach your Lord. Ultimately, you will meet Him

فَاَمَّا مَنْ اُوْتِيَ كِتٰبَهٗ بِيَمِيْنِهٖ ۝٧ۙفَأَمَّا مَنۡ أُوتِيَ كِتَٰبَهُۥ بِيَمِينِهِۦ ٧

As for those who are given their record in their right hand,

Then whoso is given his account in his right hand

And as for him whose record shall be placed in his right hand,

Then as to one who is given his record in his right hand.

So as for him who will be given his record in his right hand

8
فَسَوْفَ يُحَاسَبُ حِسَابًا يَّسِيْرًا ۝٨ۙفَسَوۡفَ يُحَاسَبُ حِسَابٗا يَسِيرٗا ٨

they will have an easy reckoning,

He truly will receive an easy reckoning

he will in time be called to account with an easy accounting,

He will soon have an easy reckoning.

He will soon be given an easy reckoning

9
وَّيَنْقَلِبُ اِلٰٓي اَهْلِهٖ مَسْرُوْرًا ۝٩ؕوَيَنقَلِبُ إِلَىٰٓ أَهۡلِهِۦ مَسۡرُورٗا ٩

and will return to their people joyfully.

And will return unto his folk in joy.

and will [be able to] turn joyfully to those of his own kind.

And he will return to his household joyfully.

And will return to his family rejoicing

10
وَاَمَّا مَنْ اُوْتِيَ كِتٰبَهٗ وَرَا࢜ءَ ظَهْرِهٖ ۝١٠ۙوَأَمَّا مَنۡ أُوتِيَ كِتَٰبَهُۥ وَرَآءَ ظَهۡرِهِۦ ١٠

And as for those who are given their record ˹in their left hand˺ from behind their backs,

But whoso is given his account behind his back,

But as for him whose record shall be given to him behind his back;

And as to him who is given his record behind his back.

And as for him who will be given his record behind his back

فَسَوْفَ يَدْعُوْا ثُبُوْرًا ۝١١ۙفَسَوۡفَ يَدۡعُواْ ثُبُورٗا ١١

they will cry for ˹instant˺ destruction,

He surely will invoke destruction

he will in time pray for utter destruction:

He will soon call for death.

He will soon cry out for death

12
وَّيَصْلٰي سَعِيْرًا ۝١٢ؕوَيَصۡلَىٰ سَعِيرًا ١٢

and will burn in the blazing Fire.

And be thrown to scorching fire.

but he will enter the blazing flame.

And he shall enter the blazing fire.

And he will enter the Blazing Fire of Hell

اِنَّهٗ كَانَ فِيْٓ اَهْلِهٖ مَسْرُوْرًا ۝١٣ؕإِنَّهُۥ كَانَ فِيٓ أَهۡلِهِۦ مَسۡرُورًا ١٣

For they used to be prideful among their people,

He verily lived joyous with his folk,

Behold, [in his earthly life] he lived joyfully among people of his own kind

Undoubtedly, he was happy in his household.

Surely, he lived joyfully with his family (in the world)

14
اِنَّهٗ ظَنَّ اَنْ لَّنْ يَّحُوْرَ ۝١٤ۚۛإِنَّهُۥ ظَنَّ أَن لَّن يَحُورَ ١٤

thinking they would never return ˹to Allah˺.

He verily deemed that he would never return (unto Allah).

for, behold, he never thought that he would have to return [to God].

He imagined that he is not to return.

No doubt, he thought he would never return (to his Lord) for reckoning

15
بَلٰٓيۚۛ اِنَّ رَبَّهٗ كَانَ بِهٖ بَصِيْرًا ۝١٥ؕبَلَىٰٓۚ إِنَّ رَبَّهُۥ كَانَ بِهِۦ بَصِيرٗا ١٥

Yes ˹they would˺! Surely their Lord has always been All-Seeing of them.

Nay, but lo! his Lord is ever looking on him!

Yea indeed! His Sustainer did see all that was in him!

Yes, why not! undoubtedly, his Lord is seeing him.

Why not! Indeed, his Lord is ever watching him

16
فَلَا͏ٓ اُقْسِمُ بِالشَّفَقِ ۝١٦ۙفَلَآ أُقۡسِمُ بِٱلشَّفَقِ ١٦

So, I do swear by the twilight!

Oh, I swear by the afterglow of sunset,

BUT NAY! I call to witness the sunset's [fleeting] afterglow,

I swear by the twilight of the evening.

So I swear by the evening glow (i.e., the twilight or its later glare)

17
وَالَّيْلِ وَمَا وَسَقَ ۝١٧ۙوَٱلَّيۡلِ وَمَا وَسَقَ ١٧

And by the night and whatever it envelops!

And by the night and all that it enshroudeth,

and the night, and what it [step by step] unfolds,

And by the night and all that is brought together in it.

And by the night and all that it envelops (under its embrace)

18
وَالْقَمَرِ اِذَا اتَّسَقَ ۝١٨ۙوَٱلۡقَمَرِ إِذَا ٱتَّسَقَ ١٨

And by the moon when it waxes full!

And by the moon when she is at the full,

and the moon, as it grows to its fullness:

And by the moon when it becomes full.

And the moon when it appears full

19
لَتَرْكَبُنَّ طَبَقًا عَنْ طَبَقٍ ۝١٩ؕلَتَرۡكَبُنَّ طَبَقًا عَن طَبَقٖ ١٩

You will certainly pass from one state to another.

That ye shall journey on from plane to plane.

[even thus, O men,] are you bound to move; onward from stage to stage.

You shall surely tide stage after stage.

You will assuredly ride along stage by stage

20
فَمَا لَهُمْ لَا يُو͏ٔ͏ْمِنُوْنَ ۝٢٠ۙفَمَا لَهُمۡ لَا يُؤۡمِنُونَ ٢٠

So what is the matter with them that they do not believe,

What aileth them, then, that they believe not

What, then, is amiss with them that they will not believe [in a life to come]?

So what happened to them that they believe not.

So, what is the matter with them that (even after witnessing the truth of the forecast of the Qur’an), they do not believe

وَاِذَا قُرِي͏ٔ͏َ عَلَيْهِمُ الْقُرْاٰنُ لَا يَسْجُدُوْنَ ۝٢١ࣛؕوَإِذَا قُرِئَ عَلَيۡهِمُ ٱلۡقُرۡءَانُ لَا يَسۡجُدُونَۤ۩ ٢١

and when the Quran is recited to them, they do not bow down ˹in submission˺?

And, when the Qur'an is recited unto them, worship not (Allah)?

and [that], when the Qur’an is read unto them, they do not fall down in prostration?

And when Quran is recited to them, they do not prostrate. [^] (SAJDA

And when the Qur’an is recited to them, they do not fall down prostrate (before Allah)

بَلِ الَّذِيْنَ كَفَرُوْا يُكَذِّبُوْنَ ۝٢٢ؗۖبَلِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ يُكَذِّبُونَ ٢٢

In fact, the disbelievers persist in denial.

Nay, but those who disbelieve will deny;

Nay, but they who are bent on denying the truth give the lie [to this divine writ]!

But rather the infidels are belying.

Instead, the disbelievers (further) deny it

23
وَاللّٰهُ اَعْلَمُ بِمَا يُوْعُوْنَ ۝٢٣ؗۖوَٱللَّهُ أَعۡلَمُ بِمَا يُوعُونَ ٢٣

But Allah knows best whatever they hide.

And Allah knoweth best what they are hiding.

Yet God has full knowledge of what they conceal [in their hearts].

And Allah knows well what they keep in their hearts.

And Allah knows best (the contention and disbelief) which they are piling

24
فَبَشِّرْهُمْ بِعَذَابٍ اَلِيْمٍ ۝٢٤ۙفَبَشِّرۡهُم بِعَذَابٍ أَلِيمٍ ٢٤

So give them good news of a painful punishment.

So give them tidings of a painful doom,

Hence, give them the tiding of grievous suffering [in the life to come] –

So, give them tidings of a painful torment.

So give them the news of a painful punishment

25
اِلَّا الَّذِيْنَ اٰمَنُوْا وَعَمِلُوا الصّٰلِحٰتِ لَهُمْ اَجْرٌ غَيْرُ مَمْنُوْنٍ ۝٢٥ࣖإِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَعَمِلُواْ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ لَهُمۡ أَجۡرٌ غَيۡرُ مَمۡنُونِۭ ٢٥

But those who believe and do good will have a never-ending reward.

Save those who believe and do good works, for theirs is a reward unfailing.

unless it be such [of them] as [repent, and] attain to faith, and do good works: for theirs shall be a reward unending!.

But as to those who believed and did good deeds, for them is a reward unending

But those who believe and do pious deeds, for them is an unending (i.e., everlasting) reward
